@@MzNesi50 hi! I just used two different sized circle cutters. One cut out the shape and one just made an indent. Then I used a straight tool to make the line in the middle.
Any tips for someone who has no cake making experience? I really want to make something similar for my little boy’s birthday, but I don’t want to spend a ton on cake supplies. Should I make my own fondant and try to get the colors I need?
Hi! That’s how I started!! When I started I didn’t think there was any way to learn how to decorated besides just practicing. I always loved making stuff out of clay so I guess those skills helped me with fondant. There are a ton of UA-cam tutorials to show you how to make things. And heck, you can just buy a cake mix from a box if you don’t want to bake from scratch yet. Michaels has cake decorating supplies and fondant that you can get and if you have a dollar tree nearby, they started carrying some decorating tools. A lot of details can be made by hand so don’t worry about not having cutters for it. I do suggest to make a buttercream for the outside of the cake. The frosting they sell at the stores do not firm up so the cake decorations will just slide everywhere. Good luck and happy caking!!
Could you tell me how to refrigerate a buttercream cake with fondant figures, and if it can be decorated days before or if the fondant is ruined? I would greatly appreciate it🙏❤️
Hi! I refrigerate my cakes with fondant for about 1-2 days. It usually won't get ruined but it depends on your fridge. If your fridge creates condensation I would keep the cake in a cardboard box as it will absorb some of the extra condensation. But I keep my cakes in the fridge all the time and they're fine :)
I love this thank you! I want to make this Mario head to put on top of a cake. Any tips to making the flatter head sturdy enough to put on top with some skewers? Perhaps just a backing?
Hi!! Yes I would make sure the fondant has tylose powder mixed in first. Then once you have your template paper cut out, roll out a thick piece of fondant and trace out the shape with the template. Then if the fondant is thick enough, insert the skewer inside the center of the fondant. If it's thick but not quite thick enough for the skewer to go through, lay your fondant down, and press your skewer down onto the fondant, just don't go all the way through. I usually make sure the skewer is glued with my edible glue. Then start gluing your other pieces of fondant on top of the skewer. I hope that all makes sense. Make sure to let it dry for about 2 days. Then you'll be ready to use it as a topper :)
Hi! tks for sharing. :) Totally newbie here and gonna try something like this soon. Do you know if i can make just the figures many days before and then just glue then on the cake kinda one day before the party?
Oh yes totally!! Whenever I have a cake with a lot of fondant work I make them in advance. I had a wedding cake with 450 sugar flowers and I started making them a month in advance. Usually if I have a lot of fondant work for the week I will make it a week in advance. It gives them time to dry and keep their shape so they still look great once you add it to the cake :)

What size is your cake? 3 x 6in? I want to make something similar but unsure how high / wide to make the cake!
Hi! It's a 5"cake. 6.5" tall. Yours doesn't have to be exactly that size. It will still look good with a 6"cake
Thanks for replying 🙏🏾🙏🏾🩷
