"He often finishes these forehands facing the net with no need for time consuming recovery" --- exactly why he wore his knee down. Frankly, I'm amazed his elbow, arm, and /or shoulder hasn't also gone bad with the sheer violence of his buggy whip forehand. I love watching him in action. It's pure, brutal force coming off his forehand side. Excellent video - thanks!
It's crazy just how unique nasal's forehand really is. I've recently been getting into watching futures and challenger tour tennis. After a couple of months of watching the differences between nadal and the rest is just amazing. Sure i see some guys that resemble's nadal's forehand from super crazy topspin to playing amazing defense to remarkable counter punching, mostly players from south america and spanish players who grew up on clay. The biggest factor i noticed from the players who use clay court tactics like rafa is that the player's ball doesn't have the weight that nadal has, it doesn't push the player back as much causing an unforced error or hitting a weak ball that nadal can easily put away in the next shot. Hitting something with crazy amount of topspin is one thing but hitting with the weight that nadal does is completely a different level.
Like other innovators before him (Graf, Seles, Agassi, McEnroe...) Nadal's biggest weapon is uniquely his, that how it works so well. His forehand and speed add to his pitbull aggression & that is why he has been able to edit Federer's championship era. Though he was out for a while, it's amazing that he's holding up as well as he has against injury.
Great one...thanks. Learnt quite a bit about his forehand here-- in particular the grip, the rotation and uniquely the return to the facing-the-net position. The facing-the-net particularly helps when you're approaching the net since you will always have the focus on the court to help you move in the right direction but being a right-hander I doubt if he will ever be a good volleyer
Wow!!! Rafa is really carrying a "grenade" blast-like in his arms right there!! Great player indeed! Godbless on the Wimbledon 2012 Rafa..you inspired me to play harder in life! Ty
Yes you are right, though wrist CAN biomechanically rotate or "twist" in 360 degrees. Its a combination of ulnar or radial deviation with either flexion or extension ocurring at the distal radiocarpal / cubitocarpal joints.
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE: it is not "WRIST" ROTATION, it is FOREARM PRONATION. In the backhand, it's called FOREARM SUPINATION. Even though it's pretty obvious that the the wrist cannot "rotate sideways", it still confuses people. Like when they used to tell us to SNAP THE WRIST on the serve, when again the wrist does nothing, all the pros serve with forearm pronation.
I believe the model at 1:04 to 1:10 is inaccurate compared to Nadal's actual groundstroke. The racket is actually suppose to be moving forward faster than the shoulders are. Racket movement is somewhat more whip-like after shoulder turn.
I can generate nearly the same amount of spin in any grip, and the nearly the same flat shot in any grip as well. It comes down to your swing axis, and the emphasis of your wrist and elbow follow through that creates how much spin or power.
Throw forward 2017, Federer have found a way to counter this high bouncing ball from Nadal. He started moving closer to the baseline and began taking the ball on the rise. He is hurrying Nadal, literally taking the ball early, and even volleying where he need not.
actually the straight arm limits the extension out towards the target beyond contact and his racket is working strongly across the target line resulting in quite a bit of side spin with his topspin. Nice vid anyway.
You cant just attack the topspin because of the weight of the ball when it hits your racket. The advantages are the height of the bounce and the weight of shot.
I understand what you mean. But it's near impossible to generate that amount of spin with a semi no matter howmuch follow through or wrist action. If you watch closely, at 2:13 - 2:14 u will see the backside of his hand facing the net. This is the same side of the racket that makes contact. It is a full western. :D
Not very good with sports physics myself, just wanna ask if the extra stress on knee joints is due to the rather unnatural stance Nadal's in after the completion of a forehand due to his "facing the net"? That is to say, he's not allowing his body to turn thereby forcing his knees to absorb the strain. Hope to get some insight there.
Nadal has already beaten Federer on his prime many times.2004 was the year their rivalry started to be exact and Federer was on the top of the tennis world during that time.so far,the head to head stands at 21-10... for Rafa!!
Along with Gonzalez,Nadal has the best forehand of all time. The most effective and consistent shot ever. You often see Fed's forehand or Nole's to break apart but you never see Nadal's. Most players have a big serve to help them set up to unleash their forehands while Nadal has a shit of a serve.Image if he had Roger's serve....He wouldnt lose a single match.
Rosol played well, it was a good match rafa just didn't close out and made some unforced errors, plus his knees were hurting him, rafa forehand is deadly ask novak at roland garros
may be cos his points are long and that puts extra strain in knees. he runs a lot more than anyone else and in tennis you gotta change direction far too often for your knees to adapt to. sport like netball and tennis has such disadvantages
fair enough, no more names i will take you seriously. first as a grownup, you should realize that just as you are entitled to your opinions, other grownups should be able to express their opinions without undue harassment from loving fans. you can not be annoyed by every little comment you see on the internet. In the context of this video, that comment was sheer genius and i love it in said context. finally, i will be cheering for nadal in the french open to make up for the names i called you
Good analysis. I always wondered where all that trememdous torque Nadal puts on the ball goes to? I mean, Djoker, Del Po, Gulbis and other guys can ball bash harder, faster winners than Nadal. Now I know a good part of that torque goes into spinning the ball rather than projecting it forward. Imagine if Nadal used only 50% of that torque into forward thrust? He would be bashing balls harder than Soderling / Delpo / Gonzalez.
everyone says nadal uses a extreme western which i use to believe, but i swear he uses more of a semi, but the way he bends his wrist causes it to look like a extreme western. he produces to much spin cuz of his over the head follow through and wrist action. extreme western grips just arent versatile enough and i dont see nadal using it.

