This is the most accurate artistic representation of bipolar I have ever seen. It makes me ache but I do not feel alone. Deep appreciation for this artist who can translate her experience and ease the ache.
True appreciation for this song, I totally agree that it's such a fantastic representation of bipolar in so many ways. I just discovered this song recently and it's blown me away! I couldn't get it out of my head and had it on repeat until I knew all the lyrics. The depth of the story here is so gorgeous, sweetly dark and real. And with all the energy of this song, 'the birds were singing to calm us down'. So perfect.
"He greets me with kisses when good days deceive him . . . " Incredible I have struggled with terrible depression my whole life, and it has always been difficult for me to understand what it was like for the women I have loved who loved me to be with me . . . this song has come the closest to possibly shedding some light on this. Powerful song
Good songwriting. She is opening up her vocals on this song, too. It's trendy to be "cute and dark" at the same time. But that's a sign of the times: young people are caught in a dichotomy of enthusiasm and depression over how fucked our world is right now; life seems exuberant and hopeless...indeed, Manic. I feel like she's on to something authentic, which is rare in popular music, and I appreciate her- she's talented!
The filming techniques used for this video fit perfectly with the music. And I love the song and how hauntingly beautiful it is. Thank you so much for putting this up on UA-cam! :)
Perhaps it's not depression. There's something very comfortable and nice about the melancholy feeling. The moody, deep feeling that this song represents. I used to think that it was something wrong with me. But, it's something that's right with me. I enjoy it, I don't feel depressed.
It was this song that introduced me to Laura Marling, and this song that made her my favourite singer. It's a good thing I found everything on iTunes, I would have been extremely sad if I hadn't.
He wants to die in a lake in Geneva The mountains can cover the shape of his nose He wants to die where nobody can see him But the beauty of his death will carry on so I don't believe him He greets me with kisses when good days deceive him And sometimes we're scorned and sometimes I believe him And sometimes I'm convinced, my friends think I'm crazy Get scared and call him but he's usually hazy At one in the morning, day is not ended By two he is scared that sleep is no friend And by four he will drink but he cannot feel it Sleep will not come because sleep does not will it And I don't believe him, morning is mocking me I?ll wander the streets, avoiding them eats ?Til the ring on my finger slips to the ground A gift to the gutter, a gift to the city The veins of which have broken me down And I don't believe him, morning is mocking me Oh, the Gods that he believes never fail to amaze me He believes in the love of his God of all things But I find him wrapped up in all manner of sins The drugs that deceive him and the girls that believe him I can't control you, I don't know you well These are the reasons I think that you're ill I can't control you, I don't know you well These are the reasons I think that you're ill And since last that we parted Last that I saw him down by a river Silent and hardened Morning was mocking us, blood hit the sky I was just happy, my manic and I He couldn't see me, the sun was in his eyes And birds were singing to calm us down And birds were singing to calm us down And I'm sorry young man, I cannot be your friend I don't believe in a fairytale end I don't keep my head up all of the time I find it dull when my heart meets my mind And I hardly know you, I think I can tell These are the reasons I think that we're ill I hardly know you, I think I can tell These are the reasons I think that I'm ill And the Gods that he believes never fail to disappoint me The Gods that he believes never fail to disappoint me My nihilist, my happy man, my manic and I Have no plans to move on But birds are singing to calm us down And birds are singing to calm us down
I love this song so much, I can relate to it a lot from a situation I have been in recently... What a beautiful voice, Britain does churn out a good thing now and then.
This is a great Video... I dealt with an ex with Drug and mental issues for years before my ex left/I got away... we need awareness!!!!!!!! Say what you want........ Laura Marling is a WONDERFUL ARTIST!!!! She gets my High 5!!!!!!!!!
Just found out about Laura from Hop Farm Festival in Kent - Jesus, she has a fabulous voice, fabulous delivery, fabulous lyrics, gorgeous tunes, spooky and scary and sooo original delivery and understandable words and clever writing, singing, playing, concepts. Music is not dead. Hip hop. rap, r'n'b might NOT just be the future - maybe intelligence is...Can't wait till Hop Farm Festival (I'm 52 and despaired of finding good festivals and good music anymore) - thank you Laura, restored my faith!
I love Laura. Her and Amanda Palmer are still battling it out for best female songwriter of the 21st century in my head. It's uncanny how they both seem to scoo out pieces of my brain
Heard your other song on youtube 'New Romantic' months ago, and I had to scour through my history pages on my browser to find you just because I didn't put your song on my favorites. Great Job.
The first topic that I listened to Laura Marling... It changed me .... it made me be reborn within .... ,your music.... The video is brilliant in addition... I identified at once laura as Alicia ... of Alice in Wonderland.... Long life for all!
British women singer/songwriters are just sooooo much better than the whole of the rest of the world....Even just Laura Marling and Amy Winehouse are better than all the rest combined...We are lucky to breed such brilliance and I feel blessed that we have these two over here. Proud to be British!!!

Your comment is as perfect as the song.
Despite my own depression, the melancholy of this song is strangely helping.
On repeat!
do you still like it?
random guy Lmao 12 years pass and there are still comments
Stay strong brother I hope you're feeling better now and if you don't, don't worry it's just a matter of time!!

Still loving this song after all these years....
Must've come back to listen to this hundreds of times. Legit can't believe it's been so long since this was released, where does the time go?
Probably top 10 songs of all time for me - since I first heard it in 2011 or 2012.
One of these songs that goes right through you. Magical Laura Marling! Absolutely incredible!

i love this song... it agrees with so many things in my life right now... its a comfort to know that something this great has been recorded
I can't stop listening to this song...Wonderful.
He wants to die in a lake in Geneva
The mountains can cover the shape of his nose
He wants to die where nobody can see him
But the beauty of his death will carry on so
I don't believe him
He greets me with kisses when good days deceive him
And sometimes we're scorned and sometimes I believe him
And sometimes I'm convinced, my friends think I'm crazy
Get scared and call him but he's usually hazy
At one in the morning, day is not ended
By two he is scared that sleep is no friend
And by four he will drink but he cannot feel it
Sleep will not come because sleep does not will it
And I don't believe him, morning is mocking me
I?ll wander the streets, avoiding them eats
?Til the ring on my finger slips to the ground
A gift to the gutter, a gift to the city
The veins of which have broken me down
And I don't believe him, morning is mocking me
Oh, the Gods that he believes never fail to amaze me
He believes in the love of his God of all things
But I find him wrapped up in all manner of sins
The drugs that deceive him and the girls that believe him
I can't control you, I don't know you well
These are the reasons I think that you're ill
I can't control you, I don't know you well
These are the reasons I think that you're ill
And since last that we parted
Last that I saw him down by a river
Silent and hardened
Morning was mocking us, blood hit the sky
I was just happy, my manic and I
He couldn't see me, the sun was in his eyes
And birds were singing to calm us down
And birds were singing to calm us down
And I'm sorry young man, I cannot be your friend
I don't believe in a fairytale end
I don't keep my head up all of the time
I find it dull when my heart meets my mind
And I hardly know you, I think I can tell
These are the reasons I think that we're ill
I hardly know you, I think I can tell
These are the reasons I think that I'm ill
And the Gods that he believes never fail to disappoint me
The Gods that he believes never fail to disappoint me
My nihilist, my happy man, my manic and I
Have no plans to move on
But birds are singing to calm us down
And birds are singing to calm us down
