@@davidsantacarla hello! I watched the movie yesterday. I found it pretty decent and enjoyed it. I love these types of movies anyway ! I must confess though, I felt more chilled while reading the story. One reason could be that in the book the Grabber is the sort of character who is pretty much unknown to us, we know he is also a sad creature, desperately wanting companionship but damaged enough that he goes about it in this way ..and he is overweight and has issues. Somehow these tiny details make him scary as the killer, a creature devoid of empathy or morals yet sad in a way. In the movie ethan hawke is fit n all muscles haha and also i think the ending, his death at the hands of a kid seems a bit unrealistic even tho yes kid's got a strong arm n all whereas the book guy was this obese, once ur down difficult to get up, no exercise, no life kinda guy but in the movie he can run n take down the kid during the escape attempt! But this is nit picking for the sake of comparison. These kinds of stories are always difficult to relay in films though and I would still definitely recommend this movie to anyone. You were so enthusiastic in your comments that I wanted to reply when you said let me know your thoughts.🤗 have a good day!
@@TandiTopCat Thanks and I’m glad you enjoyed it. You are right about the grabber, I was very aware his character was very obese and that tied into making him a more pathetic yet complex character. I think what Hawke lacked in body fat, he really put into bringing more anger to the role. You really got the sense he was abused as the boys he abuses, a vicious cycle of victim turned abuser. The simplicity of your story telling was why I came back to this after seeing the movie. Because at its heart, it’s a very scary story. Quite honestly your narration made me feel like a kid again because i was lucky enough to have adults in my life act out the voices of the characters in the stories read to me. It adds so much. I just finished watching the film adaptation “The Black Phone” of this short story, it was pretty freaky not gonna lie, but it was really good movie. Loved listening to the short story it was based on.
Haha thank you so much for stopping by and giving it a listen!🤗🥰 There's another story -Pop Art which is another amazing short story by Joe Hill. you might love that one too. I have narrated quite a few stories but recently I upgraded my hardware and software lol so the audio is discernably way better in the latest upload - Peter & Max. Thanks again, have a lovely day!
Haha happens a lot of the time ! It's great you found the original story and author, Joe Hill, Stephen King's son! King's books have been made and adapted to so many movies. As a kid I remember getting fascinated by Pet Sematary and then later watched his movies based or directly adapted from his works, like The Shawshank Redemtpion, IT, The Shining, The Mist, 1922...Gerald's Game....probably more i dont know of. JOE Hill also has tons more of wonderfully gripping novels and stories. His novel Horns has been adapted to a movie, also Locke and Key is a series based on his work. He is a brilliant short story writer for me. U should Def check them out. Also, I have narrated and uploaded two of Joe Hill's short stories here - Pop Art and Fair Extension, both are great stories, may be you will like them too.
Thank you for your amazing reading ! I like both it's such a great script which rarely happens to take key parts of such a short story and add things great things but keep a lot of the story there the grabber's appearance changing is because the director wanted Ethan but I don't think that him not being a fat weirdo made it less unsettling Ethan got that weird part of him talking to him like things were normal down pack it's really creepy the way he dose that in both the book and movie. When you know he's a murderer. I actually like in the movie we got all the kids it builds something but it's what made me feel it was Steven Kingish before I knew his son wrote the original story. Each kids gives him a little push to beat the guy and I liked that Bruce still dose this in the book version. His sister's storyline in the movie was pretty good she still has a feeling where her brother was. Anyways I can go on but the brother sister or any siblings connection is always something I love in stories or movies I cringe when siblings just hate each other. Thanks again!
