The 3 consecutive wins by Nino, Parris, and Glory were all really nice to see. Three seniors who had been the NCAA finals and fallen short, return to claim their first titles at the end of an undefeated season in what is (likely) each guy's final NCAA match. Those are beautiful moments, and I enjoyed seeing the emotions from all three guys. But I do agree with you that Vito's win at 133 was the standout moment. He was scary good. Freakishly fast. I had never really viewed him as a guy who could win an Olympic gold medal in freestyle. But I need to reassess that now. To outscore Fix and RBY 21-7 in a 24 hour period is just insane. I'm a Michigan alum, but Vito was CLEARLY the Outstanding Wrestler of the tournament. (Parris for Hodge, though!).

Just my $.02, but I think Vito was the clear Outstanding Wrestler of the tournament.. but I would say the Hodge should go to Parris. Hodge isn't a lifetime achievement award, and Mason was the most Dominant THIS season.

Good to see parody. NCAA champs from conferences.
    Big 10 3 champs
    EIWA 3 champs
    Big 12 2 champs
    ACC 2 champs
Most all Americans still Big 10. With more runners ups (7)
Since my first post above I saw was Vito is OW.
    What a tournament.
Vito is well deserving of OW. What’s great is all the valid arguments for other weight classes being the toughest like 165 and 197. If Carr had won he would be hands down the OW and Hodge for me. Especially with the pathway he had. Beating a runner up and champ to make it to the finals.
165 having 3 champs, and a two runners ups(Griffith counts twice).
    197. Two finalist from last year did not make it back to the finals. The champ ( a former runner up) did not place last year.
174 Carter was so dominant that we forget how tough his weight class was.
125, 133, 165, 174, 197 all had former champs that did not repeat.
Six weights had returning runner ups who did not make it back to the finals.
Several first time All Americans, several who got back to the podium who did not do it last year.
Then there are all the former All Americans that did not repeat.
Finally, Ramos’s vision quest with parallels to Larry Owings. Last year when Ramos was at 133 he pinned Luca Byrd. He drops to 125 and pins Lee in a similar fashion.
We remember more of what Gable did after his loss to Owings. I hope the same for Spencer and he goes on to win gold at the Olympics.

No we cannot let it become a lifetime, it needs to remain individual seasons. If they want to make a lifetime achievement award they need to do that, the Hodge trophy should remain year to year. As far as I'm concerned if you got a loss you cannot win it over and undefeated wrestler in that season barring extreme circumstances like a vast number of pins or something. Including his pettiness against teammate Ayala, GOAT-to-goat Lee needs to grow up. Cael lost internationally, Dake has lost 10-0. Burroughs, Cox, and Taylor have all lost and learned. If he’d beaten Ramos, would Lee have forfeited out of the final? Grace in defeat (see teammate Woods, Dean after consolation path) says more about a person’s character than winning ever does.

Poor coaching and match plan for Lee.All Lee had to do was just wrestle Ramos and stay out of positions he could get thrown to his back !!once in a lifetime opportunity lost by forgetting and not planning against what happened their first meeting !!!Glory showed why he is an Ivy Leaguer. He was smart and didn’t expose himself to upsetting match changing throws!!!Spencer is by far a better wrestler than Ramos!!!Spencer and his coaches should have planned much better for this!match ,especially with so much at stake!!!Also when Real Woods reached and got his arms around Alirez in the same body lock manner Lee did with Ramos ,it backfired on him as it did Spencer !!!Woods and Lee probably would have been National champions if they would have made their opponents just wrestle them with their skill set and stayed clear of dangerous moves!! In both Iowa high stakes losses coaches nationwide should learn from what happened and teach their wrestlers in high stakes matches what they need to know!!!

Based on the season, Lee earned the Hodge Trophy. The biggest problem I see is not him getting pinned, it happens. The problem could be dropping out of the tournament after the loss. If you think it was a medical reason ask yourself if he would have wrestled in the final if he won. Would have been great to see him get to 100 wins if he secured two more wins.

You see how important getting an early lead is. Your probability of winning goes up immediately. Arujau and RBY are pretty even talent wise, but if you give a great wrestler a big lead good luck. The wrestling was great in most of the matches. I like how the freedom of movement has changed so much throughout the years.
I am a little surprised though how many wrestlers are so comfortable rolling from any position, and getting into body locks in close matches. Many of them get caught. They should strategize better than that, but hey it makes it exciting.
