Now I know why... after reading the comments about what the song was about, I googled the history of the West and I really regretted having read it and that I only read the content of wikipedia. I think it is one of the most horrifying and unimaginable things possible, it left me with a feeling of hopelessness, fear and repulsion. I recommend thinking twice before reading it....
2:28 that scared expression on his face.... that's amazing! I wonder how did they manage to get the puppet to do such a wide arrange of emotions without lips or eyebrows.
@@kyps1259 Yes, I can feel other emotions, although some of them are rather muted compared to the real thing, but the important ones are there, no worries. If I try to feel love or hate, my mind answers with some sort of weird void, like there was a piece missing there. That doesn't mean I can't care for others, or feel those bonds that form between people, good or bad. I just love them in the way I can.
Idk why but I love that one scene at the end when he’s in the emergency room and the nurse puts her hand against his head on his cheek and he looks over at it. Idk it’s just so sweet.
The Music Video is a lot- it communicates emotions not through the music like most, but through the visuals and the fact that the main character is a puppet, a man who has no control over his own life, and only has aching consciousness. The slight movements of his (Theoretical) eyebrows, anatomically correct muscle flexing on a *puppet,* dilation of his Pupils, artificial yet genuine expressions of concern, and everything. Norman perfects the feeling of surreality.
I fucking love the puppet, he seems like he's supposed to be a normal guy, that's just been so worn down, and confused, that hes just kinda dead, but still physically alive.
I discovered this song about two weeks ago and I still can’t stop listening, I literally have it on the loop dozens of times. I’m in love with the vocalist!! The way he draws out “to take you there” at 3:12 makes my soul leave my body fr
listen to their first four albums in order. everything they did with carlos is peak music. once he left they became soulless. the albums are turn on the bright lights, antics, our love to admire and then interpol (self titled) you will not regret it
Whomever built and animated the puppet is a genius. That close up show from 2:34 to the end of that sequence is so intracate. That's supremely good work. Mad skill.
You can see it frowning throughout the song (especially when it says "Oh heaven restores you in life") and honestly, the eyebrows sell the whole thing. It's almost disturbing how well thought-out his facial expressions are. But what I love most is that, sometimes, the puppet opens its eyes wide, and it looks like it's (re)gaining consciousness, after phasing in and out of it.
But how did the puppet move? Like did someone/people move it manually and they were edited out or was Norman (and his very expressive face) controlled by electronic stuff (idk the word) off camera
Nowadays everyone have different aims, and upcoming nearby future is not so bright or mysterious as it seemed to be before, I think. And all that heavily affects creativity and products for consumers.
I started out being immensely creeped out by the doll and now I just watch in amazement at this marvel of practical and digital special effects (since Norman's handlers were digitally removed). The illusion is total. And now the song's stuck in my head.
I freaked out when I heard it on Orphan First Kill. I haven't heard this song since it came out, I was in high school and I still remember the lyrics! The nostalgia hits hard man
This is exactly me last week! UA-cam just randomly suggested a video with a weird muppet in the thumbnail so I clicked it, and now I cant stop listening to the song a couple times a day and checking out their other songs. The Algorithm strikes again!
Yeah apparently through the video, even though he has little outside injuries he is experiencing internal bleeding and dies in the end after hallucinating dancing on top of the operating table ☹️
I think the concept is how heartbreak has left him feel as if he is no longer alive. But he loves the other person so much, he still feels like he would do anything for her as if he was her puppet.
Actually .... this is apparently references about the serial killer Fred West and his wife Rosemary West. Paul Banks seems to have some fascination with serial killers. The song pretty much is the story of Fred West dealing with the evil he had done, and trying to reach Rosemary twice and failed. And then a few weeks later, he commited suicide.
I hope Norman keeps popping up in random videos. EDIT: After discovering this song three days ago I've come to the conclusion that it's the greatest song ever written and that Norman is the best character in any music video ever made.