Hello! Bang on about the similar vibes of his father in Joe Hill's writing ! I think they did justice to the story definitely. Im very glad i picked up Joe Hill. Spoiler Alert Movie to Story differences reviews. I don’t believe in the movie Al is ever named he also wears a mask in the movie variety of Devil masks with smiles and frowns. In the movie each kid of the 4 kids speak to him on the phone at different points giving different clues and weapons on how to escape/kill The Grabber. At one point the Grabber leaves the door unlocked as a trap to lure Finny out so he can beat him. The ghosts warn him about it and since he doesn’t play his games and because his brother lives there Fin lives longer. Fin though has more escape attempts in the movie than in the story one point even making it into the streets. Grabbers death is slightly different too. Fin sets a trap and digs a whole for him to fall into then clubs him with the phone and chokes him to death all the victims speak to him on the phone taunting him as Finny kills him. Most of the dialogue between them remains the same the movie is faithful to that. There also a subplot about his sister who is younger not older trying to find him she is psychic and has dreams revealing things to her possibly by the ghosts themselves or by Jesus as she believes. She’s able to lead the police to the house right as Fin kills the Grabber. Fin home life and school life is expanded on in the movie comes from a abusive home with a drunk father and is often bullied at school.
what kind of person likes this or even writes this kind of trash!? 🤬👹 i listened to the first few minutes, skipped to almost the end about the brother. hateful, horrible - and why i can’t stand S. King novels. Carrie was awful, as was The Exorcist by a different author. if it’s a work of Art like Anna Karenina with a death, it’s totally different. but horrible stuff just for the sake of it stinks!!! “The Night of the Living Dead” was great! “Nosferatu” was a work of art. Spencer Tracy’s (no makeup) was incredible. there is such a difference between the horrible crap👹 :Pppppp. and Art!!!! 🌷🌱
I watched the movie finally!!! SPOILER ALERT BELOW. It was decently done. For me, the horror or terror of these kind of stories is the utter helplessness and not knowing what happened. To live your life daily wondering how could a friend just disappear and what could have happened to them and worse, how no one can do anything about it. Also the bittersweet nostalgia of that time, when kids were running around playing outside doing kids stuff, the world of children growing up which adults dont seem to understand or care sometimes and which often includes a lot of cruelty, the way adults or parents are not always the caregivers they are touted to be and ofcourse the heartbreaking horror of dead kids' spirits. The movie gave a bit of everything and is worth a watch for sure but didn't leave me as fulfilled as the story did. P.S. uploading a new story, Peter and Max. Chapter 1 is already up. Enjoy!
I read the book but I also decided to listen to this audio book One thing I noticed here, in the book as opposed to the movie, is the difference between both Finney's I mean they have very different lives from each other. The one in the movie suffers from an abusive and alcoholic father who, if he makes the slightest mistake, is brutally punished. He also has to see his younger sister also suffer from having strange dreams. also not having a mother why did she commit suicide and also receive bullying and lose his best friend On the other hand, the one in the book is the complete opposite of the one in the movie. his father is not abusive or alcoholic He has his mother with him, he and his sister and does not receive bullying and neither do he and his sister receive physical abuse or beatings from their father. The only trauma that marked Finney's life in the book would be being kidnapped by the kidnapper and suffering the things that happened in the basement just like the one in the movie... but things before that, nothing although it pains me to admit it, finney in the book has a very normal life and better than the one in the movie and better. This really hurts me and I really feel sorry for Finney in the movie. since these 2 are not the same ;(
hello, thanks for the listen! yeah they made those changes in the film n I had to re read the story to make sure I had not forgotten Finney's childhood home n background too. after few years, because of ur comment I had to go re check again :) I like the movie and ethan hawke is always good. I think the director wanted to show that 70s/80s time which Joe Hill states in a Vanity Fair interview: “It becomes this very autobiographical statement on the part of Scott Derrickson about what it was like to grow up in the '70s in the Midwest and what the '70s really looked like. And it's a little bit less of a sort of bubblegum, bright nostalgia piece as we've sometimes had with movies set then,” Hill says. “The 1980s and the late 1970s didn't really look like a Spielberg film for a lot of people. Instead it was gritty and lonely sometimes.” Always fun talking about stories n films we love, have a good day!
@@TandiTopCat Thank you very much for answering I must admit that Ethan did a great job interpreting the grabber in the movie, I would say he did better than the book version. Although I realized that the grabber in the book is "somewhat" crueler than the movie. the grabber in, the movie would say that it is softer than the one in the book (although it does not mean that both grabber's are the same, they are cruel in their own way)
Amazing book so far, I'm surprised it's only a short story given that they're making a movie on it. Thank you for this narration!! 15:31 I just finished it and the ending made me want to see what happens later on. I wonder how they’re going to play the scenes out in the movie.
