  • In this video I make a kalimba out of beech wood. I tried to make it completely out of wood. As springs I tried various wood alternatives but I decided that I liked beech springs the most!

    Jointer planer: amzn.to/2IQZ3WR

Your ingenuity is amazing. You must be close to a full orchestra by now. Great as usual.

It would make interesting movie soundtracks! Love it (as usual)!😊

Yet another really enjoyable instrument build and another for the SWC Orchestra. Incidentally Dimitris, I'd say the ten euros you spent on that little red plane was the best money you ever spent!

Thanks Mark! It was actually 5euros I think! And indeed it is my favorite hand tool! ;)

Very nice - I've made some instruments using metal tines, just wondered if you'd tried making one with thinner bracing / no bracing. Also, metal tines are thinned by about 1/2 at the base, this is to tune overtones, but it also makes them much more resonant, I imagine the same is true for wooden ones. I'd love to hear it played with dowels made of something hard and springy and with enough mass to drive the sound. If you haven't already come across this, I really recommend 'Musical Instrument Design' by Bart Hopkin, he deals with kalimbas, and everything else, with a great deal of thoroughness! Anyway, a lovely build which has inspired me to get back to one of my half finished projects. Cheers!

      Hey Carl
i make African Padauk marimbas and yes your right when the overtones are tuned there's an awesome 3hz variance that's attained and super pleasant sounding i also use purpleheart for xylo's and want to experiment with other tropical hardwoods as well. Its a joy to make these instruments and make music from wood I ve made several tongue drums too there fun but all these instruments take an immense amount of time and patience it takes me 3 months and 300hrs for a 2 octave marimba.
      Kind regards
      Levi

The sound of the kalimba reminds me of the Ghibli movies Totoro and spirited away.

@@ScrapwoodCity Ther are sounds in both movies which sound similar to the deeper notes on the kalimba and i was emediatly reminded of these. Have you watched them? The sounds i think of are in the scenes where totoro or big creatures apear.
