At the time, my family called me a traitor for not wanting to go to war with Iraq and even suspecting they didn't have WMDs. It hurt, because I did see the propaganda for what it was, and they didn't, and never apologized.
I suspect embarrassment at play. Here in the UK there's something of a denial condition from those who voted for brexit in accepting how much harm it's causing. Mistakes that hit on an intelligence and clarity level are the hardest ones to apologise for.
i think the worst part about seeing propaganda is the isolation. not everyone can see when it happens, and pretty much people rather believe in that than in you as a lone person against it.
You're not alone bro. The ideology is intentionally isolating. Imagine what would happen if it wasn't and people came together after realising how they've been conned.
How to spot propaganda 101: Whenever you read a piece of news, an article, a blogpost or a tweet: Ask yourself this: "Who gains from this?" The "how" and "why" come almost automatically after this.
One phrase used that always struck me as weird as a European was "quiet quitting" i thought it was doing no work till you are fired, but is actually "not exceeding expectations and requirements for your job to benefit your employer for no additional pay" I heard rich influencers scream at people calling them losers for it.
So, are people losing interest in climbing the corporate ladder? Maybe that's just as well. Maybe we should spend more time focusing on our mental and physical health, not how many toys we own.
@@andersnelsonOr maybe we should possibly even stop this idiotic game where every other YT commenter is trying to decide whatever we should all do to finally fix SoCiEtY?
That would defeat the purpose of propaganda. Why would the government, an entity that actively benefits from propaganda, work against its own interest and educate people on how to detect its deception?
Information literacy in general could come in handy. Baseian reasoning, etc... Most people think they were born with the ability to process information accurately.
I really can't thank my parents enough for stressing the importance of critical thinking when I was growing up. My father used to tell me a story about how his mother would occasionally ask him "why do you think they're telling you this?" During news segments or commercials.
Same... I will always remember what my father told me. "You know when you should get really worried? When it looks like everyone around you is agreeing with you all the time" (and vice versa)
There are alot of flat earthers that claim they are the only ones that really think critical. Critical thinking has many forms. Just depends what your source of criticism is. Scientific knowledge or just plane old mystical stories.
I've been doing that everytime I watch the state tv news here in France (which is rarely). Most of the times it looked like they showed some other country where people had it worse and were struggling with political or financial instability and then talk about one of macron shitty reforms or people protesting in the country. Seemed to me like it was made in a way to make you feel like it's not that bad here and you should accept your living conditions getting a little worse and not protest because you are lucky and people are having it worse elsewhere. Sometimes it was really obvious like showing us some extremely violent protest repression in the middle east or africa and right afterward talking about protests in france to make it seem like police isn't being too violent here... I mean they have to talk about both subjects but when they put them right to each other like that it's weird. The comparisons with our retirement system also where also biased, they always compare the retirement age across EU countries but forget other parameters than the age that are already worse here.
Did you catch trumpty-dumpty's plan to solve homelessness? It's another capitalist grift, another wealth transfer from taxpayers into rich pockets. To see that, you have to look beyond "he doesn't care about homeless people", the sentiment his plan overwhelmingly provoked.
In life i follow logic who is profiting and in what way when ever I watch something, one of the reason I knew vaccines for covid were 100% fine since it would have cost corporations too much otherwise.
As a small child my father was stationed at Key West during the Cuban Missile crisis. Our house was nearby on Big Coppitt Key. Even as a 4 year old watching cartoons , short snips of notifications would occasionally appear on the television warning viewers not to “give heed or credence to propaganda”. When I asked my mother what “propaganda” was , she just said it was rumors or lies people tell. She didn’t tell me then just how insidious it can truly be, and that was a very scary time for most of the adults around me at the time.
I took a statistics class in college and one part of the curriculum was how statistics can be manipulated. I think both of these should be mandatory learning in high school.
@@QUBIQUBEDI mean showing the different ways that a person can manipulate statistics shouldn't be biased. It only is biased if one party does it more than the other.

