Another thing you can try is instead of having the parry and drive impact as the right-most two buttons (L1 and L2), set them as the left-most 2 non -direction buttons (square and X). Slide the rest of the buttons to the right, and now you can just play normally but with quicker pointer finger access to parry and DI
I think moving one button from the 4th column to the thumb is just smart. I always felt that the 4th column is less accessible with your weak pinky and i press these buttons less as a result.
I think it's great that the system is not only flexible but that also works really well on a pad, which is how 99% of players will be playing even if almost none of the pros are.
Based on the recent tournament majors, pad was pretty much the dominant hardware with leverless behind it. I think pad will easily be the counter to any leverless nonsense because of price and availability.
Punk plays pad also. Controllers aren’t magically going to make you better. No matter how expensive it is or the amount of buttons it has. I got a Kitsune a few weeks ago; and I love it in SF6, but I also play MK1 and I will NEVER be able to not play on pad in that game. Fucking dedicated block button lol
I did the same thing when I first got to play 6, so we're gonna have to split royalties on the layout patent. the default layout immediately felt backwards to me in regards to those two buttons when I first played, to the point I thought my controller was configured wrong until I realized it was supposed to be like that.
Cool that you came up with new "tech" pre release LOL. Very smart to utilize the input priority system to keep your right hand available for everything. Personally, I'm a sanwa lever/6 button layout boomer so I'll be fine just using my middle finger for MP+MK and ring finger for HP+HK. Been doing the same thing for the universal actions in SF3/4/5 and I'll just boomer it up more lol.
Clever! Definitely doing this. Just got a 400 dollar custom hitbox and seeing the extra button controllers gives me a lot of buyer's remorse. This will do the trick for a while!
I simply moved my punches and kicks over to the right one, and then moved the final column inputs to the front set of buttons. That means drive impact and drive parry are accessible with my pointer finger and thumb
For the longest time I thought some of these innovative controllers were cool, but lately I've been thinking all of these 11 button boxes are getting really ugly
If having more than 8 non-directional buttons that all have unique functions isn’t already illegal then what is capcom even doing I don’t think having a standardized layout is necessary though
I actually stopped playing with my arcade stick and switched to pad (which I hate playing with lol) because I couldn't get comfortable using the last button for parry. Your setup works perfectly! I wish I had watched your video earlier. Thanks a lot.
Yo! Thanks for explaining this, Neph. I was confused as hell when I saw the pic of his layout. Guess it's time to whip out the hole saw and dive into the old box o' buttons.
For the past 10 years we have moved towards what is basically a keyboard-styled controller with a Spacebar button. It is funny considering that 10 years ago FG players said that keyboard is bad and stick is the norm
Yep. We just didn't know due to most keyboards not having sufficient n-key rollover, plus the fact we didn't consider space bar for up. Plus the fact you can't really double tap on keyboard buttons. The 6 or 8 large buttons on the right help with input consistency.
@@Nobody-su9km How are you double tapping keyboard buttons? Do we even have the same definition of double tapping? Using two fingers to quickly tap the same button rapidly.
The JP player controllers reminds me of my Frame1, which has a remappable right thumb cluster for smash. It's very useful to have action buttons spread out among all of your fingers.
I never understood why the flatboxes copyed the right hand button layout verbatim. Even back when i played arcade, I always hated having to slide my hand to hit the 3rd or 4th row (depending on the board) or use my pinky. Imo the action buttons should be alliegned vertically in two rows, so you have the whole width of your hand to hit all the buttons without sliding or wiggling your hand in weird positions.
The nephew tech will rain supreme!!!!!!! Just wait it's only a matter of time before they make everything even by setting a specific layout, because they can't have people be at a disadvantage in a tournament setting, and this definitely gives a big enough advantage to warrant such changes.
My fingers are always glued to L1 & L2 on pad, I feel for the first time pad players have more advantages than stick/hitbox. Feels real fluid for me and precise. I have a battlebeaver controller with mouse click buttons too.
