Worlds tallest and fastest giga coaster only uses lap bars for a reason. OTSRs will give you concussion from headbanging if the ride is intense.. shoulder restraints absolutely suck
I must be one of the few people who loves being locked in ride restraints! I really like the feeling of being tightly locked in over the shoulder restraints, knowing they're protecting me and there's absolutely nothing I can do to escape them.
@@coasterbot Absolutely, such an awesome feeling! I like lapbar restraints as well but I much prefer the fully locked in and secure feeling of OTSRs. I also love being in B&M vest restraints, I always try to lean back and get the vest to lock as tightly as possible. They feel incredibly secure and escape-proof especially with the leg restraints as well. :)

In the extremely rare cases of someone falling out of a ride, it's almost never that the restraint failed mid-ride and popped open; when it's closed, it's staying closed until the end of the ride. It's usually that it was never sufficiently closed to hold the rider in in the first place. And that itself is a sign of a design and systems failure, because the ride should not be able to dispatch in that situation--usually leading to the restraints being modified to keep it from happening again.
The lap ones make me feel like I’ll fall out when going down. So I end up pushing it down to make sure but then regret it immediately bc it hurts baaaad
You see, I LOVE over shoulder restraints. It makes me feel safe, I can pin my head to the back corner and no matter how scary the ride is, I just feel safe.
My mum was had a ride go off and noticed someone restraint didn't lock and lifted back up. This ride goes upside down and quick. Everyone was shouting for them to stop the ride. They fixed the issue

Videos like these are what I can thank for making me a coaster enthusiast. I always used to be scared of rides because I thought they were unsafe. After I learnt about just how safe roller coasters were, I started going on every single one I possibly could. I now have 0 fear going on to a roller coaster and have a credit count of over 200, which, for an Australian, is pretty bloody good considering we have probably got fewer than 20 roller coasters in the country.
I a skinny small person, usually have my legs feel like they’re being cut off with lap bars if they’re too tight or feel like I’m gonna fall out if they’re too loose, so I always prefer over shoulder ones
Me too. Even tho I've tried others. But I guess its just a paranoid thing. So, somewhere in roller coaster, mechanically wired, dude world, ratchet means a "death grip?" 🤔 Interesting. 9:55 amuses me tho. That look of phew, I now feel safe & excited. If that security failed him, & only that seatbelt was left, he'd still be flying everywhere, strapped in. But still. He looks like a thin guy.
Honestly though they make me feel secure, I always associate them with headbanging, since my first looping coaster ended with me having a massive headache that lasted all day. I'd honestly say my favorite would be lap bars from above the head (like on Velocicoaster for example), since they'd give the same sense of security for me, working the same way Shoulder restraints do, without the concern of headbanging.
Those are my favourite. Because just in case the shoulder restraints fail you still have something keeping the restraints in place. That unfortunately happened to my brother once when we went on an insane ride, he refuses to go on any ride that doesn't have one
Mad Petal I refuse to go on any rollercoaster fearing that the restraint might come undone lol. Now that I have seen this video I feel better about riding a rollercoaster.
This is awesome I’ve always wondered about this. When I was younger I would always have an irrational fear that the restraint would come off and I would fly off the roller coaster. Once you get out of that fear you can really start enjoying the rides knowing nothing bad is going to happen.

