All the people commenting that her singing is flawed or imperfect. You realize she not just singing. She is acting. She is performing the song from the perspective of someone who has been utterly destroyed by life. She is near death. And her voice captures this feeling perfectly. If she sang it to sound perfect that would not capture the moment. It is the voice of someone singing in utter despair.
    She is perfect.

Ten years later and I still can't hear this version without ugly crying. This moment was my takeaway from the whole film in the theater - even with Les Mis being a favorite read of mine and having seen many college theater productions, Anne brought this song to life in a way I never saw coming. It's just too raw, too in the cut. Amazing film adaptation and personalization.

Saw Les Miz live a couple times and never shed a tear. Saw Anne Hathaway's rendition of this when I watched the movie in the cinema and it destroyed me. I'm talking ugly crying in the middle of the cinema. So powerful.

I love how she can show such suffering in things like this, and then you look at her sweet and innocent character in films like Ella enchanted, princess diaries, etc. To me that is what makes an actor/actress brilliant- their ability to act a role to such measures that you cannot believe they are not the character itself. Well done Anne Hathaway! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

The way Anne sings it is so heartbreaking, emotional, and beautiful like she's LIVING the despair, heartbreak, misery, fear as she sings. In Susan's version, it sounds like she's OVERCOME her despair and she's older, wiser, and happy. Like a bittersweet vibe of the way her version is. But with Annes.. It's like you're living and listening to the despair and emotion as she's LIVING it at the moment. Hopefully people understand what i'm trying to say.

Susan Boyle's version is beautiful, of course. I'm not even gonna argue with that. But Anne Hathaway's version is heartbreaking in a very beautiful way. If you missed the emotions between the lines, you're a fool. This gives me goosebumps and made me cry. Ugh, I can't even.

Erry Anneliese Susan is a talented singer, but Anne is an artist. When we listen to Susan we say, wow, because let's face it, she's neither an attractive or intelligent lady.
But Anne has an odd beauty. Exaggerated eyes & mouth. She could get by on her looks alone, as so many do. But her really good but slightly imperfect singing voice brought us, well me, to tears.
This is a song of lost hope, lost aspirations, loss of a will to live.
Other great singers leave us uplifted when they sing this song, but Anne alone leaves us with a feeling of despair.
Most of us live with some regrets, with lost dreams. Tears are a salve to ease our pain of loss.

for those of you who didn't know - during revolutions and wars, soldiers used to save money they earned as much as possible, and then combined their savings, in order to buy only one book "les miserables". Books at that time used to be extremely expensive and hard to get. Later, whoever was educated enough to read, used to read it aloud for the rest of the soldiers. this book has changed the history of France and even today widely known globally. now think how one man, Victor Hugo, with a power of writing has done something revolutionary. don't think of it as another hollywood movie, in which catwoman played a role - think of it as something great. and whoever didn't read it yet, do so. educate yourself =)

There was a time when men were kind
    When their voices were soft
    And their words inviting
There was a time when love was blind
And the world was a song
    And the song was exciting
    There was a time
    Then it all went wrong
I dreamed a dream in time gone by
    When hope was high
    And life worth living
I dreamed that love would never die
I dreamed that God would be forgiving
Then I was young and unafraid
And dreams were made and used and wasted
There was no ransom to be paid
No song unsung, no wine untasted
But the tigers come at night
With their voices soft as thunder
As they tear your hope apart
As they turn your dream to shame
He slept a summer by my side
He filled my days with endless wonder
He took my childhood in his stride
But he was gone when autumn came
And still I dream he'll come to me
That we will live the years together
But there are dreams that cannot be
And there are storms we cannot weather
I had a dream my life would be
So different from this hell I'm living
So different now from what it seemed
Now life has killed the dream I dreamed

Le Miserables is more than an incredible musical. The story is equally amazing. A hungry and struggling man serves years in prison for stealing a loaf of bread. Hounded by the "warden". Years later, when finally released, and when given the opportunity - he steals again. But this time, a priest shows compassion and gives him the opportunity of a lifetime - to have a new life, free of his past sins. He becomes a good, honest, and decent man, who in turn, shows great compassion for others. Even while being pursued for his former life's sins. Wow! It's so clear to see how a single act of kindness, and forgiveness can have a profound impact on dozens, or hundreds of other people - even for generations to come. Anne Hathaway is brilliant as Fantine, and allows the audience to connect deeply with her struggle.

