- Fly fishing for Wild brown trout on a stunning river in Lancashire. I love this stretch of river becayse it's so wild in every sense of the word, a great example of a well maintained quiet rural river. This is my first ever trip specifically targteting wild trout on the fly, and what a great success it was. I managed some really cool looking trout, and even captured some completely undeniable evidence of the wild black panthers that are rumoured to roam the North west 😂.

Small streams dont require a sinking line and as a novice a sinking line is far harder to use. I love your humility, small river fly fishing isnt mastered in 5 mins. Stick to naturals too, spider patterns and nymphs until the dry fly comes into its own as the season progresses. Well done, love your vids.

Good lad is Sam and he ties some cracking flies,I was fishing with him when he got his first fly caught bass on one he had tied and to say he was happy is an understatement.

Lovely fish and that black wet fly was a perfect choice. Casting across and letting the fly drift down with the take as it swings across the current is, I understand, a classic way of fishing wets. Well jealous! Casting was great too

Great vid man, loving seeing more fly videos! Just a couple of tips, cast across stream so the drift can be achieved, and also 'mend' your line to turn the leader and keep a fairly straight line through the drift! Keep it up bro

Floating No5 line , 12’ tapered leader with 3/4lb tippet . Try some natural nymphs, Hares Ear , Pheasant Tail , beaded preferably! Great effort, Greetings from Ireland

Mend your line, with a little upstream flick, to stop your fly dragging when you cast across the moving stream

Congrats on your first wild brownie on the fly rod!!! Just keep fly fishing that foam line, which as you know is the conveyor belt for food for fish. I’m a little puzzled as to why you switched out the but section of your 7 WT rod thinking it would “become a 5 WT rod”. I’ve been fly fishing for over 30 years and simply have never seen that done. Instead, I would just switch to a 5 WT rod instead of running the risk of, “mixing & matching different WT rods”. Which is why many fly fishermen own multiple rods. We want the line WT to match the WT of the rod. Excluding of course when you either want to over line your rod, or in this case under line your rod. But you would just use a reel with a different line WT instead of mixing & matching sections of different WTs of rods. But that’s a beautiful river you’re fishing. I sure wish I was “across the pond” fly fishing it with you. Just keep fishing that foam line! Another way to ensure your success is to cast upstream instead of downstream because the fish are facing the current looking for food and are far less likely to see you behind them. Tight lines. 😇
I'm not surprised you haven't seen it before, it's a new concept from travel rod company Rigged and Ready. one compact rod delivers two configurations depending onn how it's set up! yes there is a little compromise compared to a specialist rod for sure. Thanks for watching!

Early spring and a big water can leave experienced fly fishers baffled too! Although it's probably the nicest time to be out!
It's worth trying a semi weighted black streamer (wooly bugger? ) in such conditions, it works (sometimes 😂) upstream, downstream, across etc using it to search likely holes like you would a spinner.
It's crude fly fishing but you can change to nymph or dry fly as the water drops and fish show on the surface. I usually set up 2 rods for that plan, given time.
I can remember an old bailiff telling me as a teenager "any colour of fly so long as its black"
An experienced euro nymph guy would have a dozen trout from there in those conditions, but is that really fly fishing??? 😂👍👍👍

Nice video! It resonated with me as I am also on a mission to catch my first fly caught wild brownie, hopefully on a dry fly. River fishing, particularly with a fly rod is very new to me so I also don't really know what I am doing! So far I have lost about thirty quids worth of flies in trees, lost a wild brownie on a nymph and caught a couple of rainbows and a chub. The mission continues! I will take even a thumb sized wild brownie! Even blanking on a nice river is a good day though. I also wasn't sure about lines and have just bought a replacement WF5 line for my set up. I don't think it has any sinking capacity but I don't know if that is good or bad! I notice you were mainly casting across the stream or downstream. Shouldn't you cast upstream and let the fly naturally float towards you in the flow whilst taking in line to maintain good contact for a take?
It’s definitely not easy learning to fly fish, I can’t wait for the dry flies to start coming into their own. Yes casting upstream does sound like a good idea, I’m just so used to lure fishing retrieving mostly across on the swing that that’s what I do naturally! I’ll pay a bit more attention to the upstream casting next time I go out 👍
First and foremost, love watching your vids me and my mate watch your vids then want to plan a day out ha, just a thought I do a bit of fly fishing and just this year bought me and my dad our first tenkara rod and for the small rivers you go on they would be perfect for a new vid and they don't break the bank 👍