UA-cam 2019: Heyy! Do you wanna see how Roller Coaster restraints work? Me: Yeah! Sure, its just 3 in the morning and I have an exam to take in the afternoon.
the restraint on velocicoaster is my favorite ever. it feels so safe but also terrifying at the same time. plus you don’t band your ears up the whole time!
Very informative video. I always wondered if seatbelts were just there to make you feel safer, since in many rides it doesn't look like they would help very much in an emergency.
@S. Dancer think that's cheap,I can give you some examples of cheap. Back when I was a lil fella, some kiddy rides had a ROPE seatbelt It would get pulled across your lap or tummy, and secured thru these little toothy cam things to lock it One kiddy copter ride I went on had a Chain seatbelt, with a snaphook fastener!
JTCoasters I have to admit , that I pretty much hold onto them , when I rode Kärnan , because you feel as if you would fall backwards when you are staying for 3 seconds in a 90 degree position . It’s an amazing feeling though .
Maya is Fiya I like the Vest Restraint because it secures you like a lap bar and also a over the shoulder restraint and those are secured Restraints on the 4D Spinning Roller Coaster.
I'm starting to hate shoulder restraints on any ride. Just unnecessary. They only perhaps make sense on dive coasters (and then only on the front row) as you're hanging over the edge face down, but Hangtime does exactly that and has lapbars (not to mention a bunch of inversions too). Shoulder restraints age like sour milk. An older (10 years or more) coaster with shoulder restraints is almost guaranteed to be unpleasant
I absolutely love how this video shows coasters from all over the world, specifically seeing my home coasters in Sweden, definitely didn’t expect to see so much of my childhood favourites in here!
I just think it’s so cool and great that restraints can keep my tiny 4’8 safe. Makes me really appreciate people who build and maintaine roller coasters. I have a huge fear of flying out. Also really appreciate the workers who check your restraints before you take off.
I wasn’t really scared of falling out of a ride because I’ve heard that someone on a ride that has stopped is safer than they were driving to the park. This is honestly very interesting to me and makes me trust the restraint system even more than I already did
I have to say, I used to be terrified of any amusement park ride, let alone roller coasters. In 2019, after watching tons of your videos, I build up the courage and went on my first roller coaster. Fast foward to now, rollercoasters are one of my favourite things to do. I learnt how to take the fear and turn it into excitement.
Do you ever hear from viewers who were afraid of riding coasters, but changed their minds after watching your explainer videos? It seems to me that these, especially the ones that explain the mechanical aspects, would do a good deal to put a nervous rider's mind at ease, but first you'd have to get them to watch, and I'm not sure how likely that is.
I agree! I love roller coasters, though I used to feel scared, and scared not of the speed or height or whatever, but of some sort of mechanical fault... Ever since I started watching this channel, i'm not scared at all :)
I’m a physics teacher and I’ve used these videos to calm the nerves of some of my students before visiting Alton Towers. I organise a trip there to learn about the physics of rollercoasters!
I was hoping this video would stop my fear of lap restraints. While riding Blue Fire in Europa-Park I felt I was slipping out of my seat and genuinely feared for my life. Since then I never got on a lap restrained coaster with inversions again. In my head it just is not safe. And unfortunately this video hasn't changed that.
The over the shoulder restraints are an absolute nightmare in some coasters that are shaky, your head becomes the pinball bouncing between both sides of the restraint. I will choose lower body bar restraints 100% of time :) better airtime feeling to.
i always felt safe unless your really small and thin that you can slip out of the restrains also i saw title said Restraints Explained i said i think its pretty self explanatory but after i watched it it was good
Restraints make a huge difference in the comfort of a coaster. I personally love the lap bar from above, just like Mack Rides does it. They are comfy, you feel safe and exposed at the same time.
I've always enjoyed rollercoaster rides but I've also always have had an irrational fear of my restraints coming off somehow. Now I feel waay better/safer thanks to this video :D
One such rollercoaster restaurant exists at Alton Towers. Based on videos I've seen, it's quite a clever and fun concept! Watching your food come to you on a little track is a fun, fresh new experience of sorts if it's your first time. I want to know what it's like in the kitchen as they load the little carriage that carries your order, then they send it whizzing down the track to your table.
That’s why I like B&M’s rides: they are really smooth and minimise head bashing. Or those restraints that have cushions on either side to soften the blow.
As a larger than average man, I definitely prefer lap bars to over the shoulder restraints. Personally, I find B&M’s clamshell restraints to be the most comfortable.
I feel much safer with the over the shoulder restraints.. I'm scared I will fall out with just a lap bar, even though I know that super unlikely. But yeah they're not super comfortable physically

