In 1997, Iowa had 5 champions, 6 finalists, and 8 All Americans.
If you look at Penh State’s lineup, it’s absolutely stacked. But only 4 guys are the favorites to win. 7 guys could realistically make the finals - Nagao, Bartlett, Van Ness, Haines, Carter, Brooks, and Kerkvliet. 100 placement points if there are 4 champs and 7 finalists. You figure that Truax is an absolute lock to place top 5 AT LEAST, so we’ll give him an extra 10 points being conservative. Gonna be honest, I think there are too many sleepers for Robbie Howard to place - DeAugustino and Ayala are outside the top 8 looking in. Mesebrink could be REALLY GOOD, but even then the top 8 at 165 is stacked. I don’t see how you make Mesenbrink the favorite over a guy like Pat Kennedy. So that’s 110 placement points.
Looking at the whole lineup, I’m gonna just throw a speculative number out there - Penn State will get an average of three championship bracket wins per weight class. The only guys who are a threat to lose in the rd of 16 are Mesenbrink and Howard. That’s an absurd thing to consider, because you add 30 advancement points right there. Throw in a few extra because you know the guys I said are favorites to reach the finals will get some extra. Call it 35 advancement points, 145.
So you have 10 guys wrestling a collective 45ish matches. Can they win 25 of those matches with bonus points? This is where things get sketchy for Penn State. They will dominate advancement and placement points, but who on this list is going out and dominating the scoreboards in the vein of Taylor, Booth and gang? Let’s look at their margins from the 2023 tournament to get some idea.
Nagao- 3 bonus point wins. That’s better than I thought before checking the brackets, while pinning Phillips smells flukish, majoring Zach Redding is a good litmus test for his level of competition next year. One pin and two majors - 4 points
Bartlett - 1 Major over Clay Carlson. How does he major Carlson and not Shannon Hanna? Probably because it was their 2nd match of the tournament. Regardless, we know that Bartlett, like Van Ness, made some kind of late season jump in skill, and will at least replicate this next year. 5 total points.
Van Ness - 1 pin over Ethen Miller. This counts as 2 extra points. Let’s call it that in case he gets two majors, which seems more likely for next year. 7 total points.
Haines - pins Bryce Andonian. This may piss people off, but I’m dinging him one of the extra pin points for my 2024 projections. That pin is probably more Andonian than Haines, as this is not consistent with Haines’ results or style. Give him one by major, 8 points.
Mesenbrink - fuck it, I was man to Haines so I’ll be nice to Mitch, give him one. 9 points.
Starocci - 2 pins. 13.
Truax - 1 major. 14.
Brooks - 1 major, 1 pin. Can he do it at 197? Probably not, but we can shift those points back to Truax since he’s going down it weight, so let’s just call it the way it happened. 17.
Kerkvliet - 1 pin, 1 major. 20 points.
So we get a total of 165, without considering the real balance of consolation advancements and Mesenbrinks ceiling. Poles nailed it bringing this up as the measuring stick for Penn St.’s season, because it’s gonna be CLOSE.
By the time the 2024 recruiting class leaves its mark Cael is going to have surpassed gable and Penn state with firmly be THE name brand of wrestling much like Iowa USED to be. Love it.
Of all the wrestling channels I watch this is the 9nly one to really break the roster battle down like that. Great video
CP, I’m loving these team breakdowns. Keep up the great work brother. 🙏🏼
An interesting follow-up to this video would be a history lesson on how Iowa did it with that team score record and compare it to the team probability you laid out for Penn St.
Iowa fans' feelings are hurt. They know they can't hang with PSU.
Do a breakdown of IOWA lineup next year 🔥
125- Howard
133- Nagao
141- Bartlett
149- SVN
157- Haines/Messenbrink
165- Messenbrink/Haines
174- Starocci
184- Truax
197- Brooks
285- Kerkvliet
the most stacked team in the nation…even their secondaries will be insanely great
125: Robert Howard
133: Aaron Nagao
141: Beau Bartlett
149: Shayne Van Ness
157: Levi Haines
165: Alex Facundo
174: Carter Starocci
184: Bernie Truax
197: Aaron Brooks
HWT: Greg Kerkvilet
These are the runaway team champs and will probably break the score record, and could easily have 8 National Champions in Nagao, Bartlett, Van Ness, Haines, Starocci, Truax, Brooks, and Kerk.
