A cool thing to note with Henry/Phantom Renegade's character is that he's basically the Red of Medabots. He was the first protagonist for their Japan only Medarot game and his Medabot Arcbeetle was orginally put in a Metabee tinpet (seems likely the same one that he sold to Ikki). He collects rare medals for Dr Aki to prevent a redo at an event called the 10 Days of Darkness which was triggered by the high resonance of two rare medal Medabots going at it in the World Robattle Championships.

Medabots has one of the best intros of the late 90s early 2000s and also best fight scenes as well of that time. For me what killed it was actually the second season. First season was bomb awesome action funny as hell plus getting to see the medaforce was dope.
This era was my childhood. Kotobukiya is now reissuing their Medarot/Medabots model kits. I'm still hoping for Kotobukiya to make a PepperCat model kit at least.
I loved Medabots back in elementary school, and even had a Medabots friend with whom I could watch the show on the rare times were were at each others houses on the right days. I rewatched it back when I was in college, and that animation made it age like fine wine. I simply cannot watch it in Japanese. That dub is a huge part of the experience. Also, the idea of a world where people kitbash robot kits together to form the best possible combinations for robot fights is a concept that someone should really try again at some point. Like, someone just make a Custom Robo anime already. Or another Medabots. I'm not picky.
you should really give the subs a try! The original japanese dubs actually have a lot of scenes that explain a lot of context that were censored or cut in the english dub
I watched Medabots. It was fun. That referee and gym teacher were the most memorable characters. The rubberobo gang was funny, a bit cheesy at times but they were funny.
As a kid I had a DVD of a few dubbed episodes of Medabots, and the only things I remember from it are a bit about the main yellow robot being "naked" at a zoo and an episode about a plant robot wanting its owner to get laid. Very interested, will definitely go and properly watch it.
The times this show was on was so in frequent. And it would bounce around stations so much it was hard to be able to watch. And then Metabee got a redesign which kinda changed the flow of the show. But Rokusho was such a freaking badass. I swear he was one of my favorite characters.
You know how hard it is when Medabots didn't even get a new game nowadays. ust remember, their newest video game is a humanoid girl battle simulator....
I still remember losing my mind when Metabee’s VA appeared as Shun’s second Bakugan in season 2 of Gundalian Invaders I want to say suddenly changing from a female to a male voice but I didn’t care it was good to hear Metabee again
My favorite episode has to be when the kids are being tortured via running laps by their PE coach, Coach Mountain (if I remember right) only to find out he's been moonlighting as a fighter to save a playground for other kids. And when Ikki wins the fight, the coach makes him run laps anyway.
Medabots, Digimon and Bakugan were childhood favorites because they weren't as popular and had better animation than the rest (with less spiky haired protags).

I was beginning to think I was the only one who remembered this awesome show! Top quality fights, fun characters, an art style that has a cute charm to it, what’s not to like? I’m glad you commended the dubbing as well because it really stands out from a lot of dubs of that era. Not only because of its top quality acting but they actually throw a couple of adult jokes in there as well, my favourite being The Phantom Renegade responding to a reporter saying he’s going to expose his identity with “Its against the law to expose yourself in public!” Considering the harsh censorship most anime went through being brought to the west at this point I’m surprised they got away with what they did! Oh I’m definitely going to cosplay as The Phantom Renegade to a future con (once they’re back on)! Not many will recognise it, but those that will are truly awesome!
I just finished watching the series a couple weeks ago. I'd forgotten how good it really was. It came out (in North America) at the same time as Beyblade. Beyblade got all the spotlight and Medabots got stuck in its shadow. I think it's due for a 21st Century reboot. Beyblade too.
Medabots was one of the funniest most well written kids anime I've watched back in the day, that English dub is a definite 10/10. Rather unfortunate that this received very poor marketing cause the games, 2 Core especially, is a load of fun.

Whats his name sniper wolf it the dog with guns i remember its bad because his owner have like a cat medal in it. Like if he put a dog in it ill be taking shots like metabee.
I've never even heard of this show, but now that Mother's Basement has informed the world about this show's existence, I'll definitely give it a shot now.
OMG... I'm excited for you. This was a fun part of my childhood. Maybe swing back after you watch it with a comment?
