I love what Virgil says. He's not afraid to tell the truth. My experience at the University level was exactly as he described. I had a class in which I was the only person who could actually draw and the instructor seemed to relish in putting my drawings down during critiques while raving about another student's drawings that were nothing but broken lines as very creative.
I ordered Andrew's videos and believe me you will not be disappointed. At 73, about the same age as Virgil, never think you are too old to learn something. Always keep an open mind to LEARN. Here is my take on education. In some cases you will get a head start on learning some techniques in school. Likewise as I invested 4 years of active duty in the Navy we sometimes feel that is part of your life you will never regain...We learn SOMETHING from EVERYTHING we do. I have been a sailor, heavy equipment construction operator, factory worker, textile and apparel designer, advertising Art Director, Creative Director, Exhibit Designer and investor capital raising Director. That being said, keep in mind that at this age after retiring from a corporate career learning from these videos is almost a luxury. These video's, and listening to guys like Virgil Elliott call it like it is, is quite refreshing. I have heard the same remarks from MANY people regarding a University or College education in art. Find yourself an institute that teaches you ART and focus on your craft from the beginning. There are many distractions in life and being a GREAT artist requires a certain degree of discipline from the beginning. No great concert pianist ever became known without sacrificing their time to practice.
Thank you for documenting this man's wisdom for generations to come, and for bringing awareness to other traditional artists of experts and existing resources!
It would be great to see two or three more conversations with Mr. Elliott, but if not I'm glad to have seen even this one. It's great to see someone bursting at the seams with knowledge to share, especially for those of us who receive most of our art training from youtube and other online sources. Thanks to you both!
Wow! I initially thought, "a 2 hour video?" I thought it might be overlong, but how wrong was I?Riveting? Yes. Informative? Definitely! Thought provoking? Most certainly! Wish I had been Virgil's student when I went to college. I don't feel so guilty for dropping out now. I've learned more from watching and studying other artists including you Andrew than any academic system! And your face at 9:18! Says it all. Virgil's scientific explanation on paint, mediums and varnish was so obviously well informed. A shock about Zinc white though! Agree wholeheartedly with the view on abstract expressionism. I think if a painting has to be "explained" in that arty farty way, then it has missed it's purpose. Look forward to your next podcast with Virgil, Andrew! P.S. Have you seen Steffan Baumann's lectures on UA-cam? He would make an interesting guest I reckon.
Thanks to both of you! I ordered Virgil's book from Ebay and read it in just a few days! Loved it and plan to reread it and write myself notes in the margins. I have a BFA and teaching credentials graduating at 46 with a highschool teaching position before I was graduated. I have learned so much through the years but couldn't find time for my oil painting until retirement. I just built my own Art Studio and am going to get back to my own painting! Andrew you and Virgil are the best teachers...I was going to college in my 40's so was old enough that I did not let some of the professors sway me. I am a natural perfectionist. I love details! I am hard on myself but easy-going with my former students. I am going to pursue realism with oils now! I have always enjoyed fine drawing. Thank you both! I am 66 and Art keeps my soul happy and young at heart! Andrew will you write a book? I have been asked to write a teaching book for highschool lessons...but although I have a slew of material...I want to make my own Art....not write! Thank you Virgil for yours and Andrew your videos are invaluable!
Another great podcast Andrew. Many interesting comments and views in this podcast. Enjoyed it a lot. Loved to hear the a very honest and blunt comments by Virgil who dares to tell it like it is. His remarks on the modern art world of the 20th century reminded me of the story "The Emperor's New Clothes" tale written by Danish author Hans Christian Andersen, about two weavers who promise an emperor a new suit of clothes that they say is invisible to those who are unfit for their positions, stupid, or incompetent - while in reality, they make no clothes at all, making everyone believe the clothes are invisible to them. When the emperor parades before his subjects in his new "clothes", no one dares to say that they do not see any suit of clothes on him for fear that they will be seen as stupid. Finally, a child cries out, "But he isn't wearing anything at all!"
Thank you Andrew. This is by far one of the best videos I've ever watched. There is so much information to digest, I'll have to go through the whole pot cast again to get all the gold nuggets. There is so much to learn still. It is great to sit at the feet of masters that has gone through many difficulties to learn what they know today and then share it freely to the young in the arts. Great work. Love your paintings and instructions. Seems that a lot of us has to re-look at how we approached the paints and mediums that we used for future art work
Andrew, That was so packed with great usable information. Mr. Elliott is a bit of a curmudgeon but so full of great information. Elliott has so much experience and was not afraid to share in the lest. I came away from this pod cast feeling like I had just had an art lesson. Your pod casts are very useful. Thank you.