It's the way the guys putting on my restraints always just look so chill and carefree about it, I'm always like "wait but is it on? Is it on though? Did you check properly?!" Lol
The shoulder restraints with the vests are my favorites. I like the shoulder ones because I feel more secure, and since the best fits more snugly I feel additionally safer and also bang my head less. They are so much better than regular over the shoulder!!
4:28 Being a larger human I hate this type of restraints, I've only seen them on giant coasters. either it's way too tight, or it's way too lose and it feels like you're going to fly out, you lift off your seat 4-5" when you're going down a hill, and the only thing to hang on to are two little handles. Man, it's fun!
I have been on one that had the same stiff lap bar for a row of 4 people. Skinny 12-year old me could climb out at any time if there was a larger individual on that row. Ride didn't go upside down luckily
You mean Pepsi Max in Blackpool Pleasure Beach? Never again. Idk how it is now, but it was my first rollercoaster, and for the longest time, it was my last. EDIT: it's confirmed, they still have the same dingy loose-ass seat belt and metal rod in the front to hold onto...
Lap bars are the best in my opinion. Nothing beats the feeling of almost flying out of your seat! Plus over the shoulder ones are extremely uncomfortable.
The vests suck on the few I've been on. They do kill most of the potential airtime, especially on Banshee & Wild Eagle. Some vest restraints constrict when riding also. On Wild Eagle, for example, it was crushing my chest midway through the course, and wasn't very pleasurable. Wing Coasters are already the most boring B&M model (to me), that didn't help my view of them. Gatekeeper's wasn't so bad, but they ruin any sort of freedom I'm able to get from the old OSTRs. Banshee could be the best if it had the old ones. I do agree that the old Vekoma OTSRs are the worst. Their vest-like OTSRs are much more comfortable, but are still somewhat restrictive on space (I'm a hands-up kinda person).
Living 4us So what? It makes them feel safer, and it’s not like it’s killing the experience. If they’re otsr you’re probably not getting any airtime anyways.
I know what you mean, I was terrified of coasters before and I only got on my first because it had a belt that connected to the OTS harness. (I love them know btw)
When this video appeared on my recommended today I was so excited, not only because I like to learn anything I can about rollercoasters and theme parks, but also to find out what the proper name for what I now know are called over-the-shoulder restraints, which should have been quite obvious to me for years, however since I was a child these have only ever been Wolverhamptons, don't ask me why, my mum just always called them that and I thought it was such a charming name, even if its namesake city is not so charming. Thank you for this video, it was so interesting to learn more about such a topic.
Now I'm fascinated by the question of *why* someone would call over-the-shoulder restraints "Wolverhamptons". There seems to be no public trace of this so maybe your mother coined the term! I found a video of them in use at a funfair ride there, but funfair rides happen in a lot of places...
@@MattMcIrvin Your reply actually made me go and ask her about this, cause to be honest I never even thought to question the process behind naming them. But apparently it goes even deeper than just my mum, she got the term from a friend of her's who started calling them that, and sadly there's no way now to find out why he called them that either. Regardless, I think it's such a fun name for them, even without knowing the true meaning, but it is quite peculiar why that city of all places was used to name them, especially as you say there's barely any link between Wolverhampton and theme parks. It's open to interpretation at this point, maybe one day an answer will be found.
any time you get in a car you are putting your life in a much less safe mechanism. If people start dying on roller coasters everyday nobody will pay to ride them anymore. People already die in car accidents every day and it seems like nobody cares.
I have rode the Jet Star one without any restraints when i was a kid. I was terrified but i never was even close to flying out of there. Good, thrilling memories ❤️
Another notable thing: S&S uses a combination Hydraulic-Ratcheting restraint system on their modern rides from my experience working Power Tower at Cedar Point, which got the new system added this year. I don't know the exact workings though, just that we have to independently lock the hydraulics after the ratcheting system.
I like the lap bars that come over the shoulder to push down. The type that are now present on Universal Orlando's Velocicoaster. It feels secure and comfortable.
I wish more people would see this because I feel like people have so many unrealistic fears. And knowing that there are several fail safes as well as the restraints not being able to be open until it docks back into the station would change some people's minds. Granted the videos that scare the crap out of people are from other countries that don't have the same safety regulations if any at all.

Very informative video.
I always wondered if seatbelts were just there to make you feel safer, since in many rides it doesn't look like they would help very much in an emergency.
@S. Dancer think that's cheap,I can give you some examples of cheap.
Back when I was a lil fella, some kiddy rides had a ROPE seatbelt
It would get pulled across your lap or tummy, and secured thru these little toothy cam things to lock it
One kiddy copter ride I went on had a Chain seatbelt, with a snaphook fastener!
Everybody is like oh interesting.
And I’m just sitting here like “how the heck he got so many clips of people locking in there restraints?”
i doubt he recorded all of these, altho im pretty sure prior to making this he did a large trip of parks in europe

I think safety video's of the parks (or vlogs)