Everyone keeps saying how creepy Norman is and I see it too but I also feel like sympathy for him because in a way hes oddly human and all that hes going through just makes him look very vulnerable and I just have this weird feeling of like wanting to protect him, especially in 2:34 when the nurse is holding his head and he just looks up at her with a very human-like look in his eyes. Is it only me that thinks this?
Maybe this is the point of the video, maybe he is supposed to represent a real person but the bad things in him make him inhumane (thus the puppet)? And its made to make you feel sympathy because everyone was innocent at one point?
The animatronic work on Norman is insanely well done. I keep coming back to just marvel at every movement he makes. The man who made him, Carl White, is actually a professor at Carnegie Mellon University so he's clearly well versed in what he does.
@@kaitlynjohanson7517 From what I searched, not quite as "normal" looking as Norman, but he definitely has other works. This has become one of my favourite songs in the past 2 years, because I listened to it and watched the video on repeat during a very dark time of my life. I was suffering from anorexia and a very turbulent family life. This song and video spoke to me, and I don't know why. Thank you Interpol for expressing something for me that was inexpressible.
I know my comment may never be seen, but as someone who also had an eating disorder, I can relate to the same feeling this song helps awaken. My eating disorder started in 7th grade back in 2009, and it started as a form of anorexia of sorts. Then in 2015, it got worse again. I was only eating one “vegan” meal a day at 5 am, and then nothing else. Then I’d force myself to walk one hour a day, every day, then do yoga and weightlifting for an hour. It was very painful. It was anxiety every hour of every day. I was so afraid of food and so afraid of my body. But I’ll never forget how painstakingly aware I was. I felt super human, ignoring my basic human functions and not eating for a prolonged amount of time, but still somehow alive anyway. All the colors of the world were so bright, so vibrant. Every smell, every sound, all my senses were on high. That was something I miss the most from being sick, feeling that hyper awareness and feeling so “alive,” so super human, even though my physical body was breaking down. I felt so superior but also so invisible and alone. Truly “weightless” and “exotic,” “needing something in which to care.”
They filmed the last 'scene' in a real hospital. "Sorry Mr Wilson, we're gonna have to postpone your emergency surgery. We need to stabilize this puppet, stat!"
Huge special effects geek here, came here to see Norman in action after seeing his restoration, stayed for killer music. Honestly, I get how Norman skeeves some people out, but I can't help but love the little guy. His expressions are so stunningly lifelike. Incredible to think he was made nearly twenty years ago. ❤
It's such an achievement when the video makes the song better and the song makes the video better. Kudos to the band and the team that made the video ...exceptional work.
Interpol has many great songs, Evil is great but there are so many great songs they have, Turn on the Bright Lights, their debut album, is considered their greatest and was a game-changing classic album in 2002, definitely listen to that, Evil is off their second album, Antics, also really great.
Accurate description, hahaha. This song always makes me a little sad because I had tickets to Depeche Mode with Interpol opening. I was super excited about both bands but my stupid boyfriend at the time insisted on a long dinner before and made us late. I could hear this song playing (the show was at an outdoor venue) as we waited in line to get in. It was the last song they played, so alas. I did not get to see Interpol that night. Depeche Mode was amazing though!
I'm really glad to see i'm not the only one who struggled more with the premise of the music video rather than Norman. Personally I really enjoy Norman- can understand how he's off-putting to others- but listening to the lyrics and witnessing the 'everyday' situations he was put in; breaks me down a lot. I'm aware of what the lyrics were really based around, but this song makes me think more of our limited existence, our mortality and (how I really liked another commentor described it): *aching consciousness* . When he's going through all these situations, it's flying by so fast Norman can hardly keep up- reminding us about how quick life in general goes by, and on top of that showing how easily it can be plucked in the blink of an eye; almost like a car crash. I really enjoy this song, but I struggle with it. TL;DR : *"All it takes is one bad day to ruin the rest."*
This song goofed with my head a good bit when it came out and I was about 13 or 14. I had to watch it so many times to really figure out why the morose nature just got to me. Why was he dying? He looked fine, right? Well, I'm a paramedic now and I see how well they altered his appearance to make him look like he was hemodynamically compromised: the blueish skin, the diaphoresis, and the tired expression. It's a weird sense of closure, but here we are.
