Prior to finding your video I had taken off the carb as well. Had no Idea what I was looking at so decided to put back together. Now after watching your video I am going to attempt it again and check those jets on mine.
Awesome. Yes, try cleaning them out first. If you decide to drill them, you might need a set of those micro drill bits and a handheld drill bit holder. It's a little tight to get in there to drill them out since the drill bits are a little to short.
Excellent video, we'll explained, I had this same exact issue with my machine. I watched your video several times, and I had the same blocked jet as you showed using a light to shine through it, mine was plugged. Cleaned it all, and now it's running perfect. Thank you for saving me $$$

I had this exact issue on my Mower (same model) I had cleaned the carb completely (I thought) with no luck still surged .Then I watched your post and realized I hadn't checked those jets.. I did the light test and sure enough one side was clogged .Did the welding tip deal ,put it back together and it runs perfect no surge at all.. Thanks for the great Tips. Rick

Very nice and thorough video! I will be referring to this video in the future. I just got a 2002 craftsman ltx1000 from a friend. It has a Briggs and Strat 21.5 hp V-twin motor. Though I am not currently having any carb issues, I've been searching videos trying to find one that looks like mine... this one looks very similar but mine has a little valve like thing at the bottom of the left side intake manifold that was draining gas directly onto the exhaust pipe. I quickly shut off the mower and grabbed some fuel line, directed it off to the side and zip tied it to the throttle cable. The mower was flooding out pretty badly so I grabbed me a carb adjusting tool (hammer) and tapped the carb a good couple times and it cleared right up, stopped leaking fuel and has ran great since. But, after a few uses, I was wiping the end of that tube off cause I saw debris on it and noticed it has vacuum to it! So it's been sucking dirt into the motor, that's always good, and it seems to have zero effect whether its plugged or not. And I can't seem to find any diagrams to determine where or what that valve thingy should be attached to. I've watched several videos and can't seem to find one exactly like mine... maybe you have an idea of what I'm taking about? Guess in the meantime I'll leave it plugged so its not sucking in dirt.

For viewers with this issue, there are several of these videos and each covers a different issue with this model. I recommend watching several before taking the time to dismount and open your carb up. No mater what, buy the gasket kit now, you're absolutely going to need it.

Saved me a ton of money. I just took the plate off the of the carburetor (3 screws) carefully removed the gasket sprayed carb cleaner in all the gas ports put the gasket and plate back on. It runs better than it has in years! THANK YOU !!!!!

@@JLPicard440. mine did not have those jets in that tube going into the bowl over the emulsion tubes it was a black plastic tube with just 4 holes in it. over the emulsion tubes but up in the carb under the metal plate is where it was plugged up. the left side was halfway blocked off. so a welding tip cleaner and compressed air and it is doing good. 4:04 to 4:53 is that tube and 6:50 to 8:53 is those jets i had blocked. i think if i have that issue again i will just take the plate off and blow them out without removing the carb and see if that cures it. those may be the achelies heal in this carb. and mine was the left one also the guy i got it from said the left side had a missfire, and all it looks like it had was this blocked port. thanks again no need to reply.

Top notch video. I cleaned my bowl, found a disformed o'ring at the base of the jets tube, but didnt take that tube off to reveal MORE jets. I will certainly try that. I dont understand the mechanical governor to throttle setup, but that's a topic for another video

That did it! One of those jets was clogged.I used brake cleaner and wire to clean the out like what you did. Except I didn’t pull the carb. I put a new carb on a tractor that had been sitting. It ran fine for about a week, drained all the old gas out replaced all fuel lines, filter even a new pump. That old gas had clogged those new jets up. Thanks for the video!

Great info on that style carburetor! I’ve had success with soldering up jets that were too big and redrilling them to correct size :)

Thanks Brother. I've been having to clear my B&S V-Twin Commercial Turf carburetor's emulsion tubes and Main Jets every 6 weeks or so for 6 years! So aggravating.... The surging seems to be built into the carb design. I regularly change both the air filter and pre-filter. My Snapper Pro has that Cyclonic air filter housing. I now use a fuel filter from each side fuel tank, another before the pump, and another after the pump. I usually run ethanol free gas, and that octane rating is 92-93 ($$), but it's the only ethanol free around here (central FLA). I occasionally must use reg 89 octane 10% ethanol fuel. Yesterday, I replaced all my O-rings and gaskets, Pump vacuum line, and 6 year old fuel pump withy real B&S parts during my carb clean out, but now strangely the surging is WORSE! I did notice my mains were a little wobbly although I have never actually pulled them out, so I didn't think to order those O-rings. I usually just poke with a wire if clogged, but after watching your excellent tech dump here, I realize I need those two little O-rings for the main jets. Thanks! You saved me hundreds of dollars! 😃I was just about to order a whole new Carb when I found your video.