This might be one of the craziest lineups ever, 8 POTENTIAL NATIONAL CHAMPIONS.
They’ll have 10 AA as well, the only team I see competing with them is Michigan and Ohio State.
In terms of Mitchell Mesenbrink, he will take an Olympic redshirt in my eyes and Facundo will go 174 the following year as Mesenbrink takes 165 for 24-25 season.
No way Nagao beats Vito. But other than that, I agree with everything you’ve said. 🙏🏼
@@GuyFromSC Yeah Nagao beating Vito is a stretch, but we don’t know what jumps he can make in a room with Thomas Gilman, Nick Lee, Beau Bartlett, and Zain Retherford. Possibly even rolling around with Nolf. The discussion last season was “Can vito beat RBY” and the answer was “No shot” until it happened. Im excited to see what happens though for sure!
@@jt519 Good point
could "easily" have 8 champs is a huge stretch. There's nothing easy about that. I don't even think Facundo and Van ness will both be champs in the same season. I mean 165 is insane dude and it's only getting crazier with the new crop coming in. Bartlett champ? There's really only two guys that im confident saying will win in that line up.
Rby wasnt the same rby
Is Penn State the Alabama of Wrestling?
Much better
Is Alabama the Penn State of Football?
Nagao is a monster at 133.
Aaron Nagao will win a title at Penn State
2 titles
@@coachjimbo63 he’s already an all american as a freshman. Going to penn state will only make him better. His skill set on top is insane. I wouldn’t put two titles past him at all
That's why I feel he will have a great chance at winning 2 titles.
No way Nagao beats Vito. But other than that, I agree with everything you’ve said. 🙏🏼
Anything is possible at penn state
Vito will likely take an Olympic redshirt
@@dramaking9377 I can’t say I don’t blame him but as a fan, I want to see him run it back. 🙏🏼
I guess you have a plan!!!
I thought you said in the video on Ohio State starters that Shayne Van Ness was returning to Ohio State?
Carter Starocci could be the first and only 5x ncaa champion ever. Thats insane. I doubt a year will be considered free anytime other than the post covid year again.
You're talking Folkstyle vs Freestyle a lot but you need to remember, the entire ruleset has changed in large favor of freestyle!
You do have a plan
Joe sealed n lilledahl going to be a problem on the matt...cpl national titles between them
Cael might just have a plan.
Stats and graohicsss

Penn State are the Yankees of wrestling, because they are the most successful program in recent years and they are looked at as the heroes. Iowa would definitely be the Red Sox of wrestling.
Nothing on Joe Sealy?
Yeah right! PSU is so loaded it's easy to overlook some hammers.
Wow... team is again Stacked...!
Dude, I feel like you can have this video release in 2024, and it sounds like most of these guys will be named. That is crazy. It isn't a stable of talent, it is a farm
Jeez Hidlay should not go up to 197, he's gonna be too small. He should cut to 174
Luke lilledahl
Jacori Teemer is no chump!
Crazy joe guys will take red shirt years and stay in school for 5-6 years just to wrestle because there’s nothing after a college career unless you do MMA or coaching. This sport needs an outlet
Lilledahl 2024 or 2025?
So national titles all around, except for a 2nd at 133. Deal. 🤣 We are..
No mention of Colton Schultz?? Terrible segment!
I dont even live in Iowa but I would bet you that pennix state wont win. Also betting.
Uh peesu walks away with it. Nil has made it impossible for anyone to compete. Peesu has limitless spending. Sucks.
I’ll take that bet
How much $?
@@trout5374 In dinero or american money ?

Penn State will dominate NCAA wrestling for at least the next 3 years….
How many times can these guys enter the portal
Dont like what its doing to the sport! Some of these hammmers will transfer
I think the question is, when will Penn State poach another NC contender. At least Iowa dominated with a balance of recruits and developed in state talent. This dominance is bad for the sport.
Ohio State and NC State poaching guys from Pennsylvania. Save it dude
You're high
@@carducci000 on facts.
Iowa had Spencer lee Austin desanto and a few others from Pennsylvania 😂
Ohio state has Sammy sasso from Pennsylvania nc state has like 7 wrestlers from Pennsylvania