Well. I've read a lot, and I mean a lot of the comments posted. I've heard Hathaway sing, a little, before. Her voice is sweet and high pitched. I wouldn't call her a 'singer'. She's an actress. In this musical/movie I don't believe the director was looking for a Broadway singer to step in. "Okay, well cut. . . . Bring in Susan Boyle." (Who does the song beautifully) If that is what you think then you missed the rest of the movie. At this moment she was in the pit, she was dying inside, life as she had ever know it was over. Life itself was over. So the song was sung by a totally broken down person, exactly the way anyone in that position would sing it, tears, cracked voice, raw emotion. It IS exactly what the makers of the movie were looking for. It was stunning. She was stunning. I think we could all agree that she can act, but this was amazing, and she deserves whatever award comes her way.

You just can't accept some people do a lot things. Madonna was excellent in Evita and morons can't accept that. It's not her Genre or guild... We feel more comfortable if we keep people in compartments. We forget that some people defy barriers. Instead of being inspired by the excellence that that they project, we rush to argue that it's not natural. She is an actor not a singer. That is moronic. Mariah Carey or Toni Braxton won't come close to the perfection that Anne Delivered for this scene. Oh buy she is no singer. Are you an idiot. Her mother was in Broadway. She has it in her DNA!

There are actors who learn to sing. There are singers who learn to act. But it is rare to find both qualities in one naturally. Anne Hathaway is one of the few. There may be singers who can sing this song better but I doubt any could put the emotions in she did. This is why you win awards. One of my favorite plays.

My younger brother played the role of Gavroche on Broadway and in the travelling company of Les Mis for almost 5 years, to say I'm unfamiliar with the show would not be an understatement but a flat out lie. There are some things I don't like about the movie, but Anne Hathaway's performance of I Dreamed A Dream is not one of them. This is a song I heard sung, live, at least twice a day for years and grew indifferent to. Yet her take on it will leave me in a sobbing mess every single time I hear it .Bravo Anne, bravo..

I love this performance. I also don't give a damn for all those who say Anne Hathaway is an actress, not a singer. She convinced me this song was real, on both counts. Susan Boyle convinced me that God gives vocal majesty to whom He deems worthy, and Susan is eminently worthy, as is Anne. They both fooled the "wiser" world, didn't they?

  • @Zzzk23
    @Zzzk23 7 років тому +16

I chose to sing this for my HS solo choir performance. Everyone thinks I chose it because I like the song and it's one of my best vocally. In reality it was also because it's a venting process for me. Since I was about four years old, I used to dream about being a lead in the town's shows. In our middle school I got one minor role (I was the only one who wanted the part) and another extra role with three lines. In eight grade they canceled the show I was in (finally had a supporting). The only roles I got throughout my high school were characters who only spoke a few lines in one scene. I was told by multiple people that I commanded the scenes I was in better than the leads and that I was the most dedicated. I'm in senior year now and the same show I begged the director to do for years (Addams family) she's doing for the middle school. We're doing a show I hate this year, my final year. So when I perform this, I'll be sure to look right at the director so she gets the message.

    • @chooseyourpoison5105
      @chooseyourpoison5105 7 років тому +8

First of all, let me congratulate you on your dedication, and I'm sure it was a let-down when you really wanted to perform in another musical, but even if you hate the one you were cast in, give it your best shot. I don't imagine that actor Benedict Cumberbatch was too happy about being cast as Titania in A Midsummer Night's Dream in his first Shakespearean role, but he was resolved that if he was going to be cast as queen of the fairies, then he'd be the best damn queen of the fairies they'd ever seen, and now he is one of the most sought after actors in the world. One of supermodel Cindy Crawford's first modelling assignments was modelling a blue satin jumpsuit that she thought was the most hideous piece of clothing ever, but she said that if she had to model a blue satin jumpsuit she was going to rock that jumpsuit like it was haute couture, and she also ended up a great success. On a more blunt note, if you are going to be a professional singer or actor, you will not always have the privilege of appearing in productions that you like. Unless you are an Oscar winner (and not always even then) you are going to have to do roles that you dislike, hate, or downright loathe, to pay the bills. Even if you hate the show you're in, get up on that stage and knock that role out of the park. There's also a saying that God never closes a door without opening a window, so who knows; if you become a successful singer one day you might even get the chance to do the role you so badly wanted, this time in a bigger and better production. Best of luck with your singing career.

Absolutely LOVE the editing you did on this piece. I already love the rendition by Anne, which (in my opinion) shows so much more misery and emotion than the original Broadway pieces, but you elevated this to an entirely new level by including the scenes from the movie in such a fantastic way and even found an artistic way to incorporate the lyrics. Your saturation and switching to monochrome and use of filters is impressive.

How is it not singing? It's not even bad singing. It's really good, it's just that she prioritized portraying the emotions over making the song sound "beautiful" which is what's called for in musical theater/film. There are more "beautiful" versions available, so they prioritized making the movie consistent and and as believable and emotional as possible.

it is beautiful and emotional and what her director wanted from this scene. A movie is much different than a stage production where this song gets belted out to the audience. I think for this version this song was beautifully done, nuanced and full of pain.
