I can only imagine how loud that horn sounded with their heads under the hood. Ouch.

    • @retroguy9494
      @retroguy9494 2 місяці тому

Yea well, don't. It was a sound effect and not the actual car horn under the hood.
A special car was built for use on the sound stage for filming. A real 1955 Pontiac was used for the long shots around the country as they were taking the trip and was filmed by a crew Desi sent out and using doubles for the four of them. The actors never left the studio.
In fact, if you look closely where the camera does a close up of Lucy behind the wheel, you will see the car has no windshield! LOL

That was the actual car horn. No musical instrument can duplicate that sound. Moreover, watch Lucy’s hands as she pushes the wheel twice. It’s improbable at best that an off camera sound effect would be perfectly in sync with her movements.
The cars they used on set were modified for the stage (windshield removed to prevent reflection of crew and equipment) but the horn and other parts of the car were left intact.

@@julietteyork6293 Yes, of course it was the actual car horn. But it wasn't inside the engine compartment of the car. It was rigged by the sound man. I've read all about that 1955 Pontiac and the mock up they used on the sound stage at Desilu. It was specially built. It wasn't a standard model off the assembly line that was modified. Actual models WERE used for all the footage on the road as they traveled across the country in the various episodes. But that was all done by a second unit crew using doubles for Ricky, Lucy, Fred and Ethel. In reality, the actors never left the studio, even for the footage of the car in Hollywood!
As for the timing of when Lucy pushed the horn on the steering wheel, Lucy was a perfectionist. Each episode was rehearsed SIX times between Tuesday and Friday afternoon before filming in front of the studio audience on Friday night. If, at any time, something was not right, they would rehearse that segment over and over until it was right. So it IS in fact possible that the sound man could time the horn with Lucy's pushing the button to perfection.

First you stated it wasn’t the actual car horn. When I pointed out it was, you agreed.😏
As to the placement/location of the horn, please post the citation you’re referencing. I’d like to read it.

@@julietteyork6293 That's not what I said at all. If you go back and read my original comment, which you will note has NOT been edited, what I said was ' It was a sound effect and not the actual car horn UNDER THE HOOD.' If you leave out a portion of a sentence, it changes the meaning in its entirety.
So, yes, it was a real car horn. But it was NOT under the hood so the loudness did not affect the actors. It's Hollywood. It was all special effects.
As for the citation, I can't post it. I've been a fan of this show since I was 6 or 7 and I turn 60 this year. Since I was in high school, I've collected many books on the show. I've also read literally dozens of web sites that deal with the show. I simply don't remember the actual source as I just retained so much information in my head.
I'm a car guy and I own a couple antiques myself.
What I can tell you is that Desi made a deal with General Motors. Part of that deal was that the show would promote the brand new 1955 Pontiac Star Chief. It was a brand new model that year with a new better and more powerful V8 engine which replaced the old 'straight eight.'. This is the reason why Fred asked about the horsepower, automatic transmission, etc. It was product placement advertising. It's also the reason why, in the episode where Lucy wanted to be in a movie and Desi tries to talk her out of it and to go sightseeing, instead of saying 'you have a brand new car' he says 'you have a brand new Pontiac to take you there.' As a car guy I was fascinated by how they shot the episodes with both the Pontiac AND the 1923 Cadillac touring car. For the few closeups of the cars actually moving with the actors behind the wheel, which, as I said, were shot on the sound stage in front of the studio audience, a series of cables were hooked to the cars and moved them across the stage. To run the actual engines could have asphyxiated everyone. Therefore, as I said, a special car was constructed for use on the sound stage. Special effects were then used.
It may interest you to know that the REAL Pontiac Star Chief that was used with the doubles sold at auction 10 years ago for $220.000.

Desi had singed a deal with Pontiac part of which was to promote the new 1955 Pontiac Star Chief which is why, in this episode, he was mentioning the horsepower and other features of the car.
In addition, as part of the deal, the shows writers got new Pontiac's for 2 years.
Both Desi and Lucy however, drove Cadillacs during this period. Lucy's was a 1955 yellow convertible and I think Desi's was a 1952 or 53 hardtop.

@@Tsumami__ I didn't get the information from Wikipedia. I got it from BOOKS. I've been collecting books on Desi & Lucy, Desilu, I Love Lucy, etc. for almost the last 40 years. Since I was in college anyway back in the mid '80's. Long before Wikipedia or even the internet. Some of the books I bought had just been published.
Somewhere around here in a book I even have a picture of Desi's Cadillac. It was blue if I recall correctly.

Who? People from New England and also the Midwest. The only difference is HOW it's done. People in New England put a slice of cheddar cheese on top of the pie while it's still hot.
People from the Midwest bake the cheddar cheese into the crust to form a cheesy pastry base to compliment the apple filling.

The whole story arc of buying the cars and going to California always makes me irritated with the Mertzes when I get to that point in the series when re-watching over the years. Ricky and Lucy are so generous to the Mertzes over their friendship, despite Fred being their older landlord and not vice versa, and then after Ricky pays for their whole trip out there, the whole stay, dinners, etc., they can’t even be bothered to pay for their own ticket to get home and get mad at Ricky for selling his own car? It always irks me so much lol.