About a year ago I bought this book before knowing of Andrew or Virgil at a Blick art store near a local University, IT WAS ON THE CLEARANCE SHELF! Mine too is an aim at really painting, and traditional methods are centuries tested. I was bestowed with a great wealth of information through this book and purchased Virgil's recommendation today also. Long live oils! Long live books!
Such a good video!! Thank you Andrew! Thank you too dear friend Virgil! You are a true Artist; humble, sweet and generous soul. God bless you with many many long healthy years ahead to enrich many with your creativity in painting and music!
Thank you Andrew for this interview.I really enjoyed it .So informative .I had to replay parts over and over so I don't miss some information. My deep respect to Mr. Elliot .I would very much encourage another interview of course. Thanks for the effort Andrew. Waiting impatiently for the next interview or video.
Definitely need more of these. There's so much info and cultivation when you hear an artist learning from another artist. And it's more productive too, as the streamer "gives" while he also "gets", therefore is not one way only.
A wealth of information there re. materials and their effects, very useful for anyone using oils. Information that only experience can give you. I am enjoying this series thoroughly after discovering it yesterday!
Thank you Andrew and Virgil Elliott for your generosity. What a gift to learn from such vast experience and observation. I'm especially grateful for the mention of LaPage and the technique of glazing. Now, I understand why the Joan of Arc painting at the Metropolitan Museum was so captivating and not just because of its size.
Thank you Andrew once again for a brilliant interview with Virgil Elliot. Always fantastic to hear firsthand from great artists their views and methods. Thank you for making this possible for many of us who would otherwise never have the opportunity to ask those same questions and learn from great and experienced artists.
Wow. Virgil Elliott was an eye opener. I use to use a onion cut in half and wiped over the painting when beading occured. Listening to this artist I have changed my mind about a lot of things one of them being Zinc which I have used for every painting. Now it will be lead. Because we all have common sense and will not be eating the lead paint. Right artists?
What an absolute treat! Thank you Virgil and Andrew for this, so inspiring and generous. Very happy to see that the reprint of Virgil's book is due this month (march 19), I can't wait to get my copy!
Virgil Elliott is a treasure. His book, ‘Traditional Oil Painting’ is fantastic and one of my favorites. Thanks, Andrew, for interviewing him. He is a living master and a voice of reason in an art world dominated by mediocrity and elitism. I completely agree with his assessment of modern art. So much knowledge from the great masters was nearly lost, and, indeed (unbelievably) belittled, but thanks to Elliott and few others, it was saved and is finally making a long-awaited comeback.
Only half way through this video and my head is spinning with all the info. Wow thank you so much. This is why i like your channel so much. I never stop learning.
What an interview Andrew, covered almost every aspect of painting I wished I knew, right from mediums to varnishing.I was so happy when he told about the medium he is using because I couldn't get Liquin or Oleo gel where I live...lol & about modern abstract painting I thought I am a moron as I was unable to understand a tiny bit of it.In a nutshell ....the interview for me is very helpful,I am painting for last 3years now, never been to any art school(I am a doctor) so thanks a lot for sharing knowledge ,god bless you & may Virgil live for another 100 years to fulfil his dreams.
Andrew, i have deliberately not watched this interview as I am relatively new to oil painting. I felt if I would have watched this earlier on in my journey, I would not have been able to grab the intellect you both dissect. It seems as though the further I go down this rabbit hole, true to Socrates, I really have no idea what I'm doing. I thought I knew when I excitedly hit different and new exciting plateaus. As I learn, i realize I'm only scratching the surface of the tip of the iceberg. How amazing... I am also a lifelong musician semi retired and have found visual art relevant to the audio art we couldn't imagine life without. I love virtual Elliott's early 70's Black Les Paul Custom by the way. I've spoken with Virgil about it online. I respect his playing as much as talent and knowledge as an artist. He is so much more to me than this. I'm on his facebook page and absolutely adore the knowledge I receive as a member. Thank you Andrew. You knocked it out of the ballpark.