You talk about running around the ball to hit it with his forehand. Yes he does do that but only sometimes, for the past few years he's been developing a very lethal two handed backhand which has now become a prominent part of his arsenal. How do you beat someone who can hit backhands at the same speed as players hit forehands...
This is the best analysis on Rafa's forehand I found on youtube.
not really because it misses the most important key to the Fh
Nadal is so dangerous
Anyone else feels the voice over and the sound/music playing in the background sounds the same as what you hear when they talk about serial killers?
Lmao I was thinking the same, this video was creepy

Rafeal Nadal the GOAT .....greatest warrior ever born in tennis history....with out Nadal no Tennis
Nadal always remembers this when he always plays, and he executes it perfectly most of the time.
Mental giant!

I absolutely love this educational video of Rafa Super-Forehand! My very favourite shot in tennis!
That is not steroids. He does more time in the gym than most pros. You can tell steroids when you see it.
Really cool, great analysis.
This was an awesome analysis

nice work! great to get to know

Same. He inspires me.
Dear Miss: You are correct. I commend you for your great knowledge and taste in really great players like Nadal.
Fantástico!
É meu caro Buck, o Nadal é e sempre será um dos melhores tenistas de todos os tempos...4 ever and never...
EXCELLENT, THANKS
Great Video
great video!
Wow!!! Rafa is really carrying a "grenade" blast-like in his arms right there!! Great player indeed! Godbless on the Wimbledon 2012 Rafa..you inspired me to play harder in life! Ty
That a great vid.Want to play that forehand one time!
Phenomenal
great vid!
awesome!
WOWWWWWWWWWWWWW........... that was super epic!
GREAT.
very cool video analysis.
Dario Manalo yes, just wrong though
I really like this report as I always believe that Rafa’s fh is the best one

Unreal guys a beast
This is becoming my forehand straight away.
I wish this video could post in horizontal flip to see as right hand. Thanks for the video.
the best forehand top spin
Amazing. There is any other video like this about other players?

absolutely genius
Are there any other videos like this for other players, because I really enjoyed this one.
His forehand is monstrous, I just can't imagine how much stress that puts on his arm and wrist though. I guess everything comes with a price.
The price is a few grand slam titles due to injury
But he will come back with his 10th french open title
CloudSTRIFE U were wrong. Hope u didn't have money on it
Let's see what happens tomorrow, shall we?
U were wrong.. he won the US Open as well

lmao. i love it when he said that rafa serves wide, when that serve was down the line...
i'm using his kind of forehand nw,the best
Inui-senpai has done his research!
I can generate nearly the same amount of spin in any grip, and the nearly the same flat shot in any grip as well.