@@CutShadows honestly, I’ve been switching back and forth between ps5 and battlebeaver, came to the conclusion that mouse click dpad isn’t 100% accurate sometimes the input will drag or you’ll forget to take your finger off and it’ll click twice and give the wrong input. After finally breaking in my ps5 controller (building the callus on my finger) I think it’s the perfect pad for fighting games. Sf6 seems to have been made with pad in mind, having a single button for drive impact and parry are ideal. I switched L1 and L2 so I party with L1 and L2 is drive impact. If you’re still keen on split dpad, don’t go for mouse click, split buttons are great, but the clicky buttons are much better for triggers or your other buttons. I use the split dpad especially when playing charge characters. Hope this helped 👌🏻
Okay this video made me realize that I hold my fight stick weird because I always have my pinky over both parry AND drive impact... Does anyone else hold their stick like this? So with the button setup of 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 I press buttons 1, 2, and 3 with my index, middle, and ring fingers. I press 5, 6, and 7 with my thumb (reaching under my palm like I'm doing crossovers on a piano). I press 4 with my pinkie, and I press 8 with the heel of my palm. Kind of like, the meat underneath my lowest pinkie joint. People have said I have really fast parries playing the SF6 demo, and I never considered that most people are moving their hands to access the lower row of buttons. I just play like this naturally and never realized it was odd. You can totally access this tech without any special equipment or button mapping. You just have to be a little weirdo.
I feel like this isn't applicable on a stick since stick buttons are 30mm instead of the usual 24mm You can't really press DI and parry at the same time on a 30mm stick buttons
To be fair, upgrading a stick only costs a few dollars per button. You just add a button and daisy chain it. Doesnt require any PCB mods or anything like that. Just the cost of a new button.
There's no way they ban these controllers, if they did, they'd have to ban pad, and making only 1 layout for leverless would be dumb, because of people like alex myers and ultra david, who play on weird leverless controllers for ergonomic and hand pain reasons.
All of those changes to the button box layout are nice for offline tournaments, but for the game itself, pad is best. In particular, the Flydigi Apex 2 with smart use of reWASD PC software is the way to go. You can disable the up and down d-pad buttons and do them from some of the back buttons instead, giving yourself most of the button box advantages such as precise diagonals, motion input shortcuts, and up + down = up SOCD cleaning. And since it's a pad with a ton of buttons, you can fit all 13 buttons for Modern controls without having to do any combination inputs (6 face buttons, 1 Menu / Start button, and 6 shoulder buttons). You also have two sticks which are useful for the 3D areas. You can do stuff like put L3 run on the edge of the left stick, so you can easily run in 3D areas. Push the stick a small or medium amount to walk or jog. You can use reWASD's shift feature to easily and quickly use all 15 or so of the training mode shortcuts. You hold one button down, and it will change the function of 15 buttons, making it possible. There will be times when you need to switch to Classic to test something, but you can configure reWASD to swap to your Classic profile easily, along with re-enabling the full d-pad if you want it. The Apex 2 + reWASD combo is so good that the idea of playing on PS5 without it is revolting.
I actually already do this by putting parry and drive impact of the left hand side of the fight stick and hitting them with my thumb. I've basically been doing similar stuff to this since Strive came out.
Ok so just use keyboard instead? They are pc controller and u can basically achieve this too by binding the moves to the place u want. Unless capcom wants to ban keyboard too, which is default controller of PC.
Also, everyone has access to these controllers. There are 3000 resources online. You can build a hitbox very easily, even if you do not have a 3d printer, etc.
What ive been thinking is chaning the buttons orders to H L M Parry so that you can have your index and thumb always on both heavy p and k (which will give you DI) and your pinky stays on parry. Should be very easy to move your thumb over to grab too. Ive never had a hitbox tho but I ordered one recently. Ill try it out once I get it.
I moved my DI button above right arrow and DP above LP. And throw button between the right arrow and jump button. If I play classic or modern those buttons will remain the same. For modern all punch buttons become attack buttons and kick buttons become auto, special and super. The reason I moved the 4th column is because my pinky is just way too slow.
To be honest i have similiar set up on my keyboard since beta " movements on wasd - di on space - parry on right ctrl - 6 action buttons on ins del -> page up down buttons - also i can set up x2 punch kicks for specific characters like kimberly's tiger knee air throw on arrow keys D: it's so fast and easy to use those short cuts . As you see i switch to keyboard just because of this , because after socd changes there is no reason to play on another leverless control to me , i believe that will be standart for every game sooner or later so it's better adept earlier.
