@@razorback9926 , This makes more sense. I can’t believe that they’d cut out a scene with Curly in it. I’m sure he was too sick to do it. They probably did want him to do it, but I can’t believe he did it.
Even though Curly's cameo appearance was used in HOLD THAT LION at a time when he was feeling better, his cameo role as the quick tempered chef in MALICE IN THE PALACE was deleted because his failing health affected his performance. Afterward, he suffered further massive strokes. In 1952, Curly died from stroke related complications at age 48.
Excellent back story, Rick! As you were explaining the deleted scene I was thinking how cool it would be if someone actually had a copy of that, and then, you touched on that idea also. What a treasure for Stooge fans is that little 10 second outtake every reappeared! Keep up the outstanding work, Rick! Always look forward to your UA-cam posts.
Had a look in my attic today and found the 10 second scene with Curly. Also, the Marx Brothers in "Humor Risk" and Lon Chaney in "London after Midnight". Think they're worth anything?
Good and interesting video, Rick! I knew about Curly being in the scene on the train in "Hold that Lion!" But not Malace in the Palace. Would like to see chef Curley. I knew about his health issues too. Big Stooges fan. Although, I lost some collectibles. Over the years. Take care. Happy New Year! Like all your videos, Rick.
When I worked for a film storage vault at a military base, there were scores of Three Stooges negatives in their cans at that vault. I wonder if any of those had the missing footage. I wish I knew who worked there now.
I knew of the last time we see Curly being asleep on a train, with a full head of hair and a hat over his face. It’s interesting to hear about him making another appearance later, but it’s a shame it was cut. Thanks for the video Rick, hope you’ll have a great year and keep out the great work!
The story is Curly's scene in Malice in the Palace was deleted because of how frail he looked as a result of the strokes. The story about his strokes affecting his speech is also probably true. Also, according to Moe, the Four Stooges scenario was discarded because of Curly's poor health. He was quoted as saying "The Four Stooges could not be sustained." That had to be because of Curly's health.
A Happy & Healthy New Year to you Rick & your family!!!! Thank you for your continued great content, I'm proud to be part of the Rick Nineg family!!! Continued growth & success for 2022!!! 🎉🎊🎈
One of my favorite shorts. It doesn’t even look like Curly, wow. Had no idea about this, thanks for bringing it to us. Happy New Year! Looking forward to a great year of videos!🎉🌟🎉
Malice in the Palace is one of four shorts that ended up in the public domain. It's also one of four shorts remade using fake Shemp. The Marx Brothers went from four to three. There were at least five in total. Shemp was a Stooge first. Curly replaced him. After his stroke, Shemp came back.
"Malice in the Palace" was made in 1949, when Shemp was in good health, no need for a fake Shemp. Fake Shemp was used in a 1955 short "Rumpus in the Harem" after Shemp had died. "Rumpus in the Harem" uses some footage from "Malice in the Palace", along with fake Shemp, who is considerably taller than the real Shemp.
Yes, Curly shot the footage as the chef for Malice In The Palace, but he never recovered from the stroke he suffered in 1946, but his performance was very lackluster, so his scene was cut and his chef's role went to Larry.
Yes, there's a reason it was deleted. That reason most likely is because it wasn't up to the standards that Curley had prior to the stroke(s). Sad.....
@@icyshack5946 I read that, too. Cohn was stupid doing what he did; his piss poor treatment of Curly cost Columbia their MVS (Most Valuable Stooge), and paved the way for Shemp's return. And you may know the fact that Curly's unhealthy eating and heavy drinking started after his second wife divorced him in 1940. Unfortunately Curly made himself believe that women would find him unappealing because of his shaved head, which to me, was a copout.
@@icyshack5946 You're absolutely right. When Shemp came back to replace Curly, Cohn expected him to take a pay cut. When Moe made one of his guest appearances on The Mike Douglas Show in 1973, even he admitted Cohn was a tyrant. Between Cohn and Ted Healy, I'd say Cohn was worse than Healy.
Thumps up Rick! Great research on this part of stooge lore. I already knew that curlys part in this had been cut but I didn't know exactly what his part consisted of., If there was dialogue for him etc. That clears up alot of questions. Love stooges trivia and unknown facts!
Curly was a great stooge. Back around 1986, his grandson appeared as a contestant on Elaine Joyce's syndicated version of "The Dating Game." He didn't look much like Curly. Woo Woo Woo Woo Woo ..... Nyuk Nyuk Nyuk Nyuk Nyuk. Back around 1983/84, there was a song called "The Curly Shuffle." It was funny when Shemp was trying to eat the hot dog as it licked him like a real dog would do.
Happy New Year!! I was thinking maybe another reason Moe thought about bringing Curly back was to give him some kind of motivation to recover..giving him something to look forward to if he did
I would have liked to have seen Curly Howard as the chef in the "Malice In The Palace" film short, but I thank you for providing a description of the scene along with the approximate dialogue. I have always been a fan of The Three Stooges, primarily the Moe Howard, Larry Fine & Curly Howard configuration.
I also remember reading somewhere that the scene was discarded because of how the stroke Curly had affected his speech and they thought that audiences wouldn't be able to understand him
Thank you so much for this info! I had always heard about a deleted last segment of Curly, but you have now answered my question!! Malice in the Palace, and he was a chef!! Dang, he didn't look like himself at all in that still!! Thanks again...!
Lol how did you not know that was him on the train? It looked like him and he did his famous woo woo woo and his dog bark, no offense but someone has to be totally blind not to see that was him.
Curly was my favorite of the Stooges, and it was fun to see him on screen with Moe, Shemp and Larry at the same time. He had problems remembering his lines in several episodes, and that could have possibly been part of the reasoning behind the scene in Malice in the Palace was deleted. According ro Moe, they tried to put him in other episodes as well, but none of them worked out that well, and those scenes were also left on the cutting room floor. May they all continue to Rest Peacefully.
My favorite scene of that episode was when the dog and cat got into it under the table and the two men flipped the table over causing the food to fly, following up with the slap schtick from Moe onto Shemp and Larry. 😊😊😊
Wonderful video & information. While I had seen the still before, I had not been aware of the dialog. "“Soitenly! You wouldn’t think I’d be eatin in this dump!” - that would have been a classic line. How I wish it had been included.

An interesting thing about this is that it is said that Curley died from obesity.. when in fact, he had lost quite a bit of weight before he died. in fact, Curley never was that obese.
Wow, Corley is recognizable in his non-dialog scene in Hold That Lion, but in this scene he looks so different. But for him to have a scene with some dialog....soitenly! His voice is unmistakable, as was his natural feel for comedy & his perfect timing. I do hope someone dies find this scene.

There is an edit with him in it. the show used to play on tbs if I'm not mistaken and that particular episode had the curly screen in it. He also used a strong fake accent during the sceen. There was also another short where curly was again on a train but he was in a trench coat with sunglasses and hat and had a really long beard.
This all originally came from Larry Fine in his Bio he wrote in the early 70s. Many claim this isnt Curly, but look at pictures of Curly around the time of the episode was made, he lost a ton of weight.
Poor Curly. He could have potentially lived until the first couple of years of the 21st century. It would have been interesting to have seen him live that long.

I may be a little confused but isn’t malice in the Palace when Shemp had his heart attack and they could not finish filming it? Or was that during a different short?
Shemp had the heart attack that he died from in 1955, six years after Malice. There were four shorts released following his death that used mostly stock footage, and in new scenes Joe Palma was the infamous "fake Shemp".