You’ve summed up all the unease I’ve felt about ‘the system’ ever since I was a teenager but couldn’t put it into words… Neoliberalism touches *every* part of our lives… When we as a society are at the point where we have the technology and means to provide healthcare (as an example) for everyone, but we don’t, because it is *unprofitable*, then there is something incredibly wrong with us as a species now… Great video thank you 👍🏼
Without the free market, technology wouldn't exist to provide quality healthcare to anyone, let alone everyone. It encourages competition and innovation, things that don't exist in a socialized system.
@@madladthad2403 Like what? And on what scale? The free market is responsible for more advancements in technology, medicine, travel, entertainment, and every other aspect of life than anything else. To say that socialism can take credit for anything even nearly as close is intellectually dishonest. But I'd love to hear about all the advantages it offers over capitalism.
@@madladthad2403 lol!! Wow, you really tried "the internet", huh? Sorry, champ, but you're dead wrong. Packet switching, as it was first known, was developed at M.I.T. The first node to node communication was from a computer at UCLA to a computer in Stsnford. The world wide web was developed with help from a developer in Switzerland (a capitalist country) and perfected in the U.S. But, hey, I don't expect much from a wanna be socialist who's probably barely out of diapers yet, but try again- explain all the wonders of socialism.
As someone who is extremely conscious about what information I take in, and always try to view things, especially politically, neutrally It’s impossible to avoid propaganda, and even more difficult to avoid being affected by it Case in point When asked where I was from, when visiting Argentina I said, Texas While not incorrect I’m a U.S. citizen, born in the state of Texas, and I live in it But Texas is not its own country, but because of the STRONG feelings that Texans have about their state, even with a family that isn’t that way, it effected me enough so that’s my first response It’s innocent for sure, but that’s how propaganda starts, innocent, then the bad stuff creeps in through it if you allow it
I think this might be your best video yet. Connecting the dots to the subtle manipulations of it all is the hardest part because it's the most insidious stuff of the whole neoliberal project. This sort of propaganda has worked to make explicitly capitalist and market oriented ideas into "common sense", and once something is that ingrained it's harder to get people to look at it critically. The cadence of this video, the way you ramp into deconstructing exactly that "common sense", is just top notch.
@@ChiefOfAss Socialism. And no, don't give me bs like it has been tried and it has failed. Not really true. Attempts have been crushed by multiple countries, particularly USA. Now, even capitalism can work, but only if there are EXTREMELY good people at the top. But, structurally, it is unstable ...
JT you’re ability to communicate the connection between workers material conditions into the contradictions of capitalism is needed and appreciated. Keep going!

@@itnotmeitu3896 *notes in the video, “I too spread propaganda, let me show you what propaganda is and how to recognize propaganda so that it doesn’t control you.” Propaganda by its proper definition is a tool, it is neither good nor bad. It’s how it gets used that matters. Propaganda truly supporting the common good of the people is very different from union-busting presentations.
That's good-- great even, but it's important to limit those trains of thought to some extent. In a world where good and bad are constantly at odds, it is a tiring battle to continuously fight alone... Talking with trusted peers and giving yourself the time and space to properly process and articulate your concerns and worries, I feel as though that is the way to combat the inevitability of burnout.
"What good is neo-liberalism?" Neo Liberalism strokes that part of our mind that says "Maybe I'll be the next billionaire?" despite the mountain of evidence to the contrary. Among people who ultimately think they're better than others, Neo Liberalism offers them the dream of one day righting the world to the way "it's supposed to be."
It's the ultimate "carrot on a stick". The impossible-to-maintain "grindset mentality" - and, along that vein, "monetising your life" and commodification of essentials like housing & food - are kept alive by the flase stories of the "self-made billionaires." They've _always_ got a substantial head start from well-to-do parents and living in an area where schools are better funded - and they don't have to worry about getting enough to eat or being profiled by police just for existing, so they know their future is secured to "follow their dreams" - and many went to expensive private schools & had tutors & other extra help. Not to mention that paying people to work for you is not the same thing as working, yourself. If their _company's_ ideas & innovations all came from "the collective", then it didn't come from them; they own the company, and the _ideas_ brought by anyone within. In fact, Second Thought has done some great pieces on the socially propagated story. It's been especially popular in tech mags & as a TV news fluff piece - dinosaurs well on their way to extinction - but also with the tech-futurists in a resurgence mostly as a social media phenomenon - which is being slowly picked apart by an increasing few, ever more onlookers seeing it laid out in the open, found out for the farce that it is. Fingers crossed for humanity...?
If I'm doomed to be homeless then why should I continuevliving? I have nothing to live for currently, and if having hope things will get better is propaganda, why shouldn't I just kill myself?
In other words, it tempts us with the idea of one day wearing the boot crushing our skulls, when we should be abolishing it. In other words, emotional and mental abuse made societal.