NICE REVIEW!
NADAL # 1
Throw forward 2017, Federer have found a way to counter this high bouncing ball from Nadal. He started moving closer to the baseline and began taking the ball on the rise. He is hurrying Nadal, literally taking the ball early, and even volleying where he need not.
this is awsome!!!!! the miz said it
nadal is amazing
Prince Of tennis
Cool.
From Which match did you take from?
actually the straight arm limits the extension out towards the target beyond contact and his racket is working strongly across the target line resulting in quite a bit of side spin with his topspin. Nice vid anyway.
very well done analysis. Please do Roger Federer next if you haven't yet and post it. Thx
You cant just attack the topspin because of the weight of the ball when it hits your racket. The advantages are the height of the bounce and the weight of shot.
Hmm take it on the rise
do 1 for Federer!
I understand what you mean. But it's near impossible to generate that amount of spin with a semi no matter howmuch follow through or wrist action. Don't force yourself to hit this shot. Hit what feels comfortable. If this feels comfortable then use it.
great analysis
haha that's true. I tried forcing myself to do a Nadal forehand and it hit my head a couple of times.
100% Correct. Perhaps imagine him having Karlovic's serve, he won't even lose a set ;)
Nadal has already beaten Federer on his prime many times.2004 was the year their rivalry started to be exact and Federer was on the top of the tennis world during that time.so far,the head to head stands at 21-10... for Rafa!!
Gather up, Nadal haters, spread the love.
Just looking@ur profile pic Im DREAMING as well..lmfao!!!
It's like watching Federer retiring in slow motion, COOL !!!
How’d that work for ya
Vamosssssssssssss Rrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrafa!
well apparently you haven't been up close to see him practice or hit because he definitely does not have "just a semi"
Along with Gonzalez,Nadal has the best forehand of all time.

haha.. :D
would have liked to see him winning more games, this rosol guy
As far as I know the only truly AMAZING backhand nowadasy is that of Richard Gasquet's!

i think it wuda been better at higher quality :o
LOL! Good call
lol same, i use this shot for low balls or when im doing a running forehand
Rosol played well, it was a good match rafa just didn't close out and made some unforced errors, plus his knees were hurting him, rafa forehand is deadly ask novak at roland garros
See, that's why he is the best , but right now injured.Amazing player!

a lot of players find it harder to hit higher slower balls than lower faster balls
Rosol, Soderling and Darcis should form a group called The One Hit Wonders
How is it a joke? He has one of the best forehands in the world
not true. he's NEVER injured his wrist, epicondile (near the elbow) or rotator cuff. he injures his knees a lot but not his arms.
Good analysis. I always wondered where all that trememdous torque Nadal puts on the ball goes to? I mean, Djoker, Del Po, Gulbis and other guys can ball bash harder, faster winners than Nadal. I was forcing myself for the fun of it. Not in actual competition. Sometimes my follow through would do what Nadal's does as well naturally.
best comment on youtube
yeah.. it can be very deceiving considering how quick and fluidly they do it.. but it is full western.
it certainly does look like a full western there. hmm i dunno then. i swear sometimes it looks semi and sometimes it looks western.
He doesn't know... but everyone who sees his comment will know that !
no... He uses a Western Grip
Pronation not wrist rotation
didn't a lot of spanish players use this technique like Bruguera and Barasetegui ?!!!!
Since you don't know me, you cant know where i'v been or what i'v seen .
Its like federer holding a simple eastern grip and many coaches claim he has a semi also .
if nadal holds the semi a bit toward the western its still a semi.
every player adjusts the grip without noticing in different strokes .
so 1 time you can catch nadal with a regular semi and another with a 3/4 way to the western .
nothing extreme about it .
you made a common mistake like many others before you .
Then why do all the commentators and sports illustrators praise Murray's backhand? Especially is two handed.
federer did but still not able to crack that code...
You talk about running around the ball to hit it with his forehand. Yes he does do that but only sometimes, for the past few years he's been developing a very lethal two handed backhand which has now become a prominent part of his arsenal. How do you beat someone who can hit backhands at the same speed as players hit forehands...

yeah that's the only reason people will remember rosol
WHO?