I've wanted extra thumb keys on my hitbox for years (kind of crazy that there is one button shared by both thumbs when on pad you usually have four buttons your thumb is comfortably responsible for)! I do hope people start selling those sweet looking leverless controllers over here just for the sake of being able to actually use my thumbs when I play games
My issue is I frequently accidentally press the pinky buttons so I unmapped those. I just rely on pressing the combinations. How much did I gimp myself?
I'll definitely be giving this a try. I think at some point i will either mod my hitbox or build a new enclosure for it though, I always like more buttons.
Also, there's the layout daigo uses with the parry button on the left of the left direction button to hit with the pinky. maybe parry with the thumb is easier, idk. Gladly, I use a custom all button controller so I can try out any layout :D
Or you can just press 2 medium buttons for parry. I mean, it's good to have more buttons and I'm working on putting more on my custom leverless but if you can't you will be fine using 2 buttons as defult.
I was originally planning to use two buttons for parry/DI, but this video kind of convinced me otherwise. Given how strict the timing is for perfect parries, you're making it even harder by adding the "requirement" of pushing both buttons on the correct frame. That is to say: even if there is some input leniency on parry input and you don't have to push both buttons on the exact same frame to get a parry command, if you push MP on the latter frame of the perfect parry 2-frame window but the MK is a frame later, you would get a normal parry... instead of the perfect parry that you would have gotten with a 1-button parry command.
Capcom should DEFINITELY not ban custom layouts. I think "number of assignable buttons must equal PS5 controller" is good. Cause I definitely assign commands to R3 in a lot of games as a pad player lol.
Hey Nephew. Thanks for the videos! Where can I get a hitbox like yours? I think you should do a video on it and why you like it over the other hit boxes out there.
I'd say anyone thinking they're going to need all those buttons is behind the times, since having access to 1-button, frame-1 specials and supers means playing Classic is like needlessly hamstringing yourself.
Because that requires you consistently hit both together. If you accidentally press hk or Hp on reaction to a DI you're eating damage. If you accidentally press parry, parrying a di isn't as good as doing di back, but it's still an okay response.
One of the first things I changed cause I have that button mapped to dash in GGST, but I’ll let you claim the tech, mister pro champ of intel tourney, lol. Yea it’s so key to have access to parry and meter build in SF6.
Ironically I've been using the same layout, but I started doing it in Soul Calibur V (which does allow the same button to be bound to different buttons). It was much easier sliding my thumb up then across for Siegfried's iAGA. You can easily just drill a new hole through your top plate to do so, that's what I did years ago.
Switching from arcade stick (sf4 , skipped sf5) to controller pad. Easier to be consistent especially when you visit friends place. still can’t figure out what is the best setting for pads. Standard classic setup makes it tricky, missing out on all 3 P and all 3 K, for certain characters. Currently using triangle + r1 , circle r2 for OD , which may not be consistent. Arcade is a lot easier, but big learning curve. Any recommendations?
Capcom: Let's introduce modern control so people with less buttons like pads can enjoy the game. Pro Gamers: I'm gonna add more buttons to my controller.
This is what i was thinking recently. Gonna see how both feel as i didn't think of nephews layout.

similar to what chris schmidt did in marvel. very clever idea.

Why press parry+DI with your pinky to get DI with input prio when you can just slam your (much more stable) ring finger and press HP+HK anyway?
Because that requires you consistently hit both together.
If you accidentally press hk or Hp on reaction to a DI you're eating damage.
If you accidentally press parry, parrying a di isn't as good as doing di back, but it's still an okay response.
Is mapping DI to the touch pad on the dual sense tournament legal? I recently did this and I'm loving it. Much easier
Im switching from controller to hitbox style, im prepared to get whooped for a liittle
why does ur button config have a weird name
coz i put my nephew there XD
Where did you get such a thin hit box controller? Can you please link me? I have a hit box and it’s so uncomfortable because it’s thick
Capcom: Let's introduce modern control so people with less buttons like pads can enjoy the game.
Pro Gamers: I'm gonna add more buttons to my controller.
Have you ever noticed how much Nephew sounds like Kermit The Frog?
All i want to know is where are these players getting these custom sticks?
Nephew tech is actually amazing
Its basically roman cancel into dash from Guilty Gear
