I never intended to watch the whole thing as two hours is a pretty significant commitment with all the demands for our time these days but once your dad started telling his story I was completely captivated. What an interesting and inspiring man. So much wisdom and so much heart. Thanks for sharing him with us. It was two hours very well spent. Now I have to go paint that crab again.

Okay, Andrew, we now all know where you get your CAPTIVATING personality!!! Your dad is AWESOME! In all the interesting, wise, motivational things your dad had to say, I couldn't get over the look of love and admiration on your face for this uber-talented artist, your father. I LOVE your podcasts and what an honor for both father and son to be part of each other's extraordinary lives and careers. God bless you and your family always. Keep these podcasts!!!

Thanks so much Angela. Yeah, I'm pretty proud of the guy. He's achieved so much but he's made this life possible for me by showing me his example. I will continue to try to help others in the same spirit of what he's done for me.

As a zoologist who eventually became a filmmaker and artist, I can so easily relate to your Dad's experience in terms of finding a market. Opportunity, talent, skill, determination and a little good luck seem to be involved across the board ... sculpture, film making and art. I thoroughly enjoyed this two-way chat between two artistically gifted men. And yes, remembering someone's name, whether after a few days or several years can have a huge impact and says so much about you and your relationship with the world at large. A great experience from both of you. Thank you so much.

Smart dad, smart son. Impressive the way Mr. Tischler approached potential clients to end up with 150 zoos under his belt and so true, " If you have to hold your own feet to fire, perhaps it's not your calling. "

I have heard the same basic info a million times before about building a business model, pricing, etc. But I could hug your dad for actually explaining it in a way that doesn't sound dirty or scheming or greedy. I appreciate his inclusion and emphasis on providing the best product he is able to at the time to meet the customer's need. So often that is missing in the business discussion. Absolutely brilliant and I am forever grateful to you for inviting your father to share his sage wisdom with us! On a side note, I recognize some of your facial expressions in this video. Mostly because I make very similar expressions when my parents interact with my friends, especially when there is a story involved. ;)

Hat's off to Mr. Tischler, what an amazing and inspiring life! Finally a podcast with a seasoned artist who really shows you how a full life can be lived to bring you wonderful art. Thank you Andrew, please continue on this trend, it's so inspiring! If only I would have been able to listen to this when I was in secondary school my life as an artist would have been so different. Never to late, I hear you say, but it kind of is. I love Mr. Tom Tischler, absolute class gentleman! Thank you for sharing!

Yeah like Ed Tucker...2 hours is a long time but I started the pod cast as I was painting in my studio thinking that I would end up turning it off or skipping through to get some snippets that I was interested in. But I found that I just had to keep listening to your Dad...very interesting person. I had to laugh a few times about some of his comments that rang true to me also ...and also at the relationship between father and son. Great stuff Andrew...made for a very enjoyable painting session.

I love your Dad. I have learned a lifetime of actionable art marketing in two hours and 21 minutes. I so admire how he did not remain stationary, but instead kept moving forward, taking action in deploying his creativity in whatever was at hand - your mother as well. I appreciate this podcast/video so very much, for many reasons. Ideas, memories and insight was set aflame while watching and I am so thankful you and your Dad are so kind to share on this level. I am immensely grateful he chose the road less taken, as Robert Frost wrote, and "that made all the difference". Thank you!

Excellent interview, Andrew. Being an artist also from Austin I recognize your Dad's attitude and determination (and accent). This was a very different place in the late 60's and he did well getting away and forging a new life. That said, in reference to his crab comment at the end I'll also add something I heard years ago, 'Great art is never finished, it's merely abandoned.' Thanks again for your insightful videos.

This was enlightening! Ty to your Dad and ty! He said something incredibly important about passion and being obsessed and compulsive. I’m a beginner painter but for years my passion was knitting! Once I started to paint I kept saying I have to get back to my knitting and a year later I still haven’t and it worried me until I heard your father’s words! I am obsessed with painting, I love it so much! Thank you to your Dad for releasing me from the conflict between knitting and painting!

What a treasure for you and for us to listen to someone who has been there. Good advice at the end. Now I know why you prep for your paintings over and over again. Doing the grunt work leads to a better reward at the end. That will preach!

Andrew, you are a Knight in shinning armor to me! Not in the romantic sense, but as a fellow artist!
This episode was SO great, that I had to watch it AGAIN and AGAIN [as Tom advises]- my third time today, while I practiced my drawings. This was incredibly insightful, full of wisdom and exactly what I needed to hear- the truth of the real work it takes to be an acclaimed artist. Wow! I especially love the stories your dad shared about his journey through Europe. I love his moral ethics, too...referring to the “Uncle you may know”.
Moreover, I can not thank you enough for your perseverance to bring these podcasts to your fellow artists; it is invaluable, priceless education that brings our global community together.
Please tell your dad Thank You, too. As hard as it may be for him to understand UA-cam and the tech world, there’s a massive need for his wisdom.
My father, Dudley Kendall, before he went blind, was an accomplished painter and very much like Tom- near the wilderness and likes to live simply. My brother, Rex Covington, is also a sculptor, though with ice [www.LAiceart.com] in CA. They are both old schoolers and I can certainly relate very well to how you grew up with an artistic family- it’s a never ending venture to keep growing and learning, ‘being prepared to do it again and again’. Bravo, Sir!

Its wonderful you still have your father around. My father was an absolutely amazing artist, there's been so many times I wish he was still here, so I can just say... "Hey Daddy, how do you do this?" That's my only regret about my artwork.... I waited too late to come back around to it, by the time I did, I was losing my father. Cherish those moments as long as you can.