@@TheLovelybbe Joe Hill already had a few adaptations turned into movies before this one - Horns and In The Tall Grass which he co-wrote with his dad. His comic book, Locke and Key has also had the TV show treatment on Netflix.
Hiya n Thanks! I'm so glad there are more Joe Hill lovers ! Will be doing more for sure since I love his stories, esp his short stories. Right now m trying to finish up a cover art for an Agatha Christie book upload for tmrw, but it's not one of her crime books. This is one of the books she writes under the nom de plume Mary Westmacott ! It's apparently a book she always wanted to write and was fully satisfied with n wrote it in 3 days flat! When I read this book years ago it left me feeling so unsettled and thoughtful for the rest of the day and I loved it!! OoOk, back to my art work! Toodles!
IKR? The Grabber was meant to be directly based off of John Wayne Gacy a.k.a Pogo the Clown. Hence why he's a party clown and described as a fat man in the book. During pre-production of the film it was Joe Hill himself that recommended to Scott Derrickson and the writing team to not make The Grabber a clown as he knew that the film would look like an 'It' ripofff, and it would seemingly Joe was ripping off his father's work. And it was also Joe Hill that suggested to instead make The Grabber a magician.
@@AWlpsSHOW36 They could've at least given him his chubby appearance by using a different actor, but I won't complain as Ethan played the grabber well! Just wasn't fitting for the description of the character. I understand not wanting to use the clown bit because of 'IT' but Pennywise wasn't really on the heavier side so I doubt there would be much confusion there.
@@AWlpsSHOW36 in reply to both the comment above- yes! I read this too, that Joe Hill was pleased the clown reference was taken out. With Ethan Hawke Grabber they went another direction in unsettling whereas the book Grabber was this unhealthy fat, lonely, almost sad person which is also unsettling as he wanted a friend, or company perhaps but in his sick way he would break that friend/toy. I don't think I would have minded that version of Grabber for the movie, tho props to Hawke too. When mundane things, people end up doing evil things it's more chilling rather than having, say a Skarsgard IT clown, in your face scary type, rampaging about.
Ehhh no... The movie isn't bad, but man does it overcomplicated it so much. I'm not even speaking from an adaptation perspective. I'm checking this out after watching the movie because something felt so off about it. Now I understand what was wrong with the movie: it took the premise of the book, and then kept adding details to it that it didn't need. The movie has all these little additions that make no sense: his sister's supernatural ability, the Grabber having seemingly no reason for doing what he's doing (and I'm sure people will defend that by saying "oh but it's mysterious we don't know what he's"), the detectives listening to a little girl's dreams because... She dreamt of black balloons... The movie is kind of a mess, and were it not for the good it does, like it's cinematography, the okayly written main narrative (with a compelling enough escape thriller feel to it) and Ethan Hawke's performance, it'd easily fall below average. The movie just wastes so much time with things it thinks it are cooler than they are. And oh man is the sister annoying. The movie could have done without her.
Ow! John Finney's knees hit every step! At least in the movie, the Grabber carried him downstairs like a groom carries his bride over the threshold. The Grabber was nicer to Finney in the movie. He brought him eggs and a soda. I think the Grabber already had groceries in his house. I don't think he made Finney eggs that had shattered to the ground.
You are right, the Grabber does not! He only tells Finney he will get him a soda in the beginning and later when Finney asks for breakfast the Grabber says he can not (as his brother is upstairs) as far as I remember. The movie changed the brother character n story a bit too did'nt they. Anyway, thanks for listening, it's a great story.
@@bridget1645 haha yeah that would have been cool! I forget whether in the movie they show Finney with his grape soda outside the store at the beginning?
@@TandiTopCat Finney was taken after school. There was no hardware store and no grape soda. I wonder if Finney was small for his age? I mean, the Grabber picked him up with his hand under his crotch like you do to a baby. Maybe the Grabber was quite large along with being fat.
