      Um spin the bottle is a pre teen thing not a college thing but very funny.I never went to college & im not a sports fan.my husband is the same way.I went to a major baseball game when I was in the 8th grade & I was so bored.my friend & I were messing with these drunks behind us.the best part was it was a school trip & we didn't get home until 4am.my brother & 1 sister went.my brother just partied it was a 2yr college it took him 4.even though the legal age of 21 teens r out there drinking partying & haveing fun.they find it a game to avoid the cops.its just like drugs.ur experimenting.now the dorms can be tricky.some have bunk beds & some r side by side.I say tricky because u know so many r having sex & if u think about it that's got to be tricky.they have here houses that r off campus that u can live in with roommates.then depending on how many rooms & how many r sharing u can have ur own room.then there r sororities that have there own living situation.it just depends. :-)

      If you're struggling with the term tea towel, you could use the term "cup towel". I've never heard of a coffee towel. Lol. The vast majority of colleges and universities are so large that in order to meet people that are like minded you'll usually try to join a club or sorority/fraternity (s/f). The s/f's are not cheap to join either; and the ones on my campus were mostly looking for people that had higher GPA's, and also focused on volunteer work.

    There was a period years ago when the U.S. lowered the drinking age from 21 to 18. In US dinking age was 18 in 1970s however since driving age in US is 16 there was alot of under age drinking and driving. A temperance organization Mothers Against Drunk Driving successfully got the US drinking age changed to 21. University drinking culture was changed as the politically correct university faculty closed university owned pubs, fraternity and sorority drinking parties, and pre game drinking at US universities. In the US you need a car to go anywhere so a car is more important than drinking. On the plus side more 16-21 year olds live and by the time they reach 21 they are alot less likely to drink. Underage drinking in US leads to license suspension until you reach 21. Most kids in US own a car at age 18.

    • @robertkoons1154
      @robertkoons1154 4 роки тому +4

      @Jonathan Parks before voting age to was changed almost all had 21 as legal age for drinking with big exception of New York. After voting age went to 18, most states revised laws to 18, with a couple of minor exceptions. Some states had beer legal at 18, "hard liquor" at 21. Over 5 or so years 18 for everything was more the rule. Lots and lots of drinking occurred in university dorms, fraternities, and among sub 18 year olds who could get an 18 year old to buy alcohol.There are still some places in bible belt (counties)which prohibit any sale of liquor. In Alaska many indigenous towns are theoretically dry. Big change was in 80s and 90s with MADD, federal highway funds were tied to increasing drinking age to 21 forcing all states to go there. President Bush 43s daughters were caught drinking at 18 and lost their licenses til 21. Imagine beig a guy and not being able to date because you didn't have a car until you were 21. Again in US driving at 18 is more important than drinking at 18.

    I love your videos, guys! Just wanted to put in my two cents worth: There is typically a distinction made between colleges and universities. In general, Universities offer graduate degrees (masters and PhD) in addition to undergraduate degrees (Associate, Bachelor). They also are typically larger and offer a wider variety of courses. Many universities are comprised of several smaller "colleges". For example, College of Fine Arts, College of Science, etc. College is the blank term used to describe any post-high school studies. Some opt for trade schools where they learn a trade like a plumber or electrician. Still others pursue special colleges like "beauty college" and the like. Of course, some don't even finish high school or don't pursue any higher education past high school.
    I lived on campus for only one semester. I had a roommate, but I got out of the dorm as soon as I could! Living on campus is usually required for Freshmen and Sophomores (1st and 2nd year students) - at least it was at my university.I definitely didn't think of it as a perk or status symbol. I think most people preferred to live off campus. After moving out, I rented an apartment and drove to campus for classes. I was never a member of a fraternity, nor did I ever attend games by any of the university sports teams. Some people definitely went all in though.

They enjoy their teammates, live in LA or near Chicago, and go to football/basketball games. Granted they’re VERY social people. Having a free education, training with Olympic champions beats retiring in their sport at 18 in their own country.

