  • Video of rapid sedation of a broodstock black tiger prawn using a saltwater/ice slurry. The prawn is quickly sedated within 30-45 seconds and will not recover if left in the ice slurry (1-2 parts ice to 1 part water) for more than a couple of minutes. This is a much faster and therefore more humane sedation/dispatch method compared to the chemical anaesthetics that are usually recommended for such purposes. Studies using ECG electrophysiology shows that ice slurry sedates prawns quickly and the heart stops within 30 seconds. Tail flip responses are reflexes as shown by the fact they can still occur when the head is removed.

I am planning to ship live 100grams size prawns in 8-10hours shipping time via air and wondering if you have done successfully?

No, we were sedating them to sample them for disease testing.
