Someone who gets me, holy shit. I'm gonna be honest Sky Chase Zone from Sonic Adventure is probably my favorite rendition of the plane gimmick, all classic and modern games included.
I don't get how MS act 1 is better than SC, they're literally the same except MS act 1 has the 15 second train moment. It's terrible and honestly makes me wanna play Knuckles' route JUST to avoid MS act 1.

After watching this video (yes I realize I’m more than a few years late, I just re-entered my sonic phase) I decided to buy this game. And I’d just like to say that no review ever made could possibly convey the pure and absolute joy I felt in playing this game. I only ever encountered one or two parts where I got annoyed, and even then I knew it was my fault and not the games. The game was made with more love and passion than I could’ve ever imagined. From the returning mechanics, the countless references and easter eggs, the music, the gameplay, the art, and the almost completely bug-less run through, you could tell… no… you could FEEL the passion these devs felt in making this game. (And by almost bug-less, I mean I literally can’t even remember the only bug that happened because it was so insignificant and didn’t ever happen again) Everything they did in this game was so faithful to what Sonic represents, without just simply falling back on nostalgia to sell copies. When I played old zones and recognized old mechanics, they didn’t feel old at all, in fact, they felt like a completely new and different experience from what they originally were. And by god the controls were so smooth, I never felt like I was getting screwed over by level design or by slippery/clunky controls. The difficulty surprised me, as I consistently felt challenged but not to the extent to where I was frustrated with it. (I was never very good at the genesis games so that’s why I had difficulty.) Overall, I can’t stress enough how fantastic this game is, and how much praise these devs deserve for giving us this absolute fucking masterpiece. 100/10
Yeah, and there's so many references and surprises that even though I spoiled myself on a few thumbnails and videos waiting for the PC release, it still felt like a blind playthrough. I don't find it as replayable as others do, but it was a really fun experience regardless. Looking forward to Evening Star's next game

I love Sonic Mania. But I think what makes it so sweet is the bitterness developed along the way. If they released a game just like it after 3/Knuckles I don't think it would be as awesome

8:12 Huh I've played through this game 5 times and not once have I seen that part on the final boss. Completely new to me.

On the topic of those bosses. I have a hunch they were unused bosses, so instead of scrapping them entirely they just added them into the final boss.
Always thought the Hard Boiled Heavies could've been used more. They don't constantly appear like Knuckles in 3.

Ok guys. You know the thing Cybershell was saying about being able to use every ability? You can! Go to the level select screen, (at the title screen, press *up up, down down, up up up up* to activate level select. You need to do it after Sonic appears, but before the *press any button to begin* appears. go to no save, put on debug mode, select any other options, but make sure debug mode is on. Then start the game and hold square on PS4, don’t know about any other console.) then put into the sound test 9001. That lets you use every ability at once! Also, 6124 lets you disable Super Music, meaning that you can still listen to level themes while Super!
This sounds so farfetched and school playground rumor that it's probably true. I mean look at the amount of secret shit that Sonic 2 or Sonic CD have

In Press Garden Act 1 there is a point pretty far into the Act that falling to the very bottom, you'll find yourself in a pit with two Splat jars on both sides. If you stand against the wall, they likely won't be able to hit you and they'll just keep spawning. Spin dash back and forth and let them spawn a bit and keep it up, you'll get to either 10,000 or 100,000 points on each badnik (can't remember right now) and it's a good way to farm 1-ups. You can also get a lamp post right before then so if you time out? Who gives a shit, go get yourself 30 more lives
The music ended up being my favorite part of playing this game. The levels were incredible, the bosses were great, but the music is the binding force for everything. It almost makes up for the missing transitions because everything flows SO WELL.
Sonic Mania is a miracle of a game! Something like this won't happen again for a long time (unless we get lucky twice).

Im surprised with the amount of Chaotix references in Mania, I feel like one of the bigger standouts is Encore Mode, which is actually quite similiar if you think about it.
(Getting your partner back uses a similiar animation, all characters are playable, different time of day in Encore levels, etc.)
Even the Blue ring makes an appearance, now all I wish is a possible remaster or sequel to Chaotix & Knuckles since it flopped the first time around.
You should look at all the unused stuff. People actually got it all to function correctly, too.
Simply put for anyone who's like me and has to rush the video do to being late for work, Mania is a love letter to long time Sonic fans who happen to be that much into the series and all its cut content, like many of us are. A game by fans for fans is how one could phrase it.
As much as I love this game, and I love it... I wish there were more Sonic 1 levels that were added/revised. Marble Zone and Starlight Zone from Sonic 1 would have been great; those are two of my favorite.

ya know...I agree with you on the transformation part, Cybershell. I always thought it would be interesting to see new transformations. maybe incorporate the aspects of the elemental shield your character had active at the time into the transformation...so that, instead of going super, they would transform into an elemental form based on the shield that they were using.

6:09 to hell with Izuka. He didn't design any of the original characters, And I doubt he came up with the concept of a transformation for sonic. Just because he's the current head of sonic team, does not make him the Word of God on sonic lore, at least in my eyes. This guy made some really questionable decisions with sonic, so it's doubtful that he has any good reason for hating the super emeralds.
They need Yuji Naka to come back. It's not really even Sonic Team any more.
He was one 5th of the original sonic team, but I don't think too much of him either. He'd act like a rock star back in the day, and had kind of an ego, but that's fine, I mean when you help make sonic, you get to be a bit cocky. When he decided to screw over the development of Sonic Xtreme, that's when I lost respect for him.
You see, he didn't want to lend them an engine, unbeknownst to the developers who used it in their development of the game, as they were desperate for an engine, and already effectively worked like slaves. This act, to me shows that he symbolically cut ties with the IP, as this game might have been a saving grace for the franchise at the time, and he refused to help. He threatened to leave the company if they went ahead with using this engine, and just like that the project was cancelled. I doubt he'd want to come back, and I personally wouldn't want someone that toxic to work on sonic again.

You share a lot of the same sentiments as me, and I like that you don't sugarcoat your opinions and that you aren't afraid to say what you don't like about every game. We all know the Sonic series has flaws and we shouldn't act like it doesn't. Also, Sonic 3 & Knuckles is my favorite game of all time, from the gameplay, to the level transitions, and of course, my favorite video game soundtrack ever. Id love to see Mania 2 but I'd love even more to see a "Mania" game for another Sega Franchise would be great, Golden Axe, Shinobi, Altered Beast, Crazy Taxi, Jet Set Radio, Nights, Panzer Dragoon, Sega Rally, if these guys were put in charge of any of these franchises I'm sure we would have something as great as Mania.

I thought I would be okay with a "no lives" type, but having that in Sonic Forces gave me such a feeling of revulsion over it that I realized I can't play sonic games without the lives system.
Absolutely loved the game, I had all your gripes plus one more (and it was a big one for me). The first time playing the last level - Titanic Monarch - I was extremely lost and had no clue what was going on, my second play-through I realized what was going on... You have to go through the 4 teleporters and find their own teleporter at the end of their section to open the main central teleporter, all while avoiding teleporters throughout the 4 mini-levels..... really? ....REALLY?! That totally makes sense I suppose.
It would have made WAY more sense if you had to destroy the four main quadrants of the level (which was apparently little planet? I had no fucking clue, mostly due to those level transitions or the lack there of) by blowing something up in each of the sections and then use the teleporters to escape back to the central room.
You literally wouldn't need to change a thing to any of the level layout, just add an explosive of some kind to the end of each sections before the final teleporter and maybe add a red flashing light to the closed off section to make it more obviously apparent that it is now closed off.