Oh my, it feels so great to have someone from another country deconstructing Macron's rethoric, I (and my work union) spend so much time getting angry about it that I have this looming fear of overthinking it. Thank you for this. Also, I really understand what you say about getting any job just because the market asks for it. I'm a (fixed-term) archaeologist and since my profession doesn't comply to the terms of immediate productivity and wealth creation, any time I can't find work feels like the government is frowning at me for being a lazy f*** unable to be useful to society, or for being so self-centered by trying to do the craft I like and studied for.
Where I’m from in the US, farming is taught to be a shining example of good, honest work. What isn’t mentioned is the behind-closed-doors fights between equipment manufacturers and their underpaid workers. Worse still, in states that don’t have as many people who want to be farmers, they “make-do” by using labor from undocumented immigrants who either are just looking for any income whatsoever or who are tricked into working in the worst conditions for the worst pay with the ever-present risk of their “employer” choosing to deport them if they disobey. We’re told to be what we want to be, but the system will always demand grunt work from someone
I admire your willingness to admit your own bias. It really helps make your point about propaganda clear, and showcasing just how prevelant it is by definition nowadays.
Then he was successful in his aim. You are set at ease early on with thoughts like “oh. That’s refreshing. He’s making his audience aware of his own bias.” And then he goes on to hit you with the very propaganda he’s displaying in this video. Wild
Making a self aware joke doesn't change the fact that this whole video is blatant propaganda pretending to be a video about how you're falling victim to propaganda. The fact that you're praising him means you've fallen for his propaganda efforts.
Bias is bias. Human nature is molded by local and environmental upbringing. You can't just "hit" one person with all the knowledge and values in the same span of time. You're gonna kill that person to death with overload. There is none what I call "true, unbiased" idea. There is always some semblance of propaganda, and it shows in this video. I do not wish to target it in a harmful manner, but one can clearly see what he is advocating. Biases are prevalent. This man is simply well in presenting his point.
I forgot how refreshing this channel is. Listening to the information and reading everyone's comments gives me hope for the future. At times, it feels like I'm the only one who knows this information due to where I live (Idaho). What I mean by this is that one doesn’t hear this type of language "around these parts." Most of Idaho is full of what I call "Utopian-Libertarians."
I'm not immune to propaganda! I try to remind myself of this on occasion and actively take steps to mitigate the propaganda I'm taking in (for example I NEVER watch "the news" and I avoid a lot of social media like Facebook) but obviously that isn't a perfect system either. In my experience, the people who think they are above it or immune to it are often the ones who end up being the most susceptible. A lot of people seem to struggle with general media literacy too.
On point. I reject mass social networks like Twitter, Reddit and Facebook as well as the news which is just as polarizing. The only mass social media I do use is UA-cam of course, in which case I watch mostly engineering or gaming content. I do get wary of channels that provoke the idea that "if only you thought a bit more, you'd agree with me" (example: the author of this video "second thought") so I approached this with a critical eye. I agree that exploitation is rampant but (in my circles at least) we generally applaud each other for doing things we like rather than what gets us more money instead of shame each other for having high standards for ourselves. If his goal was to show us how someone can push a package deal of ideas by giving a practical demonstration, I respect that.
I have a leftist bias, but when I listen to leftist coverage on issues I'm still looking for the subtle choices in framing that display the biases. They're rarely straight up lying like right-wing grifters are, though. What you agree with is what you should be most critical of.
I feel you. I dont watch news and avoid stalkbook, but it is also a lost to me as I do not know what happens in the world. At least, not knowing next mess gov/celebrity/corpo/religious figure/random people made give me some peace from feeling helpless but I am not fighting either.
A big thing I've noticed recently is that even if you are very motivated in other areas of your life, i.e., exercise or hobbies, if you are not super motivated when it comes to work (something that creates capital) you are considered by many to be lazy.
This is a unsettling truth because it really doesn't matter how intelligent you are or perceive to be, literally everyone is brainwashed into believing something. Even if you are extra attentive and careful there's going to be something that slips through the cracks.
Even this video, in places. There's quite a bit of "the elites have set this system up from scratch" being implied, where the truth is they commandeered a system and then rigged it in their favour. People will create markets instinctively, that's how they became things in the first place.
Even as a young teen I started recognizing that greed is easily the worst human trait. The vast majority of conflicts throughout human history can be boiled down to greed. Humans love to exploit everyone and everything for their own profit. I went into physical therapy to help others, but also for a decent living, yet I haven't had a raise in 10 years! Reimbursement rates haven't risen in decades for us while insurances keep seeing record profits. People say "find a different job!" Well, I've changed locations, but when rates haven't risen, no one can offer raises. My degree is in PT, not like I can just change careers at the drop of a hat. I'm trying to get us to unionize but people are so brainwashed, I don't ever see it happening. Greed is killing this country (US) and most the world.
I agree with you unless for the part that Human love to exploit everyone and everything for their own profit as marxists we are aware the theres no such a thing as an universal human nature, but people are products of the society in which they re raised, the material conditions determine human nature,We are all inserted in the capitalistic wold so people will act to pursues their owns interests because that's what Capitalism forces people to do....
We did this kind of news analysis (18:40) in one of my journalism classes back in college. Took a look at the same stories in a few different papers and paid close attention to what each one focused on specifically, and what words they used when describing things. Everyone knows news sources have their biases, but it's interesting to actually put them together and look at it.
I took a class on “Critical Discourse Analysis” (apparently British) and it’s pretty good. Talks about different “people” words, such as woman vs mother vs beauty etc, or action words like “tried” or “refused to”. Obviously there’s tons of examples but I can throw some terms around if it sounds familiar I was obsessed with it last semester, it’s my freshman year and learning things like this is a bit new to me lol
I think visual AI propaganda is a huge problem now. For example, if you notice the depiction of "attractive women", they almost always depict females with pre-adolescent faces. Consider how this will shape men's sexuality over time. They will seek out the child-like faces-- the children-- and not adult women.
Hate to tell you this, but men have been attracted to women with young faces since the beginning of time. If anything, people have started moving away from that in recent years. The age of consent is higher than it was in the past.
At the same time, it gives him an excuse to build a completely one-sided narrative. Kind of like saying "Sorry, but..." and then saying a bunch of offensive things, like saying sorry first makes it okay.
Yes, of course thats always a possibility but it's still refreshing for someone to point out "even i can tell propaganda right now, you have to use your own discernment". Its still a more truthful approach imo. @@antonimalachowski5262
It's impossible to be unbiased is his point. We aren't robots, everything we do has bias whether you like it or not. Saying sorry but is surely the opposite, trying to hide the fact you're biased to help push your agenda
You have to accept that you're in a world of influence and inspiration. Thinking for yourself and taking all the you hear and see and analyzing them with what you already know is such a valuable skill for everything you do. Do this for everything you see on UA-cam, even with channels you agree with and enjoy, such as this one, Second Thought. It will exercise your ability to craft your own path. It might be tough and you might not always get it perfectly right, but what matters is that you're doing this for yourself.
Do they not teach media literacy in schools anymore? Though my teacher in later primary school was big on tech, computers, & The Web, and on understanding how it all works and how to stay safe - from individuals who would do personal harm to us (especially as small kids), and also from the increasingly sketchy sources of questionable information with a slant that all points to a specific farce or another... I think we _all_ loathed having to do the dreaded BIBLIOGRAPHY for every paper, for the first couple of years anyway, just cos it was tedious. But many of us realised its greater importance... It was more than _just_ "showing your work," as it were (pre-ChatGPT, but ofc kids still took shortcuts & cheated). It was to ensure that we didn't just plagiarise, and that our sources were legit: citing your sources allows the teacher to see you've genuinely searched up info far & wide. And it's how I learned what's a "tabloid", for an extreme example. It's not like I gave any worth to those ridiculous rags ("Bat Boy _Returns!"_ heh, classic - there was even a joke about tabloids in the movie "Men In Black") but it was good to understand in concrete terms that some "news" is literally just entirely made up stories, for... _someone's_ entertainment. Little could we know how prevalent "bending the truth" (and outright making it up) would become, across the journalistic world and beyond, blurring the once-distinct lines between "journalism", "obvious farce for entertainment purposes", and "something else entirely"... But it was nevertheless very useful for me even now, well into adulthood. It leaves me baffled as to how easy people are tricked, manipulated, and swayed. And, though it stings to admit, _I_ had fallen for some of it, too, especially copaganda, and for so long. That one took a long time to fully shake off. I had to see some really awful stuff for myself... At least there was always a seed of distrust sown by none other than my parents, who both lived through a time, before I was born, when nobody was safe in our country, regardless of race or so-called "middle class". It never hit me like it should have until well after I had cleared my head and seen the truth. Sorry, I'm realising this is becoming more of a journal than a shared set of thoughts on a topic, but... Yeah, propaganda works, even for folks who believe they "would never fall for something so transparent, designed for some gullible patsy". At least I was never to the right of "liberal" at worst, but it does make you think. It's a confidence scam, in large part. Attach political ideology to personal identity (nationality, trust in police & the military, "marked" groups, etc.) and any objection is a _"personal attack."_ But I digress. Lol. Sorry.
Doing exactly that is what set me free from the insanity that is evangelical christianity and the way it is practiced in America and how it is used to pacify & manipulate the masses from seeing the exploitation of the poor by the ultra wealthy. Stopping ppl from thinking for themselves. The average evangelical America Christian will get mad about somebody being gay faster than they will about homelessness being on the rise, wages being stagnant and planned inflation happening because billionaires value profit over human life and all life.