Do you know what is the issue of headbanging? It’s why some people dislike the over the shoulder restraints.
Kenepo4u Keep you’re head to one said then that won’t happen.
Danielle Dewitt headbanging can be inevitable on rough coasters
Bruh moment v17 Keep your head toone side.
Adolf Hitler Nemesis does slam your head, nothing smooth about nemmy.
Looking for the comment. I know one ride so bad that it gave people back/neck injuries. Went on it once and never again. Worst headache ever.
GP be like "Its unsafe if it has lap bars I only trust the shoulder thingies"
JTCoasters I have to admit , that I pretty much hold onto them , when I rode Kärnan , because you feel as if you would fall backwards when you are staying for 3 seconds in a 90 degree position . It’s an amazing feeling though .
The GP doenst trust anything
I gotta say I prefer shoulder and vest restraints because they make me feel more held and supported, even though I know I’m just as safe otherwise
Sweden has some fantastic roller coasters!
I actually love the vest! To me it feels very calming almost like a nice hug. It feels very safe and secure
Absolutely. I can enjoy the ride more when I feel I'm locked in tight.
Does anyone have the sudden urge to, go to a theme park after watching this video.
Me!
@Wanda lucky!! I haven't been to a theme park in a while
I'm heading there in 2 days lol
Yep. Even though I was just at Thorpe Park exactly two weeks ago.
No
I just think it’s so cool and great that restraints can keep my tiny 4’8 safe. Makes me really appreciate people who build and maintaine roller coasters. I have a huge fear of flying out. Also really appreciate the workers who check your restraints before you take off.

UA-cam Recommendations: Wanna watch an 11-minute documentary on roller coaster restraints?
My 3 AM Brain: Sure why not.
I wasn’t really scared of falling out of a ride because I’ve heard that someone on a ride that has stopped is safer than they were driving to the park. This is honestly very interesting to me and makes me trust the restraint system even more than I already did
who else just randomly saw this in there recommended lol

I feel safer with the over the shoulder restraints, but also I perfer the ones that also include seatbelts, I just feel less nervous with seatbelts.

Tom MB Yeah. Who cares about one comma anyway?
I have to say, I used to be terrified of any amusement park ride, let alone roller coasters. In 2019, after watching tons of your videos, I build up the courage and went on my first roller coaster. Fast foward to now, rollercoasters are one of my favourite things to do. I learnt how to take the fear and turn it into excitement.
i have the same story! it's such a powerful feeling to overcome that fear, and clear and correct information sure helps a lot!
@@paulgibson193 oh gosh I'd like to have you as my physics teacher! I bet students love you :)
Liepa Rom. It’s a great way to get them to engage with the physics of the rides!
I had the shoulder once and my ears were both flaming red due the head banging..
I’m actually very grateful for this video. Because I’ve always felt unsafe with harnesses that go on my lap. Now I feel very safe
i always felt safe unless your really small and thin that you can slip out of the restrains also i saw title said Restraints Explained i said i think its pretty self explanatory but after i watched it it was good
Shoutouts to coasters like Wild Chipmunk at Lakeside that have literally no restraints (not even a seatbelt)
Jeees that's crazy!
Lol I have that credit
Restraints make a huge difference in the comfort of a coaster. I personally love the lap bar from above, just like Mack Rides does it. They are comfy, you feel safe and exposed at the same time.
Same, definitely my favorite restraints too.
This is the best random thing UA-cam has ever recommended to me.
I've always enjoyed rollercoaster rides but I've also always have had an irrational fear of my restraints coming off somehow. Now I feel waay better/safer thanks to this video :D

Thanks for watching. We're hoping to upload a video about overcoming a fear of roller coasters soon, perhaps that could help further :)
Read "restraints" as "restaurants," and was like, "Damn, they thinking of everything, but how's that gonna work?"
Roller Coaster Restaurants exist. There are about 8 around the world where your food comes to you on a track.
Lol
One such rollercoaster restaurant exists at Alton Towers. Based on videos I've seen, it's quite a clever and fun concept! Watching your food come to you on a little track is a fun, fresh new experience of sorts if it's your first time.
I want to know what it's like in the kitchen as they load the little carriage that carries your order, then they send it whizzing down the track to your table.
Looked it up. Looks interesting.
Those exist, there's one in alton towers
Some restraints are definitely better than others, like seriously though, does kingda ka really need over the shoulder?
SAVAGE ARMY sadly because of New Jersey state law all coasters over 299 feet must have OTSR. /:
@@junicstr13 :(
That seams useless
@@racingfan2897 It is
@@benxyb2791 no. If the coaster goes too fast for some reason, riders feel thrown out of their seats and the restraints keep them in

