Your taste and opinions are never elitist or pretentious, you love what is real, classical and timeless. It is so refreshing. Thank you once again.
I grew up in LA and Orange County in California and everything you’ve listed here is what chicanos usually listen to depending on the event just the way you said. Jazz and oldies is usually listened to when relaxing and unwinding with friends or a woman, blues and rock in casual settings and funk/pop/disco when cruising in low riders or at a different type of social setting. As always great video!
My favorite jazz of all time are the recordings Coltrane did with Johnny Hartman, his collab with Duke Ellington, Ella Fitzgerald's work with Louis Armstrong, Tony Bennett's albums with Bill Evans, and Miles Davis's Sketches of Spain. Classical music is also an ideal addition to any gentleman's playlist. Bach is my favorite composer.
Another spot-on video. I'm much older (early 50s) so I am also a subscriber of Real Men Real Style. My son is 23, and is a rising star in the professional world, so I shared your channel with him today. Thank you for what you are doing. Teaching young men how to be gentleman is more important now, perhaps, than ever. And as a former professor of creative writing and literature, I am grateful that you are doing a video on novels. As I always told my son, a gentleman is well-spoken, well-traveled, well-read, well-dressed, and well-mannered. Bravo.

Thank you for making me feel less like an alien for loving Jazz as a younger person! All my life I’ve heard it’s weird but truly, there is no music classier!
I was in the same boat back in late 90s and 2000s. It gets better but you’ll always be in a niche crowd. The up side is you make friends with people you might not otherwise and occasionally even open doors to new opportunities just because of Jazz.
This is a great video for us young men who find it a bore to listen to the current modern music industry, and is all about becoming that classic gentleman in all aspects of life, even so, with music. Thank you!
I love that you immediately reach for Station To Station. That album is honestly one of his most timeless works. Bowie's albums tend to be reflective of the eras they were born in, and STS is no exception, but that era of popular music has a real staying power or influence that the other decades in the 20th century just can't lay claim to... Except the '90s. Also I am offended that Al Yankovic is not included. I cannot imagine anyone pursuing a true gentleman's musical palate without 'The Biggest Ball of Twine In Minnesota'.
As a music man. Your knowledge, variety, and descriptions of each album and genre are well appreciated and done well. Thank you for showing up to my feed! Subscribing to continue to watch these wonderful guides
Music is the only language that every human can understand. Therefor, it is the highest form of art. Perfectly abstract yet directly touching the soul.
Well done!! This is all spot on. As a jazz musician, I find the most common myth about jazz is that you have to “know something about it” to like it. This is not true and it often scares people away who would otherwise appreciate it.
Music has the amazing ability to change one's state of mind. I'm trying to make a habit of listening to something wonderful every day. And I'll throw in for the list; John Paul Keith and D/troit
Please listen to Aja by Steely Dan, it's a blend of masterful, cynical dylanesque lyrics, sophisticated 70s production and it is an absolute masterclass in musicianship. Also I feel like you are missing a whole section in your video, the lyrics. I believe you are already introduced to Bob Dylan. Nashville Skyline and John Wesley Harding are my favorites, he gives me a feeling of "freewheeling" like no other artist can give. I have been following your channel for a while now and I can say that I really enjoy the no bullshit, yet calm and normal attitude. Cheers
This was a very good video and I love the music variety you showed us! I definitely see myself coming back to listen to these albums because I love the variety.
Great video James. I definitely recommend that you get into listening to classical music, as it is definitely the music of a gentleman. A good starting point is baroque pieces from Bach, Handel and Vivaldi and classical pieces from Mozart, Haydn and Beethoven as these really create a mood of elegance and sophistication, and Mozart's piano works in particular are really easy listening for people less familiar with classical music.
I have versatile music tastes, but have never heard a single piece recommended here. Music preferences are so individual that there could be no universal recommendations.
Classic sixties and early 70s soul is another great option. There are good upbeat or lay back options and it is very interesting to play relative unknowns such as O V Wright and James Carr.
