  • In this live video, I'm going to show you how the 2021 Ford F-150 hybrid generator worked to create power for the Texas residents hit by the cold weather. The F-150 hybrid generator is a great solution to not needing to carry around a separate generator.

    Powerboost helped us big time during the storm. Ran a space heater, fridge and computer equipment for 24hrs while we lost power in Houston. Those items totaled 1600 watts and the truck would run on the battery for 5 min and then the truck would kick on for 1min at 1000rpm and then shut off. Based on my calculations I could have ran like this for 5 days.

      Yup.. I’m one of em.. been utilizing the feature for camping, off site welding, armed security work, etc etc.. Won’t get a truck without this feature ever again. Just too good of a setup to not have it. The rest of the industry still hasn’t followed suit yet in 2024. When they drop the 7.2kw option for the super duty line I’ll upgrade to one of those but not until then.

    I have used this in my 21 f150 to thaw frozen pipes in my home in Dallas/Fort Worth while our power was out. I plan to have an electrician set up a cross over switch so that i can run critical items (like the gas furnace) should we have another extended power outage. Using this very feature is probably one of the main reasons we aren't on the news with a flooded house. When i got the truck i was thinking it was gimmicky and might be useful every once and awhile while camping. I could have never imagined actually using it to keep my family safe.

      i couldn't find a single one in central Florida when I bought my truck. There were plenty of Power Boosts out there, and I bought them, but they were all 2.4 KW. That's not enough to run your HVAC, but its plenty to run your fridge and freezer and provide enough power for your TV and internet. That would be my preference because 7.2 KW doesn't last long on a tank of gas, but 2.4 KW will last over 80 hours at full load. Gas always becomes a scarcity during these events, which we have in Florida every time a hurricane roles through. Now if you keep a fuel tank at the homestead, you could probably run everything including your HVAC for as long as you needed.

    The big difference between this setup and a regular generator is the ability to only provide as much power as is needed on demand, and then when the engine starts it's charging at max rate so it's getting the energy out of the gasoline into the battery as fast as possible and then turning off. Compare that to a generator where it's either running or not running, there's no ability to use less fuel if the load is light. So people are using a fraction of the energy being produced but the gasoline is still being consumed whether the energy is being used or not.

    • @possibility28able
      @possibility28able 2 роки тому +2

      This is incorrect.. Most, if not all generators/inverters use more fuel for a higher demand.

    • @mikesmith379
      @mikesmith379 2 роки тому

      @@possibility28able to a certain degree, yes--if it's a more expensive generator it can have variable engine speed, but only within a certain margin. They don't shut off and restart when the demand occurs so they are still using fuel when no electricity is being used, and most consumer grade generators will kick up to the high speed with a very small amount of demand. There is no comparison of the efficiency between a variable speed generator and this configuration.

    • @possibility28able
      @possibility28able 2 роки тому

      @@mikesmith379 I mean. I think there is almost a direct comparison, but one requires manual transfer of power while the other (f 150) seems to be automatic, which is more convenient, but if you just simply power off the generator when you're not using it, the gas consumption and efficiency should be similar as its just an inverter

    • @mikesmith379
      @mikesmith379 2 роки тому

      @@possibility28able That's probably a better comparison, but I can't imagine most people doing that. I live in hurricane country and practically everybody just runs their generator full-time until they run out of fuel!
      If you want to dig into the math, I spent some time trying to figure out my situation when the power was out for a week. I calculated that to keep fans going all night while we slept I needed about 6 amps (110 V) continuous supply. If I had a battery system then I would only be drawing that much and no more, and the generator would only turn on when the batteries needed to be recharged. Then the batteries will be taking the full output from the generator and getting maximum efficiency out of the fuel being used until the generator shut off.
      You could try to figure out the equivalent scenario for a generator to supply that level of power through the night, but I suspect that the actual amount of gasoline being used would be much higher.

I have put these type of inverters with 3 Yellow or Blue Optima batteries in Parallel on all my trucks for over 20 years now. Works like a champ.