The propaganda in neo-liberalism is real! This video really opened my eyes. I lost my job in February due to going back to school to better myself and opportunities. I applied for unemployment (I live in Texas) and I was denied for the simple fact that I won’t quit school for a job opportunity. Poverty is real as well. It’s right in front of our eyes.

Good sir, you just earned yourself another subscriber. Openly admitting to a bias in your opinion makes it even more clear to talk about propaganda. After all, propaganda can be viewed as somewhat subjective at times
Propaganda has plagued my whole family for a long time 😞 when I try to share them a news article or video proving that what they repeat is not true, they take it personally and lash out. It’s draining and I’m starting to feel like I’m getting pushed out of the family circle
you have to recognise we live in a post-truth era and people seek out the evidence they want. its important to respect where people are coming from even if you dont agree. its not your job to be the social police in your family. stay safe

I spent 6 months in the country nicaragua. It is the 2nd poorest country on the western hemisphere only to Hati. I have never been happier in my entire life. With less luxuries, the people made up for it with communal living and better connection with one another. I'm not saying it was perfect; for from it actually. However, they had much better public transportation for most people that couldn't afford a car, better socialized Healthcare for everyone including noncitizens and food was abundant even for those unable to afford to eat at restaurants. I was blown away with how different life could be once all the luxuries of america were taken away. It reminded me how much we DO need each other... Don't believe in any of the corporate propaganda they try to shove down your throats. We were built to survive in cooperation with nature, but it only works if we appreciate each other and collaborate together... and 1 more thing, remember to enjoy the little things, like a freshly squeezed lemonade on a hot summer day :)
If capitalism is all for democracy, why isn't employees allowed to vote for who should be their boss? As mentioned, the veneer of democracy is what capitalism wants, while working like little more than a feudal system.
Because that would be communism. you know, workers choose their community leaders and all. in capitalism, those with "capital" choose who should be the boss. you know, shareholders choose the CEO and all.
I’ve had conversations with people who insist democracy shouldn’t exist in the workplace. If not in the workplace then where? People aren’t happy about the way things work but they lack the ability to look at things through a class analysis lens. They aren’t taught the language to do so.

