  • Did you know that Head Start, one of the most popular and effective War on Poverty programs, is celebrating its 50th Anniversary this year? In her very personal and heart-felt talk, U.S. Rep. Loretta Sanchez, (CA-46), who currently serves as a senior member of the U.S. House Armed Services Committee and U.S. Homeland Security Committee, discusses how her Mexican-American mother helped pave her path to the U.S. Congress by enrolling her in the first Head Start class in her community in 1965.
Congresswoman Loretta Sanchez is proud to represent California's 46th Congressional District. Rep. Sanchez began her congressional career in January of 1997 and is currently serving her tenth term in the U.S. House of Representatives. She holds senior positions on the House Armed Services Committee and the House Homeland Security Committee. She is a member of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus and serves as the co-chair of the Immigration Task Force. As the second highest ranking Democrat on the House Armed Services Committee (HASC), Rep. Sanchez is a recognized leader on military and national security issues. She is also a member of the Subcommittee on Strategic Forces. A product of public schools and Head Start, Sanchez is a graduate of Chapman University and American University's MBA program. Prior to serving in Congress, Sanchez worked in the financial markets, with firms including Booz Allen Hamilton and Fieldman Rolapp.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

I am a Head Start teacher in a very high behavior classroom. Everyday is a challenge with 17 children. I began to feel burned out just trying to help my second family. After awhile I began to think what's the point I don't feel I am making an impact in their lives. Then I watched this then I remember why I became a Head Start teacher. Thank you for this friendly reminder that I am appreciated and that my children need me beyond anything.

Thank you for your work! I taught kindergarten for years and I think 17 is way to high a number of a head start classroom. I wish they would have a lower cap so you and others could be even more effective and not feel burned out!

Regardless of how much fun it was for you forty-five years and $166 billion later, it has been proven a failure.

Thank you for all you do. My son is in Head start due to mild autism w/ speech delay. Just 1 week he is speaking several words. I'm grateful for this program because it is an addition to our parenting.

She was very informative, about the head start program. Just shows you what an early start can do for all children.

Wow simply wow thank you for this information very moving. I can’t wait to begin my journey in being a educator in the early childhood program! Headstart will be my practicum place and I’ll be doing it virtually but it’s still an amazing opportunity to be able to be apart of such a great organization!

Great video. I am a product of head start and proud. My mother was a college student, my father was a postal worker and was in the military. Not sure what the math expert is talking about, but clearly he/she has never spent five minutes in a head start facility. If kids have a head start and become first generation college graduates and do better than their parents, that makes for a better society---why say it is a waste of money and continue the cycle of poverty. Only those who care- get it.

How about advocating for the teachers who get pay a joke of a salary? The challenges we face do not much the pay. We love the children but we also have bills to pay. When Walt-mart offers more to their cashiers than Head Star to qualify teachers, that is a sad situation.

Hello, I have a question about the head start program. Do you have to be in poverty for this program? I am also mexican/american, however I was born here in the US, and trying to get my daughter a head start, she is very smart, she can follow along saying the ABCs, and can count 1-10 in Spanish and English, I am not too concerned with her development as she is progressing well, but I want to keep her mind busy, at times she makes it seem like she is not challenged enough, is head start the right program for us?

@@Almamater8888 You obviously lack reading comprehension. If she was poverty stricken, she wouldn't be asking this question. She clearly is NOT at poverty level, and so she is asking if they could still use the service.

I worked in Headstart quite a few years ago, and the program was careful not to restrict itself solely to low income children and become yet another segregated place. A certain number of students needed to be over income in order to prevent that problem. Good luck!

This is 5 years old so I don’t know if you’ll see this, but I want to say, don’t push your daughter too hard, alright? She seems skilled. Since she is skilled, let her be skilled and let her rest after being skilled. It’s not healthy to always have her work and work and work and work. Even geniuses need to rest their minds, let alone a little girl who’s just trying her hardest. This isn’t to say to not push your child. Just, be considerate. Do push her to climb the mountain. Don’t push her over the cliff.

I received a BS in Social Work in 2012 and my first job out of college was a family advocate position with Headstart. After about 2 months,it was torture going to work everyday, the reality of what I wanted to do versus the reality of the program. Not sure if it varies state to state, but our Head Start had no academic learning in the curriculum, the children are only taught social skills..how to stand in a line, how to sit in a circle, etc. No ABCs, no 123s, nothing to help them when they arrive to Kindergarten. Every May, they all failed the Kindergarten screening at the school district, and the parents would THEN ask "What did my kid lern here?" while they balled and felt like failures of parents. It's a program that only exist to streamline families through social services. They register for head start and are signed up for multiple welfare programs on top of that. and half of these kids are products of lazy, unmotivated parents that make, and continue to make, poor choices, including having 3-4 children while receiving 5-8 diferent social benefits and not working. Mind you, these parents all seemed to have money for brand new cars, sometimes 2 brand new cars per/family, new tattoo sleeves, brag about their Disney and Jamaican vacations, etc. This program is a sad waste today. This is coming from a social worker who personally pulled her wallet out and gave some of these families cash when they blew through their food stamps early in the month. 2 years of Head Start is not going to undue the next 15 years of dysfunction and poverty that their parents raise them in. Sorry to say!

Sorry to say it's the same in Alaska. I don't even think children in preschool should be directly learning ABC's and 123's, they need to be PLAYING. Processing their world. I completely agree with the statement of parenting and I don't see the value in Head start except as government run daycare mascarading as "early learning".

Early Head Start is 0-3 years old. Basically teaches parents to be their child’s first teacher. Regular head start is 3-5. It helps with child’s development and then being ready for kindergarden

I looked up who is American Rennaissance. They describe themselves as "race realists". This does not make them look like a good authority, as the term "race realist" is common among neo nazis and that sort of ilk.

What should someone do when they know of a person who registered their child for the Head Start program and was accepted into the program under an application that was fraudulently completed and submitted to The Head Start of the Legigh Velley?
This person was dishonest about their income and other details, let alone their family support system, and now a child who really is living in a poverty situation is unable to be accepted into Head Start.
