I'm also just starting Hour Building and 100% understand about needing to build confidence. The sudden freedom, and sense of the potential for error seems much bigger than within the confines of a PPL. Good plan to fly with someone. If you think about how much you are talking to your copilot in this flight, and the reassurances and checks he's also doing, its fantastic but also a reminder, for me at least, of the absence of that when solo. I think its just this initial hump of probably 10 hrs to get through. You had a great service from ATC and they were also keeping you safe. Great video to watch; I've been sat with the 1:500 chart following your route, instead of studying ATPL GNAV, but this was seems more immediately applicable than departure distance calculations!

Thank you for your comments. I think the first few hours post PPL are potentially a hazardous zone. Rather than go straight into longer cross country flights and following the Magenta line on SkyDemon, I think it's really important to consolidate the learning from the PPL and build confidence in your ability to navigate without GPS. I wonder how many pilots get ahead of themselves and get into trouble by not preparing in this manner, so I felt this video has an important point to get across. I'm glad you appreciate it, so thanks! Good luck with the study. I have a friend who has just completed his ATPLs and it was a long road!

Nice video Chris. Interesting to hear your conversations as you gain confidence. Enjoy the freedom and the hour building.

Thanks Tim. I feel the initial 10 hours or so after PPL is a potential danger zone, so really important to be absolutely confident in the basics before getting ahead of oneself. There must be so many pilots who get their PPL and then do too big a flight too soon!

@@CJThePilot You’re right on that, I’ve got about 80 hours of instruction and I’m not a commercial pilot (I dropped out) but the training was invaluable. My wife and I have a 7 hour flight back home in the morning from KNYL to KKLS, 917nm in the old Mooney. Half the flight will be over or through the smoke/haze from the California wildfires.

Wow that is a long trip, but in the Mooney that must have been an enjoyable flight. Flying during the wildfires is brave, I'm guessing you had a long list of possible alternatives en route and arrived safely?

@@CJThePilot 14.5 hours on the tach, 1851nm overall and arrived home safe. The thing with the smoke is you have to be ready to turn around and/or fly above. I got caught in imc smoke a couple times last year and learned my lesson (the 2nd time). We made it within an hour of home but there was 100 miles of thunderstorms remaining. Landed, got a hotel, perfect weather the next morning for the last little bit.

17:30 G-BOTI is one of the aircraft operated by my flight school out of Exeter. I like it when people fly around where I’m familiar with. Nice video!

Yeah, Josh liked the reg! Is that Aviation South West? I did my first flying experience with them in one of the PA38s 👍

@@CJThePilot The ATC are lovely and very helpful! They're very rarely too busy to give you a service since Flybe went bust...
