  • Have you ever noticed that your experience on a roller coaster can change drastically depending on where you sit in the train? Some people prefer the front row, while others insist the back row is faster. In this video we explore why this difference occurs and whether the back row is truly faster!

    Here's the short answer.
    Back: faster/whips more/bumpy
    Front: best view/more wind
    Middle: safe bet if it's your first time/best line

      Middle also gives more hangtime on stalled inversions, like on Smiler. That being said, most rides with stalled inversions tend to have very short trains. And most of the ones that aren't are RMCs which also pack a lot of airtime, so you'll only ever be able to take advantage of it on Copperhead Strike and a few others Mack coasters with long-ish trains AND stalled inversions.

      From what? The ride? Pfft...
      The most dangerous thing you can do at an amusement park is _drive to the park._ You're more likely to be killed by a lightning strike than by a roller coaster. Heck, you're more likely to win the lottery than be killed by a roller coaster.

    if you want to have the most fun, or maybe want to ride with someone who doesn’t like coasters, go in the center or front. If you want intensity from the drop to the end, -or if you’re 12 years old,- go in the back, if you want views and less (perceivable) intensity (the forces on the front and back are relatively the same except for the first drop) The length of the train is directly related to how different the front, middle, and back experiences will be.

  • @darrenk.2389
    @darrenk.2389 5 років тому +14

    Very informative and accurate. However, you failed to mention how the length of the train heavily affects the ride experience.
    For example a dive machine has shorter trains which neutralizes the hang-and-drop forces, while a new gen B&M Hyper will have long trains to maximize the airtime gained on each extremity.
    Soz for the long comment :)

    • @coasterbot
      @coasterbot  5 років тому +6

      It's self implied that the length of the train will make this effect larger or smaller, or at least I felt it was when reading through the script. You're certainly right though. The closer the rows are to the 'middle' of the train the less of an effect it will have :)

    I got to experience all the roller coasters at Blackpool Pleasure Beach for the first time last weekend, and it was certainly interesting to compare different seat positions. The old woodies were great in the back row, being hauled over the drops and hills. They felt kinda tame when sat right at the front, except when being propelled up the hills. Avalanche was surprisingly intense when sat right at the back. I did Revolution on the front row, and that was almost too intense going though the loop backwards!
    Icon was great in both the front and the back; you either get great views or the fantastic air time over the hills. I did the Big One in the back first, and was kinda scared approaching that janky first drop. Thankfully you get used to it after a while. I sadly didn't get to try it in the front row, but I guess the view is also kinda scary there!
    I also noticed on the old woodies, you were certainly right about the different between a wheel seat and non-wheel seat. Much rougher with the latter.

    Just crushed Kings Dominion today for the first time. Went by myself and rode every coaster in the park including Intimidator 305 three times. Rode back seat every time unless there was an open seat in one of the other rows alleviating any wait time. I'm back seat all day every day. Getting pulled over the top of the 305 ft Giga coaster to ensure taking that entire massive drop at full speed was spectacular! SPECTACULAR I SAY!! :-)
    Another great vid. Thank you.

    I agree with most everything said. I like the last car for speed, but (before they removed it) I liked the front car for the Big Bad Wolf at Busch Gardens Williamsburg, Va. The cars hung from a rail and then the track raced through a village and tight paths between trees. The passing of so many verticals close to the cars gave the impression of it going faster than it actually was.

    Backseat:
    Best for coasters that lift up and drop then. (Rides with just one car excluded such as Saw The Ride, Thorpe Park)
    Front Seat:
    Best for rollercoasters that get accelerated so all the wind comes in your face and you'll have a view.
    Middle Seat:
    For rollercoasters that go back on the rails like Tigris , Busch Gardens Tampa or Speed of Sound, Walibi Holland.

    Writing with excitement before I've even watch this clip, I've been aware of this since I rode my 1st coaster with more that two cars 40 years ago. When I finally went to Cedar Point for the 1st time ever last year, the back row was for me the best in every coaster there, except Maverick, where I like to sit in the middle. But it has a car 0 so the middle (of 3 cars WITH SEATS) is still behind the centre of gravity. ;) (I even preferred Wicked Twister as the tallest spike is the last backwards one). Now to watch this video...
    ... I've now watched this video: I like the back car on almost all coasters, but I can now appreciate the front sometimes as a surprisingly different experience on coasters (like Coaster at Playland in Vancouver) that I usually sit in the brutal back row. ;) I'm also open to the idea of some coasters being better in the front. Now I'm looking forward to reading the other comments on this clip. Thanks for this awesome video!

      @@visionist7 I'd agree perfectly; the best element in that ride is probably the launch in the front car but the back car doubles the amount of "pony tricks" it bestows; You actually get a great drop on the back that you just don't in the front, due to the low speed it has when cresting the one and only hill.

    Formula Rossa in any seat but the front is boring. In the front seat, it's one of the greatest roller coaster experiences I've had. You are literally experiencing the wind speeds of a category 5 hurricane and you need that wind to tell your brain how fast you're really going.

    On roller coasters that are really intense and compact like the smiler i prefer to sit in the front row, even though there is usually like two rows on roller coasters like that it still makes a difference, i also prefer the front row on dive coasters, and b&m hyper coasters. I prefer the back row on intense wooden coasters, stuff made by gci, gravity group, rmc, and intamin prefabricated rides like el toro. I dont have a preferred seat on launched coasters.

  • @8RJD9

    I think that there is a sort of prestige that comes with sitting in the front. I always try to do it at least once per every new rollercoaster I ride. After that, it's any row. But, with rides that have a lot of airtime I prefer the back. I will also try to sit on a certain side of a rollercoaster that has a roll element depending on which way it rolls. That whipping sensation is just so satisfying.

    should be noted that zero cars are sometimes added to coasters, smoothing out that line between the ride experiences in the back vs the front, zero cars allow for plenty of force but without the roughness that can come with it,
    try riding nemesis inferno front row and then second row, you'll notice its much smoother in the second row because the front acts as a zero car reducing the peaks and troughs in force that often lead to headbanging

    • @coasterbot
