I love how ominous the Melee challenger screen felt. It was so sudden, and like a mysterious threat was appearing. I kind of miss it and the weird way of unlocking characters to be honest. That game had a lot of unexpected charm to it.

You know what the sound reminds me off? A prison siren. It's almost like the secret character was someone confined and just broke out and is ready to bust out their might on anyone who crosses their path. It's especially ominous if the character was someone like Ganondorf or Mewtwo.

The moment these screens showed up, the anxiety shot up and you could feel those butterflies in your stomach. Always satisfying to get a new character though. Especially Sonic in Brawl when that broke the Internet

I remember as a child playing melee and getting the “challenger approaching” screen with the silhouette of Mewtwo, I was so excited, I wish I could relive those feelings!
I love the melee one, scary sound, the text sloppily overlaps blue square, melee is just oddly perfect.

Honestly... the SSBM and SSBB screens were the most terrifying. When I was, like, 6, I played SSBM at a friend's house. One time I was playing, alone, and then I was Approached by Jigglypuff. I had no idea what was going on. I don't even remember the klaxon ringing, but just the silhouette of Jigglypuff (who I mistaken for Kirby in his clapping animation? I thought something bad had happened to him), the utter alien feeling of the screen, it was just too much. I literally ran away from the game.
Later I got my first Smash Bros game, Brawl. I was... so happy to get it. I never understood the concept of getting new fighters at the time, I just assumed they all came in with the game. When I watched the intro sequence and noticed most of them were missing, I was confused and eventually learned that I couldn't play them. I just shrugged it off and figured I could unlock them later.
But then that siren... that blasted siren... and Ness, just standing there.. menacingly.
Dreams shattered. I didn't play Brawl for years.
Thankfully I learned that all the fighters were unlockable through Subspace Emissary, so that's how I managed to sidestep the Approaching screen. It kind of made it into a cathartic experience, going through the story campaign first and seeing the origin of the Smash world, and then actually getting to play matches.
It's kinda crazy how design aspects can transform a player's experience like that.

I remembered the one time (2-3 years ago) when I was playing a friend's copy of Super Smash Bros Brawl (Wii, not Wii U), a new challenger has approached on screen (Snake). 10 - 30 seconds into the battle, a fan is dropped. I grabbed it and whacked Snake repeatedly for the next 1 - 2 minutes, then killed him with a smash attack. So satisfying!

*_2_* OK, so it sounds like you woke up in an empty lifeless hospital, school, facility, or anywhere indoors that's a big building.
*_3_* You are the only human in there, and the place you are in is unstable condition, and has been damaged all around.
*_4_* You get out of the room, and you see the place is damaged.
*_5_* (Walls are cracked and holed, pipes are broken and loose with air hissing out of them, the floors, walls and ceiling are stained with blood, and there is puddles of water all over the building. 1:05 Plus, the whole building is dark with some lights that emit good light. (It's not dark as in pitch black, no, its like in your bedroom with the light off, but its daytime with your window open, and the light projects into your room). There are sirens that are spinning and projecting red light 1:04 (you know what I'm talking' about). And, you are not alone).
*_6_* In that area (I think its more better to call it a hospital or something. It sounds right and makes sense. Plus, overused scary setting am I right?), there is a creature somewhere in there lurking and walking around.......finding it's next victim.
*_7_* (This is where I talk about the Challenger Approaching sound in Melee now).
*_8_* OK, so the only sounds you hear in the Melee Challenger Approaching is the siren going 1:04 DUN DUN DUN DUN DUN DUN DUN DUN, and also hear some kind of wet footsteps 1:05 sound indicating someone running in a rush or at least very fast. A splashing sound. 1:05
*_9_* So, you hear the alarms and sirens going off, 1:04 that's when you get the urge to start running, because you feel like you hear something coming. Your running footsteps are splashing sounds that go *Splash Splash Splash* ........... *Splash Splash* 1:05
*_10_* Basically that's it, you're in a dark horror game-like area, you try to survive from a creature. Creepy setting. And there are alarms, sirens, and the immediate fast pace of splashing yet running footsteps..................................this comment really made me think of Stranger Things Season 2. Where the awesome clutch fat guy BOB from Tekken ran from the dog demogorgan creature. Then got bodied. LUL

These were such a change of pace if they were unexpected lol. I’d be simply playing a round with my friends and then the siren started going off and I was like, “Ah shit here we go again.” It was even worse when I got my ass beat by a cpu.

64's was instant which made it a bit jumpscare-y, but Melee's managed to make it feel extra serious. Brawl's, 4's, and Ult's just share the same sound and don't really pack the same punch.
Brawl felt a little ominous with the black void and the red spotlight. But the sound kinda lost its charm once smash 4 and ultimate reused it

It’s not Brawl’s fault that Nintendo re-used the same sound for Smash 4 and Ultimate. They were just lazy. Besides, Brawl did it first and was way better compared to Smash 4 and Ultimate if we’re being honest here.
In brawl I get characters from subspace emissary
In Brawl, there are some characters that you only unlock by Classic mode, but not in Subspace Emissary, but yeah, there are some characters that you can only unlock in Subspace Emissary, but not in Classic mode.

@@laxsonic3006 I did not know it was possible to unlock everyone in Subspace Emissary. I remember my brother and I did Subspace Emissary first, and then we did Classic Mode. He also did an event match where it was Link against Shadow Link, and after he won, he got to fight Jigglypuff, and he would unlock him if he beat him, and after beating Boss Endurance on Hard mode with Fox McCloud, he got to fight Wolf, and he would unlock him if he beat him. I thought Jigglypuff was female, and there were some people who thought Jigglypuff was female. Reggie's son did a video revealing the truth that Jigglypuff was male. Reggie does work for Nintendo.

These screens terrified me as a kid once I saw them out of random.
I started the game franchise with Brawl. At the time I didn't have a Wii yet and I didn't have the Gamecube. I went to a friend's house and they showed me Brawl. After playing it, I wanted to have the game. So I got the Wii for my birthday with the game and played it. First time hearing the challenger thing made me get scared for a moment because it was unexpected.

About alot of people forgetting something, I've seen that happening. I have seen it for Megaman, Bugs Bunny Crazy Castle, and Pokémon. Do they not check up on everything to make sure they're accurate? I do understand the Pokémon Gold and Silver Version rival battle, because alot of players do not know about the rival battle right where Lapras is at, and I think you have to not do the rival battle in the Burned Tower, because when I played Crystal Version, I did not go to Olivine City, but went to where Lapras was at, but the rival did not come. I heard that my rival does come to where Lapras was at, and I noticed that when a battle with him at a later place is done, then the early rival battle gets cancelled. I wish the rival battle was never in minor places, but in the main places (like places you need to go through to get through the game).

People say Melee has a terrifying Challenger Approaching screen, but honestly as a kid, I was always terrified of the Brawl Challenger Approaching screen. While yes, Melee's loud ass alarm and ominous screen does still gives me chills, there's just something about Brawl's screen that makes it infinitely more terrifying. The pure black background with the red circle and black silhouette with the alarm which isn't as serious as Melee's, but it just felt like there was actually a threat coming in whenever the screen would pop up. idk.
You can't watch this video without getting goosebumps every time these warnings pop up.