I will point out that watching this video made me very relaxed compared to a lot of the other media out there that tries to prompt a physical fight or flight response out of you. Excellent video. Propaganda is a difficult topic to tackle. On one hand, it is used to commit some of the worst offenses to humanity (fascism, capitalism, etc) and yet one must use it effectively to even promote a more hopeful future. As someone who grew up in the 80s, I can attest to the complete fleecing most of the world has endured thanks to neoliberal training. It starts early with the constant question "what do you want to be when you grow up?" - as if that is the only reason you exist. When I went to college, there were still many elements of education that were purely for the sake of learning and it was inspiring. By the 2000s, college was almost completely focused on "career training". Most insidious, has been the systemic control over all of our basic needs, making them so expensive as to put us all into slavery. It is long past time we start uniting as a people and create a better future, lest we all become servants to the worst of us (Bezos, Trump, Musk, Murdock, etc)
Parent: What do you want to be when you grow up? Child: I want to help people and be a good person Parent: No, I'm asking how you want to sell your labor
I was in college in the early 2000s and my academic advisor actually referred to college as a business and I was the consumer filling the seat in the classroom.
Just like everything else Orwell wrote, it sounds profound but in reality it's absolutely stupid due to his ignorance about any given subject, there are tons of arts that don't involve in any sort of propaganda, for example some landscape painters just like to paint clouds, there is no message whatsoever, only a smart fool would believe all things must have deeper meanings.
@@TheRealIronMan It's evident due to the existence of elephants who paint delicate images using their prehensile trunks with no conceivable ulterior motives that not all art is propaganda... ...or so the Germans would have us believe. (*^Norm Macdonald reference. iykyk)

Hope for what exactly?? Being a literal slave (by definition) to government?!? Literally the only people that would ever have a chance of gaining something off of communism are lazy people that quite literally add NOTHING to society! And if that gives you "hope" then that tells me everything I need to know about you. Those same people should crawl under a bridge and let a dog eat them.
The sumblinal messages in the text and pictures and diagrams leans towards thoughts linking to line of sight buildings on flat water with circle dots that move to devoid of obvious meaning except there round, I see flat verses globe emphasis and slant hidden between the words and other topics.. this is just one subtle bit of suggestive imagery to note the question is is it by design or finding and picking patterns and topics by random because of ones personal perspective so they will see signs of things relevant everywhere? Thoughts?
I remember being shouted down for being "unpatriotic" for speaking out against the war in Iraq. Regarding Neoliberalist capitalism, I remember Andrew Yang mentioned that there was a theory that people who worked old jobs could be trained for new jobs and all would be well. Yang checked the numbers and stated that instead of adapting, people overdosed on drugs and committed suicide. This neoliberalist capitalism has put many people in society in a very bad position.