Enjoying this episode again for the fifth time! (At least) I can watch this interview over and over again. In 40 years time some young "whipper-snapper" will be interviewing Andrew and the viewers will be as privileged as we are now for this great candid 2 hours of insight into the workings of Virgil's mind.
I was totally thrilled today to find that I actually have Virgil Elliott's book - bought at random from a failing art store a while ago! I love this video, and send many, many thanks to Virgil Elliott for the interview, which was fascinating, and the book, which is wonderful, and to Andrew Tischler for this and his other interviews, which are amazing!
Thank you for putting this out here, positive input for struggling artist, the courage to continue painting paintings that me and others feel good about what they see, something that the majority of folks have in common living everyday life. Living paintings like living songs are popular for eternity.
Thanks Very Much for this interview. Great, Great content. I think what I liked most about it was that it seemed as if you were learning as much from Virgil as I was. And I learned a ton. Can't wait to get the book...on order now. Thanks again.
Man I loved this interview. It was so inspiring and relieving to see and hear someone with viewpoints so akin to my own. He said everything i feel doesn't get said about the art world because he doesn't have to pander to the so called "social and intellectual elite." New personal hero!!
What a great interview full of a well of information! Thanks so much for taking the time to put this interview together. From using led white to no or little medium, I was surprised what I found out. Glad to learn that liquid is ok but not too much and linseed oil as well. I paint in layers so this was an eye opening. I just varnish some paintings after about a year and I use damar varnish. The way I did it is pour a few drops on to the painting and extended with surgical gloves to prevent brush marks. I was cautious checking all angles to make sure I didn’t miss any part of the painting. This was also a great way to know about varnishing to clean it up with water then with gamsol. So much great advice! My only downside is I just bought a couple of tubes of titanium white and I’m not sure if I want to use it. You are absolutely awesome! Thanks so much again! Great job!
Amazing podcast! Thank you Andrew and Virgil! I've learned so many things while listening to this conversation. You are totaly right about modern absract impressionism. Another thanks for suggesting us how to succeed with art. I hope you'll post a new video soon.
Yes watched the whole pod cast and thank you very much for yet again bringing great knowledge for all of us, there is so much to learn, always appreciate and elders view, being one myself, always willing to learn and Thank You!
Great interview. for some years after college I regretted not studying painting, because it is my passion. But now I have an enjoyable full time job and can spend all my free time painting, without stress about money. I'm sure I'm progressing slower than I would be if I was able to paint full time, but I have got the time to learn.
Thank you Andrew. Ive been checking your videos from time to time and now I look forward to these conversations. Enlightening reality for art painters to the point of depression. All the same it makes no sense to bury our heads in the sand. My own artistic vision is being opened up and I'm getting support from for what I truly believe painting to be. Bless you both! Thank you for sharing Mr. Elliott. Im in the Caribbean .
I know this is an older interview Andrew, but it was INCREDIBLE! And the best part was watching you “geek out” over his comments throughout the discussion!
So much amazing information! I'm flabbergasted! Thank you Andrew and Virgill for sharing so much knowledge. I'll be ordering many of the books mentioned and referring back to this video in future for sure!
What a wealth of information. I want so much to improve my skill as an oil painter. Wow! Will have to watch this again and again. Little by little as I can afford I continue to upgrade my materials and this video imparted so much to me. Thanks, Andrew for this amazing video.
Thank you both deeply for your integrity and perseverance. My mother studied at California College of arts and crafts when Diego Rivera did his murals there,in the 40s. All I ever wanted to do was be a classical artist. She knew the traditional ways of painting and stressed learning to draw....my best teacher. 1960s were nuclear burn for artist soul... Pain makes man think. Confucius
Thank you Virgil and Andrew for this very interesting and informative interview. I’ll look forward to future episodes with him and sure will acquire his book if I can find one. Would love to get the revised version in the future.
Andrew, thank you so much for bringing this video to us. It is so encouraging to see people like you, Virgil, Cesar and other modern day masters helping to make the movement back to true traditional academic painting and sculpture. This video is loaded with great information. I bought Virgil Elliott's Traditional Oil Painting book about 10 - 15 years ago and it is a resource that I often refer to for information and inspiration. Thank you both for sharing your honest thoughts and insightful technical information, not only with regards to painting techniques and materials, but also how best to preserve the artwork. Anxiously awaiting your next video.
