What are the psychological reasons why a nation starts to feel ashamed of their own language, and history. Professor please speak on this subject. Dear Mr Hoodbhoy, I have been watching your videos for a while and am impressed with your simple, lucid narration of historical facts and realities. Sadly, you are one of the very few people who speak logically and passionately about nationalist affairs. Thoroughly impressed.

If you don't accept the fact of our history, roots, ancestry, rather than, if one is distorting history, then the distorted history will destroy the entire nation.
Discrimination is the manifestation of hatred for a particular section of society or philosophy. Hatred is further legitimised in the scripture with such derogatory terms such as "Kafir" The question is : Why even such a word as Kafir should exist in a holy scripture, is God discriminatory ? This philosophy of hatred has trickled down to the pyche of its followers and has dehumanised the non believers. Why not leave the non believers alone.

The ironic thing is that in the uk, we call everyone from India and Pakistan as ‘apnas’ and more recently as ‘desis’. That is the reality. Pakistan is truly an imagination.
The consequence of discrimination will always be counter discrimination, hatred begets hatred. So, people should contemplate the possibility of expunging this word Kafir and make it a criminal offence to use that word. Calling someone "Kafir" is "Non- Islamophobia" - fear of anything that's non Islamic. Without a solution to this issue, no Islamic society will have peace or will they have the moral high ground to accuse others of phobia or discrimination.
You sir have no knowledge about the word kafir. The word kafir does not mean non believers in Islam, it means the one who rejects god. We can say atheists. Why would you take offense for a word?. If you say this is a offensive word, then there is a word for believers called as 'ghafir'. It's just a terminology. These nomenclatures are there in every abrahamic religions. Even i. Dharmic religion isn't there a word called 'lesser born'?
@@immammuddin5019 It's not the word & it's exact meaning. Let's not hide behind technicalities. The word Kafir has been used with a negative & deragotary connotation right from the time of Prophet. Nobody can deny this.

Naz, I would love to see what Dr. Hoodbhoy has to say about accepting differences. But as a Pakistani, I feel to progress; we need to embrace our differences. I read this somewhere, and I think that's true for Pakistan چمن میں اختلاط رنگ و بو سے بات بنتی ہے ہم ہی ہم ہیں تو کیا ہم ہیں تم ہی تم ہو تو کیا تم ہو All these different ethnicities, cultures, and religions make Pakistan not the other way around!
Indian civilization originated in Indus river valley of Mahenzadaro and Harappa in modern day Pakistan. At various points in the history of our subcontinent modern day Pakistan has been Buddist, Hindu and eventually Islamic. The subcontinent had been invaded by greeks under Alexander, turkic tribes (fleeing Genghis Khan's mangolain army), Mongolians under Taimur Lang, by Afgans and other central asian tribes. Islam came into modern day Pakistan (india's western provinces) with the invasion by the central asian tribes of turkic mongol origin, and Persians. The turkic mongol origin invasions, and afgan tribes bought Islam to the subcontinent. So the modern day Pakistani's do not belong to any particular ethnic group, but rather they're the descendents of all the invading forces and ancient natives who are the descendents of the Indus valley civilization. This geo ethnic map extends all the way from Pakistan to the north western fertile plains of the great Indo Gangetic region of North India. So Pakistani's looking for their identity is natural amd it's a lost cause. They are NOT definitely Arabic, and Turkic. Their identity is with the Hindu civilization of North India, from which their ancestors have converted to Islam. Modern Pakistan is created for Muslims of the subcontinent by the IUML (Indian Union Muslim League). It's president Jinnah himself was born into a Hindu Family by name Poonja. Pakistani's should not be under the delusion that they are descendents of Arabs and Turks (Turkey people), its foolish to think of such comparison.