As a portuguese I have to agree, bossa nova is simply the best. Brazil also has Tim Maia which is one of the best performers in soul/jazz music and not many people know of. I got to give it to the brazilians, no one does chill music like them. Also one recommendation, the portuguese version of Jobim "Garota de Ipanema" is way better than the english version with Sinatra "Girl from Ipanema".
3:21 50s, 60s, and 70s was as beautiful period of time for Rio as the music mentioned in the video, in my opinion the pinnacle of Carioca’s culture. We were better in the past!!
You mention Sinatra and Jobim on their respective genres. Have you heard their collaborative "Sinatra/Jobim" album from 1967? Subtle yet complimentary. "Ipanema," "Quiet Nights," and "Concentrate On You" are just exquisite without being too melancholic. A killer record overall that holds up incredibly well.
Jazz is one of my favorite style of music but then again I like a wide variety of music country rock anything classy you can find classy in any genre if you look hard enough

I like Huey Lewis and the News. Their early work was a little too new wave for my taste. But when Sports came out in '83, I think they really came into their own, commercially and artistically. The whole album has a clear, crisp sound, and a new sheen of consummate professionalism that really gives the songs a big boost. He's been compared to Elvis Costello, but I think Huey has a far more bitter, cynical sense of humor.
In '87, Huey released this; Fore!, their most accomplished album. I think their undisputed masterpiece is "Hip To Be Square". A song so catchy, most people probably don't listen to the lyrics. But they should, because it's not just about the pleasures of conformity and the importance of trends. It's also a personal statement about the band itself.

Blues, jazz and classic rock all the way! The first vinyl record I ever bought was Chet Baker and Bill Evans' Alone Together, that one will always hold a special place in my heart. Probably my all-time favourite albums are Chet Baker Sings and Miles Davis' Kind of Blue, though. Love a bit of Sinatra and Dean Martin, it was listening to them and Elvis as a kid that inspired me to get into singing myself, but I wouldn't really classify them as "jazz" per se. When it comes to blues I love a lot of artists, but I have an especial fondness for BB King, Muddy Waters and Janis Joplin. As for rock I'll take pretty much anything, from Elvis, to Dylan, to Hendrix, to AC/DC, to Oasis... I have an especial fondness for bluesy rock though, a la Stones, Creedence, ZZ Top, etc.
June Christy is another amazing, under-appreciated vocalist. Something Cool and her totally original holiday record This Time of Year are some of her career highlights. On that note, it would be great to see a video of your favorite classy holiday records later this year.
You touched on so many of my jazz favorites, it’s as if I had made this video myself. Except Ike Quebec, who I was shockingly unfamiliar with. But it’s a fantastic album and I thank you introducing me to it. I always listen to classical in the morning to ease into my day then jazz in the evening. But bossa in the morning is not a bad idea either. The Sinatra -Jobim album is great too, especially for beach vacations while watching the sunset from the balcony. Matt Monroe was a fantastic yet under-appreciated vocalist who the Sinatra fans may also enjoy. His arrangements and orchestrations sound amazing and rival Nat King Cole’s lush backing sound. The Sammy Davis/Laurendo Almeida collaboration is another beautiful bossa flavored mood album, sadly out of print at present. Whatever someone’s budget or knowledge of sound systems, I would recommend a system with two separate speakers, rather than an all in one or sound bar. This will enable the listener to hear more depth and sound stage in the music, even with a very inexpensive set of powered speakers, or budget amplifier with two speakers. But be forewarned, this could be a gateway drug to becoming a stereo nut like me. This is another great video from this channel, please keep them coming. I love how you talked about music as creating or enhancing a mood which is exactly why I love it so much.
Another enjoyable video. I’d like to add to the list of jazz artists: Ella Fitzgerald, Sergio Mendes and Brasil 66, and Joni Mitchell. There are also some wonderful jazz tracks by non-Jazz artists. “North Dakota” as performed by Lyle Lovett and Rickie Lee Jones is my favorite example. Please do continue to explore music in your videos!
I was disappointed to find out that classical and baroque music was not included. I find the sophistication elegance and beauty of the classical artists to be timeless, ingenious and alleviating to the listener.
Swing and easy listening are also pretty vintage alongside Jazz. Any favorite artists? Excellent content as always. I also enjoy Classical and Metal but it varies depending on my mood.
