I know Shemp and Moe were Curly's brothers, but I still find it incredibly moving that Shemp, Moe, and Larry loved Curly enough to financially support him during his declining years.
They had a lot more sympathy than Columbia Pictures. The studio boss didn't care that Curly was sick, nor that Shemp died of a heart attack in 1955. He warned, "You'd better find someone else! I'm not paying for the TWO Stooges!"

From what I read Moe truly was the leader of The Three Stooges. He also looked out for and took care of Larry in his later years. Moe Howard was a stand up guy.
I heard that was Larry's idea. They were all cool in their own ways.

Imagine being such a comedic genius that almost 100 years later, your comedy still holds up and makes people laugh. Absolutely incredible.
I'm 64 years old. The stooges still make me smile and forget my troubles. The brothers stooge will always shine. My favorite Curly stint was the " The Curly Shuffle" ! It never got old to me! God rest his merry soul.

I consider it my favorite piece of entertainment that happens to be in public domain.
Most of his 97 shorts are comedic masterpieces, from one brilliant gag or line he uttered or another! "Violent is the Word For Curly" (1938) is one of his finest performances!

I love all the Stooges for what they brought individually, but Curly's childlike charisma is what made me a fan as a kid.
He's so unique. Never be another like that guy, and so many copied him.

He was the heart of the group. Not to take anything away from Joe, Curly Joe, or Shemp, but Curly brought a sense of humanity and sympathy to the trio.
He was definitely my favorite. Moe really put his body on the line for the trio, but was not as likeable
Shemp was great, and not to be too negative, but Curly Joe and Joe were when the group became a corpse. Can’t watch a single one of their films.

I had to watch it again in order to yell that Moe's slap caused the spin. The first time I saw it, I thought the spin was caused by some kind of mechanical device!

Curly was always my favorite. With his over-the-top mannerisms and sound effects, it was hard to beat his comedy. I still watch a two-hour block of Stooges shorts on MeTV every Saturday night, before Svengoolie. No matter how many times I see the same bits, I always laugh!

I remember some, like the ghost of King Rootin- Tootin, from when I was a little kid. I must confess that as a class clown and generally goofy personage, I have stolen a lot from Curly. And as many times as I've seen their shorts, they still crack me up!😅😅😅

While not diminishing any of the other Stooges, Curly made the group iconic. He really gave that live action cartoon quality that no one else had. The physical comedy, the "Woooo wooo woo" sounds, that angrily hopping about in place and smacking his face over and over. Just the perfect balance with Moe and Larry that makes his shorts the best of the bunch.
I'd say it was pretty even between Moe and Curly. The annoying guy is fun, but he needs a gruff bully to play off of, which makes More equally as necessary.
To put it another way, would SpongeBob be anywhere near as funny or iconic without Squidward? Would Amadeus be as great a movie without Salieri?

You really got to give credit to both Moe and Larry to be so selfless to give Curly the bulk of the comic gags and screen time - not too many other teams would recognize the benefits of having one of its members to take centerstage above the others for the common good and put aside their egos

They had no choice. They were talentless.
I don't know. Larry had calluses on his cheeks and Curly burned it up fast. I think Moe had it the easiest.

@@badad0166 Moe often got the most painful pratfalls, since his character was a bullying jerk, naturally he gets the most spectacular comeuppance.
They all complimented each other so well..pure chemistry.

I’m almost more curious about Joe, since I know little about him.
To me (i grew up with a wardrobe full of stooges vhs - strictly of shemp or curly shorts), (curly) joe was indicative of the stooges "carrying on longer'n they shouldve."
Moe and larry were always there, but itll forever be: #1 IS curly, then moe, then shemp, then larry, and thats it (sorry).
Larry is the most level-headed, so arguably the best in some regards, but pales in comparison to the other /stooges/. Moe being #2 to curly is, indeed, because the stooges swapped curly for shemp and vice versa, but larry could not have been larry with a different "leader."
A docu-mentary/-mini on Moe would HAVE to be daunting, as, how could one dissect the complex character of an "abusingly loving brother," (only a valid descriptor in the context of the shorts) without a detailed memoir. Ive heard horror stories of curly's excess and shemp's calloused face during his wake(?) before but a Moe-cumentary would prolly have zero laughs.. but it should be a thing

Curly was always my favorite. I grew up in the 70’s watching them and couldn’t get enough. Its sad he died the way he did. I hope he knows how truly loved he was.