My carb had the same problem with same jet. Fix it and about a week later same problem with the same jets. Although I only have 40 hours on my mower it’s had ethanol gas sitting in it for 5 years. I may have bad fuel line between the new filter and the carb. Also I am running non ethanol now. Learned my lesson on that the hard way. Thanks for a great video.
You're welcome! I think I would look in the gas tank and see if there's any sediment floating around in the bottom and if so, drain the gas and flush it out with a water hose and let it dry. Replace the fuel line and filter again with new. You'd be surprised how easy a newly cleaned carburetor can be re-contaminated.. If the gas tank is in the back of mower where you have to take apart a lot to get it out, try removing the fuel line and flushing out the gas tank and let it drain out. If you have an air compressor blow around inside to try and force anything out the drain.... just leave the whole mower out in the sun so the tank can dry.

Not many videos on this carb out there. It’s the same or very similar carb to the Kawasaki fx850. Mine had the same issue with a high rpm surge. It was the low speed jet under the plate. Thank you sir!!!!

Thanks for posting these. Now at least I know what I'm getting myself into. The last carb I worked on runs great!...except that the turtle and the rabbit are reversed...lol After I finish with this John Deere I'll probably have to mow the lawn in reverse.

Great video. I've having a surging problem on my 2007, Husqvarna LGT2654 with the 26hp Intek V-twin with 720 hours. I have rebuilt the carburetor twice over the last 16 years, but my last rebuild left me with a surge in the midrange. I will take the carburetor back off and check the low speed jets. Thanks.

Well I am back. I hope you see this.
You make it look easy, I am embarrassed.
I bought a spare Carb. assembly and intake man. for my Briggs on E-bay a couple of years ago. I think I rebuilt the spare not sure. I am having the surging problem again. I will do what you did here to the spare to make sure it is working before installation.
I replaced the fuel pump with an electric pump. "I hate the plastic vacuum fuel pump".
I also re-ran the fuel line straighter through the chasey (gravity feed) from tank to pump.
I t was running good but I added Sea Foam to my tank (Dah, I thought it a good idea at the time) and a few minutes into mowing it started to surge.
I will never use SF again. I think SF loosened some crap and it clogged my Carb. I will find out today.

HI Toolman.. I like the idea of the electric fuel pump. Is it made for a briggs? I'm wondering if the fuel pressure is compatible with the factory pump is what I'm thinking. If you use an electric fuel pump in an older car with a carburetor you usually need a regulator to keep the carburetor from getting damaged. Yes the seafoam may have freed up some junk that was in there. I don't know if that's a bad thing, it probably would have come out later.
@@JLPicard440 Hi I have had the pump installed for a while now. I have had no problems with the pump. The pump I have is a low pressure. 2 to 3.5 psi
pressure. It is a good rate for the B&S motor. I tested it before connection to Carb. It has a good output. Better that stock. Some have gone with a higher rating witch requires a regulator. I have not needed one. I hear the higher pressure pump floods the Carb. when idling.

If I knew how I could send the Amazon page to you. It is easy to find it comes right up. I also talked to my local parts store and he said I should have no problem with that pump. Is there a way to get your e-mail? I can send it to you.
I wired it direct to the Fuel valve in the Carb with a toggle switch in the dash incase I wanted to shut the pump off for some reason.

it will come right up. It is a sturdy, black, plastic pump including a metal inlet filter and 2, 1/4-20 mounting bolts. I drilled and tapped the frame.
Just make sure it is what I said,,
* 2 to 3.5 PSI. *
Bang4Buck has stronger PSI's but they are different color coded. Black is the magic color :O)
It is 20 bucks. If you should do this please let me know how it works out. I'm sure you will like it! I like mine. I like doing stuff like this, very much.

@@CorbinAce HI John..... I might do a video on this subject.... I have a Toro with a Toro v-twin engine, but I'd say it would work just the same way as the briggs. I found it on Amazon, but the one I found has 5/16 fittings on it.. Is that the one you got? I'm thinking a 1/4 line will slide over it, but it'd be a bit tight.

