  • This is a brilliant and tender short story from the book 20th Century Ghosts by Joe Hill. Joe Hill is the pseudonym of Joe King, yes, the son of the Stephen King. I have loved their books for many years now.
This was a first attempt at narration with a phone mic, so bear with me.
This narration is for purely entertainment purposes and to bring some joy to myself (I enjoy the art of narrating stories/books in my free time) as well as many story lovers and/or fans of the work being read. All credit for the story/book goes to the author. All the narration videos available on my channel shall not be monetized if I ever hit monetization in the first place.
If the author/publisher wishes for me to still take down any narration I will do so.
    Enjoy!

Love this story so much, almost on the brink of crying in the end of the story myself. Highly recommend Aloft from his Strange Weather, you will definitely love it. Joe Hill has the power of writing an honest and full of heart surreal masterpiece.

    SPOILER FOR THE END!
I’m on crew for a high school show and I finished reading this by phone flashlight while doing nothing in the auditorium lmao. I’m crying and trying to pretend like I didn’t just cry over a balloon popping.

💛I think all of us know this feeling when a story wrenches your heart out, esp this one. Your comment made me smile/be emo all over again remembering Art. Good luck with your work and the show. Have a wonderful day/night and thanks for stopping by.

My theory for this story is that Art was never a sentient being to begin with. He was just an ordinary inflatable doll with a personality and backstory the narrator made up to compensate for his loneliness.

I can see why you would think that but I think Art is a sentient being in this story world, he has family, goes to school and more tellingly years later the protagonist meets another Art-like girl whom he falls in love with . So while it’s such a complete this cant happen in real life element of the story it works brilliantly because of how it is written by the author, u don’t question the absurdity and in fact, it makes the story work even more!! IMO. 🤗
Art represents everyone who is a little different I guess. And how we need people who are different maybe even more than they need us. In the story the protagonist has an always mad, ill father and no mother and he is viewed as rough n scary by the other kids so he finds friendship and acceptance in Art. And similarly Art finds a friend in him. The fragility in both Art and the protagonists world and so in our own worlds too makes this story such a touching one.

@@TandiTopCat I can agree with your analysis. When I was reading it, I was going, “this is so weird...I can’t stop reading it.” Real or not, Art was there for the narrator in a lonely time and helped him discover a love for books and a good set of beliefs. I love Joe Hill and Pop Art is one of my favorite stories of his and I try to recommend it whenever I can.