He was the funniest ..but the heart and soul of the act was moe in my opinion. Everything you see from fleshing out each character, to the growth and longevity of the stooges...it'd all moe. The act truly died when he did

Some of my best memories are sitting on the couch at my grandpa's house watching the 3 stooges with him on vhs. Curly was always my favorite, he reminded me a lot of Chris Farley
Same for me. Me and Papu would watch three stooges on amc hosted by Leslie Nielsen. We started taping them shortly after and I still have the vhs tapes to this day.
Growing up Curly always was and still is my favorite Stooge. That being said I have so much admiration for all of them the older I get!! It’s sad that they didn’t earn more for all the joy and laughter that they brought into our lives!!
Curly was the best. He even had the squeaky voice that went along with his character. And his timing and delivery was perfect.

I'm not sure if you know, but Curly has a grandson with his own UA-cam Channel, and it's an enduring love letter to the legacy of his late grandfather and the Three Stooges in General.
The tv bio pic about them was heart breaking. I cried when a few fans attacked Curly and Moe came to his rescue
I don't know how true-to-life some of those scenes were but I remember that one was horrifying. A great performance by Michael Chiklis.
Given his high pitched voice and seemingly naive persona, Curly always came off as the baby brother of the Stooges to me. And by the way, this channel needs more recognition on this platform than it deserves!
I appreciate these mini-docs you make on these celebrities, particularly from this time period. So much great stuff was made and in many ways, people don’t always know much about the performers. Thank you for the work you do Joe, keep up the great job you do and take care!

Mel Gibson was hugely influenced by Curly Howard, you see it creeping into his films. There would be countless entertainers who have been influenced by the Three Stooges.
He was executive producer of The Three Stooges movie in 2000. Most of it was filmed in Sydney Australia. It starred Paul Ben Victor as Moe, Michael Chiklis as Curly & Evan Handler as Larry. It is worth a look if U haven't seen it.

Curley, it's ALWAYS been Curley for me!!! The sweetest, funniest, happiest Stooge (on camera) of all. He made me & my family laugh so hard & consistent out of the 3!!! I'm so sad to know about his private life, it brakes my heart. I love him still & always will... 💕💋🤗

This documentary was greatly appreciated buy Three Stooges fans hopefully a lot of young viewers get to see this and get interested in watching their shorts they brought so much joy. I've been watching them for almost sixty years. Growing up couldn't wait to get home from school to watch them. To hear how the brothers and Larry helped him when he was in need was so heartwarming.
I can't imagine The Stooges if Curly had never been asked to step in. He brought so much to the act and made it look so easy. There are too many classic Curly shorts to name (and everyone has their own favorite.) Nice job on this, Jerome would have been proud.
I must admit, I adopted many Curly-isms as a kid, when no one else in school knew who they were. And as adult, it’s been useful to entertain my own kids.

This man was one of the first real comedic geniuses. He brought so many original elements to slapstick humor that defined the genre and single-handedly elevated The Three Stooges to another level. Curly forever.

You can tell they were the best of friends on and off stage. It's what made their act magical. Everything they did was original also. Because I tried acting like Curly too often in my early years I wasn't aloud to watch the show, but managed too. Still among my favorite acts.
My personal favorite Three Stooges shorts are the ones that take place during World War II. Curly was a excellent Mussolini impersonator

@@thewkovacs316 All the more interesting when you consider that when "You Nazty Spy!" came out, the American perception of Hitler wasn't all that negative; in 1939 a group called the German American Bund hosted a pro-Nazi rally in Madison Square Garden with over 20,000 attendees.
He must have been pretty constantly injured in one way or another. Not all those knocks were 100% fake and those falls looks pretty genuine sometimes. Pro wrestler tier.
The Stooges did their own stunts and rarely used stand-ins.
One exception was Three Little Pigskins where the football players chasing them crash into them from behind.
The stand-ins in that scene all suffered broken bones and backs, one was almost paralyzed.
Moe actually broke several ribs on camera when he fell off a table.
Curly has always been my guy in the Stooges. My dad used to impersonate him when I was a kid and then I did it for years (like, until college, I think). His energy was simply otherworldly and his physicality and timing were incredible.
You've always done well with the Stooges, but man Curly was my childhood and my fathers favorite as well. His legacy is incredible and was truly a once in a lifetime talent. Really well done, this made me tear up at the end.
My favorite scene with Curly was when he "shaved some ice" in "An Ache in Every Stake." 😅