Head restraints > thigh restraints
Although the head restraints leave my skull with a dent in my skull and 2 concussions 💀
Yeah that's the problem with over the shoulder restraints
Then why do you even prefer over the shoulder restraints? Lap bars are clearly superior.
@@marcelwannieck It depends on the person so, why not both or choose your own restraints?
That’s why I like B&M’s rides: they are really smooth and minimise head bashing. Or those restraints that have cushions on either side to soften the blow.
As a larger than average man, I definitely prefer lap bars to over the shoulder restraints. Personally, I find B&M’s clamshell restraints to be the most comfortable.
YES! B&M clamshells are THE best of the best.
Same brother I went on a ride that had over the shoulder restraints and felt like I couldn’t breathe because I locked in to tight
Agree the clamshell is so nice its comfy and i can move my arms

“Over the shoulders were seen as more comfortable” ... yeah right 😂.
Right ! I HATE not being able to move around haha. I NEED space 😂I just avoid roller coasters at this point
I feel much safer with the over the shoulder restraints.. I'm scared I will fall out with just a lap bar, even though I know that super unlikely. But yeah they're not super comfortable physically
I'm short but tall enough and the shoulder restrains are so painful haha and they shove them down like chill mate I'm a whale
Luis X Luis I find it more comfortable
Can't seem to agree with that. I really don't like the feeling of my legs being squished on a ride.

The shoulder restraints with the vests are my favorites. I like the shoulder ones because I feel more secure, and since the best fits more snugly I feel additionally safer and also bang my head less. They are so much better than regular over the shoulder!!

Being a larger human
I hate this type of restraints, I've only seen them on giant coasters. either it's way too tight, or it's way too lose and it feels like you're going to fly out, you lift off your seat 4-5" when you're going down a hill, and the only thing to hang on to are two little handles.
Man, it's fun!
Reuben Willard ya
Congratulations on 1mil views!!! You really deserve more subscribers. Well done, Harry
Thank you, that really means a lot :)
This man didn’t wanna ride a ride so he studied
I’ve been on a ride that goes upside down that literally has an in-adjustable metal bar that you have to hold onto
Me too, a single lap bar you can escape out of.
I have to know the name of the ride 😂
were the inversions loops or anything else?
Favorite Restraints: B&M Vest OTS restraint
Least: Vekoma SLC OTS
Blast22 B&M vest just kill any airtime ..
SLC restraints.. Oh no. OH NO.
I already feel my head slamming from one "cushion" to the other...
Vekoma SLC OTS restraints are a blessing compared to stand-up coaster genital-crushing restraints.
I do feel safer when the restraints come with seatbelts.
LMFAO. They don't need them in most cases. Especially any B&M coaster, Arrow and more.
Me too lol
As a major coaster enthusiast this was actually delightly informative!!
That's awesome!
I love the over-the-shoulder and vest restraints 👏🏽👏🏽
Coaster personnel: your is a little bit loose last time it opened up, so don't pull too much.
Me: 😐
When this video appeared on my recommended today I was so excited, not only because I like to learn anything I can about rollercoasters and theme parks, but also to find out what the proper name for what I now know are called over-the-shoulder restraints, which should have been quite obvious to me for years, however since I was a child these have only ever been Wolverhamptons, don't ask me why, my mum just always called them that and I thought it was such a charming name, even if its namesake city is not so charming.
I like how we all just put our lives into one mechanism
there are failsafes so even if one fails, there's another one, sometimes many more to keep you safe anyway.
They have many different elements and for all elements to fail, is probably 1 in 1,000,000,000
We do the same when we drive though.
That’s why I love seatbelts, if the lap bar comes out you mostly like won’t come out
any time you get in a car you are putting your life in a much less safe mechanism. If people start dying on roller coasters everyday nobody will pay to ride them anymore. People already die in car accidents every day and it seems like nobody cares.
Simple Explanation: Restraints make you not die.
Most people are saying they prefer over-the-shoulder restraints, but i like the feeling of almost flying out of my seat! That’s the best part!
Now that's quirky

I like the lap bars that come over the shoulder to push down. The type that are now present on Universal Orlando's Velocicoaster. It feels secure and comfortable.
How are those different than normal lap bars, though?
@@triple7marc they explained why they feel more comfortable on them
I wish more people would see this because I feel like people have so many unrealistic fears. And knowing that there are several fail safes as well as the restraints not being able to be open until it docks back into the station would change some people's minds. Granted the videos that scare the crap out of people are from other countries that don't have the same safety regulations if any at all.
Why is this video so interesting and satisfying