Great video. If this doesn't work for you try this. I have cleaned my Nikki double barrel carburetor on a John Deere Z535M 3 times and it would only work for about an hour and then it would start surging again. I had to look elsewhere. So I took out the gas tank a gave it a good rinsing. There was a lot of dirt in the tank. I also removed the tube going into the tank and blew it out. After all that the machine works great so far. I have manged to cut the grass for more than an hour now. Just thought I would mention this because everyone looks to a dirty carburetor first, which I did. I hope this helps someone.

I had a similar issue but the reason my engine was surging was there was a tiny crack in the plastic intake manifold. It was starting to split on the seem. Crazy glue and baking soda mix sealed it up great.

My tractor had a mean popping out the exhaust at wide open throttle with no load. Engage the mower deck and the engine smoothed out. I changed coils, plugs, fuel filter, fuel pump, checked and set valve clearance twice to verify that it was right. No improvement. I tore the carb and intake manifold off to find the gaskets that seal intake manifold to the heads had been leaking due to corrosion from mouse urine. This engine had a big ol nest at the top end under the cover when I got it. The o rings were flattened out, and combustion blow by had scorched them. I couldn't get gaskets from the dealership as they had none in stock and were indefinitely on back order. I crafted some standard paper gaskets from some hi temp gasket material that I had in my shop. Traced the intake flanges, and cut them to fit each bank perfectly. Cleaned the cylinder gasket surface with scotchbrite pads and put it back together. It now runs like new again.

Two weeks ago my wife showed me a picture on Facebook of a guy selling an Ariens 20HP Briggs and Stratton 46 inch riding mower for $200 with the caption..."the engine lops". I immediately took that to mean "it surges" and called the guy. Looking at it, it was in extremely good condition and the fellow said, "You can have it for $150". So of course I bought it on the spot. Took it home, each cylinder on a compression test revealed 130 psi and I knew I had a winner. Took the carburetor off and found the lower two jets to be stopped up.
Went online, ordered a jet cleaning wire kit and a carb kit, used the smallest wire to clean out the jets, put in the new carb rebuild pieces and bingo it runs like a brand new engine. Didn't even have to adjust the valves as they were correct. This mower was made in 2013 and is a way better mower than my six month old Husqvarna. You need two mowers when you're retired. Now here's the problem I have. I FEEL LIKE I STOLE IT, when I've never ever stolen anything in my life. Should I go back to the guy and give him a couple hundred more bucks, or simply be happy that I stole it from him due to his ignorance?
@@dazeofmylife You're asking me a moral question! If you feel compelled to do that, then who am I to try and change your mind. You could look at it this way, the guy knew there was a problem and disclosed it to you and was agreeable to sell it for that price. If you were able to fix it fairly easy, then that's a bonus, but you yourself took a chance that it was going to need a more expensive and extensive repair to get it back on the road... Like you said, you didn't even know how the compression test was going to turn out. I buy used mowers all the time, I don't see it as stealing it if I was able to fix it, since the people knew there were problems with the mower that needed fixed. Hope that helps..
The flip side is trying to deceive the seller into selling the item for cheaper because the seller didn't know any better. For example, if you see an assortment of costume jewelry at a yard sale, but see a solid gold necklace among the costume jewelry and get it for 2 dollars because the seller didn't know any better, then that's a good example of stealing.

Gotcha.... Sometimes I'm able to take it apart and salvage the gaskets. If you're going to get new ones anyway, it's worth a try....