@@CasperWasHere118 I believe that's what they were implying. Given his blueish color, diaphoretic appearance and such, I'd say they were trying to shoe him bleeding out from the inside.
Now I keep seeing that everyone's talking about "Oh when I was a kid I watched this!" or "My Sibling/Parents watched this and i've been listening ever since." But when I watch this. It makes me think about how this man faces no punishment, think about it he's a drunk driver and yet he suffer no major injuries and yet the other person is on the brink of death. I love how this song portrays unfairness of our world.
It's the angel of death coming for some lady in prison or at least that's what I always thought, idk tho I know the lyrics it's jus very complex or poetic, these older rock bands used to have wicked song schemes
It's implied that he suffers from internal bleeding. He may have died in the vidoe when he starts dancing on the operating table but there are many theories about this vidoe. Another thoery about the vidoe is about surviours guit but I don't think it's implied that the puppet is a drunk driver and doesn't show who's at fault just the aftermath of a horrible accident.
i think the puppet is really cute honestly. his eyes are really pretty, and the sheer expressiveness of his face is really cool to see! this video really makes you feel for him, like. i wanna wrap him in a blanket and give him a cup of coffee or something, make him feel better lol
I would sneak downstairs as a child to record music channels so I could discover new music the next day (it helped that I could skip ads). This was the music video & song that got me. I also remember being captivated by Arcade Fire’s “Power Out.” I am happy to say I got to see these guys live on so many occasions. They are one of the best bands of all time for me. I’ll never stop loving their music. I also like Red Lights (not because of Amsterdam).
@@SCARx497 yeah - & Paul Banks can speak Spanish too - I always envied that. I always wanted to see him in Spain for that reason 😂 (he estudiado español).

Been listening to this song for looong time. Way before the go fund me or whatever. This song got me back into shape started skating again after an 8 year hiatus. The song is so touching even though it’s about the husband/wife serial killers. Kinda humanizes them. Interpol has that kind of a skill
My daughter used to sing this song to me. That was years ago. A little over a year ago she took her own life. It's hard to listen to this without hearing her voice 💔
Nic Jensen ~ hearing your story is chilling, as this song can have a certain soothing effect on depression, anxiety, and mood disorders generally. I don’t know your daughter’s reasons, but my heart breaks at your loss. It makes me think more than twice about idle thoughts of giving up that I have entertained over the decades. My last birthday wish in December was to simply to not give up, and my mindset is improving. Anyway, your candor about your experience gives perspective to those of us who struggle, that it’s not just about our pain, but the pain of those we leave behind, too. 💛
I listened to this song in loops when I was in a not so happy place. It helped me a lot because this song express something I could not put I to words. One of my favorite song ever, it has such a special place in my heart and I love Norman dearly.
Same here. I first heard it when I was in the ER after a head/back injury. It gave me a few minutes of coping with indescribable pain. Prayers for you homie! I hope you come out of that unhappy place and find happiness/health!
I remember being mesmerized as a kid watching this music video on MTV, I'm so happy to be brought up the way I was and the time period I got to come into sentience in, definitely shaped my interest in music and the range of music I listen to, early 2000's music gives me such nostalgia and good vibes 💕

@@JoseMorales-hq7mm It's about a married couple, both serial killers. The song is taking the husband's perspective, it talks about all the feelings she had for her, even if she was as messed up as he was. The song that started my Interpol addiction! Omg it's been a while since i've heard this and it's still as good now as it was then! The most brilliant, unique voice I think i've heard too - unmistakeable
I like to imagine that Norman has a soul, but he just cant move himself in his current state. He was at the peak of his creation singing in the video with all his makeshift heart. And now he's just being rebuilt. I would like to imagine normal one day waking up and seeing himself without any cuts or bruises or stuff like that.
That's actually a reasonably impressive puppet, okay yeah it's creepy, but it's also just plain fascinating to watch in my opinion. Oh yeah and I almost forgot to mention... thanks for the new earworm.
