"I'm afraid that you have long been desiring my absence..." - Elizabeth believes he is leaving her forever, mindful of the scandal. Little does she know, he is determined instead do everything in his power to rescue the situation - and her honour.
What I love about this adaptation is how even as Elizabeth slowly begins to come around and change her opinion of Darcy, part of her stubbornly refuses to acknowledge that she actually does LIKE him on some level. Even at the end of this scene as she says out loud to herself that she'll never see him again because of the mess her family is in, it still seems like she hasn't completely acknowledged why that saddens her. It really speaks to the slow burn and growth the two leads go through.
If Darcy would not manage to clean this mess (and Lizzy could not even think that he will get involved and of course couldn't expect that) they indeed would not see each other again. He even cancelled the meeting of Lizzy with his sister to not put his sister under risk. He might have loved Lizzy, but his responsibilities for his existing family and Darcy house come before her and as a person of that time she understands and accepts that.
Even in the tragic moment the two protagonists communicate in an adult and congenial way and the viewer can imagine them as good partners. I like the 1995 version.

@NearlyFullyFree But were the costumes in 2005 historically accurate? Historical accuracy and being faithful to the actual dialogue in the novel is why the 1995 series is so admired by Austin afficiandos. I have watched the 2005 movie and found it to be visually beautiful but in every other regard, I prefer the 1995 BBC series and especially the actors portraying Elizabeth and Darcy.
@@Turtledove2009 I think many people would agree with you and I am not disagreeing. I have read many saying similar things and that they also preferred the accuracy of the 1995 series. I just found the costumes in that series just did nothing to improve Elizabeth’s looks and frankly thought the women’s costumes always look ridiculous of that time. Also thought Darcy, when wearing his large hat, really wasn’t a good look. That is partly why I preferred the 2005 film version with Keira, but I also thought she was very attractive in it.