It always helps me as a 'new' oil painter when I've approached something a particular way, and then it gets reinforced after the thought by someone with years of experience and success.
I found after I THINK my paintings are complete, I wanna change "this" or change "that" and "oh, I couldve done it this way" after watching one of your videos.
Then it gets to a point that I want to do it completely over from scratch but feel then Im regurgitating more of the same. Thank your father for me please.... as I now know, thats what some of the best have done and its ok for me to do this and trust my own instincts.
THANK YOU SO MUCH for this video!

Thanks for doing these podcasts Andrew, you've opened up the art universe and are showing us the most interesting inhabitants!! Lots to think about and try, so fascinating..... plus informative. Sometimes you say things that I've experienced such as seeing something so beautiful it must be painted for the experience of touching all the nuances of it (or words to that effect) so thanks, yup, my kind of people.... wonderful podcasts and blogs, so appreciated!!

I have one of your father’s sculptures. 2/50. It’s a ram on a cliff. It caught my eye today because I don’t see it often (it was at my dad’s). I noticed it said “Billy” Tom Tischler on it and my heart stopped because I’m greatly inspired by Andrew. I’m a paint and sip “instructor” and I paint oils mainly at home with a great deal of help from Andrew’s videos. So, thank you and your family for being a part of my life and bringing me and my family so much art and inspiration. Also, now it’s at my house haha

Great interview! It's amazing how the things we encounter shape what we do in our lives. Andrew's Dad first used art as an expression as a youngster, then was exposed to animals through his father's veterinary profession - then architecture in college, selling art while traveling and then finally in Africa, sculpture. What a fantastic life story. Mind blowing and totally inspirational! Andrew was exposed to incredible parents. It's no wonder he is the amazingly, talented artist he is. It's in his DNA.

Your dad's awesome :) I can see what he's saying in my life too. I think it's the way of the creative mind. We take things we learn/observe (either related to art or not) and we transfer the essence onto art (or whatever we're working on). I think the more we learn/read/experience the more we carry into our art and our ability to do this is what we call talent. The rest is practice.

kept thinking...I can’t wait to read this guy’s biography...what an incredible life...Imagine to have all those works of incredible art, punctuated with a son as gifted and high functioning as you! Sheesh.
On the gallery issue, over the years I have dealt with a few galleries as a patron. I love galleries as you can see exactly what you are purchasing and it is always better than online. I must say, the last gallery I dealt with, I loved, I purchased 5 wonderful works over the years from them but, BUT...they never once remembered my name.
After thinking about that after my final purchase, I felt somehow...hanging, if you know what I mean.
Andrew Tischler, you should create a gallery, you know how people like to be treated...just like a person.
Thanks again, love the Kelly Foss Creative Endeavour as well!

Just wanted to tell you thanks for doing what you do. I have watched a number of your tutorials and have learned so much in a short time. But this one here with your dad spoke to me. Thank him for sharing his story. I loved it and it spoke to me. Its not easy to see destiny when its front of you but in retrospect his life looks like it was destiny. But that would erase all of the hard work, the gutsiness of walking into a store to sell his art, or the shear balls of going to the museum in Switzerland and demanding a job. Carpe Diem...seize the day...make your own destiny is my take away. I'm sure Ill comment more and some day share my art with you. Today I just want you both to know that at least one person in the world is thankful that you exist and is praying for you future. God bless.

As a beginning artist listening to your Dad talk about doing your art over again and again made me realize that I quit too soon and allow myself to be discouraged too easily. I plan on writing that in large letters on the wall of my little studio. Thank you Andrew for sharing your Dad with us.

This was a great interview with your dad! He had some wonderful insights and wisdom that he imparted that I took personally and I'm sure to a lot of the young artists out there trying to make a living with their art. Old school but successful school!

Dear Mr. Tischler, (Tom) Referring to the out dated website...(From one Texas artist to another) "If it ain't BROKE don't fix it!" I refuse to use social media to sell my work, even though many tell me I should. I prefer face to face contact with people. My first sale was a private showing in a tiny museum in our small town, I was invited to a proverbial wine tasting by the museum to show my work. A woman didn't have cash that night, so she came to where I lived and paid cash for it the next day. I will never forget her name. Thank you for sharing your expertise, it is very nice of you sharing with us. God bless you and keep you safe.

This was my second time watching this episode, and I just realized my husband and I have seen probably a dozen of your dad’s sculptures in person (one of which my husband has fond memories of climbing on as a child: the Komodo Dragon). Amazing wisdom and a truly fascinating story and life. Thank you for producing the podcast and videos on your channel; they’re always refreshing and inspiring. I often tune in while working in my studio and I never come away without practical, manageable applications. - Lauren

Interesting to listen to Tom and his story Andrew. I can see how you had the confidence to try to make a living as an artist with an example like your father. He's an inspiring man who shows that it is possible to succeed at this game. Thanks.

That was great! I really enjoyed seeing and hearing the interaction and conversation between you and your Dad! He certainly has gained the wisdom of experience, not to mention the talent and skill through many years of practice and hard work. I see that you have gained much and learned much from him. What a blessing that is!

The further along I go in this, the more I see the connections between my art and all the non-art circumstances and situations, sometimes extremely frustrating and discouraging, but necessary and beneficial. It all fits together. Much I've learned outside of my art applies TO my art.

Since I only discovered your videos a few days ago, I have been thoroughly enjoying them now that I am retired and hoping to delve back into my art that was shelved for the 40 years I worked at a local hospital. I had to pause your episode to investigate further your father's mention of the cave paintings from 36,000 years ago. I found a great video entitled "La Cueva de los Sueños Olvidados Hd / Sub Español -Werner Herzog" here on UA-cam (it is in English and I hope you don't mind me mentioning it). Now that I have been enthralled by that, I am returning to finish your interview! Thank you so much for sparking my creativity as I return to drawing and painting once more.