There is a part in the video on where I can see a sweet gaze on the puppet's face! One of my kids is kind of afraid to this video, but even that, he really likes to watch it.
To be honest, I have no freaking clue what the song is about or any of the lyrics except a couple, yet this is one of the most emotional songs and brings back alot of memories from a very complex time
It’s about Fred and Rose (full name rosemary- the first word of the song) who were a married couple of serial killers. All of their victims were young women and they raped, tortured, and killed over 10 young women. Horrific. If you listen to the lyrics knowing this back story it begins to make a lot more sense

@@staidanom Also if you look close enough at the eyes, the pupils dilate either from light or consciousness.
But how did the puppet move? Like did someone/people move it manually and they were edited out or was Norman (and his very expressive face) controlled by electronic stuff (idk the word) off camera

@Yordanny Del Valle oh I know that dude. Doesn't mean we can't interpret it in different ways
hope your doing well mate
It has the same effect on me. To be fair it's a song about trauma ans bodily harm so maybe that's it. Wishing you all the happiness and health, homie!

So he was dying of internal bleeding?
@@CasperWasHere118 I believe that's what they were implying. Given his blueish color, diaphoretic appearance and such, I'd say they were trying to shoe him bleeding out from the inside.

Or do shudders pass in the night?
Rosemary
Oh, heaven restores you in life
I spent a lifespan with no cellmate
The long way back
Sandy, why can't we look the other way?
You're weightless, semi-erotic
You need someone to take you there
Sandy, why can't we look the other way?
Why can't we just play the other game?
Why can't we just look the other way?
Thank you I can't watch this video because that puppet scares the hell out of me
@Jester noooo dude Norman is too skrunkly you can’t be scared of him :(
@@-The_Jester- He’s just a sad guy who got in an accident. He’s not going to hurt you.
@@BreadlySteadly well I've been watching this for a while now and he's starting to grow on me
@@BreadlySteadly He's also singing from the perspective of a serial killer to his serial killer wife
I wonder how interpol reacted to norman being brought back from the dead
@@megalo7058 haha idk but I bet normans like I ALWAYS COME BACK hahaha
Ummm, what the f**k?
Ngl thats a little creepy.
@@megalo7058 I read that on a video of his restoration, the dude tried reaching out to the band multiple times but they didn't seem to care
That's actually a reasonably impressive puppet, okay yeah it's creepy, but it's also just plain fascinating to watch in my opinion.
Oh yeah and I almost forgot to mention... thanks for the new earworm.
It's not a real puppet, it's CGI.
ekklesiast of course it is a puppet
There is a part in the video on where I can see a sweet gaze on the puppet's face!
One of my kids is kind of afraid to this video, but even that, he really likes to watch it.
I didn't find him creepy yet. He's just impressive.
He grows on you 😁
2:29 For some reason that face really makes me feel a weird combo of empathy and sadness. Poor guy looks to distraught.
The Painted Skull Same i be feeling so bad
The puppet may be creepy, but he looks kinda cute there tbh
He looks so unsure of how his surgery’s going to go and he’s scared of that
Interpol nos vemos en el Zócalo, saludos desde México, 2024 ❤
To be honest, I have no freaking clue what the song is about or any of the lyrics except a couple, yet this is one of the most emotional songs and brings back alot of memories from a very complex time
It’s about two serial killers that were a couple
It’s about Fred and Rose (full name rosemary- the first word of the song) who were a married couple of serial killers. All of their victims were young women and they raped, tortured, and killed over 10 young women. Horrific.
If you listen to the lyrics knowing this back story it begins to make a lot more sense
Ha
@@rodentsofrandomness9203 I forgot who, but one of them killed themselves and the other spent life in prison. There’s a line in this song that references it
Edit: I found it. It’s the line “spent a lifetime with no cellmate”
@@cashsoutdoorchronicles yep it was Fred. hung himself with the bedsheets in jail awaiting his trial.
“Hey whose on trial” is such a cheeky line in context.