It sucks, and it’s not the fault of the researchers and postdocs, but also I really enjoy researching & contributing to something important. I get criticized by the people around me for being “too picky” because I “need money” and I should just get a job even if Is “below me”. Getting a paid job means leaving my research, even though money is tight, I get by through financial aid as much I can. I am happy, and I would rather keep researching with people I like being around than leave them to do something I don’t enjoy in order to earn money, which will just be taken back away from me in the form of reduced financial aid. There is nothing wrong with being unemployed in my opinion, not just because it can happen to anyone, but also because it is ok to be unemployed by choice. Desiring to sell your labor for the profit of those above you is not a prerequesite to your worth or validity as a human being or your deserving of social support
@@GM14218 You can go to hundreds of sites that will critique any aspect of socialism that you can imagine. Most of those sites could not even explain the term socialism yet they can create an entire website tearing it down. For you to come to one of a very few sites that looks at a social society and how it could help, is pretty lazy and pointless of you. Can you give anyone a definition of socialism? Go back to putting your head in the sand. It is better for everyone if you are not seen or heard of again.
There’s a book called how to hide an empire. The book is more about how Americans celebrate the empire and how it’s taught vs that of the British I’ve just always really liked that title. Nope we are definitely not an empire we are a police force for corporations 😃
But you also notice that since America has tied it's empire so strongly to capitalism. As the American empire starts to decline so does the faith in capitalism.
I also find it funny/sad/ironic that so many people who love Star Wars and its rebel movement, and the heroes within it, support our own evil empire so fervently in real life.
I can't stop sharing these videos! I love how the way I've thought about our society is put into words here and helps me discuss what I think needs to change. I didn't even realize I was such an ardent supporter of socialism before watching this channel. I don't think I'm being convinced to think a way, rather the way I already think is being given definition and clarity.
Also a key word business likes to use to describe their workforce is family. I hear all the time “Here we work like a family.” That should be a major red flag. It’s just shorthand to say expect to work multiple positions you didn’t apply for or get less hours. If you complain you’re told to be more flexible or get hours cut. Yet most businesses today love to describe themselves as “acting like a family.”
And it's still technically true, based on the toxic notion of "family" that they have, which is a authoritarian figure who is within their legal rights to abuse and manipulate. They always try to supplant the regular definition with their definition, until it IS the regular definition.
This neoliberal framework is what really turned me off of economics as a field. I majored in International Studies, so economics was an important class when it came to making connections about the state of the globalized world. It's a useful framework for understanding the way that many states interact in the modern day, but the way that economists tend to frame everything in terms of profit was frustrating. I feel like they would even place a numerical value on happiness if they could. In some ways I get it though. By establishing all of these different aspects of life within a numerical framework, it helps to legitimize these things in the eyes of neoliberal governments. but it was till somewhat depressing to see everything simplified down into profits and expenses. It's not until you start looking into other areas of political science that you actually start seeing people place emphasis on the intangible aspects of life, like happiness, access to clean resources, and an ability to learn and communicate ideas. The entire framework of life as a marketplace is exhausting
I too find such framework exhausting, not because of economics itself, which I find extremely interesting to learn about and which has worked wonders to stop many of the old world's problems, but because a lot of people nowadays are replacing religion, ethics and morality with wealth and social status, which of course could never lead to happiness, because there is always a more expensive thing to buy. Also, economists frame everything in terms of profit because that's all companies generally want, and the reason economic liberalism was created in the first place is to take people's greed and turn it into a contribution to society, for you can not make a profit without offering a good or service at a good price and/or quality, although some still think they can make everything into a mathematical equation, which I believe is not possible.
I was once in Berlin talking to a guy who grew up in the DDR, his girlfriend who grew up in the FDR, and a guy who grew up in the USA but was an EU citizen (mother Italian). The DDR guy got very agitated by his memory of not being able to join the pioneers, and why it was so important for him too, because it was used as a punishment in school “you won’t be able to join the pioneers if you act like that.” Etc. I then said, “we had propaganda too.” My friend from the USA said, “I never noticed any propaganda while growing up.” And to the last point I picked up an old DDR newspaper from 1972, and it was fascinating that they reported on labor strikes in West Germany and the USA. While in the USA it is less and less reported, and we have no idea of labor history.
In the USSR during "perestroika", the state propaganda machine literally switched from "we're building communism here" to "okay, now we're tired and deserve a rest: happy capitalism to all, with social guarantees of socialism!" I grew up in the '90s and remember the spirit and imagery of a lot of movies, TV shows and other content at that time: "only the Owner can lead effectively", "If it's not yours, it's nobody's", "If you haven't learned to think differently in new economic circumstances -- it's your own fault for not adapting". And a lot of other stuff like that. At the same time, religious and generally "metaphysical" beliefs, disseminated through state institutions of education, information, and propaganda, have also become monstrously popular. In the USSR, all television was either informational (propaganda) or educational. Even entertainment products. On extremely popular TV shows devoted to science, they began to talk about "telepathy," "magic" and all that sort of thing, as if it were an actual scientific facts. And it was all as if under the general motto: "cut the bullshit, NOW we're telling you the truth!"
favorite argument i heard in the labor shortage are the talking heads saying the unemployment benefits were too good so no 1 wants to go back to work. None of them thought, wow businesses are paying worst than unemployment.
@@Nota-Skaven I got an idea. How about Let a laborer/manufacturer keep at least 90% of his paycheck instead of taking all 50%? What no? You guys dont want to adapt to the monetization and side gigs on the internet? all that influx of cash? What? Inflation? Lmao, this is why propaganda is so great. Young people today aren't gonna be stupid like me and work his ass off on a jobsite just to lose it all.
@@Nota-Skaven it's even worse than that imo, if you take someone who doesn't know how much unemployment pays, and asked them to come up with an amount that allows someone (or if you want to be "courageously" reasonable, their family or even half a family) to survive, virtually everyone would come up with an amount that's higher than what you get from unemployment. So actual jobs not only pay worse than what unemployment was very likely intended to be, an amount of money that may not allow you to thrive, but at least survive hard times, keep some dignity and allow the continuation of the working class instead of leading to the end of humanity. They pay worse than the absolutely gutted, pathetic excuse for unemployment we have today, who no one would reasonably expect anyone else to survive on.
Got news for ya buddy. Under capitalism you only get paid what your worth. If your getting paid $1 per hour you need to take some responsibility and improve your value (get education, learn new skills, switch jobs, start a company, just some examples). Why would we pay bums that are objectively value less to us unemployment for absolutely nothing.

