Hey Ben! Cheers from Chicago. Just wanted to let you know how inspirational your videos are for me. I’m a 35-year-old father with one on the way as well, and have been trying to get back into skating after taking a 15 year plus break from it. I feel so terrible for giving it up for so long because I’m finally starting to feel the effects of aging especially when trying to skate. You give us all hope! Keep killing it out there and hope to see more videos of how you incorporate skating into your life with the hefty job of being papa dog of a large litter, whilst Still managing to make such cool content and work a grunt job. God bless.
Our favorite pro skaters put out some of the sickest videos parts in history on set ups like this. It just takes time to get used to it. Remember, people skated embarcadero on wheels this size. If you've ever skated there you know what I'm talking about
one time at the park i saw a guy with wheels so small that they were way wider than they were tall, and they made a machine gun sound when riding around. i looked up dingleberries and were like "these are smaller" i thought they were tiny then, and at the time i thought 54s were big!
I don't know why but I love how varial Kickflips look on these old decks. I think that they look cool in general but the shape of the board and the low pop makes them look so much cooler I really love that.
I still have my Santa Cruz Slick from ‘92 in my garage. Wheels are just as small. Had to rotate my wheels because they’d wear down too fast. Had zero money to buy new wheels. It’s got razor tail like a Mafk! I still love the shape though. Same shape as the new Mike McGill Flight decks. Great video.
I always wondered why people in skate vids from the early 90s didn't pop their tricks very high into the air, Ben explaining that with tiny wheels you can't get very much pop makes a lot of sense.
Hi Ben! And thank you so much for this 1990's board review! You were lucky to find a board this age in such a good condition and you added great value while skating it. Back to the future! I get it was not that funny yet you did it well. I suppose you will lose 50% your great skills (and motivation) if you keep riding this beast one week long... Your commitment is very much appreciated. You know what? This no pop board would certainly fit one of the current trends : flappy tricks!!! Thank you again Ben👍 Enjoy!
I've had a cold all week so haven't been skating; just wanted to get through the work week. Watching this makes me want to get out and skate asap. I also want to maybe try some new indies out again; I've been on Thunders for the last good while, but I want to change my setup for some reason. I think I have my old indie stage 11 159 hollows lying around, maybe I'll throw them on to see if I like them. Winter is almost here to ruin the skate days too; sucks that I haven't skated all week, hopefully I can get back at it next week.
Not really the same but similar. It A. is longer B. has a functional wheelbase C. and most importantly has concave and kicks. I have an old New Deal football as old as this SC and I would bet money it would skate like shit compared to that Primitive.
Yeah man as much as I loved those boards I hated them just as much. I broke a deck every few sessions sometimes just messing around. Flat concaves combined with narrower/skinny decks made for fragile boards. When they were 8.75-9.25 they were harder to fling around but they were tougher. By the middle of 93 they were tooth picks and they snapped like one.
What if you had that deck in a modern setup? I want to get and ride my Ed Templton Television TV board again that was stolen in high school. The green one with the television sunglasses, lol. Thanks for the vid💚
you just reminded me i have a super similar set up that i put together just for fun and havent skated it since because the kingpin is super long and makes me anxious.
I used to grind my wheels down on a circle sander in early 90s .. Tony Alva took a video of me and my board at a skateboard show in honesdale pa, it was grate to meet him and he liked my wheels said he never seen that before
i have a Powell Peralta Lance Mountain board from 1987 (34 years old). It is soo heavy compared to today's skateboards. I converted it to a surf skate with a Waterbourne Surf Adapter.
I found two 8 inch wide by 31 inch long skateboards with 16 1/4 inch wheelbase and 52 mm wheels today, by (not in) a dumpster. I think they were blanks because they have cellophane between the trucks and the board. Speaking of the trucks, the trucks are exactly like the one in your video. The “sandpaper“ grip tape is coming loose on one of them, and the wheels don’t spin well on the other one. One of them had cobwebs on it. I don’t think they were used a whole lot. After watching your video, I can see why.
@@MrPDTaylor I don't know what my first deck was, but it wasn't any known brand that's for sure.