Seriously this and digimon were my life as a kid. Enjoy best boy narrator
There's also a mobile game currently available called Medarot S if you want scratch that Robobattle itch you'll surely get when you watch the Anime (as long as you don't mind it being in Japanese).
Okay hivemind. You sure will.
look up the Medabots GBA game it's so fucking good
"That one digimon movie that Mamoru Hosoda keeps making"
Wait, there's more than just Summer Wars? I _had_ been wondering if Hosoda was responsible for designing EDEN in Cyber Sleuth because _BOY_ does it ever look a lot like OZ and the internet in Our War Game.
Well, if you've been noticing trailers, there is a movie called Belle directed by Mamoru Hosoda that's being advertised recently. I don't know if it's out yet, but it seems to have that same digital world flair.
@@NukeOTron Looks like "Beauty and the Beast but it's Summer Wars, also Belle is a country bumpkin posing as a noblelady online"
There were a bunch of slept on good animes from the late 90's/early 2000's. Monster Rancher, Zatch Bell, Zoids and Medabots. All great, fun and creative shows.
Man those shows were my intro to anime before I even understood what anime was. Such great shows.
After all these years...I thought I was the only one 😭😭 customizable figurines, badass games, and a dope ass show...I have and always been a metabots fan! Thank you for showing people how awesome this show is
"You've all been asleep for two decades now"
You act as if Medabee hasn't been living in my head rent free for that entire time.
"Don't mess with me, Mr. Referee!"
That line from episode 1 will be stuck forever in my brain
As a mexican, to me is always fascinating when you talk about anime from this era, here in mexico we knew about it, as it was in the same block as others such as shaman king, etc. We just didnt have the money for all the thingys
Los buenos tazos, aun tengo algunos como metabee xD
@@nekokey Cierto! Hubo tazos de Medabots! boy que triste que no haya despegado mas la serie
Same in Brasil D':
Exaaaacto!!!!!
yep, in Brasil it was also in fox kids, best channel ever.
I’m just jumping into the fan translation, I really hope this is the case. A story artefact completely glossed over in the anime.
I remember really liking this when I were little, and then it sorta just vanished/stopped. Happy to be reminded of it today, and to also know it's probably not just nostalgia that makes me think fondly of it today; might have to give it another go after this!
My brother passed away this morning. The music in this video brought tears to my eyes, reminding me of all the fun times we had together. Especially the Duel Generation music at the end; we used to have so much fun building decks together with all the random cards we got from packs and duelling each other. Thank you.
I feel so bad for your loss. I hope you and your family receive the strength to face this hard time. God bless.
Be strong.
Mr Referee is the only sports official I trust nowadays...
I loved Medabots! The best Mr Referee moment is when he wasnt needed and after showing up all dramatically like he normally does, he gets sad and slinks away.
And you didnt mention Rokusho like at all. And thats a crime. Hes awesome and his voice is Da Best.
My favourite moment is when he has to referee multiple battles and has wood cut outs with moving limbs attached to his own.
Sunday mornings on ABC family was my source of Medabots. And yeah the referee was the real MVP of that series because every time I hear Medabots I immediately go to "ROOOOBATTLE!!" I think I have a Medabot toy or 2 from a fast food restaurant's kids meal stored away somewhere too.
Medabots was a part of my childhood. It was so awesome when I watched it all those years ago, and finding out that a lot of big name and legends in the anime world worked on it that makes the series much more awesome
I wanna say "HELL YEAH IT IS!" before watching the video.
Same
F yea
Liked it b4 i watched!
Naruto voiced the main medabot
"... an oppressed underclass of Digimon kids..."
Dude, that hit right in the feels 😣
In case it wasn't obvious, I was definitely one of them...
I was raised by Pokémon and turned out Pokémon, but Tamers rules!
@@DrewWaranis To be honest, I didn't like anything past season 2.
I still am
@@Hadeshy Have you seen the new one? I liked it a lot.
@@coreywilson3493 I've seen almost all of them. The only ones I haven't watch is Xross Wars two because I still haven't finished the first Xross Wars. And Appmon cause... Well... They're Appmon, not Digimon, so I'm not really interest.
I also played LOTS of digimon games, and even rebought cyber sleuth now that it came out on switch.