Great interview! After dabbling in acrylics and watercolour these past three years I’m ready to jump into oils. I’ve just ordered Virgil’s book online.
Hi Andrew I son'r know if you will get the notification for this comment because this video is several months old but I am a new subscriber and have seen a few of your episodes in this series and love them all. I am a relatively newcomer to the art world almost 4yrs now and entered it not knowing how to draw at all, stick people were literally my skill level. I did take a little break for a while when my husband passed away but have come back to art with the realisation that I need to draw and paint. I am learning watercolours and sometimes dabble in acrylics and have been totally learning from wonderful artists on UA-cam. Following your channel has most definitely sparked an interest in oil painting within me and will definitely be giving it a go in the near future, hopefully it will make blending skintones much easier than acrylics. Anyway this video in particular was absolutely fantastic so much so as I have saved it, it's worth a rewatch later on and I look forward to another podcast with Virgil.
An interesting couple of hours. Not only what was said but watching you learn and wonder how all your past work will hold up. Watching the wheels turn as you listened.
So much to learn from this interview . Thank you so much for asking the right questions every single time and Sir Virgil Elliot was so giving and open with his answers . Would you please explain that last bit about glazing though..I didn't quite catch tat .
Andrew, what an awesome interview, so much knowledge, I really admire that. Thank you for your Podcasts and your videos that will help to inspire and mold new artist like me. I listened to this twice, and is still amazed at the years of experience and expertise he has. Thank you Mr. Elliott for sharing with us, and by the way, Elliott is a very common name where I'm from in Jamaica lol. Love, love, love him. Thanks again Andrew, maybe you want to visit Miami sometime.... God bless.
Brilliant interview! How refreshing to hear such good advice from someone so knowledgeable. I've come across people talking at length about pigments and point contents and always thought them to be rather nerdy. More fool me! After hearing Virgil i get it now. Just needed to hear it from someone that could make it so credible. Off to join his Facebook page. Thanks for this series an opportunity! Keep up the good work 😀
This is exactly what I was talking about when I commented on your video with Cesar Santos. The rise of modern art created a "mixed media" effect between the physical artwork and its accompanying literary element. For better or worse...I'll leave to the viewer, however, I feel that the term "art" includes a level of craftsmanship that modern art too often omitted under the guise of "spontaneity" and "expression." +Andrew Tischler, thanks for interviewing Mr. Elliott. He's a wealth of knowledge.
Thank you for documenting this man's wisdom for generations to come, and for bringing awareness to other traditional artists of experts and existing resources!
Hooray for the next century, bring on the realism. Thanks Andrew for doing this interview.
Yes mates Bring It On !!
Finally, someone expressing my views on modern art! I never did "get" it.
are you familar with the with the website Artrenewal.com ? They have a living artist section. realistic art only
I was one of the founding members of the Art Renewal Center, 21 years ago, and I still serve as technical advisor there.
Me also.
It's BS, a con job.
Absolutely right. What chills me about conceptual art is it negates nature and puts my conception as highest power. No humility. Doesn’t work.
Great interview. Sometimes the best interviewer is one who knows when to let the interviewee talk. Great stuff!
It would be great to see two or three more conversations with Mr. Elliott, but if not I'm glad to have seen even this one. It's great to see someone bursting at the seams with knowledge to share, especially for those of us who receive most of our art training from youtube and other online sources.
Thanks to you both!
"No one hires an abstract artist to do a portrait" - Amen!
Carl Olson TV Well, there’re some who still hire them, but just because they can’t recognize between a crap and real art
What a treat! This intensely immersive conversation for free? So generous, THANK YOU!!!!
As a great admirer of both Tischler and Elliott , it is such a pleasure to witness this conversation. Thank you Andrew Tischler for arranging it
I could listen to him all day long. Didn’t think I would learn from a conversation but I did.
Wow! I initially thought, "a 2 hour video?" I thought it might be overlong, but how wrong was I?Riveting? Yes. Informative? Definitely! Thought provoking? Most certainly! There's so much expert advise for oil painters on this video. I really enjoyed from start to end. Thank you!
This is helpful with so much insight into traditional art. Thank you so much 😊
I think a follow up podcast or 2 with Virgil Elliot would be awesome. I have watched/listened to this one like 4 times now haha
Thanks to both of you! I ordered Virgil's book from Ebay and read it in just a few days! Loved it and plan to reread it and write myself notes in the margins. A wonderful interview, Virgil is a real renaissance man. Andrew is right behind him.