Do you have an idea if the 22HP engine has the same carburator and gaskets??
My engine it is 896cc, 31HP, I asumme it is some older version, the previous owner told me that was sitting in his garage for 10 years.
There are some new engines with 37HP. If you have some knowledge, parts number, carburator , gasket kit ordering numbers please light me with some info
HI, I don't know off hand. I usually go to www.partstree.com. I would get the engine model number and type... sometimes you need the serial number to get the build range. See if that nets any results. Those HP numbers seem unusual... maybe because they are EU models?
Try the easy stuff first. Plugs, air cleaner, fuel filter. Check fuel pump flow. Mine was still surging and running rough after this so as a last resort I put some seafoam in the gas. It ran like new after that but I really don't think the seafoam had a chance to work its way to the carb. I think the initial steps did the trick and it just took a bit to burn off the unburned gas in the cylinders from running rich.
It's possible.. I would tend to believe that seafoam worked its way into the carburetor. But no way to know for sure.. Glad it's up and running!... 🙂
This discussion made me start wondering about machines designed for locality, specifically elevation as it affects lean or rich mixtures. Is the machine sold in Denver Colorado which of course is the mile high going to be the same machine sold to me on the East Coast at sea level? If I were buying used parts on eBay for example should I be paying attention for this reason to parts locations?
That's a good question. I honestly don't know if they make a separate high elevation carburetor that's jetted differently. But you're absolutely right. I am a private pilot and on the carbureted airplanes there is a fuel mixture to adjust as you climb in altitude.. I guess on the newer fuel injected ones, the computer does the mixture since there's no longer a manual control.
Great video! Thank you especially for going into detail about the different sized jets. Been trying to figure out why Cylinder 2 always runs about 30F hotter than Cylinder 1 - thought it might be mixed up jets, but a new carb shows no change. Do your cylinders have a large temp difference as well? Maybe it's just normal for these engines.
Arrgh... I don't know. I've never measured them individually to see if they're different. I would think the new carb has the jets in the correct order. Have u tried to google the problem to see if it's normal?
@@JLPicard440 Thanks for the reply! I tried searching, but temperature information for these small air cooled engines seems to be impossible to find! Briggs themselves don't list temp information anywhere, strangely enough.
Though I did discover that the plastic engine shroud has a little barrier molded into it which blocks most of the airflow to Cylinder 2! There's my 'problem'. I don't think I'll mess with it since it's clearly intentional, though I'm curious why Briggs designed the engine so that Cylinder 2 runs both richer and hotter. Maybe they leaned out Cylinder 1 so much to meet emissions targets that they had to divert most of the cooling air to that cylinder? No clue; but thanks again for the insight your video provided, it solved one piece of the puzzle!
Ahh yes. Emissions. That makes sense. Many vehicles from time past used to run around 180 degrees. Now they run at about 210. I'm not sure exactly why they do that, but I would guess something to do with emissions too.
@@JLPicard440 So I finally ran across a definitive answer from Briggs on this subject on an old forum post!
Apparently, cylinder 2 is the one that is supposed to be leaner/have the smaller jet. This seems to be the main reason why cylinder 2 runs hot, and this is intentional. The airflow issue seems to have been a red herring, as I tried drilling some holes in the blockage, and the temps did not significantly decrease (though it helped a little).
The V-twins originally had a single main jet. Due mostly to emissions reasons, they switched to two main jets so they can lean out cylinder 2, since that cylinder has reduced power output due to firing shortly after the 'main' cylinder 1 anyway.
It is apparently completely fine to switch back to the single main jet, or use the richer cylinder 1 jet for cylinder 2. You'll just get slightly higher emissions and use slightly more gas. And possibly gain a little horsepower, though as Briggs states the difference won't be much since cylinder 2 contributes much less than cylinder 1.
I think I will try using two cylinder 1 jets next time I have the carb apart and see how my temps look like then.

Thank you! Flushing out the tank depends on how long fuel has been sitting in there. If you look in the tank and see some junk in the bottom, then yea removing and flushing with water is the best way to clean that out. At a minimum flush the fuel line with air, but that probably won't get everything out. It's best to replace the fuel line if it's bad or connect them to a water hose and flush with water too. I've found that sea foam will only work for a very mild problem. IF the carb is all goopy then, sea foam won't work at all...
My john deere gt245 surges at high speed idle only. Throttle down, its runs good. Runs good with blade on. When it surges at high speed, and its surging if i give it just a little choke, the surging quits. Does that sound like the main jet is ok, but the 2 small jets you shown a light through is the clog?
Yes that's possible. I would bet the main jet is ok..

I fixed mine by disconecting the fuel line at the filter, spraying carb cleaner only intlo the fuel line untill it sputtered and knew carb cleaner got in the bowl. Let it sit for about 10 minuites, reconnected fuel line been running fine for over a year now.
Yes that'll work if it's a very mild case. Ive seen some that are so dirty I'm in there with a Dremel and a steel wool to get it clean!
Wonder if this is the same for the 28HP commercial turf versions. My 2014 commercial turf is starting to surge when not under load.