Fun fact Henry/Phantom Renegade was actually the protagonist of the first medabot game back when he was a kid. Thought I don’t think the first game ever had an official English release.
"I. MR. REFEREE SHALL BE, THE REFEREE TO ENSURE NO ONE GETS HURT!"
So what you’re telling me is that this is the Dexter’s Laboratory of anime
Aye yo 😂😂
Was Dexter's lab underrarted? Never met anyone my age who didn't watch it.
@@GhostEmblem Not so much underrated as incorporating a lot of early careers
As a kid who loved Pokémon and robots, this was my fav as a kid. Unsurprisingly I loved zoids
MEDAAAAABOTS!!! Rokusho is my favorite character in this awesome series.
I loved Rokusho. Metabee and Sumilidon were awesome as well.
@@RazingPhoenix0079 yeah I know but Rokusho just caught my eyes.
It’s probably cause him wearing that cape, reminds me of the introduction scene for EVA-02 in Neon Genesis Evangelion.
Just go and take a look at that scene in NGE and you’ll see what i mean. Worm perspective shot matches , the vibe of them , spot on.
Hey, have a great day 🙋🏾♂️
Don't sleep on Arcbeetle bruh
The Medabot with a fking SOLAR CANNON XD
the animation was good and the early plot was funny, BUT the late plot involving rokusho, the bad guys and the "professor" (if you saw it you know what i mean) is fucking mindblowing, i will never forget the plot twist at the end, 9 yo me was like "WTFFFFF IS THAT!?? NO FUCKING WAY!" and that is pretty hard to obtain form a 9yo power rangers and anime lover like me. xd
By plot twist do you mean the giant Metabee fight?
@@PsychoMagnet by plot twist i mean the professor taking of the skinn and revealing that he was an alien xd

Found you again. Lol, great minds think alike. I want to see more medabot puns in your videos.
I watched this series religiously when I was younger. It was my first anime, before I even knew pokemon. I still have the DVDs somewhere and I occasionally listen to the first theme song
I loved the series it just up and disappeared so I couldn't see it anymore.
Yeah. Once it's original run ended, it just vanished off the face of the Earth. It was like it never existed.
@@gordieparenteau6555 Seriously, the back of my mind thought I made it up until I finally found the blu ray releases recently.
Yeah! It's been really great that Discotek has re-released the entire Medabots show.
Lots of Game Boy/Game Boy Color games in this series, almost none of them localized; I think that may be part of why the show itself is pretty much unknown, too.
It was sad states got LBX but the first one that did not had online muitplayer if they went with releasing the second LBX game we might of had more at less the second series came to nick the three one was um interesting wonder if Japan have medabot anime that never came out?
Finally! I've been saying this forever. Metabee is the goat
Facts
I have always and will always be a Battle Network kid, so the fact that there’s a crossover between it and Medabots makes my heart melt. Love the design they gave to MegaMan, ProtoMan, and Bass as Medabots. Pure perfection. Speaking of perfection, Cell from DBZ as a Medabot would be sick.
I hope they bring out a cyandog model
Yes we robot leading guys need it
I loved Medabots back in elementary school, and even had a Medabots friend with whom I could watch the show on the rare times were were at each others houses on the right days.
Oh god yes somebody who knows about custom robo!
If you haven't seen it you might enjoy the first Gundam Build Fighters.
you should really give the subs a try! The original japanese dubs actually have a lot of scenes that explain a lot of context that were censored or cut in the english dub
I had this really cool medabee toy my brother bought me back when it was around. Good times. I miss that toy and anime.
I just started playing custom robo again and my brother and I were just talking about how its what a medabots game should be like.
I watched Medabots. It was fun. That referee and gym teacher were the most memorable characters. The rubberobo gang was funny, a bit cheesy at times but they were funny.
Medabots will always have a special place in my heart. It was such an amazing show 🥺❤️
As a kid I had a DVD of a few dubbed episodes of Medabots, and the only things I remember from it are a bit about the main yellow robot being "naked" at a zoo and an episode about a plant robot wanting its owner to get laid.
Very interested, will definitely go and properly watch it.
SOMEONE FINALY fucking SAID IT 😭
The anime was so dope, mr referee I miss you 🤣!!