    OK y’all triggered me on the whole cheerleading thing! Cheerleading is considered a sport and all cheerleaders are athletes. They do tumble just like a gymnast; they have to dance and they have to do stunts and pyramids putting girls up into stunts you have to be athletic to be the base and you have to be athletic to be the flyer. I cheered my entire life and all through college. My daughter started cheering when she was four years old. And cheered all through college. She was teeny tiny but she was a beast! And just like many athletes she tore her ACL while tumbling at the age of 13. Not that that’s anything to be proud of!!!! Lol! So yes cheerleaders at athletic events get the crowd going they tumble they cheer they dance at the games to get the crowd roaring in their favor. But they also compete against other cheerleading teams and it’s serious business. I had to get that off my chest Joel and Lia!!! Love you!

    I think what you're missing about roommates is that it's a chance to make a friend. They have you, at the very least, take a questionaire/personality test to see who you match up with. This is a person who will potentially become your best friend (I didn't get along with my first roommate, best friends with my next one). College is a lot of class and homework, so it's nice to have that person already there to talk to, hang out with, go to parties with, etc. AND Americans are apparently just more outgoing and social than Brits I guess so it doesn't bother us.
    Sharing a dorm room isn't a problem. It's not much different from having a roommate, especially in nice colleges where you will be given seperate rooms with a common space to share. You have one half, they have the other half. You talk to each other, you work out the differences. Even when i didn't get along with my roommate i never had a problem finding time for myself. They'll have their own schedule and you'll have the room to yourself, or if all else fails, you can literally request that they find someplace to be for the night. It's an unspoken rule that roommates will agree to the request with the knowledge that when it's their turn to ask for a night, you'll give it to them.
    Living on campus is often required for Freshmen and it's generally just what everyone does unless you already live locally. People will eventually move off campus and get a place of their own with roommates or whatever, but to be able to afford to do that generally means you either got Daddy's money or you're working your ass off somewhere to foot the bill (paid internships, working a lot and saving up over the summer and working part time during school year, etc.). It's just easier to live on campus because you're closer to everything, but eventually people do what their own space, they want that seperation and by senior year they've got a solid group of friends or people they know that they know will make good roommates.
    As far as alcohol drinking goes...doesn't Britain have a dependency on alcohol problem going on? Anyway, I think all American colleges ban alcohol from being in the dorms. Some even ban the kids from being drunk on campus. American college students always drink at college parties (some drink too much, some drink in moderation) but they don't drink every day. You make it easier to get alcohol and these immature freshman and sophmores who do have a problem moderating their alcohol use WILL abuse it and they'll fail.
    College students eat a lot of cheap, crappy food and are pretty sedetary unless they're on a sports team. That means, to stay healthy, to stay fit, most college students will kill at least three hours a week inside the gym doing something. (Dance, swimming, weight lifting, basketball, racketball, rock climbing, etc). That and it's a good place that's free and is fun to just hang out with friends.
    College sports is just a more dedicated expression of our loyalty to our previous schools. We identify with our mascot, we are a community, loyal to the cause. we're all (most) are invested in how well our sports teams rank nationally in whichever division we are in. We show loyalty and support to the sports teams (these people risk their bodies to play sports they enjoy, the least we can do is go to their games and cheer for them).

    • @ml0723
      @ml0723 4 роки тому

      @TheKarlOshaughnessy you know what American's do? We leave the door open to our rooms when we're not wanting to be left alone and you will literally meet the entire floor that way. people will come, have a chat, watch movies, play video games, whatever.
      american dorms have shared spaces as well for the entire floor and building which encourages further socializing.
      But then again, it seems like Americans have no problem with socializing with new people...but Brits apparently do.