For me, it's when he has to play a mental patient bitten by a dog to collect insurance money that highlights his improv and creativity. How many actors, let alone comedians, can do that same performance and do it convincingly as he did?
Thank you! It’s funny how I have heard as I grew into adulthood that women in general, did not like the Stooges. I never understood that! These guys were genius! We will never see the like again. Love the boys! That means Shemp, too❤️What a sad ending for such a young man.

He was an amazing individual with so much talent. Personally, he was my favorite, always making me laugh. He was blessed that he had supportive family and friends to help him during his hard times. It is sad that he died so young at 48. Without his talent I don't think this three stooges would be as popular as they have with all these years. There is a bit of Trivia.
The Curly Shuffle" is a novelty song written by Chicago based singer and musician Peter Quinn as an homage to The Three Stooges and Curly Howard, film comedy team. It was initially recorded by Quinn's group Jump 'n the Saddle Band, and first released in late 1983.

Those were all great skits Curly was in. But, 'Disorder in Court ' was hands down the funniest! I still die laughing at pretty much every time Curly is on the screen. He had so many great moments in that skit. Remains to still be my favorite one featuring Curly. Tbh Shemp definitely was great, but not even More or Larry could seemingly hold a candle to Curly, ever!

Yes they were all absolutely great but curly was awesome don't have comedy like that anymore once in a lifetime I am so happy that we can still watch them today!
I turned 67 yesterday, 9/29/2023. They were like gods to us little (and not so little) kids. We’d duplicate and act out all their schtick. That’s a long time to stay in the consciousness of people.

Your Stooges analyses are always so insightful and affectionate! I would love to see videos on the two most unpopular members Joe Besser and Curly-Joe. They are often cited as the downfall of the Stooges series, but I know that fans of them still exist.
I liked Curly-Joe in their films. All of us kids knew he was trying to follow the impossible and we cut him slack.
I think Joe Besser, in some ways, got screwed. He had hardly any time to prepare for his role with Moe and Larry (offered the job in December 1955 and started filming barely a month later). Columbia's shorts department was running on a shoestring budget (scripts were either remakes of earlier films or adaptations of TV/movie scripts), so the quality of the films fell off considerably. He was a funny guy, and I'm glad his presence helped keep the Stooges going, but his style of comedy didn't mesh well with Moe and Larry's.
@@MrMedictom I agree. Joe Besser was a funny, funny man in his own right. I just never thought he had the "feel" for being a Stooge.
But he did the best he could under the circumstances, I think.
And Joe DiRita did well given what he had to do, I thought. Were they Curly? No. But in their own way and their own style, they were funny.

Curly is the funniest human ever. The Stooges were so good they brought Shemp back after a tough situation and were easily STILL number 1. Nobody in that era or even after can touch them. Most popular comedian/comedy team ever.
I grew up with every variation of The Stooges and Curley was definitely memorable. Wish he could hear his fans now. He was taken too soon.
Curly could make you laugh, be struck by his trademark voice play AND make you feel empathy for him- All within 5 minutes.

I grew up watching the Stooges everyday as a child in the 60's afterschool. I was 40 years old before I realized that I have been imitating the sound that Curly makes when I'm frustrated just like he does! I also think Curly invented Break Dancing!
One of my favorite bits of trivia is that the school George and Harold go to in the Captain Underpants books is named after Curly's real name.

By a startling coincidence, there actually is a Jerome Horwitz Elementary in the town of Piqua, Ohio in our world, too. But I say it's a coincidence because the real school is NOT named for Curly, but for a doctor who happened to have the same name, who developed multiple treatments for HIV.