HI, yea it usually won't surge at full throttle or if it's under load either. It could be the same problem, but without taking it apart to look at it, there's no way to know for sure... 😀

Can you please advise me. The engine ran fine, but after an hour of driving it started smoking and misfiring (exactly like in your video). When I took out the spark plugs, gas came out of the cylinders. I disassembled the carburetor but the float seals well.
Hmmm I was going to say float. Check the oil and see if it smells like gas... ? Sounds like its dumping gas into the engine. How bout the choke? Is it working properly and releasing all the way?
i want to try the Viton o rings and try a alternitive gasket material that wont be affected by the Ethanol and cut them myself cork? have that on hand as well as standard gasket material There are probably Several better choices out there that would fit the bill but I CANT GUARENTEE A ENGINEERED FAILURE POINT They could end up lasting the life of the mower and lead to reintroducing some outdated build concepts that dosent seek to capitalize on FAILURE POINTS And still manage to be Solvent as a COMPANY. I Will Have to get back to you on this I think I just discovered my Lifes Purpose.
Nice! I don't think I would use the cork. Cork tends to "squeeze out" when you tighten the bolts down. Sounds like a good project for sure... 😀

I have a older model of this intek motor I think its a 1st gen before got named intek. The problem with it is that when I got it I had to tighten the exhaust valve a bit to make it turn over due to not relieving compression now it runs too rich to the point it burns my eyes when mowing do you have any clue what might be the problem thanks
HI Esau.. If you take the carburetor back off check the side that bolts to the engine. Behind the throttle butterfly there's a black plastic block there with about 5 holes in it. If you take that butterfly off, then take the plastic block off.. I think there's one Philips screw, look at the gasket behind it. Those 5 holes should be free and clear. Sometimes they can get plugged and this will cause a little rich problem. Also, if you had the carburetor off and apart, make sure you didn't mix up the jets in the bottom of the bowl. Those can get backwards since they're two different sizes. This can also cause a problem. Hope that helps.. If your gasket is bad the P/N is 841649

The throttle cable hooks into some linkages that actually go up to the carburetor. Unless you move the thing that the throttle cable was connected to, it probably won't change the speed of the engine.

Yes a lot of times a small engine will run good while under load, and not so much when running with no load.
Replace the rubber intake manifold gasket and silicone also
Look for warping on where carb mounts
Thanks for the tips! Yes if there's a slight vacuum leak it could cause a problem, but I can't agree with using silicone on that... The factory doesn't use silicone, just a new gasket... 😀

I have a Vtech in my Troy Bilt and it makes a God-awful thumping/thudding when I kill the engine.
Not dieseling -- but that's what it sounds and feels like.

Maybe take the top cover of the engine off and see if it still does that. Don't run it more than a couple of minutes or it'll run hot...

I see this has the auto choke on it,,, and a Husqvarna Zero Turn,,,,, I just rebuilt carb on my carb, But I am having Problems hooking Linkage back up,,,It is a nikki Carb and has 3 linkages,,,,,,,I have searched and you are the first that I have seen working on auto choke carb,,,, So is it anywaay that you can show the linkage hook up on right side of carb facing motor from rear,,, Left side is self explaining,,,,,, BTW carb is fixed but cannot hook up linkage

Maybe your local mower shop? There are also some sites dedicated to mower parts online, but not sure if you'll find a parts breakdown to isolate the jets in the carburetor..
My intek powerd 2010 has this carb. I removed the bowl and the 2 jets fell out, Went to dealer the mechanic told me to install the large orfice on the side with the longer intake tube. He sold me a set of new jets c/w o rings, they were inexpensive.

If my engine will start but then die a few seconds later, is the carb still suspect? Anything else to check first / in addition to carb?
HI, could be the carburetor... could be a clogged gas cap, or could be a spark plug... I think the gas cap would take more than a few seconds if that was the culprit, but try loosening it anyway or take it off and run it and see if anything Changs. Thats the easiest thing to try.

I have a 25 hp briggs and stratton v-twin. My mower was surging. I have replaced the carb, plugs, fuel pump and filter. Mower is still surging any suggestions?
Wow, yea that should have taken care of it. Are you sure the fuel lines didn't contain a contaminant and re-contaminate your new carburetor? Usually that surging is a carburetor problem. I would try cleaning the new one out and pay special attention to the low side jets that I show in the video here. There may be something in there. They might possibly have to be drilled out slightly bigger if cleaning doesn't work.
Check your fuel cap vent by simply slightly unscrewing it and seeing if that makes a difference.