Great suggestions, and Sade can do no wrong in music. May I suggest Basia with her bossa nova groove music, yes, she had a more pop sound but a very nice and powerful voice.
Joan Chamorro band with Andrea Motis *Classic-Jazz* - fun, creative, melodious, and vivacious 1920's "Gatsby" style music *Current performers:* Max Raabe Palast Orchester /Alex Mendham Orchestra /Andy Schumm Orchestra -- *Originals:* THE great Bix Beiderbecke (Smiles, Davenport Blues, I'm Coming Virginia, In the Dark, Baltimore) Also, Irving Berlin / Hoagy Carmichael / and later, smooth & classy Al Bowlly, Nat King Cole, *Rock/Pop:* Neil Diamond ! / Chris Rea / Bryan Adams 🍁Heaven... / Roy Orbison, *Classical:* Wolfgang Mozart of course! /Joseph Haydn. *Baroque:* Vivaldi / J.S. Bach *Romantic:* Schubert / Schumann / Beethoven / Dvorak / Mendelssohn / Richard Wagner / Shostakovich
I really like to listen to Gran Turismo inspired mixes. I think the Gran Turismo genre combines the best of instrumentals with percussion and bass. It really helps me focus and can make driving a lot of fun. I’ve found at a lower volume it can work really well with company in the car.
thanks a lot for sharing such a delightful taste in music which I can relate to. I would simply add that the like of Joe Pass, Wes Montgomery or Dave Brubeck to name just of few fit well the Jazz Genre. Bands like Yellowjackets or Fourplay and guitarist Martin Taylor for a twist of modernity are superb adds on.
Great video! Thanks for the music suggestions. In my opinion Dean Martin also has some really great gentleman vibe songs, for example: Volare, Gentle on My Mind, Sway, Buona Sera, Just in Time, On an evening in Roma. Oh and "Me Olvide De Vivir" by Julio Iglesias is an amazing vibe.
As a 17 year old, i have found myself starting to dress with polos and chino pants and becoming more interested in this way of living. I like lots of genres like country, 60s-80s rock, 40s swing and jazz and most of al 50s doo wop, soul and rock n roll. What do you think of the more rock n roll and doo wop side of the 50s compared to the jazz?
50s doo wop is amazing. God Only Knows by the Capris is my personal favorite. Some of the edgier rockabilly stuff from that decade is also outstanding, such as Red Cadillac and a Black Mustache by Warren Smith, Endless Sleep by Jody Reynolds, and Dreamy Doll by Bob Lumen.
Great choices!... Might I add some recommendations though... as for Jazz, 'Time Out' by the Dave Brubeck Quartet and "The Witch Doctor' by Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers... Also, during the holidays, I love listening to the 'Charlie Brown Christmas' soundtrack by the Vince Guaraldi Trio.... For the Rock category, I love the sound of The Everly Brothers and easy laid back nature of The Beatles 'Rubber Soul'. Oh and THANK YOU for mentioning the masterpiece by Roxy Music 'Avalon' (THAT is a favorite of my wife... Always puts us both in a romantic mood)
I think you would really enjoy Chet Baker and the Ray Brown Trio, in the jazz genre. p.s. I have all the albums you mentioned so you definitely have good taste ;)
Thanks for the recommendations. Listened to all 3 records, and they were great. But that Sinatra album. Wow! I have listened to a lot of his music but missed this. It was very aptly named. Sat and prepared dinner, and it felt like 3 am with a cigarette and a cocktail, reminiscing about the past.
I'm a Metalhead. But I like The Righteous Brothers, Gary Puckett, the Platters, and Boy George. I also like full classical orchestras, quartets, and cello solo playing.
Born Under A Bad Sign (2005) by Richard Hawley from a good "English" movie called See How They Run (2022)... give the song a listen and the movie is really enjoyable as well. Thanks for ANOTHER Great Video 😀
If a gentleman has a lady over for dinner, one whom he likes quite a bit, at some point in the evening will likely put on Leroy Hutson's eponymously titled album "Hutson."