@@danielhainline8882 with so much content we consume nowadays it’s so easy to forget haha ok so in the movie it was after school? I forgot that. The story however, I remember clearly, it was so chilling to me that one sec he is with his dad and in the few minutes his dad is inside n Finney is chilling with his grape soda right outside the store this kidnapping takes place, felt so real. I don’t think the book mentions Finney being small or not for his age. I’m assuming he was average. The Grabber is mentioned as being grotesquely fat though and the reason it was easier than one imagines for him to grab Finney was the chemical spray he blasted Finney with which messes with his eyesight, breathing, orientation all that n Finney even bites him n almost, almost makes it away but slips on an orange so the Grabber manages to get a hold of him n slam his head on the van after which the poor kid just slumps out.
I wasn't impressed with the movie. Thought it was just OK. The story was just as creepy, if not more so. The narration added to this. I thought this was a wonderful narration. Calm, sad, and sinister. Your voice gave it a truly haunting quality.
SPOLERS BELOW! @Seth Stine Hello just wanted to say I finally watched the movie. Thought it qas decent but the story was more satisfying to me as well, felt more chilling when I read it. I think one of the factors is that in the story the Grabber, AL is shown as a sad, lonely, damaged character in a way tht is downright creepy, he is also overweight n has issues. Because we dont know much at all it somehow becomes more terrifying may be. And the movie has a well built Ethan Hawke with muscles n stuff n the masks didn't really do much for me. The spirits of the kids thru the black phone, well I guess these things r hard to get right in movies.
No matter how old I get,one thing remains the same.... books are always superior to movies, getting old, eyes aren't to good so I appreciate a well read story. Unfortunately the vocabulary pronunciation and diction, etc on so many of these are really abysmal.so..well done

@@Mo_Ketchups hello AJ ! While I’m blushing from ur kind compliments I’m afraid I have a small shocker for u! Ready? I’m Tibetan by ethnicity, born n raised in India! I get this question often regarding the way I look and how I sound so I’ll explain a bit if u don’t mind: 1. I wanted to give this story this particular setting as is obvious from the characters’ way of speaking coz it felt right plus I didn’t wanna go for an artificial American accent. Just kept it to how i read aloud and mebbe a bit extra for character voices. 2. I studied for 12 years in British era established convent schools in my hometown, so naturally I lean more towards the British English way of speaking. We had a lot of elocutions and recitals and musicals which I love. My home is a quaint hill town called Darjeeling (you may have heard of Darjeeling tea) which was a colonial British hangout for the Brits when they couldn’t take the hot central Indian weather. (My grandparents, like many others, had migrated from Tibet to India to escape the Chinese invasion and they settled in the north eastern parts of India.) Mostly we speak in English and Nepali and Tibetan where I live. So our accents are a mixture and a bit different from the usual Indian accent one might assume when I say I am from India. The north eastern part of India is wildly different from the rest of mainland India in terms of both race, ethnicity, culture and language. In the end tho, it’s more about our love for kick ass stories and authors and good narrations that brought us both here I guess ! So many thanks for appreciating my work! 😁 hope you listen to more stories I have uploaded and it brings you some joy. Cheers! ( P.S. I’m dying over Steven Pacey’s narration of Joe Abercrombie books right now, it’s one of the best !! Give it a try! sorry my reply turned out like an essay!🤗)
So far the book seems way better than the movie. The movie overcomplicated SO much and made me ask questions it didn't have any answer to because the pretentious director/writers basically just kept asking themselves "wouldn't it be cool if we did X" and then did it without thinking of the narrative consequences. Also, just as a note of constructive criticism for the recording (something I'm sure you've rectified since this recording) but there are a few instances where background noise could be heard: a door shutting in the background, a the page being flipped, and I could hear you swallowing at one point. It'd do good to eliminate those things as best you can as they can really hurt the immersion of the reading. Other than though, I really like your voice and the inflections you put on the narration.
Hello, thanks for giving it a listen firstly🤗. Secondly, yes, I agree noises and other interferences spoil the immersive environment and even the audio recording quality is not good at all for all the stuff I recorded at this period of time I'm afraid, I had nothing but a phone and earphone mic at that point😅. I recently started to upload again and this time I am using a (still budget but decent) mic as well as software to remove errors and up the quality a bit. Do try Peter and Max by Bill Willingham (of Fables comic fame) if you are up for another story! Lastly, I think the movie was good enough but prefer the short story version too. Happy listening!

