- Medicaid doesn't cover dentistry. But dental health affects many different aspects of a person's life. Bad teeth can cause social difficulty, and make it hard to find employment, aside from the fact that an unhealthy mouth can lead to or exacerbate many conditions.

I still think your entire body should be under the same plan. Dental, Vision and Medical should all be under the same plan.
It is sad that I'm pulling my teeth one by one to avoid the cost of root canals on a cash diet.
One part of the problem you didn't cover is that even when you have some kind of dental coverage thru Medicaid, good luck finding a provider that will take it. Having insurance is useless if no one accepts it.
In New York state Medicaid coverage for dental and optical is minimal at best, but it's nearly impossible to find any provider that takes it, even the medical part, let alone dental or optical. Usually your only options are clinics, and that's if you're lucky enough to live near one.
It's also a mystery as to why Medicare also doesn't cover dental or optical, as the people that have Medicare are likely to need that coverage the most.
Medicare and Medicaid doesn"t cover glasses or hearing aids and some orthopedic appliances. This is brought about simply because Pres. Johnson couldn't get it through Congress, unless certain things were left out. No drug coverage until Bush era either.
And even if you're lucky enough to find a dentist who accepts Medicaid or Medicare, chances are, they are horrible quality. Any dentist I've seen who takes either insurance is sub-par, I can brush my teeth better than the cleanings I've gotten. :/

Depression can be a source of poor dental health. I know this first hand. Messes up your sex life too. Try dating without any teeth. Ask me how I know, go ahead.
Unless you find someone who also has missing teeth, but it is pretty sad people can't love you as a person rather than what is on the outside. I guess the question would be would you really want them anyway. If they can't accept you at your worst they sure can't love you at your best.
@Travis Thacker part of the problem is dental care is so expensive, and not available to adults with low income. Which also makes people poor because who wants to hire a customer service person who will be interacting with other people that has bad teeth. Not to mention being in pain while taking care of a disabled child.
What is the accident of history that caused dental to be separate from medical coverage? Is there a video already on that?
I think he just meant that we see the problem very differently to other health issues, i.e. Surgery Vs Cosmetic. for example you can't discriminate against someone who has diabetes, but it's ALLOT easier and socially acceptable to discriminate against someone with poor dental hygiene. the point he might have been aiming is that we should encapsulate all body needs as health care.
I think you're probably right, SuperKami. When these plans were being created, we had a poor understanding of how dental hygiene affects your overall health, so it was considered cosmetic and not a necessary facet of healthcare. Same with mental health. Until recently, mental illness was seen as not real or not serious unless it became an emergency that required hospitalization, so preventative and primary mental healthcare were never considered. The private sector stepped in to fill that gap completely, and now that a thriving private structure is in place, there's little will to begin shifting the status quo, even though it's hurting people. This isn't just a problem in the U.S. I'm pretty sure most countries have this issue. Mine (Canada) certainly does.
Mental health and eyes need coverage too. Are not the brain and eyes as well as mouth part of the body?
Those are both covered 100% ($150 for glasses) under my state's Medicaid.

Colorado Medicaid covers dental services up to a $1,000 per year. However, good luck finding a provider that takes it and will see you in a reasonable amount of time.
Thankfully Minnesota's Medicaid has pretty strong dental coverage (as far as I've been able to tell), although it can be hard to find dentists who take my dental insurance AND are currently accepting new patients. Thank God for the U of MN dental school needing guinea pigs for their students.
EDIT: Ah, after viewing the map, I guess I only have good dental benefits because of my type of Medicaid.

my medicaid dentist made dentures and partial that has been cutting up my mouth causing infection, pain, discomfort, etc.... my ENT doctor heard him say on my cell phone, if you don't like what i made find another dentist... i have been crying on and off for months not being able to find a dentist who takes medicaid, here in Middle Island, (long island) NY... i need help and even the state and medicaid themselves haven't been able to help me find a dentist....
Are you saying that seeing a dentist will help you avoid costly medical problems down the line? You see where I'm going with this?

I didn't give a crap about my teeth until I lost five due to an accident. Now I'm mister dental hygiene. And my dentist and hygienist were instrumental in getting me to quit smoking.

