Wait, WHAT? Have you noticed that at some point of the greatest and saddest ending Anne Hathaway tries to hide from the camera? Could you tell us exactly when?
Les Misérables (2012) SYNOPSIS: After 19 years as a prisoner, Jean Valjean (Hugh Jackman) is freed by Javert (Russell Crowe), the officer in charge of the prison workforce. Valjean promptly breaks parole but later uses money from stolen silver to reinvent himself as a mayor and factory owner. Javert vows to bring Valjean back to prison. Eight years later, Valjean becomes the guardian of a child named Cosette after her mother's (Anne Hathaway) death, but Javert's relentless pursuit means that peace will be a long time coming.

Amazing.
Colm Wilkinson played Valjean in the 10th anniversary. Here, he's the bishop. The old Valjean begets the new Valjean, which is a nice touch.
@@mikeor- Wilkinson originated the role of Val Jean.
Especially because the friggin way they framed it, their looks to each other are the thread from that priests kindness all the way to Cossettes life. It breaks my heart every time.
Keep in mind that in this scene, the Bishop is the Personification of God just as Fantine is Valjean's personal angel of death.
You arent human if you don't cry when Valjean says, "A man who only learned to love, when you were in his keeping"
For me, it’s when he says “On this page, I write my last confession.” That line seals the deal.

I’ve never been much of a crier but I cried when Nat and Tony died. It really depends on your preference I was never really into musicals. But I do like this segment
For me its always “Lord in heaven look down on him in mercy” though valjean and fantine were not lovers, theres a pure sacrificial, other-oriented love u know 😢😢😢😢😢😢😢
The theory that marius can hear the ghosts singing because theyre all his friends makes me cry
I have never noticed the look Fantine gives Cosette at 2:00. A mother looking proudly at her daughter she practically gave her life for. This song get's me every time...

All I notice is they kept Fantine's short cropped look because she sold her hair, but her teeth are magically regrown.
They only took out two teeth.

At 2:08 when Marius puts Cosette on his lap I BALL. He loves her so much and she’s hurting so much. He doesn’t know what to do so he just hugs her

I cannot watch this scene without tearing up. There is a universal appeal to this scene, to the whole movie. 2 of the most human emotions are love and the desire for freedom. This movie, from beginning to end, summarizes both love for others and the desire for the desire for freedom.

I completely lost it when Fantine looked at how Cosette grew up and smiled down on her.
"To love another person is to see the face of God."
That line gets me every time. It perfectly sums up what both spirituality and humans' capacities to love each other should be. Victor Hugo was an absolute genius.
French History was the real genius. Hugo just happened to transcribe it into words.

This was always the most emotional scene to me, when all of the characters, living and dead, are depicted at the barricade! Vive le France! 🇫🇷💗

Amazing how many top actors have wonderful voices. Anne Hathaway is the best example. She surprised everyone with her talent for singing.

I cry almost every time I hear this. It's so beautifully bittersweet.
I watch this clip whenever I wanna feel something. there hasn't been a time where I haven't cried to this. always sobbing when fantine and the bishop give those sympathetic look to jv..and always chills when we get that final barricade shot. that final shot feels so universal. oppression is such a universal element of the human condition which is why LM has been able to strike a chord with so many. as long as there are martyrs to pay homage to, the spirit of revolution will never die in vain.
Eddie Redmayne's character Marius can hear the song in the background because a part of him also died during the day his comrades were killed.
When life rips my emotions to threads, I'll use this movie to let it all out and have a good cleansing cry.
Since 2012 I've seen it at least 10-15 times.
I needed this scene today. Valjean's death hits me the hardest. Well done Hugh.

despite the sins jean valjean has commited earlier he has indeed redeemed himself and earned his place in heaven. Just hope one day when i die i get to see my loved ones in the afterlife the ending to les miserable is a great example

I think it works better with it being the Bishop there at the end rather than Eponine; he set Valjean on the right path after all, whilst Valjean barely knows who Eponine is.
You are right, but the harmony on "to salvation" is beautiful, so...
I interpret this as Fantine (not Eponine) being Valjean's personal angel of death and the bishop being the Personification of God.
It brings the story full circle. The Bishop is the one who ‘bought his soul for god’ and urged him to become a better man. It’s fitting that as Valjean ascends to heaven he’s greeted by the man who set him on the path to redemption.
From the second half of the theatre production, my face was wet with tears - when I went to see it, I was glad it was dark in there.
Even listening to this ending right now always always always provokes the tears.
literally went two years without watching this musical and went straight to tears upon seeing this masterpiece of a song again, such great acting. the words "to love another person is to see the face of God" hit me hard

@@connorburnett21 For some reason I don't think she was supposed to be noticed. Had the cameraman dropped his camera just a hair lower I, doubt anyone would have noticed, at all.

I played this on my way to work and cried so much. I imagined my girlfriend losing her dad and didn’t know how to handle myself
I saw this live onstage in London many years ago. When Jean Valjean sang "On this page I write my last confession . . ." you could hear people all over this huge theater start sniffling. I've never forgotten that experience.
I hope this can be the worlds anthem as the powers that be continue to try to force us into this brave new world.

So, at this point in the story am I to understand that the priest (Wilkinson) whom Valjean originally stole the candlesticks from, has already died too? Just like Cosette's mother who has been dead for ab't 18 yrs.