One of the often repeated mistaken assumption in world history is, thinking that religion is binding factor for humans. It’s not. In Sri Lanka when Sinhalese language was made national language, Tamil speaking population fought against it. A Tamil MP asked a question National Assembly -“Do you want two language, one nation or one language two nation”. It was for very this reason in India, we don’t have one single language as national language. We have 22 scheduled languages, because founding fathers of India knew how much emotional people are about their mother tongue. As Hindu Kannadiga from South India, I can connect better with a Kannada speaking Christian/Muslim than with a Hindi speaking Hindu. Religion is overrated!! Mind you, don't think that Indians are divided linguistically. Nothing from the farther from truth.
very much impressed with prof. Dr. Pervez Hoodbhoy but worried about extremism in my country which keeps on increasing day by day and ruining our country...
This was an enlightening video clip. Whatever Prof. Pervez Hoodbhoy said also has a lot of lessons in India. That we in India should never make religion the basis of nationalism. Religious nationalism is a poisonous mix which can undo the nation. Modern and democratic nation states are home to several religious groups. The way forward for humanity is to build nation states based on rule of law and civil liberties protected by an independent and secular jurisprudence and not based on any religious laws. My deep appreciation for Prof. Pervez Hoodbhoy and also the anchor who asked very relevant questions.
Dr. Hoodboy is indeed Pakistan's best thinker, philosophers and Scientist. How I wish Pakistan Government listens to his advise so that the general population in Pakistan can start their journey towards a prosperous country...
Very thoughtful and a kind of intellectual talk. Both gentlemen have very good grip on the issue. Everyone residing east of the Sindhu irrespective of their faith are "Hindus". Hinduism is an idea of Duty not religion.
It is a sign of the times we live in that this discussion took place between these two gentlemen. Three decades back, it may have been deemed blasphemous. Six decades ago, they could have been arrested for offence to state and faith. In his book 'Among the believers', Sir V S Naipaul states that Islam demands that the convert forego all ties with his past. Having seen the light, the past of darkness must be abandoned. From that perspective, Pakistan has done no wrong. Yet, it is one's past and pride thereof that prepares one for the future. Pakistan has disowned it's past, is uneasy about it's present and unsure of it's future. That's not a very happy place to be in.

As a Bengali, I can hardly distinguish between a North Indian Hindu and a North Indian Muslim. I guess the same goes for a North Indian or a Pakistani when he meets a Bengali Muslim and a Bengali Hindu. In the Indian subcontinent genetic heritage is strongly determined by geographic location rather than religion. Towards the North, the heritage is characterized by Ancestral North Indian, and towards the South it is Ancestral South Indian. And in borderline places like Bengal etc, it is more of a mixture. Broadly speaking.

(if there is any) Or person? I'm sorry if this sounds harsh. I'm a Muslim too. NASA has named a telescope after a noble prize winner Subrahmanyan Chandrasekhar who was born in Lahore, a Lahori born in Pakistan. Not all Pakistanis think the same and most are sensible people.
Pakistan was born based on confusion. The irony truly is that the whole notion of a country for Muslims of South Asia got defeated due to creation of Pakistan. What would have been 40-50% of population got divided in 3 countries. Muslims would have been better off with undivided secular India. Post its creation, Pakistan has only been a jagir of their Punjabi Muslim army. It's funny they even borrowed a language born in UP India, Urdu, as national language. And enforced it on everyone. Bangladesh happened because language is a stronger bond than religion. It's an irony that even the political elite of Punjabi Muslims of Pakistan don't speak, teach, write or publish Punjabi, their own language as much as Urdu. Pakistanis are confused on their identity as well. They took birth as 'non-India' and for decades have been trying to claim an identity of Irani, Pathani, Saudi, Turki. These days Han Chinese.

What are the psychological reasons why a nation starts to feel ashamed of their own language, and history. Professor please speak on this subject. Discrimination is the manifestation of hatred for a particular section of society or philosophy.
Hatred is further legitimised in the scripture with such derogatory terms such as "Kafir"
The question is : Why even such a word as Kafir should exist in a holy scripture, is God discriminatory ?
This philosophy of hatred has trickled down to the pyche of its followers and has dehumanised the non believers.
Why not leave the non believers alone.

@@kanthavelkv From the time of prophet? Please give me a valid reference of that. Yes in the Indian discourse it is used negatively by some zealous clerics and hardliners. But to say it has been that way all along is an exaggeration.
@@immammuddin5019 Just look at how the Jews were referred to in those times & how they were treated, the information of which is in the scripture itself. You would get the answer.

@@kanthavelkvYou were talking about the derogatory use of the term kafir please give a reference for that. As for Jews it's a whole different context. چمن میں اختلاط رنگ و بو سے بات بنتی ہے

All these different ethnicities, cultures, and religions make Pakistan not the other way around!

Two languages ie Sanskrit and Proto Dravidian should be made the national languages of India.

Very much impressed with the interviewer.

Very thoughtful and a kind of intellectual talk. Both gentlemen have very good grip on the issue. Everyone residing east of the Sindhu irrespective of their faith are "Hindus". Hinduism is an idea of Duty not religion.
Totally correct. I believe that too. A proud hindu from Pakistan

@@shariqsalman92 There are many Muslims in India , Bangladesh, Srilanka and even around the globe perhaps who have loved Ertugal series and series like Suleiman the Magnificent, however, loving or liking or idolising something is different than falsely believing and claiming someone else's heritage.

Indian is not a race... Its just different language speaking people in this region
Pakistani are Punjabi converts unlike us .