    One of the smart things I did when it came to paying for college was taking classes I could only afford. I would use a grant and scholarships along with working for a company that had reimbursement program or actually paid for courses upfront. I don't have any student debt because I refused to take out loans.
    My husband and I started a savings program for both our kids for college to save about 2 years of college education that they can use in the state of Florida. If they choose not to use it, they can take the money and use for a down-payment on a home, etc, after so many years of not utilizing it. But I'll be damned if my kids will go into debt over impossible student loans you can't ever pay off. #adulting

    I was 22 when I started college. I served in the military (stationed in The UK), hence the late start. My college experience was something you did not really touch upon. I attended a two year technical college which was 100 percent no nonsense, no fraternities, sororities or on campus housing. They did waste not the students time with useless and irrelevant coursework such as English Literature and what not. I learned how to repair and maintain complex mechanical systems. I lived in an apartment complex off campus with a fellow student who had similar goals. I supported myself tending bar at a local pub a few nights per week. Wild college parties? A few but nothing too intense. Most of the time it was having a few friends over for beer and a hockey game on TV. The other thing we did (when schedules would not conflict) was a Sunday Night "Married With Children" (showing my age a bit ) watch party at my place. Same idea as a hockey game social with the exception being Al Bundy's constant and vicious insultive demeanor. He was a crude, unrefined and cantankerous working class man caught up in a horrible dead end life. He was my hero.
    Were my college days my best years? I would say overall the answer would be yes. I studied hard, I worked hard and (when time permitted) I played hard. My time in The US Air Force taught me much about personal responsibility and as such it was a smooth transition into my college years.

Halloween parties are common as are other holiday parties, just an excuse to dress up. Staying on campus is typical for most Americans and college gear is WAY overpriced, it goes along with the obscene amount we pay to get an education, so frustrating! anyway, looking to study abroad in the UK next year, possibly in London. Although at uni you can still definitely ask for a shared room as it's way way cheaper, but it's the minority that do this. Hope this helped :)

    I'd invite you to a Penn State White Out but I can't even afford to take myself. The fun is contagious. Even the visiting team's fans talk about how fun it is. This year, the crowd was so loud, the opposing team had to call a time out because they weren't able to communicate the count.

    Great video!! Sharing a dorm room was the worst but it was a good way to meet people. One day you two need to come over and experience a college football game with one hundred thousand of your closest friends and tailgate before the game.

    Sharing a dormitory room on campus is an excellent strategic move for the best possible social life and also the widest range of a college experience. And it is certainly weird too!

    After first year many students rent off campus housing. They have their own rooms in a house they share.

    Living on campus depends on the type of school you go to. There are public and private universities and some offer dorms, apartments, students live in there sorority/fraternity houses, etc. It depends on your financial aid/financial position.

    Yep university is super expensive here... At 31 I'm still making payments on a student loan...😞...oh, and as soon as you graduate the flippin alumni association hits you up for donations (hello, I'm broke! Lol)
    Btw on the college attire, besides attire for students, it's also popular to buy your parents college attire. In my college days, I bought my dad a sweatshirt that said "University of Wisconsin-La Crosse Dad" 😅

      Here's a plan: If you don't have the money, go to a junior college for two years while living at home. Then go to an in-state school like University of Wisconsin - Lacrosse. Major in a field of study that will enable you to get a good job after graduation. Work full time each summer and earn $6,000. Some kids have parents who will kick in $14,000 per year for your last two years. If you don't have parents like that, you may have to borrow $28,000. Graduate and get a good job at 22 years of age. Pay off your student loans by the time you are 25. If you still have student debt at age 55, you have made some poor life choices. If you still owe $40,000 at age 55, you have made some serious mistakes and were hardly the average student.

    There’s several options in colleges for room sets. The cheapest are the ones where you share room but if you have more money you live in apartment style dorms or private apartments very close by.

    Housing varies by college or university. Often by dormitory building.
    I attended MIT in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Some dorms had all singles. Most dorms had a mixture of singles, doubles, etc. During my freshman year, I lived in a quad. We had separate bedrooms and a central common room. For the next three years, I had a single. By the time I was a senior, I had one of the largest rooms in the dorm.
    Many preferred to live on campus because off campus housing was more expensive.

      As a fellow Oregonian, young people playing sports start making a connection to suffering in cold rain, and being a committed athlete. I did track and field, and i have years practicing in the rain. It bonded the teammates in shared pain and complaing.
