      Personally, I’d like to see guys opening up more, taking more chances, and wrestling with a sense of urgency to score points in ALL periods (not just the last 30 seconds).

    It's ALWAYS the same dynamic between Iowa and Penn State. Tom Brands, Mr. Cliche himself, continually repeats the same lines about working harder and competing more intensely, but Penn State focuses on technical and strategic refinement, which inevitably results in Penn State wrestlers being better prepared and more often than not, better than the Iowa wrestlers. And by the time the NCAA finals takes place, we see Penn State wrestler dominating, and Iowa wrestlers (with the exception of Spencer Lee and rare others ) fading.

    • @jessem_i31
      @jessem_i31 Рік тому +2

      This is why PSU guys do better in international competition. They're all in great shape but like the rest of the top countries in the world, they focus more on technique.
      Iowa guys (most, but not all) are banged up and by the time the finals come around they've passed their peak.

    • @francostacy7675
      @francostacy7675 Рік тому +5

      I agree. Brands are always about wrestling harder, wrestlers more intensely, wanting it more, sucking it up…that’s all they got. And when they try to get smarter like Penn State, there big smart move….medical forfeits in the big ten tournament, claim it’s all about the wrestlers and then they underachieve in the NCAAs and Penn state holds service or over achieves. PSU is more technical and tactical. What wrestler evolved at Iowa? …what wrestler doesn’t evolve at PSU? Even Spencer Lee would be better and healthier if he had went to Penn St

    • @l.rongardner2150
      @l.rongardner2150 Рік тому +1

      @@francostacy7675, you nailed it. If the Brand bros. can't provide the technical and tactical sophistication for their wrestlers, they need to bring in an assistant who can, because strength, conditioning, toughness, and will to win aren't enough to beat Penn State.

    • @michaelbradley7621

      Yea PSU is doing something correctly. Their guys seem to continuously develop while iowa wrestlers get to a high level of wrestling and then plateau. Take Brooks and Assad or RBY and Desanto or Kerk and Cassioppi. They all started at roughly the same age and level, or iowas guys originally had them beat, but the PSU guys kept improving and now Iowa will never win those matchups again.

      Actually if it had gone that way it would’ve gone 17-16 Penn State. Say if Ayala got a major at 125 lbs, and then Spencer beats RBY at 133 lbs by decision. That’s 7 points in the beginning. Now if we go on with the rest of the meet as it happened, Iowa scored 9 more team points, meaning they would have 16 points. Penn State would have most their points, except if Spencer beats RBY, we take away the 6 points he got for Penn State, bringing down the total score to 17 points for Penn State. Either way Iowa would’ve lost to Penn State

    I find your reaction and Flo's reaction both perfectly valid. It comes down to taste probably. I think the message Penn State sent is they can defend their title and it's up to someone else to take it from them, which in the tournament this year more than last is going to have to be a collective effort from multiple teams. But that won't be enough to get anyone other than Penn State over the top. A couple guys might get bumped off, though, if they don't bring it.

    Part of the "problem" is we've been spoiled recently. Zain, Bo, Ruth, Taylor, Nolf.....all of them were atypical point scoring pinners in the very biggest of matches, even among our greatest wrestlers. This Penn State team might possibly have 9 AA's and 5 champs in the line-up, yet might not be as dynamic as a whole when compared to the guys above. RBY is a clear exception. We have biases from history, and they inform our perceptions of current events. Penn State's all-time greats have been so amazing at showing us what wrestling "can" look like that when we see other great wrestlers who aren't quite as dynamic we feel something is lacking.

    So it's 125-Nothing.
    165-Facundo could easily AA and Van Ness who could ALSO AA.
    And Penn State had TWO guys who were impressive. Kerkvliet and MAYBE Haines just because it was his first match in that environment or RBY who was gonna walk away with a decision until a bad shot by Teske.

    So I correctly guessed 8 of the 10 matches and I correctly guessed 6 of the 10 outcomes. I would have had 7 of 10 but no one expected a 174lbs to take on Brooks at 184.
    If you pay attention there are no real surprises it seems until the NCAA championships.

      I just rewatched and took notes. Carter had 9 shot attempts (legit attempts, not level changes, etc) in the first 2 rounds. Brands had 2. Yes, Carter stalled the last 30 seconds when he had a warning to give but up until than he was way more offensive. All Brands did was push and pull on the head. Even when he snapped the head he kept his feet planted in 1 spot so he obviously wasn't trying anything more than to tire him out.