Sometimes In forget that behind the characters there was a really living person with problems and desires. This was great and make me reevaluate how I approach some performances.
I think my favorite bit, was when curley was getting sworn in, as a witness, in Disorder in the Court.
9:41 is one of my favorite hits. They do it so smooth and so quick, you have to slow down the video to really appreciate how well it is choreographed.

You did an amazing job on this mini doc. I've been watching the stooges since I'm 4 years old, I'll be 29 this year 😂. My father introduced them to me, like many other people, My dad discovered the stooges in the 60s when he was a kid. He's been gone about 11 years now but I still watch these guys on a regular basis and I plan on introducing my children to them. Thank you for making this video, you covered a lot of subjects and you're of course keeping the memory of "Curly" alive. When I was 6 years old watching the 3 Stooges after school with my sister and a childhood friend of ours. His mother babysat us 2 with her 3 kids. The oldest daughter didn’t want to played with us and she was almost being a teenager. I didn’t understand the slapstick humor in those shorts. Curly was my favorite when I was little. When I gotten older that I laughed so hard even though that I watched them when I was little. I watched them shortly after my car accident in early March 2012. I was watching them on TV. I wanted to watched The 3 Stooges movie during that time. I ended up watching 3 Stooges and I laughed so hard. My father heard me laughing and wonder what’s going on. He saw me watching them in the bedroom. I had a broken ankle at that time. My favorite scene was Curly having oyster soup. I laughed so hard!! That did made my day.

I remember watching the shorts as a kid, one of my friends said to me, "Why is Curley's voice higher in the newer ones?" We never knew about his health problems obviously. Thanks for this video done with affection about someone who gave everything for the screen and entertainment of millions.
I was a teenager in the '80s, which was when a lot of books about the Three Stooges were being published, and I was curious about Curly's illness. I wondered why he couldn't seem to ever fully recover from his strokes. Years later, when I went through paramedic school, I looked through the biographies to find the exact terms used by the physicians who treated Curly. And when I compared them to the info in the textbook, I was floored. Basically, Curly's first stroke occurred in the right side of his brain, which controls the left side of the body. It not only left him with some paralysis (note the slight droop of the left side of his face and a curl in his left upper lip in some of his later films), but it interrupted the function of his heart, causing a heart attack and temporarily blinded him in the left eye (retinal hemorrhage). It was a miracle that he was able to perform at all, let alone keep going for another year and a half before suffering the major stroke that disabled him for life.
I love your passion about the Stooges. They are such a great part of my childhood. Just nice to see someone who appreciates them as much, if not more, than I do.

Curly...the only Stooge to have a song in his honor (Curly Shuffle, anyone?). Disorder in the Court was one of many of my favorites with Curly. (Judge: "He's asking you if you swear!" Curly: "No, but I know all the words!" Lol!)
There will never be another like him....imo, I think break dancing in the 80's took some inspiration from Curly. (Certainly!)
I absolutely adore him...And will be sharing this wonderful comedian with my grandson. He passed before I was born, but he's always been a part of my life.
Great video on Curly! Definitely my favorite Stooge, but it’s also clear that the group dynamic really needed all three to achieve maximum comedy. They had to play off of each other.
But it’s undeniable that Jerry left a comedy legacy that is hilarious and timeless. Just think how many times over the years that you’ve seen an homage to Curly’s antics in The Simpsons or another show. The second someone goes “wooo wooo woooooo!” There is no question- it’s Curly’s legacy!
My siblings and I are die hard Stooges fans! I could watch an episode and repeat it verbatim cuz I’ve seen them so many times. The Stooges have been underrated and need their place and recognition in the entertainment industry!

All are so loved and unique in their own way, but even Moe and Larry’s grandchildren said in an interview while children, when asked “Who is your favorite Stooge?”, they all answered, “Curly”. 💕
Great documentary on Curly Howard! Curly was my favorite stooge as a kid and still is.
He still makes me laugh out loud. Not old enough to have seen them at their prime, but I did catch reruns on tv as a kid. Obviously didn't know any of the drama associated with the Stooges, which was probably for the best. Today I think we know too much about the lives of celebrities. But you can clearly see how much physical performance was put in by Curly especially. I heard they frequently "went too far" in the name of comedy. Still, now they're legends for the ages.