Andrew, your interview technique is coming along great. Pose an open-ended question and let the guest talk. Thanks, I’m learning a lot.
DUDES...!!! on modern art... THANK YOU
Excellent discussion Andrew! I especially liked the part about applying varnish.
What an interview! Thank you Andrew, I am a big fan of Virgil. I am learning so much from his 'Traditional oil Painting' book.
Just discovered this guy and i love what he says, just love it. Thanks for this great interview and the links Andrew.

Sir Virgil Elliot had put aside the entirety of his day for this interview, I would have squeezed as much knowledge as I could in your place.
Thank you Sandra!
I know this is an older interview Andrew, but it was INCREDIBLE! And the best part was watching you “geek out” over his comments throughout the discussion!
That was video jam packed with information! Thank you to the both of you.
Joined Virgil's Facebook group. I have already learned helpful info the first few posts that I read. Thanks for this video convo.
So much amazing information! I'm flabbergasted! Thank you Andrew and Virgill for sharing so much knowledge. I'll be ordering many of the books mentioned and referring back to this video in future for sure!
So much knowledge to share. I am going to go back to listen again some time soon. Thanks for posting this video.
What a wealth of information. I want so much to improve my skill as an oil painter. Wow! Will have to watch this again and again. Little by little as I can afford I continue to upgrade my materials and this video imparted so much to me. Thanks, Andrew for this amazing video.
What an amazing conversation. I didn't want it to end!
Ok! Listening to this excellent interview has convinced me to get Mr Elliott's book! Every minute of this video is worth watching.
Andrew! Virgil! Thanks for expressing what I have felt for over a half century!

Thank you Virgil and Andrew for this very interesting and informative interview. I’ll look forward to future episodes with him and sure will acquire his book if I can find one. Would love to get the revised version in the future.
I loved this conversation. I keep coming back and watch it again and again. it's like my best movie of art 😍
Thank you Andrew for sharing us this very informative interview with Mr Elliott.
Thanks os much! Glad you enjoyed it. More on the way!
Wonderful episode, thank you both! I learned so much and while I was watching, ordered his book from the publisher and joined his Facebook group.
What an interesting conversation to be able to eavesdrop on! Thank you for these videos...more please!
Great interview! After dabbling in acrylics and watercolour these past three years I’m ready to jump into oils. I’ve just ordered Virgil’s book online.
The great Virgil Elliot!!! Thanks for the interview!!! Totally agree with the master!! I love his book soo soo soo much!!!!!
This video was one of the most informative of any I've seen. I would love to see more interviews with Virgil!!!
Virgil is so kind and helpful! Thanks, to both of you!
Such an interesting interview. So much information, I’ll be watching this again and again. I’ll also try o get Virgil’s book. Thanks so much Andrew.

I love the interviews such a joy for my ears. So much information for somebody who is not the artist.
Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge and expertise! I didn’t know about Titanium White! Thank you
An interesting couple of hours. Not only what was said but watching you learn and wonder how all your past work will hold up. Watching the wheels turn as you listened.
Bring Virgil Elliott back again. He is very generous. Thank you guys for this.
Poor Andrew, You can see at 53:33 he is READY to wrap it up with Elliott. Thankfully you pushed through for us! The information is good as gold!
This is a great interview and really insightful content. More please
What a refreshing change to hear something I've always believed. What a great guy
Well that was two hours that went by fast! Thanks to the both of you for sharing
Being a relative beginner, podcasts like this are SO helpful to avoid mistakes ...THANKS!!!
Wow! That was inspiring! I wonder if there is anyone who is as knowledgeable and experienced as Mr Elliott but in the field of watercolors!
Keep up the good work 😀
Thanks M Thread! I appreciate the comment!
So very intersting! Thank you, Andrew, for this valuable information! I'm grateful to both of you!
Thank you!
Very very helpful. My sincere thanks to both of you
Annndddyyyyy! I'm getting extra cozy to listen to this. Thank you!
Fabulous I am so inspire by this interview Andrew. Well done. So much new info to take in. Thanks. Roger.
Thanks so much Roger, I really appreciate the comment mate! Hi to the family! :)
Thank you Mr. Elliot, and Andrew, for talking about this. My sentiments exactly too!
Thank you so much for this interview!!!!
