Because Ryuji doesn't let something petty, like a minor argument between friends, get in the way of something important (like Morgana & Haru's safety/well-being). For all his faults, he's someone you can always rely on to have your back whenever you need him. Even his reason for wanting to become a track star in the first place (before Kamoshida destroyed that dream) was selfless, as he was motivated solely by the desire to help his mother.

Abel I’ve actually finished Haru’s confidant, where she breaks things off with him, before beating Sae’s Palace, and that cutscene still played anyway.
Haru wanted to deal with the problem through her own means. Which resulted in her speaking her mind to Takakura and it turned out that he wasn't a bad dude afterall and he ended up axing the arranged marriage and driving Sugimura off. Also the Thieves don't just resort to changing hearts right off the bat. They only do that after affirming the situation is really dire, the scale of the crime, the victim/s are powerless, difficulty to prove the crimes and there not being any way for the authorities to deal with issue themselves.
Oh yeah, a super dire situation like a guy who cheats at a video game lol. Seriously though, while I understand Haru wanting to deal with him on her own, there’s still nothing stopping him from victimizing another innocent girl, so I personally would want to stop that from happening.

The cognitive version of him we saw at best is Haru's father's perception of him so it doesn't guarantee that he has done something or will do something similar to other girls. As for the cheater, the problem that he causes is that he is pretty much ruining the game industry, driving off players which in turn ruins business for the arcades and Gun About as a popular game. Considering how he hasn't been caught and banned with the Game developers unable to do something about it means that changing his heart is the resort needed to deal with him.

Hence Sugimura being killed off to set an example. Also worth noting how Ryuji immediately puts behind him being pissed at Morgana directing his anger at Sugimura. Morgana in turn swallowing his pride and stubbornness, asking if he could have Haru rest in exchange for apologizing. Showing us that despite dragging Haru around as his minion, he does care about her wellbeing. Ryuji accepts without hesitation. It shows that for all their bickering, they do care for each other and can talk to each other without turning it into their back and forth jabs. The Bittersweet Gamers hit the nail on the head regarding Morgana and Ryuji. Superior analysis.

I don't think people even realize how bad this scene is until later. She's in high school, he's most likely graduated, and could be in his early 20s...so...I don't care what country this is in... (even if it is legal in Japan at Haru's age)...just..horrible
Technically speaking, Haru is in her last year of High School just like Makoto (they're the two oldest members of the team, while Futaba is the youngest. During the original story, Makoto and Haru are 16-17, Joker and the others aside from Futaba are 15-16, and Futaba is 14-15), considering the fact that in Strikers, both Makoto and Haru are in College, while the rest of the team is still in High School. So it's unlikely that the age gap between Sugimura and Haru was _that_ unreasonable....and IIRC, in Japan you can get married as early as 13 years old provided both families approve beforehand. Doesn't make me approve of the engagement between them in the least due to how abusive Okumura is and how much of a controlling sleazeball Sugimura is. Just figured it was worth noting.

I think it would've been cool to change his heart in mementos. He may not have become twisted enough yet, even though he is cruel. It's more about whatever desire he has being twisted. But I think it would've been a cool side part of one Haru's ranks for just you, her and Morgana to go into Mementos and change his heart.

I remember a fanfic that offered a good theory- Sugimura’s been raised from birth like this, so his desire is normal to him. Thus, his Shadow doesn’t appear in Mementos nor does he have a Palace. But I agree it’s missed potential that he doesn’t have one

And I believe it's indicated later at some point that with help from the acting president of Okumura Foods once Haru's father died, that she managed to nullify the engagement and force Sugimura to give up on marrying her. The person who replaced Haru's father until she could take over turned out to be a good and trustworthy person as they immediately helped her nullify the engagement with Sugimura once Haru made them aware of what was actually going on.
In this particular scenario, I actually think what the Phantom Thieves *should* have done was, when they brought Haru back to Sojiro's shop, they also went right to Sojiro to tell him about the situation Haru was in (and maybe even tell him that Sugimura even hurt Morgana) and ask him if there was any way he could help them to keep Haru safe and away from both Sugimura & her father (and considering what Sojiro has been through with Futaba, I'm pretty sure he'd be really damn fast about doing what he could to help the group out). And if the group actually went directly to Sojiro for help, it might also have had a positive result during Sojiro confronting Joker & Futaba about Futaba's Calling Card, where he might make a remark about how he realizes that Joker's a good kid at heart and only wants to help people, even if it gets him in trouble to do so, and makes him accept them even quicker. The Phantom Thieves may be able to handle the Metaverse, but in reality they're still all just high schoolers who don't really have a way to deal with troublesome adults *outside* of the Metaverse....but Sojiro is a former government official and an adult that the group can rely on (Takemi might have been another option, as is Kawakami once her blackmailers were dealt with) and might know a better way to keep Haru safe at least until the "Deadline". But, that's just me. :)
Sadly, while Sojiro might have some connections after working with the government, they clearly werent't enough to protect himself from Shido's cronies later in the game, so I doubt he could keep Haru safe from her own father. Granted, Shido is undeniably more powerful than Okumura at this point, since he's already a politician, but Okumura probably has a fair few weapons at his disposal.
Ryuji may be my least favorite member of the team (and it's mostly just because he doesn't think things through all that often, and he doesn't *listen* even when he's told *multiple times* to keep his mouth shut about the Phantom Thieves until *after* Makoto busts the group entirely *because* of him and Ann [but to Ann's credit, at least *she* owns up to and apologizes for her mistake, Ryuji doesn't....or at least it takes him longer to do so]), but that doesn't mean that I don't like him. As the Bittersweet Gamers pointed out, the entire argument between Ryuji & Morgana was "petty" and nothing truly serious (it just came up at a bad time when Morgana was at his lowest point and overcome with his own doubts and insecurities, so the argument just happened to be the straw that broke the camel's back and made Morgana snap and try to overcompensate in an effort to prove Ryuji wrong) and the instant that Morgana was in *actual* trouble, Ryuji was the first one to rush to his defense and the first one to get beyond pissed at Sugimura for hurting Morgana (and for pretty much trying to force himself on Haru). He's the kind of guy that you can always count on to be there for you when you need him. Even if he isn't the brightest guy around, his heart is always in the right place, and he's got his friend's backs covered no matter what happens. Even *with* his flaws, Ryuji is still someone that I would trust to watch my back without the slightest reservations.

