    I just put together a similar deck. 9.0” anti hero Russo deck with Indy Stage 11 Hollow 149s, those same OJ Elites, and Bones rails. I’m 51 and getting back into skating after 35 years off. Built a pair of mini ramps and a curb/ledge in my backyard as a DIY skate park, using your videos as inspiration. Thanks for all you do.

    Dunno about the wheels. There's a reason curb skaters have embraced sub-50mm wheels like those Boardycakes makes: it's not just 'big pants, small wheels' nostalgia, the small size actually makes popping the wheel up onto the curb easier when doing noseslide to crooks and the like. I learned those last year on a set of Spitfires I'd rode down to 39 mm but struggled again when I got a new setup. What also helps is if the wheel has a more rounded transition from side to bottom on the outside - I'd got the very angular Spitfire 'OG cut' shape and could feel the wheel snag every time I wanted to do a noseslide crook, so I ended up ditching those for a smaller, 'classic' shape instead.

    • @KopaszJack
      @KopaszJack Рік тому

      each his own, but if you got the technic right then in the end doesn'T matter. smaller wheels do slide better of course

    • @gabriellaforce2041

      I think exactly the same thing about wheels! Little and round is the best.

    • @skwibblez9239
      @skwibblez9239 Рік тому

      IMO preferred wheel size and shape really depends on what slappies you do and how big the curbs you skate are. Little ass wheels are good for crooks and nose slides, sure, but try getting into slappy 50s and smiths on a tall curb and you'll find they're a lot harder. As a counter point, look at skaters like Jason Adams, Ryan Townley, Bevup, Ace Pelka, etc who all skate curbs using 56-58mm conical shaped wheels.

    I've found that wheels of that size inhibit getting into the slappy grind (a smaller wheel rolls up the curb into the slappy more easily). My dude! Premium slappage! Your rail placement looks spot on for mix up grind and slides. Play with it more while being stationary. From boardslide, fully lean on your heels or toes. Go full Michael Jackson or cartoon character skid stop until you touch the wood. You should be able to balance on it like that (or even do boardslides like that if you’re feeling silly). From there, do the awkward old lady mall walk shuffle until one of your trucks make contact. It should go right to the grind with no effort or wheel bonk.

    Tensor Mag lights (-90 grams, slides even unvaxed curbs) + board rails (+90 grams) + Powell dragon wheels (93A that slides) + whatever board you prefer = street destroyer that weights as regular skateboard. Add some thin riser pads to better absorb rough streets if needed.

Initially I opted for a 57mm wheel for a good lock in but I’ve gone down to 52-53 conicals and still lock in well. 8.75” board, 32.25 length, 14.5 wb, 9” slappy trucks, some cheapo nasty rails and that’s about it. Definitely prefer the wider truck with a slightly narrower board, the smaller wheels make getting up on the kerb easy, the pinch on slappys is as good as a thunder imo. Lower, wider rig for kerbs seem to work well for me but your mileage may vary.
