      well thats not exactly true unless a malfunction happens like what happened to me on the back seat of high roller at valleyfair. my friend's seatbelt was locked into place, but mine could still freely move throughout the ride. the plus side though is that they couldnt get my lap bar to go up so they had to use a special tool so i wouldn't have fallen out anyway.

    I associate lap bars with a chill, sort of "feel like I'm flying, wind in my hair" experience. Shoulder restraints are more like "this ride is going to be intense, mentally and physically prepare yourself." I love both! Completely different experiences but both equally enjoyable.

      I we to on a roller coaster that went upside down but you had to stand up. It's called hero. You stand in a little pod sliding your feet throu some metal gaps in the wall to stop you from smashing your legs. There is two handles at the front and a little window. One of the handles has twin on the side. One of them is at the very front. If you wanna see more search. Flamingo Land Hero PoV.

    Thanks for the detailed explanations about the restraints. I was not aware of the redundancy factor, so that was good to hear. I always wondered if there was some kind of a fail-safe for the restraints in case they malfunction. It’s nice to know that there is. My biggest fear when riding roller coasters is that the restraints will somehow fail and come open during the ride. This video was reassuring!

      In the extremely rare cases of someone falling out of a ride, it's almost never that the restraint failed mid-ride and popped open; when it's closed, it's staying closed until the end of the ride. It's usually that it was never sufficiently closed to hold the rider in in the first place. And that itself is a sign of a design and systems failure, because the ride should not be able to dispatch in that situation--usually leading to the restraints being modified to keep it from happening again.

      I'm starting to hate shoulder restraints on any ride. Just unnecessary. They only perhaps make sense on dive coasters (and then only on the front row) as you're hanging over the edge face down, but Hangtime does exactly that and has lapbars (not to mention a bunch of inversions too).

    The shoulder restraints with the vests are my favorites. I like the shoulder ones because I feel more secure, and since the best fits more snugly I feel additionally safer and also bang my head less. They are so much better than regular over the shoulder!!

    Being a larger human
    I hate this type of restraints, I've only seen them on giant coasters. either it's way too tight, or it's way too lose and it feels like you're going to fly out, you lift off your seat 4-5" when you're going down a hill, and the only thing to hang on to are two little handles.
    Man, it's fun!

      You mean Pepsi Max in Blackpool Pleasure Beach? Never again. Idk how it is now, but it was my first rollercoaster, and for the longest time, it was my last. EDIT: it's confirmed, they still have the same dingy loose-ass seat belt and metal rod in the front to hold onto...

    • @living4usgnv
      @living4usgnv 5 років тому

      The vests suck on the few I've been on. They do kill most of the potential airtime, especially on Banshee & Wild Eagle. Some vest restraints constrict when riding also. On Wild Eagle, for example, it was crushing my chest midway through the course, and wasn't very pleasurable. Wing Coasters are already the most boring B&M model (to me), that didn't help my view of them. Gatekeeper's wasn't so bad, but they ruin any sort of freedom I'm able to get from the old OSTRs. Banshee could be the best if it had the old ones.
      I do agree that the old Vekoma OTSRs are the worst. Their vest-like OTSRs are much more comfortable, but are still somewhat restrictive on space (I'm a hands-up kinda person).

    When this video appeared on my recommended today I was so excited, not only because I like to learn anything I can about rollercoasters and theme parks, but also to find out what the proper name for what I now know are called over-the-shoulder restraints, which should have been quite obvious to me for years, however since I was a child these have only ever been Wolverhamptons, don't ask me why, my mum just always called them that and I thought it was such a charming name, even if its namesake city is not so charming. Thank you for this video, it was so interesting to learn more about such a topic.

    • @MattMcIrvin
      @MattMcIrvin 2 роки тому +1

      Now I'm fascinated by the question of *why* someone would call over-the-shoulder restraints "Wolverhamptons". There seems to be no public trace of this so maybe your mother coined the term! I found a video of them in use at a funfair ride there, but funfair rides happen in a lot of places...

    • @oliviamccormack855
      @oliviamccormack855 2 роки тому

      @@MattMcIrvin Your reply actually made me go and ask her about this, cause to be honest I never even thought to question the process behind naming them. But apparently it goes even deeper than just my mum, she got the term from a friend of her's who started calling them that, and sadly there's no way now to find out why he called them that either. Regardless, I think it's such a fun name for them, even without knowing the true meaning, but it is quite peculiar why that city of all places was used to name them, especially as you say there's barely any link between Wolverhampton and theme parks. It's open to interpretation at this point, maybe one day an answer will be found.

    Another notable thing: S&S uses a combination Hydraulic-Ratcheting restraint system on their modern rides from my experience working Power Tower at Cedar Point, which got the new system added this year. I don't know the exact workings though, just that we have to independently lock the hydraulics after the ratcheting system.

    I wish more people would see this because I feel like people have so many unrealistic fears. And knowing that there are several fail safes as well as the restraints not being able to be open until it docks back into the station would change some people's minds. Granted the videos that scare the crap out of people are from other countries that don't have the same safety regulations if any at all.