I enjoyed this video thoroughly. However, I just wanted to add George Michael to the list. While “Careless Whisper” is a classic, there are so many more songs like “Waiting For That Day”, “Spinning The Wheel”, and “Cowboys And Angels”. George was a very classy artist.
Classical music is also essential - an educated man in the origins of music is invaluable. And classical is the best genre in general!
Definitely.
Nat King Cole, the Platters, Chet Baker, Dean Martin, Sinatra are some polished & sophisticated musicians that epitomize the gentlemanly genre

But be forewarned, this could be a gateway drug to becoming a stereo nut like me.
This is another great video from this channel, please keep them coming. I love how you talked about music as creating or enhancing a mood which is exactly why I love it so much.
Just listening to your excellent playlist while sipping a gin tonic and ironing a few dress shirts.. thanks for this very relaxing moment…!
You’re welcome! I love to know that is how people are watching these videos
For equipment, consider something like the KEF LS50 wireless. Beautiful sound without the clutter of separates and the design is unique
Superb selection!🎷👌I would add Gato Barbieri, particularly the piece Europa but really the entire Caliente! album. And anything by John Coltrane.
This is by far my favourite of your videos to date. There are some solid recommendations here.
I have a Naim audio amplifier and KEF tower speakers from 1995 that have been restored to new condition. At least I'm a music gentleman.
Great recommendations James ! Great work !❤
Don't forget Bill Evans and the Bill Evans Trio! Trio '65 is an amazing album, and in a similar vein is Art Blakey.
Stan Getz, New York Trio, Chet Baker, Duke Ellington, Paul Desmond
Great suggestions, and Sade can do no wrong in music. May I suggest Basia with her bossa nova groove music, yes, she had a more pop sound but a very nice and powerful voice.
The Velvet Underground for its artistic perspective and Donovan, Duran Duran is also good
Excellent recommendations. Classical is the next step. Tchaikovsky and rachmaninoff
Chopin
Joan Chamorro band with Andrea Motis

*Classical:* Wolfgang Mozart of course! /Joseph Haydn.
*Baroque:* Vivaldi / J.S. Bach
*Romantic:* Schubert / Schumann / Beethoven / Dvorak / Mendelssohn / Richard Wagner / Shostakovich
I really like to listen to Gran Turismo inspired mixes. I think the Gran Turismo genre combines the best of instrumentals with percussion and bass. It really helps me focus and can make driving a lot of fun. I’ve found at a lower volume it can work really well with company in the car.
I think moons safari by Air is another extremely sophisticated album and is phenomenal to starting the day with
If you love Sade and Chris Isaak, I bet you would adore Boz Scaggs. Have you listened to his Silk Degrees album?
Man, Station To Station is awesome
Ernest Ranglin has good jazz music that crosses over into reggae. Very unique
thanks a lot for sharing such a delightful taste in music which I can relate to.
I would simply add that the like of Joe Pass, Wes Montgomery or Dave Brubeck to name just of few fit well the Jazz Genre.
Bands like Yellowjackets or Fourplay and guitarist Martin Taylor for a twist of modernity are superb adds on.
Miles Davis Kind of Blue and Filles De Kilimanjaro are exquisite. Also Nat King Cole and Dean Martin are favorites..
thank you sir I've been waiting for this video for a long time❤
Great video!
My man! You dig Ike Quebec, too? My favorite is Soul Samba but Blue And Sentimental is a close second.
Luis Miguel & José José, amongst others, are excellent for the Bolero genre.
thank you for the play list
Get back into that vinyl. I wash and restore records as a hobby. A vintage Technics deck isn’t that expensive and it is hard to beat!
Great job James!
If a gentleman has a lady over for dinner, one whom he likes quite a bit, at some point in the evening will likely put on Leroy Hutson's eponymously titled album "Hutson."
Sax Smooth Jazz of Grover Washington JR, Tom Scott, Najee, Weather Report, Yellow Jackets, Boney James, & etc. (smile)
Fantastic and creative video idea! Keep up the good work.
This is gold
I enjoyed this video thoroughly. However, I just wanted to add George Michael to the list. While “Careless Whisper” is a classic, there are so many more songs like “Waiting For That Day”, “Spinning The Wheel”, and “Cowboys And Angels”. George was a very classy artist.