The times this show was on was so in frequent. And it would bounce around stations so much it was hard to be able to watch. And then Metabee got a redesign which kinda changed the flow of the show.
But Rokusho was such a freaking badass. I swear he was one of my favorite characters.
“That one Digimon movie that Mamoru Hosoda keeps making” 😂😂😂 bro, I can’t, this is the best quote of 2021
I rewatch Medabots once a year. Great visuals, great dubbing and cool music. Top tier dub.
I LOVED watching Medabots growing up. Thanks for bringing back the memories

Counterpoint: Symphogear exist
Also Metabee for Smash who's with me?
Symphogear is amazing
My people here. Also yeah, Symphogear G is basically the same popularity level on Mal. Which is a true crime.
Ladies, find a man who's as dedicated to you as Mr. Referee is to his job.
My favorite episode has to be when the kids are being tortured via running laps by their PE coach, Coach Mountain (if I remember right) only to find out he's been moonlighting as a fighter to save a playground for other kids. And when Ikki wins the fight, the coach makes him run laps anyway.
"I'd help you out, but Medabots don't swear."-Metabee.
Here in Mexico it has always stood tall with the classic anime of the old millenials.
As a child, I much preferred Medabots and Digimon over Dragonball and Pokémon.
Also Bakugan or Beyblade?
@@pkmntrainerdee6153 Bakugan yes. Never really got into Beyblade
Medabots, Digimon and Bakugan were childhood favorites because they weren't as popular and had better animation than the rest (with less spiky haired protags).

First came pokemon, then digimon... then monster rancher and medabots... I was into everything lol
Jesus, I didn't realize Medabots was so freakin' stacked when it started. O.o
Jokes on you, I was that weird kid that was into all this stuff.
Snark aside, the Medabots collectable toy game was pretty fun in low stake settings.
Could you imagine a world where Medabots, Digimon, and Yo-Kai watch were almost as popular as Pokemon?
Yo-Kai Watch got a FF14 crossover, so it's got that going for it. And the Digimon reboot is excellent
@Codex Yeah, the shows are popular, but when was the last time you saw Digimon toys or cards in the wild? Because I can't say I ever have
@@kainhighwind2 Most (not all) of the Digimon shows are great, and I think Yokai Watch is more popular in Japan than in the US. I remember liking Abit of the anime and thinking the game was pretty fun, but it's still not necessarily popular
Digimon was up there. Medabots in Hispanic countries was on tv a lot
@Codex That's fair. I don't know where Latam is, but since I don't know where it is it's probably nowhere near where I am, do it would explain the difference
I was a Pokémon, Digimon, Beyblade and Medabots kid. I even had the customizable toys for the series. So glad to see someone else finally mention it.
Watched this show to completion when I was young, including the somewhat lackluster second season. Loved every minute of it.
Medabots was fire and still holds up fantastically. On top of the fantastic action the show is probably one of the most genuinely funny anime I've ever watched m
The backing music is hella fire, and the action is cool in the 90’s unique style. Looks like a watch after a certain someone catches up on ODDTAXI….ahem.
This show got the worst time slot on the kids networks, I remember wanting to watch the show but was always missing it. I bought some of the toys back then, it was such a missed opportunity
YES THANK YOU FOR TAKING ABOUT MY CHILDHOOD
I just finished watching the series a couple weeks ago. I'd forgotten how good it really was.
It came out (in North America) at the same time as Beyblade. Beyblade got all the spotlight and Medabots got stuck in its shadow.
I think it's due for a 21st Century reboot. Beyblade too.
"My man even gave Brass the battle toaster an ass" has absolutely knocked me the fuck out
Ditto
This is one of those shows that you thought you made up in your head as a kid.
Medabots was one of the funniest most well written kids anime I've watched back in the day, that English dub is a definite 10/10. Rather unfortunate that this received very poor marketing cause the games, 2 Core especially, is a load of fun.
Dude YES! Medabots was my jam! It was my favourite thing on Fox Kids and YTV at the time, and it had everything! Cool looking robots, funny and memorable characters, an actually compelling plot, and a good ol' early 00s Canadian dub! It's still a series I look fondly on and having seen you bring it up in past videos before, it does my heart proud to know others loved it as much as I did and look back on it fondly, too.
