- Though not many of us know it, a whole lot hinges on our first 1 000 days. This time period is crucial as it affects areas such as physical growth, peer skills as well as emotional and social development.
DeeDee Yates is a recognised world expert focusing on vulnerable children and families
including those affected by HIV and AIDS. Starting in 1985, her passion for children
brought her into the field of early childhood development.
Her career started as the early childhood development coordinator for the Anglican
Church in Namibia, supporting their twenty-five kindergartens in rural areas of northcentral
Namibia as well as in Katutura.
She also helped establish the Children’s
Desk at the Council of Churches and acted as the coordinator from 1990 to 1996. After working for the Ford Foundation in Namibia, she became a full time
consultant.
She has done several studies on the quality of programmes for children in
Namibia, South Africa, Tanzania, Malawi, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Ethiopia, Uganda,
Kenya, and Rwanda, and has several publications. She also has served to the Government of Namibia for several years as a Technical Advisor in Early Childhood Development.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx
These practices are why I am an early childhood educator. Relationships which are consistent and loving.
Trust, understanding, early investments and connections. I wish I had received this early on.
Everyone who is expecting a child should watch this. I have so many regrets about my children’s early years. They were not abused, but I can see now how the way my wife and I dealt with them when they were very young affected their development. They have lowered self confidence, are not as motivated to excel, and have no direction / know what they want to do in life. My biggest goals now revolve around undoing our poor parenting, and building their confidence and mental capacity to be well-adjusted adults. Hopefully I’ll live long enough to see those goals succeed. A good video to accompany this would be education on HOW to be a good parent and how to deal with the stress of those early years.
Its remarkable your level of self reflection and recognition. I have literally never seen anyone own up to something like this comment. Your kids have great things coming their way
And I have a 7 month old. The amount of effort it took from me and us is remarkable so go easy on yourself ❤
Amen: nutrition and modeling for young families. A youngster from our church had a baby at 16. She needs support, nutrition, guidance, etc.
She told the men to love the mother of their children! 😍🤗 I'm so glad I came across this because this is Exactly my life/ parenting.
Golden advice. Next to nutritional and physical care this is most important investment you can make to help your child maximize their potential.
Dads - take the time - help raise a happier child.
Mam this is amazing speech,
most of Countries are investing (wasting) in the account of religion and defence.
simply neglecting child nutrition
Really great info for the new parents to take care thier children.
Amazing!! Pure truth!! Bravo!!
That was a great talk. Thank you!
They cant wait to applaud her, so precious💜
Absolutely loved it...and I'll be quoting you in my next 1st 1000 days lecture...Thank you !
All word are so true and are real facts👏👏
This is soooo good!!! 👏👏👏
This is a great way to feel depressed when you know you didn't get the best times in that critical period and there wasn't a damn thing you could do about it. Should you just give up?
mike4ty4 NEVER give up, you are a lways a work in progress... every choice you make as an adult is a brush stroke on the canvas that is your life, DO NOT QUIT regardless of the past circumstance (good or bad) that got you where you are today
(: never give up
Try to have a kid yourself and make up the time you missed out.
Studies have shown that character personalities make some children more resilient, who actually end up beating the odds and succeeding in life despite their poor upbringing! Read Berk EL's Development through the lifespan edition 4,page 10.
Give up if you want to or work towards recreating yourself/ your life. It's your choice to make a difference; it's probably a habit to "just give up".
There's a saying: "the best revenge is success." Good luck! xx
i am practising listening skill and this is a lession which easy to listen. great feeling.
me too.
dee dee yates so good !!!!!!!!!
Hi, Thank you. I learnt important things from Namibia, for my baby and my country.
Those who assert 'men need to do better' best watch this video and pray they model good behavior to their children.
The challenges of not having a supportive environment in the first 1000 days CAN be overcome. See "Lives of Children - George Dennison"
Hello . Please explain how to activate the translation program into Arabic. Because the lecture is in English and the translation is also in English? Thank you so much .
Do you think this video impact the decision of people planning to adopt / foster kids
I would like to read Perry stone manaifest
15:50 I heard that you can't make someone love you, and don't most relationships fail these days?
Zohirul Islam Jewel exactly...... and sadly a lot of this happens when a men love their women and the women doesn't loves him back while they're expecting support from her man.
Good speech, I like it a lot. But the big question is what vaccination is doing to kids brain development in the first 1000 days?
what you do today counts more
Is this the reason why my brother is so much better in all these aspects compared to me? :’) well fuq my toddler years
Really interesting. What about psychopaths -parents and kids? Are they also genetically programmed to respond to human touch?
Domlika Trichkova those are usually people that lacked love, care and connection while they were in those early stages and experienced severe abuse and neglect instead.
@@safanaseva91 And that begs the question? Why were the parents not capable of love, care, and connection? Equality is a myth.
what is mean of this ted
Mirror neurons!
Why is equality a goal?
Better society? Severely malnourished children don't make for a good future
I don't know... some of the most successful entrepreneurs of our time started off with less than a conducive childhood environment =S
Audio Monkey there are always exceptions to the rule. Some people win the genetic lottery. But this advice helps everyone.
Continual insufficient nutritional intake and exposure to violence, for example, is not good for brain development. This is muuuch different than growing up in a neighborhood with low real estate values after dad leaves.
this will help society and not just the individual

Successful doesn't mean happy & healthy... and that is truly more important. Success can never be a substitute for that, it can just be the cherry on top.

I rather not stare at the people in the audience. If I’m at a lecture my full attention is toward the speaker. Maybe TED wants to show the different demographics of the audience. Frankly, It’s a bit distracting looking at others and their stale faces lol
"Do the first 1000 days determine the rest of your life?" Well yes, especially if you are aborted.
i was with her until she tells women not to drink but tells men 'just love your wife' - that is inequality. why is enjoying a glass of wine at the end of the day a bad thing for mothers and not fathers! i didn't agree with this preaching
Becky A same.... moreover she just expecting a support while a men has the same role as a women to raise their children
Because all alcohol consumption during pregnancy risks fetal alcohol syndrome. That's why.
You definitely missed the point....
I don't know who she is talking to.
And I don't believe her credentials match what she's asserting.
The video begins with a self-contradiction. It states that the aim is a more "equal society," then pictures someone winning a race. Do we want all races to end in a TIE? If equality is the goal, why feature someone winning over others? But first, why is equality a goal? We can be "equally" mediocre. And if "equality" is the goal, it's more easily obtained by reducing everyone to the same level. No, equality is not a worthy goal.
Really great info for the new parents to take care thier children.
