  • When are your tyres worn out legally and for safety? That is what this video covers. I had a great opportunity to compare a new and 8000-mile-old tyre of the same model! I do notice when editing that the tread pattern is not quite the same, I guess they updated the moulds.

    I change the car tyres when I think they wont pass an MOT. I change a bikes tyres as soon as I notice a change in the handling regardless of how much "life" might be left in them.

    Surprised you didn't go into the markings that tell you how old a tyre is, or how old is too old. I've seen bellends at local bike meets happily riding on 15+ year old rubber.

    I've shamefully got to nearly the minimum on my Pirelli Angel GT2 tyres. They're getting swapped this Saturday.

    My first bike I got in 2019 and it hadn't had an MOT since 2006. The tyres were still legal tread wise but I noticed some minor perishing. Then I checked the dot codes for the age and one was from 1995 and the other was 1997. Needless to say they were changed with it's first MOT with me before it went out on the road. There's no way I was riding on tires that old

    Front tyres virtually never get squared off. They wear at the sides making the profile more of a V than a nice radius. Rears will always square off on road bikes and generally only last half as long as a front

    Hi Spicy - great video. I’m approaching the need to change my rear tyre on my Guzzi 850: where could I go to get the tyre fitted and balanced near Portsmouth please? This is my first tyre change in years.

      @spicy110  2 місяці тому +2

      I have used Protyre in the past, the one in portsmouth, 468 London Rd, Hilsea, PO2 9RN. I have only used them 2-3 times ever as I tend to do it myself and the last time was a while ago but they have been great those times. Not the cheapest but when I went fitting price was fair.

    I had odd tyres on my bike when I got it. The front was getting low. Rear had about 4mm. I changed both as rear was 6 years old and compound felt very stiff. New tyres were like night and day, even for a new rider like myself.

    When my bike goes in for a service I'm going to get them to change my tyres not because there warn but my tyres are more off roading tires for green laneing but I mostly use it to comute to work so I'll ask them to put road tyres on hopefully I can get road tyres for 21 inch front and 18 inch rear.

    Probably stupid question but theres a couple of tyre wear descriptions that although i read/hear about them i can't describe them, or know what I'm looking or feeling for..
    cupping and scalloping..?
    What are they? What causes them? What do these look like?

    • @spicy110
      @spicy110  2 місяці тому +1

      That would depend on what area of the tyre it is on. Scalloping can happen on the edge of a tyre if the chain is hitting it. You would think it might strip the edge off in an even way but due to it being timed to the sprockets and the pins that stick out of the chain. You end up with an edge that goes in and out. Like the edge of a scallop shell.

    • @spicy110
      @spicy110  2 місяці тому +1

      @@Jimb0b1111 Maybe slow your roll a little there, I talk from experience, Indeed I have even had it happen. I was very specific in what area I was talking about and said "can happen" If you ask supermoto riders you will get the same answer. It is common on supermotos to use a wider than stock rear tyre. In some cases the chain can just catch the edge of the tyre scallop cutting the edge. So no I am not making shit up, you just did not know that.

      most of your hard acceleration and braking is done upright, plus motorway miles make flat spots. Though flat band might be a better term.

    Personally, I don't like riding with a plug in a tyre and would have changed it asap,but I have known people who have or put a tube in the tyre to get their monies worth out of it. As to chicken strips it is complete BS you can wear them off by doing low speed manoeuvres in a car park they are not a sign of a good rider.

      The reason I had the first one was getting a puncher really fast after they were fitted. Then I was inundated with all sorts of opinions on it. That is why I spent 3 years testing them and this was the outcome. Still 100% get this will likely not change your opinion, in fact I am not trying to do that, but it is interesting to see some facts. ua-cam.com/video/2l59fNBq-Tc/v-deo.htmlsi=rgvzRK3S3DpNtN28