Dental health plans suck period. If you have serious problems. Give it up. You can’t afford it.
In NH there is a sliding-scale place called Mid-State Health… we were able to ox so much for $40 per visit! Saved my husband and I from so much pain while being laid off from pandemic in the middle of nowhere
I've never understood why dental and vision coverage aren't rolled into medical coverage. They are both medical care, and important medical care at that. If acne treatment is eligible for medical coverage, surely dental and vision should be too.
Great video. You understated some of the risks for dental disease as it relates to cardiovascular issues. I have a patient I inherited after a significant dental abscess resulted in two of his heart valves becoming infected resulting in a emergency surgical replacement at age 30. He ended up having second emergency surgery at age 37 when the artificial heart valves failed. He is completely disabled for the rest of his life at age 40 due to poor dental care that resulted in extensive cardiac damage from his end stage heart failure.
When I was a kid we never had dental insurance and now that I'm a disabled adult on Medicaid the closest dental care facility is the teaching hospital 40-50min away. On top of having to pay for the gas to get there the parking is then pay for use. I honestly have no clue how much care is actually even covered >

It confuses me why mouth health isnt covered by normal health ins...does anyone know why this has become the norm?
I know makes no sense as bad teeth can lead to heart attacks, and facial infections especially your jaw. The pain is awful. I just think this whole system is setup to make us poor, and miserable no matter what we do. Part of it is you have to many people feeding off the system. Instead of government saying this spending is not necessary. I think they would have money for dental if they budgeted correctly.

It's a hole in Canadian healthcare systems too. Getting your teeth taken care of is really expensive unless your job has an insurance plan.
Discitus I was happy to see the Ontario NDP proposing to create a dental plan. I've always been surprised by how little attention dental health seems to get.
I'm from BC. Why is insurance given only to those, who do full time work? Why can't we get benefits based on the number of hours workEd? It makes no sense to me.

I always thought magnesium in water would have a much better impact than fluoride in water. It helps both your teeth and the inside of your body.
Idk what he's talking about. Fluoride is a neurotoxin. States and even other countries are saying no or totally banning it. It occurs naturally in food and water. If you need more yes go to the dentist but what's in our water and toothpaste is bad for teeth and bones. Osteoporosis and fluorosis.
If all you care about is money, know that NOT providing full dental care (include or canals etc) ends up causing SO many more medical issues that Medicaid WILL pay for… costing everyone MORE. No. Matter. What. Everyone knows you can take as good care of your teeth as possible and still need a regular dentist. If you’re against full dental coverage for all, you just hate poor people and want to punish them. And you’re literally PAYING EXTRA to do it.
How about eye coverage? Something as simple as being able to see properly seems like something that should be provided by the most basic insurance plan.

Wa state that offered dental was almost useless. Finding places that would take it, take you, and get you in that didnt schedule out 3 months in advance was a pain.

lalaithan Bernie's Medicare for all plan includes dental coverage and would cost less than the current US total expenditure on health care. In large part because it removes insurance profit and pay for a lot of claims processing bureaucracy from the mix.

My stepson has been on Medicaid since his biological father died. My work insurance covers everything, so I didn't want to pay for coverage for everything just for dental. Medicaid covers dental up till the age of 21, so he had everything done before then. Soon after he turned 21 he had an emergency and had to shell out $1,000 out of pocket so he could get a root canal!

Well, it isn't free, lol. He already has Medicaid for medical. I would have had to pay $4,000 per year to just cover dental.

This is my problem. I'm too embarrassed to go anywhere due to broken front teeth and a missing tooth due to a Sociopathic Dentist. But Oregon Health Plan won't cover crowns or implants not even on front teeth, the most important teeth when smiling. They will pay for all of my teeth to be pulled and for dentures though. Its ridiculous. They won't cover a crown over a tooth that had a root canal in which leaves a large hole. My blood pressure is now really high. They say they want people to get work and get off state help including foodstamps. But some of us get too embarrassed and depressed to go in public let alone apply for a job. People judge me and call me a tweaker. OREGON MAKE MY SMILE PRETTY AGAIN WITHOUT PULLING THEM OUT AND I'LL BE HAPPY AND CONFIDENT ENOUGH TO GET A JOB!!