Congratulations George, target complete. You're casting quite well now pal and the choice of flys will become easier with experience. Always chat to other anglers or the bailiff and ask for help chosing which fly to use and always ask why they would choose that particular fly pattern. Most anglers wouldn't mind passing on their knowledge. Also get yourself a good pair of chest waders, that way you can get below those weir pools and cast upstream. I'm in no way an expert on the subject but i learnt myself but doing just that, asking the questions and trusting your own ability. The only other piece of advice i would give is to get the line on the reel as quickly as possible so you don't have that big belly of line in the water dragged by the current downstream that the fish can run into. You can get the line on the reel and play the fish using the clutch. Anyways tight lines and enjoying the content. Well done George 😊😊
Thanks for the in depth comment mate that’s all very helpful. Not quite experimented yet with playing a fish on the reel, next time I’m out I’ll have to give it a go. Just used to fishing stillwaters for rainbows I forgot that could be an issue!

@@jamiewalters7750 was definitely a porpoise! Thought dolphin at the time based on a quick glimpse but when I slowed it right down it became apparent. I know exactly what you mean with the line, had a small fish swim round me the other day when I was playing it, nearly got tangled in the line. I’ll have to be careful!

Haha great fish, can always count on a wet fly on the swing. A dry fly and a nymph dropper works well too!

I would save the bright orange flies for rainbows, black flies show up beautifully in stained water, you can have a red tail or something like that, there are thousands of traditional patterns to pick from. Try to cut down on your false cast's. Overall well done.

Thanks mate! Really enjoying the fly fishing at the moment. It’s definitely very different to lure fishing, and yeah the waders have been invaluable so far!
I find streamers work best when the weather has warmed up a bit. A bit early yet, IMO. And try Clouser Minnows. They are as good as anything and cut through the surface and get down very quickly. And swimming upside down, they are not so prone to getting snagged. Early season on our northern rivers often consists of waiting for hatches around lunchtime that are short in duration. Large Dark Olives, March Browns and Grannom are the principle flies.

Have you used the fly setup on the X5 Adventurer. I took mine out this morning for my very first fly fish, I was useless.
I have mate yeah, it’s a good little rod but can be a bit tricky to start on. One thing you can do to help is maybe go one line size up that it says to which can help you get to grips with casting!

Have you ever been to bank House fly fishery in Lancaster? Right around the corner from me. I was advised to go there and talk to the owner as I'm brand new to fly fishing and don't really know where to start in a practical sense.
I've heard good things about it mate, supposedly some very big fish in there

Great vid man I got a fly rod of my da last year and lots of flys but I don't really not what line to get for it and the size of leader for it ider any tips would be help full as I'm going to try it out for the trout
I’m not really the man to ask mate but regarding line that depends on what weight your rod is rated to cast! As for a leader I just use one 5 feet but I’m only just starting to learn myself

Just wondering why you have to wet your hands for trout?
Just something to do with their skin etc , always safer holding them with wet hands
If you handle a trout with dry hands it can damage the slime covering their body making them more susceptible to diseases etc 👍
Should do it with all fish really. Wet your mat and net too.

There isn’t a great run of salmon in that river anymore unfortunately! I’ve accidentally hooked one on trout gear once though, I think I will give it a go later on in the year for sure 👍
I'm not an expert but I reckon you would be more successful if you fish up river rather than casting down river.. also don't try and cast so far... presentation is more important.. brilliant video though.. you're a star

Something called tippet is best, or you can use fluorocarbon. Plenty of good knot tutorials on UA-cam that’ll be able to explain better visually than me explaining!