Of course not all at the same time but I can run my heat pump (A/C or heat), my hot water heater, well pump, fridge, freezer etc and my home has all led lighting. Phenomenal run time at 25% load. Main reason for not having a larger generator is fuel consumption. Inconvenient yes but beats the hell out of sitting in a cold dark house with no water, sewage or heat or fridge and freezer. . Have enough fuel on hand at anytime to run 7-10 days without touching the fuel in my several vehicles including my F-150 with the large fuel tank. Anyone with a transfer switch can make use of the 240 volt plug and stop dilly dallying around. For non "approved" methods..... CUT THE MAIN DISCONNECT TO THE HOME FIRST (so you don't backfeed the grid through your transformer and get a lineman hurt)..... then come in through a welder outlet, or a dryer outlet or any other 240v receptacle in the house with a male to male cord from truck generator to home.
    Whether you do it correctly or not, then you pick up both legs of your house electrical panel and can simply turn on the breakers for the circuits you wish to power from the truck. I will tell you that 7000 watts will power most of a home and you will hardly notice the power outage. If the home is gas heat, water heater, stoves, dryer and the like.... you can power the entire home no sweat from the truck. Electric heat isn't going to happen unless you just ran say one 5k strip in a single air handler or something. Buck stove is the answer there. Run the hvac fan only to circulate the fireplace heat and otherwise you have your home powered up sans electric stove, and hot water for the most part.
    As soon as I heard mention of this generator option I wanted it BAD in the superduty. Can't believe F150 always gets the cool stuff first. Superduty needs a 10k now....

    Great video!!! I have been waiting for this my entire life (I just didn't know it). This is such a game changer for the market. Especially for those who have generators who know that the generator decides to die the moment you need it (because you don't do regular maintenance on it and let it sit for months-years). Can't wait to see how Toyata, Chevy, Dodge, and Nissan respond: this is only the beginning. And if you own a camper trailer, this is a MUST. Great video. My only complaint is that you shouldn't hate on the EVs, the hybrid has an advantage of the gas engine that can charge the batteries (a nice advantage), but you can fix the charging problem. For instance, ifyou have solar panels on your house. Yes, it's one more thing to buy, but the cost difference of the truck more than makes up for the cost difference of the solar panels.

    One issue with this design is that the truck generator apparently has a bonded neutral. This is fine for feeding individual loads but if backfed from the 220 volt outlet to the house main panel (with the utility main switch off) the truck will show a ground fault because the neutral is bonded in two locations: the truck and the house. Ford needs to provide a way to unbound the neutral to supply the whole house.

    First off, I'm a real fan of this hybrid. However when you're using power at the higher end of capability it makes no difference whether it's a hybrid or not powering the outlet. The efficiency of the engine comes into play, for fuel usage, but the physics of generating electricity stays the same. In fact, it might be that the hybrid is less efficient due to the additional step of routing the electricity through the battery before getting it to the outlet. (Full disclosure, I do own Ford stock😁)

      Not so fast. That's exactly how a UPS works, and that's exactly how commercial generators are use to provide disaster recovery in businesses so that emergency power is transparent to the user. Obviously you're not going to have your F-150 plugged into your grid to provide transparent failover to genset power, but the battery doesn't really tax the power. It does make sure the power is clean and spike-free however. That is why our equipment runs off of UPS all the time, and even our commercial power is run through the UPS. All we have to worry about is a fuel supply and testing the equipment regularly to make sure it's going to work when we need it.

    • @oldretireddude
      @oldretireddude 3 роки тому

      @@Immolate62 I tend to agree but, but I think that there is a tax that depends on efficiency of the battery and it's control components and connectors. The heat in the components is the tax, assuming everything is sized so there's no delivery restrictions.

      Every time energy changes phase it loses something. Gasoline to electricity using a generator (truck engine or stand alone) is far from 100% efficient, there are significant loses in heat, that's why engines have cooling systems. Putting the electricity into a battery then transferring it through wires to a device loses energy too. The battery can do a good job of evening out the supply to a load but it does nothing to generate electricity. Watching the video you would be given the impression the hybrid battery was the source of the supplied power when in fact all it does is store the power from the generator on the way out of the truck.
      Don't get me wrong, I think Ford Power on Board systems are great, I just ordered an F-150 V-8 with the 2kW generator, but they really are just large portable generators that you don't have to worry about the gas going stale and the oil turning to sludge from sitting in a shed for months or years between uses.

    Honestly my question is why did it take so long for it to happen? Blackouts while uncommon aren't unheard of, and people want to have power when camping and stuff. The car or truck is already a fairly large mobile piece of equipment that stores fuel, but wasting gas to constantly run the inverter is a huge waste. Good on Ford being the first I suppose? Well maybe there have been others in the past that weren't as popular or as efficient or some such.
    Could be interesting what else the companies think to stick it in, I would guess crossovers or SUVs if it's a big camping thing. That and not everyone wants a truck so large they can't fit it in a garage, though if it's still burning gas every so often when creating power remember to let the garage get ventilation.