That’s the point of the arc though he doesn’t want to look weak and that’s why he stubbornly kept his feelings bottled up. Ryuji’s stupid comments weren’t helping how he felt but they were’nt ALL that triggered this whole thing.
While Morganas tantrum was pretty bad I disagree with Okumuras palace being awful I have to admit setting and music are not my favorite but it plays just as well as the others and the boss is a lot of fun.

You know I hate that people dismiss this as a tantrum as if he can't have his own charachter arc, or that it's so hard to understand what he's feeling here. I can relate so much to Morgana's insecurities, "Well he should just open up" yeah obviously but how many people who go through this ACTUALLY DO. It can be really hard to express your feelings when your feeling like this. You want to tell them but you don't want to seem like a burden either so you keep it in and it just builds and builds until you do something you would never consider doing if you were level headed. Someone with common sense could easily tell these things were starting to build inside of him. You can't tell me it comes from nowhere and you especially can't tell me Ryuji has no blame for it either. As of this comment I only have the new palace for Royal left to go. I've seen all of the pieces and that's why I can say Ryuji is definetly at fault for even how their relationship got off to such a bad start. Think back to when they first meet and you see him being a dick to Morgana for no real reason. He constantly second guesses and questions Morgana's actions even as the dude is trying to help them escape. Hell Ryuji does'nt even thank him for doing that, and that's not to say I think Ryuji's a bad charachter because he's not either. But even from the start Ryuji was constantly belittiling and doubting Morgana. Morgana does'nt start with the insults back to Ryuji until AFTER having to make a damn deal just to be let out of that cell. He's more respectufl and paitent to Joker or Ann because they trust his judgement since obviously he knows more about the metaverse than any of them. He may go off hunches and theory's but they always hit perfect bullseyes so the fact that Ryuji acts like Morgana does'nt know what he's talking about can easily come off as disrespectful and irritating which is why Morgana has much less paitence for him.
I swear man Atlas keeps on adding references to dark things like the kamoshida case of what he did to shiho (possible rape) and Haru’s fiancé telling her to give her “fun”. We can tell what that fun is Atlus.

That’s the point of the arc though he doesn’t want to look weak and that’s why he stubbornly kept his feelings bottled up. Ryuji’s stupid comments weren’t helping how he felt but they were’nt ALL that triggered this whole thing.
What I won't give to watch a cut of the game where Ryuji grabs Sugimaru by the ear for a solid minute before winding him.

This scene was just the final part of Morgana’s little tantrum and basically the beginning of Okumura’s palace. From one terrible part to another.
While Morganas tantrum was pretty bad I disagree with Okumuras palace being awful I have to admit setting and music are not my favorite but it plays just as well as the others and the boss is a lot of fun.
I’m not arguing with you, but most people have agreed that Okumura’s palace wasn’t the best. I’m just stating what I heard. But it’s ok if you like it. Everyone is subjected to their own opinion.
I'd say it was my least favorite palace but the ideas in it were very good. I just wish they were executed better
You know I hate that people dismiss this as a tantrum as if he can't have his own charachter arc, or that it's so hard to understand what he's feeling here. I can relate so much to Morgana's insecurities, "Well he should just open up" yeah obviously but how many people who go through this ACTUALLY DO. It can be really hard to express your feelings when your feeling like this. You want to tell them but you don't want to seem like a burden either so you keep it in and it just builds and builds until you do something you would never consider doing if you were level headed. Someone with common sense could easily tell these things were starting to build inside of him. You can't tell me it comes from nowhere and you especially can't tell me Ryuji has no blame for it either.
As of this comment I only have the new palace for Royal left to go. I've seen all of the pieces and that's why I can say Ryuji is definetly at fault for even how their relationship got off to such a bad start. Think back to when they first meet and you see him being a dick to Morgana for no real reason. He constantly second guesses and questions Morgana's actions even as the dude is trying to help them escape. Hell Ryuji does'nt even thank him for doing that, and that's not to say I think Ryuji's a bad charachter because he's not either. But even from the start Ryuji was constantly belittiling and doubting Morgana. Morgana does'nt start with the insults back to Ryuji until AFTER having to make a damn deal just to be let out of that cell. He's more respectufl and paitent to Joker or Ann because they trust his judgement since obviously he knows more about the metaverse than any of them.
He may go off hunches and theory's but they always hit perfect bullseyes so the fact that Ryuji acts like Morgana does'nt know what he's talking about can easily come off as disrespectful and irritating which is why Morgana has much less paitence for him.