Here's a comment for the algorithm. Let's get this thing up higher on trending! Great discussion on propaganda. As my grandpa used to say, "The only difference between propaganda and advertising is 1 letter and a political opinion." We have so much in our daily life it's no wonder many people have trouble distinguishing it from reality. And kudos to admitting you're biased too. I hate it when people try to claim unbiasedness in politics. There are literally 0 people in the universe who are completely unbiased but the sooner we acknowledge that, the better we can work around it.
Just have to say that I love your new 'kinetic' (for want of a better word) style videos. You have always made good points, but it doesn't hurt to have nice, active, visual stylings to get the message across. I still remember the video on the Palestine train crash, and thinking; 'He's not going to actually stand up and get out of the studio is he?' And you were! Great stuff!
This is one of the reasons I think some level of rhetoric should be required learning for young students. You can't become immune to propaganda but you can learn to recognize persuasive language and discern intent where it may not be immediately obvious.
I was raised in a non western country, the global South if you will. A country with a non democracy I am constantly surprised at how the "west", europe and the US, thinks it is living in freedom You are living in a capitalist oligarchy You are pawns playing democracy
More over, one day they may decide it's time to bring their democracy to your home. And they will organise a little revolution. Technologies are the same and works everywhere.
I remember being a kid watching Nickelodeon (pre-Obama) and the “Democracy in the USA!” Song would play between commercials. They had the propaganda in us early. 😂
Hello sir. Thank you for all the content you share. I appreciate the perspective through which you view topics. Admittedly, I do lean more conservative, yet your channel gives me quite a bit to think on. Thank you, Joshua
I recently found a post in the conservative subreddit, a leftist posted there asking what conservatism can offer the working class, it was very enlightening, much of what the conservative respondents proclaimed are near indistinguishable from what you described in this video as neoliberal propaganda. For as much as conservatives irk me I can't help but pity them after watching this, I get the impression that they fell for this propaganda the hardest and so are convinced that what's not in their best interest is actually good for everyone, I mean it's hard not to feel some sort of pity when you know they're brainwashed.
Yea man; the longer you watch these two sides babble the more you realize... It's just the lack of Gov. Adapting Taxes with todays tech and methods of monetization. I have NO idea why the laborer or manufacturer are even taxed when it's the workers that BUILD the biggest chuck of that National GDP. It doesn't take long for a normie to figure out the strats of a functioning society. I got into trades and worked hard right from the age of 18 in constructual high-rise and steel. I bust my ass on the jobsites just to get taxed up my ass. Lmao, like bro. It's not worth it when they cannot even tax the corporation and entertainment media. They literally just pay shares. Both the left and the right sides are so f'ing brain dead and follow trends they can't see the problem right in front of their eyes. If I was a big tech CEO, it would be the position I would want the masses to be in. Like it's so obvious nowadays with todays sources of information to crack the code and figure out who's paying more into the system. Totally unjustified and should be classified as unconducted and unwillingful slavery
Another brilliant and informative video. I hope more people come to realise this reality and are motivated to change it. Apathy is move beyond but I've left it behind and so others can too.
It really is insane how Neoliberal thinking has become the new baseline of reasoning for most people when it comes do anything to do with politics and society. Literally EVERY proposal or idea someone does is immediately followed by the idea/question: "but what will that cost financially?" (often followed by the question if it's economically effective) ....those questions aren't unimportant, but they shouldn't ALWAYS be the first questions that people ask. It really shows how deep the indoctrination goes.
Lol there is a reasonable extent to this line of thinking when it comes to tackling imperalist/American propaganda, and "People worrying about the economic repercussions." Is not it. Of course im talking to socialists who deny the reality of the economy, but still.

THANK YOU for pointing out how this framing of thought infects EVERYTHING in our society. as a student and educator, it drives me insane how a degree (and even compulsory education) are framed in terms of employment “down the line” or “human capital”, instead of coming from a more humanist approach. hell, i’d even take a pretentious scholarly approach over this devolution of thought. in a sense, we are actively reduced to value we create for others, so we have no choice but to define our education by what it can monetarily create for us; it’s a horrible, wretched, self-reinforcing cycle.
Basic media literacy is sorely lacking in Western society, it's really embarrassing when people act like there isn't a bias/ideology behind "fair and balanced" news.
You only really have a problem when you think that you are immune to propaganda. Admitting you have a problem is the first step. When you know you're not immune, you're in a better position to engage in critical thinking about information. People who think they have no biases are so riddled with bias that they're biased about being biased. Same for people who think they're immune to ads. They're so sucked in they don't even realize they're being influenced. The perfect consumer.
True words. Here in the UK the government is encouraging people to be part of the "gig economy" and become "entrepreneurs". Yet at the same time they are annihilating all of the benefits of being a small limited company (LLC) and screwing down on any benefits of being Self Employed. The words say one thing, but the hands do another. Its most over fixed charges and fixed rate costs.... if you are rich they are nothing.... but for your average person, being a limited liability company now opens you up to a HUGE liability of cost....

“If you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it. The lie can be maintained only for such time as the State can shield the people from the political, economic and/or military consequences of the lie. It thus becomes vitally important for the State to use all of its powers to repress dissent, for the truth is the mortal enemy of the lie, and thus by extension, the truth is the greatest enemy of the State.” -Joseph Goebbels, State propagandist.

I love the Austrian Economic slander. In high school, I read Road to Serfdom and became convinced government was the root of all evil, only to be used when the market couldn’t find a solution. It’s been mind-blowing to explore other schools of thought and realize how simplistic and… well… wrong the ideas are. Hayek, Mises, and Rothbard had me convinced only because they were the only ones I cared to learn from.
I love it how every anti-austrian makes the most vague reasoning for rejecting Austrian econ (almost like they never understood it to begin with.) You never identified with the ideas because you knew they were correct, or could see the reasoning in them being correct, you just wanted like so many others an easy path and an easy enemy you could pit your blame on like every other midwit ideology promotes.
I got a "scholarship" in high school because I was good in history and economics. Catch is I had to attend a place in Alabama.... Sure enough it was a mises institute and was brainwashed for a good year afterwards. Not exactly the best thing to send kids to ideological think tanks in my opinion.
Wait so do you still believe in the Austrian school of thought or no? I hate the slander unless there's something interesting to be said. But even then I find it frustrating people tie a lot of negative views on classical economics and mainstream capitalism and blame it on the austain school and so