30 years old and about to have my 2nd molar pulled, because I cannot afford a root canal! I blame my parents personally for not being on my ass about taking care of my teeth as a kid, and giving me junk food all the time! I'm constantly on both my kids ass' about their oral care luckily for their mother watching out for them they have never had a cavity
I'd believe ideas about the bettering of medicaid if it didn't seem like lifestyle choices, not access to healthcare, was the root problem. Cavities are easy to avoid. I've had none and haven't seen a dentist in 6 years. Still no problems. Oral hygiene costs, what, 12 dollars a year if you get the pricey stuff? And if you can do it while you're camping, then any demographic can brush their teeth at least once a day. And when the patients I see are the same ones skipping their free appointments, not taking the medications they're prescribed (which they would get for free), and choose to spend their dollar on daily half gallons of slushies, it's hard to see the programs being put to good use.
And if they know it keeps them from getting a job, then surely the ACLU would be happy to take their case. I just can't see that as being legal. Unless. . . .there's no way to prove it? Maybe there were better candidates and it's a coincidence? Personal reports of what people thought happened aren't facts.

I don't have state covered dental care in Canada either, and it makes no fucking sense. If you're over the age of 18 and don't have additional health insurance, you kinda just have to live with no dental care until it becomes an emergency, which must be SO expensive for the government. It would be cheaper to provide more preventative stuff and stop it before it becomes an emergency. But what can you do? Mental health is another area that's barely covered. I can't even imagine how much it's costing our government and our economy not to provide this kind of basic care.

Being someone approuch his 30s who never used to brush his teeth, because he grew up with parents who again did not brush their teeth and also smoking and acid damage from soda. Seek the help of a local dental school which can help find the best solution for you for a lower cost.

Dental schools depend on volunteers. None here in Broward county, have any volunteers.
Please don't advocate insurance/government getting more involved in dental. It just raises prices and makes parents more reckless with their kids about their kids teeth. Source: My aunt works as a dental hygenist at a pediatric dentist in a state where low income parents/kids get free dental care... she pulls as many teeth as she cleans. It's sad.
Here in Serbia it's covered for unemployed population, for others dental health procedures aren't expensive at all

I never took care of my teeth well, so when I needed multiple cavities done I found out I would only have coverage for four of them. Because of the immense pain and the fact that Medicare didn't cover much dental work, only two cleanings a year, the only option I had was to have them all taken out. This was done about ten years ago.
King Axolotl Tbh 2 cleanings a year and coverage for 4 cavities sounds reasonable to me, as long as you're somewhat taking care of your teeth and visit the dentist twice a year.
Justin, well maybe, but we can't really tell who simply has bad genes and who actually took bad care of their teeth. My girlfriend has had a few bad teeth even though she takes really really good care, brushing flossing, mouth wash... everything and also goes to the dentist twice a year including a cleaning there once a year...
i on the other hand am ok at taking care i don't really floss and i sometimes am in such a hurry in the morning that i don't brush my teeth... still my teeth are way better then hers.

I have bad teeth due to Crohn's. Repeated exposure to stomach acid isn't too nice on enamel. I have a debt in collections due to needing crowns immediately (the dentist didn't go over costs or other options behore hand) on my back teeth.
i am sorry but i am from germany where nearly everyone has health which makes it a lot cheaper and you can actually choose between many different insurers but basic dental care is included in every one of them.
heath insurance here pays for preventive doctor visits and it pays for regular dentist visits because its cheaper then to wait until people get really sick and it then costs a whole lot more to treat them.
+ if you listened to the video, dental problems higher your risks of becoming sick and lower you chances of getting a job, which then makes you unable to pay for medical care so in the end you need welfare so the state has to pay a lot more then if you had been able to just visit a doctor or dentist early...

For crying out loud, Aaron, third party payers are one of the biggest reasons for the rapid rise in healthcare prices. Applying the same model to dentistry is beyond idiotic. Paying is cash is perfectly affordable for an annual dental appointment.

jfsfrnd there are payment plans if the dentist offers them. They can be more affordable than some insurances. Instead of going through a middle man with insurance. These plans are different in that you are the only one paying for dental. Not a pool of people you pay into. Most dentists want more patients. So there should be a way to make it work with them.