I watched the movie when it came out and I had no idea it was a story omg
Hes a great writer and especially a short story writer! There's another upload ive done of his story called Pop Art which is sublime!!! Check it out if you wish k. Thanks for the listen and the comment, always fun to read what others have to say about books and stories one likes. 🤗

This is not some official audiobook by a pro, its just a random woman (me) narrating coz she had some free time and one of her hobbies is reading stuff aloud!
Spencer Tracy’s (no makeup) was incredible. there is such a difference between the horrible crap👹 :Pppppp. and Art!!!! 🌷🌱
thank you for this plot summary. now i really know that skipping this thing was the best i could have done! 🌷🌱
@@feralblueeYa want to a reason why you think those things are crap or simply throw an internet tantrum?
Enjoy!
Kinda liked the story but the movie was way better
Just saw the movie and man it's very accurate to the book/story
Brilliantly read! Thanks so much 💜💛💚💙
🤗ty, thanks for giving it a listen !
I read the book but I also decided to listen to this audio book
One thing I noticed here, in the book as opposed to the movie, is the difference between both Finney's
I mean they have very different lives from each other.
The one in the movie suffers from an abusive and alcoholic father who, if he makes the slightest mistake, is brutally punished.
He also has to see his younger sister also suffer from having strange dreams.
also not having a mother why did she commit suicide
and also receive bullying
and lose his best friend
On the other hand, the one in the book is the complete opposite of the one in the movie.
his father is not abusive or alcoholic
He has his mother with him, he and his sister
and does not receive bullying
and neither do he and his sister receive physical abuse or beatings from their father.
The only trauma that marked Finney's life in the book would be being kidnapped by the kidnapper and suffering the things that happened in the basement just like the one in the movie...
but things before that, nothing although it pains me to admit it, finney in the book has a very normal life and better than the one in the movie and better.
This really hurts me and I really feel sorry for Finney in the movie.
since these 2 are not the same ;(
hello, thanks for the listen!
yeah they made those changes in the film n I had to re read the story to make sure I had not forgotten Finney's childhood home n background too.
after few years, because of ur comment I had to go re check again :)
I like the movie and ethan hawke is always good.
Instead it was gritty and lonely sometimes.”
Always fun talking about stories n films we love, have a good day!
@@TandiTopCat Thank you very much for answering
I must admit that Ethan did a great job interpreting the grabber in the movie, I would say he did better than the book version.
Although I realized that the grabber in the book is "somewhat" crueler than the movie.
the grabber in, the movie would say that it is softer than the one in the book (although it does not mean that both grabber's are the same, they are cruel in their own way)
@@TandiTopCat Although with him, the theme of the naughty boy in the movie makes the raptor sicker.

@@RandalReid Stephen King must be proud of his son for writing such a good short story that turned into a movie

This is one of the books she writes under the nom de plume Mary Westmacott ! It's apparently a book she always wanted to write and was fully satisfied with n wrote it in 3 days flat! Hello, just wanted to say if u like Joe hill chances r u will also like his papa, Stephen King.😁 A short story of his uploaded today! Cheers!
Such a good book & movie! Though the grabber looks nothing like the book description lol!
Yeah! I'm glad the movie adaptation was good too. Story is great! Joe Hill is indeed as talented as his dad. Thanks for dropping by.
@@TandiTopCat maybe the soda should have been grape in the movie instead of white as a nod to the book!
Why thank you ! 🤗
I haven't got my hands on the movie yet! I'm glad you resonated with the sinister yet sad and dreadful tones of the story and audio.
SPOLERS BELOW!
@Seth Stine
Hello just wanted to say I finally watched the movie.

@@Mo_Ketchups hello AJ ! While I’m blushing from ur kind compliments I’m afraid I have a small shocker for u! Ready? I’m Tibetan by ethnicity, born n raised in India! I get this question often regarding the way I look and how I sound so I’ll explain a bit if u don’t mind:
Cheers!