Observation: Imagine a country where ONLY business owners have the right to vote. That would be horrible, right? Because what people don't realise, is that is what Capitalism is in practice. Capitalism IS an economic system where businesses owners have the most political power. Whoever controls the stuff the economy needs to run has the ultimate power.
No need to imagine it we're heading there full speed, and it won't be just a country it will be the whole world. Politicians, media and international organizations are but puppets for their "generous donors". Money converts to political power, and those who have more power can manipulate the market to make themselves more money, rinse and repeat.
Russian here. I'm quite aware of how terrible Putin's propaganda is, but what was truly eye opening to me in the last year is how western one isn't much better. Reading resources like 9gag or Reddit I find out many interesting things about myself. Apparently, I've never seen a toilet in my life, have no running water in my house and I have no idea what's Chernobyl or radiation is, despite living in a region that's still considered to be affected by that disaster and thus has a slight social benefits. But most of all, I'm an Orc that's against the concept of freedom on it's own, and who want to kill you personally just because it's fun. I'm currently at the point, where I feel like western propaganda works in tandem with Russian one, to deliberately make common folk hate the west and keep Putin in power. They can't be that competent and incompetent at the same time, can they?
It's manufacturing consent in action. They're doing both the same thing for the same reasons, with the same ends in mind, but varying in the amount of direct coercion they use.
All the things you are talking about seem more like idiotic jokes made for internet points than real propaganda to me. I would look for propaganda into what the press, politicians and influencers (on tv or online) are saying about Russians rather that what some randos are memeing about on the internet. Personally I haven't seen a lot of coverage about the life of Russians civilians here but mostly talk about the military and what is going on in Ukraine. I've heard that a lot of men were forced to serve in the military and I remember one tv news clip where they interviewed people in Moscow. It's seemed pretty divided with a lot of people being pro-putin which were often pretty old and a lot of the younger generations beeing against him even if sometimes they had a hard time saying it clearly, probably for fear of the possible repercussions. Also saw another clip where they went into some stores in Russia to talk about whether Western economic sanctions were working and making life more difficult in Russia. They said that it had a little impact and that there were a few missing or difficult to find products but overall the country economy was still functioning and it was far from collapsing. And those two clips are pretty much the only things I saw about life in russia in over a year as someone who rarely watch tv.
@@zagorim7469 "Toilets" meme was repeated by the head of UN, if my memory serves me right and there were many more "more serious" ones, that I simply didn't want to mention like entire NordStream situation and Putins "gas wars" in general. But even if they're just myths and memes (though many are stated as fact by propaganda, as with washing machines), many people still believe them to be true. As for situation in Russia, I can say that what you've heard is mostly correct. Elder population is scared shitless of returning to 90th, so they would rather cling to devil himself rather then change anything. Younger one is understandably not happy about what's going on, both because government is attacking brotherly nation with which many have online or real friends, or because they don't want to be drafted. Sanctions are harder to evaluate. Many products jumped in price right after the war started by 10-50%, but you can still find many of "western" marks even ones that withdrawed from Russia, like iPhones. Though my point is Russian losses to migration due to war are magnitudes higher then losses of actual life in the war. And migrant aren't everyone, but young adults, mostly with highly sought after professions, like IT. Western officials and media that actively demonizing Russians in general and migrants in particular are actively working for Putin, both supporting his narrative of "West wants to destroy us!" and by preventing brain drain that Russia is currently experiencing. So, obvious question arrives - is that done on purpose?

That's good-- great even, but it's important to limit those trains of thought to some extent.

Lol. Sorry.

You can go to hundreds of sites that will critique any aspect of socialism that you can imagine.
Most of those sites could not even explain the term socialism yet they can create an entire website tearing it down.
For you to come to one of a very few sites that looks at a social society and how it could help, is pretty lazy and pointless of you.
Can you give anyone a definition of socialism?

One of the reasons I love this channel so much you all are able to articulate so perfectly all the things I think but don't have the vocabulary to say
There’s a book called how to hide an empire. The book is more about how Americans celebrate the empire and how it’s taught vs that of the British
I’ve just always really liked that title.
Yeah that was a great book, super interesting and easy to read.
Right
a police force for corporations that just happens to have 800+ overseas military bases, hundreds of times more than all other countries combined.
Economics used to called "Political Economy". Which it still is.

What is Neoliberal?? is a buzzword It has been used so much that its meaning is different, but Not even when it began to be used was there a consensus
I then said, “we had propaganda too.”
My friend from the USA said, “I never noticed any propaganda while growing up.”
And to the last point I picked up an old DDR newspaper from 1972, and it was fascinating that they reported on labor strikes in West Germany and the USA.

Hello sir. Thank you for all the content you share. I appreciate the perspective through which you view topics. Admittedly, I do lean more conservative, yet your channel gives me quite a bit to think on.
Thank you,

I recently found a post in the conservative subreddit, a leftist posted there asking what conservatism can offer the working class, it was very enlightening, much of what the conservative respondents proclaimed are near indistinguishable from what you described in this video as neoliberal propaganda. For as much as conservatives irk me I can't help but pity them after watching this, I get the impression that they fell for this propaganda the hardest and so are convinced that what's not in their best interest is actually good for everyone, I mean it's hard not to feel some sort of pity when you know they're brainwashed.
Link?
How come you're subscribed to based people?
If it makes you feel any better, some of those conservatives know exactly what they're doing.
Thing is, the things you said about conservatives are exactly the same thing they think about you, like brainwashed, fell for propaganda etc.
