Another youtuber just used a thin piece of cardboard folded into a U shape. This was done for the front door, because as you pointed out accessing the rear bolt is far deeper. I found that out when replacing the rear door handle. Even with a magnetic hex driver, I still managed to lose the bolt and had to remove the inner door cover .. a 5 minute job that turned into about 2 hours. I really like the PVC tube idea. Brilliant!
Thanks for the great video. I dreaded taking the car in to the shop to fix it. So, I ordered the handle and the replacement went pretty smooth. The PVC pipe was a smart idea.
Thanks. My wife painted and clear coated the door handle to match. Since this was the front passenger door, I didn’t need an extension. Just used the driver with an 8mm socket. Used a small magnet between the driver and the socket and the replacement took a couple minutes. The rear doors require an extension for the ratchet. I have an 09 with 234,000 miles and all the handles except for the driver’s have been replaced. This was a helpful refresher video for me.
Thanks for the nice comments. You're lucky to have a wife that can do the painting. I didn't even try. I wound up replacing all of the handles and they kinda looked ok being the same black color. Smart idea using the small magnet. Hope you have a blessed holiday season. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.
Thank you so much. My handle just broke this morning. I thought I would have to take it to get repaired until I watched your video. This is wonderful. Have a great day!
Well done. I also got a black handle on eBay and paint with clearcoat on the web. I hung the doorhandle using a piece of thread on a tree branch and spun it around to do the spray painting and the clearcoat. This technique worked like a charm. I had to use plenty of clearcoat to get it close to the clearcoat finish on the car.
If you don’t got any pvc pipe laying around like me, I was able to do this by rolling up a piece of paper and taping it to catch the bolt, worked just fine but the pvc woulda definitely been better. Great guide
Thanks. Good idea on the rolling up the paper. You just gave me an idea. I'll bet you could also use the cardboard roll from inside a roll of toilet paper or tin foil. Just cut it long ways and roll it up to the diameter you would need. Hope you have a blessed day.
PVC tube not really needed on my 2009 Sonata. Bolt is long enough and sits in a deep nylon threaded hole so that if you undo the bolt just enough to remove the outer piece, it will stay in the threaded hole with little risk of coming out. I found the tube just made it hard to get the socket on the bolt. Otherwise, thanks for the help. Turned out to be as simple as you showed.
Thanks for your help. I’ve got a new handle on the way. In the meantime I just moved the handle from my back door to the driver side so I can at least get in. Same procedure on the driver side despite the lock on the handle.
Glad this was helpful. I did the same thing when the passenger side front door handle broke. It is so annoying not having the handle work. After the second handle broke off, I replaced them all.
Nice vid i just replaced 2 handles. However that pipe concept is not necessary. You just need to push on this 8mm screw and replace the handle while holding/pushing the screw so it doesnt go down. Wrench socket needs to be ducktaped for safety. Thx.
You saved me so much money, I had 3 handles break off my Haundai, drivers side handle is only one that hasn't broke "yet" so I bought one for when it does too.... Lol ... Thank you so much ....
great post took 5 mins to replace handle! I saved my uncle a ton of money hyundai told him they would have to remove door panel to replace lol @ $100.00 labor!!! And i like your piece of PEX pipe hugh time saver!!
Thanks! Great idea with the pipes! Shoulda watched this video first... I dropped the driver side lock bolt in the door. Not worth taking the door apart to find it, so I'm gonna buy a new bolt at the hardware store. Also, it seems like once one plastic part breaks in this car, all of them do in rapid succession. Cheap plastic, I guess. Both driver side handles, various interior components, and the plastic part that attaches the cable for the door elevator mechanisms for the two rear windows all broke within a month or two of each other.
Hi Dave. Cardstock...that's a great idea! You got me to thinking. I wonder if you could also use the cardboard tube from a roll of toilet paper? You'd just have to cut it long ways and roll it up to fit in the hole. Hope you have a blessed day.
Thanks! Excellent video, no issues replacing handle.... Bought Duplicolor spray paint at O'Reilly's for perfect match. Also used plastic adhesion Promotor and clear coat...
Glad the video was helpful. I left the handles black. I'm not a paint guy. But, I might give it a try on your recommendation for O'Reilly's and the clear coat. Thanks.
You make this look so easy i will give it a try haa i am so nervous doing this but your video here is awesome an i picked the part up for 6 bucks haaa thanks so much.....
Glad it helped. I wish I could remember the guy whose video I watched where I got the idea...so, I could give him credit. It's sure a lot easier than accidentally losing the bolt down into the door. Before I put the PVC in, I was trying to figure out what size the socket was, and I knocked it off the extension when pulling it out...my door has a socket in it now. I've learned my lesson. When I now have to put a socket deep into something, I tape it to the extension so it can't come off.
The PVC pipe is genius. I used a piece of thin cardboard to catch the screw when I changed my car's handle but I was worried about it flexing and losing the screw. This solves that concern.
What tool is that you used for the bolt? The name is on the top of my tongue but I can’t think and where did you get the pipe? What size bolt remover did you use
Thank you for the this tutorial! I was able to replace my door handle and it was very easy, but unfortunately the 8mm screw fell out when I removed the cardboard tube that I used. I was having troubles screwing it back in so when I thought it was good, it also came out when I pulled out the tube. Sure wish I had that PVC tube. Anyways, any suggestions on where I can get that exact 8mm screw?
I'm glad that the video was helpful. I also lost one of the screws the first time I tried this, before using the PVC tube. I went to our local You-Pull-It salvage yard and got a screw off of a Sonata they had in the yard. I've also looked up part numbers on hyundaipartsdeal.com from time to time. If you enter the car information and go to trim then front door locking, they have a picture of the door parts with the screw. I would think you could take the picture to a Hyundai/Kia dealer and they could get you the screw. Hope this helps and you have a blessed day. Hello. I also replaced the handle on the driver side door that had the lock. I wish I could remember back exactly how it worked. But, I know that I didn't have a problem. It loosened up enough for the handle to come off, and then put the new handle on.
I'm about to do this as both my rear handles are broken. Is the bolt not ferrous? Could I not just use a magnet in the socket instead of some PVC that I will likely never use again?
Hi Justin. I'm not sure if the bolts are ferrous or not. That is a good question. A couple weeks ago, TW made this comment: "Nice vid i just replaced 2 handles. I have a 2009 Hyundai Sonata. Both exterior and interior door handles are broke on the drivers side door . I can't open the door. What is the best way to cut out the door panel to unlock the door and replace the handles?
Sorry, but I have no idea how to help. I tried using a coat hanger to open the door, sliding it down the window, but couldn't get it to open. I can get the plastic off from around the interior door handle. There is one screw holding the plastic on. Maybe you could take this off and have some room to get something in the door to pull on the mechanism to unlock it.
