    In today’s video I dive in and take a look to see if Tempo for the Sega 32x really is as average as it’s reputation suggests. Enjoy!

      I don't remember if I addressed that in the review, but I agree, Tempo as a character is terrific. Miles ahead of most platformer characters of the 90's.

    This game's visuals are simply breathtaking... I've owned it since 1997, and got it for $9.99 new which I think is a bargain for the beauty one beholds while playing this game... "Another platformer" sure, but they at least took it to the next level presentation wise, and has, and will end up being a criminally under experienced game which is a shame. I for one greatly appreciate the effort that was put into this game, despite the writing already being on the wall for its platform of release by the time it came to market. Thank you Kris for shining a light on this game in which very few others have, it truly deserves to be showcased in some extended form like you have so at least some people can see the magnificent work that was done on a console practically everyone wrote off.

    I would like to own this game for its graphics alone. Simply gorgeous.
    I have a question. Do you own every game you review or do you use emulators, or some other stuff like for example Everdrive?

    • @implantgames
      @implantgames  7 років тому +11

      Tempo is a beauty! Every game reviewed is from my collection and is recorded using real hardware and a retail copy of the game. I don't own any flashcarts and I don't use emulation. I'm not against either and encourage folks to enjoy old games in any way they see fit, I'm just more of a purist myself.

    I discovered this game and started playing it myself recently, and I gotta say, it's decent. I like this game, it's pretty fun, Rhythm Heaven-style mini-games and all. Super-surreal, which greatly appeals to me. Game's got some boopin' tunes, too, appropriately enough!

    Great review, interesting pick this week! Now I'm curious about the Saturn sequel as well. Is it any better? The visual style is amazing, but it's really hectic at the same time.
    Somehow it reminds me of Toejam &a Earl 2 Panic on Funkotron, which is one of my all time favorite games. Probably because of the funky music, and music being a theme throughout the game. You ever plan on reviewing that one? It's a real gem 💎

    Funny, I was thinking of Rayman the entire time before you mentioned it. A problem I have with a lot of these late platformers, especially Western ones but Japanese too, is the lack of consideration for camera distance / screen size. It's clear just watching a bit of Tempo that there are timed elements that move on and off screen, blind jumps (albeit not into pits), and a general lack of one-move-ahead visibility that sets the rhythm and tempo of an effective platformer. I'm inclined to blame the use of larger, more detailed sprites for the loss of this key design ingredient - I think no one really noticed what they were losing, because the idea of a camera in a 2D game is kind of abstract.

    I'd like to have an entire Genesis build with the CD and 32X attached one of these days and I always wondered how Tempo was. The flaws are definitely there even from looking at footage alone but it still looks like a cool game to play mostly due to how its looks as far as old 90's games go. Unfortunately, many 32X games are rising to really high prices so I'm not sure if I'll ever have a chance to try this one out without an emulator and I personally don't care for emulators to use for my own enjoyment. Perhaps a flashcart or repro may suffice, but nothing beats an original copy. Anyways, this was a great video for a not-so well known 32X title, thanks! :)

    I think probably the best thing about this game is the visuals. Idk, maybe i'm just a sucker for visually pleasing games but I can't help but want to play the game just to look at it artistically. It's kinda a shame that gameplay wise, it couldn't be as great. :( I'm telling ya, if they got the gameplay right, this be an underrated gem on the 32X. Still though, i'll give it a shot. Why not? Maybe at best, i'll get a visually pleasing experience. And at worst, a little annoying.

  • @abaroners
    @abaroners 7 років тому +2

    Very informative review! Thanks for that.
    But I have to disagree with one of your claims: when say that at first glance it doesn't seem to be doing anything that a stock Genesis or Super Nintendo couldn't do as well.
    While I've heard similar claims elsewhere, this is completely wrong.
    The backgrounds, handled entirely by the 32X, are *clearly* out of the range of what any tile-based system of the 4th gen could do (the 32X video architecture is not tile-based), maybe with the exception of the Neo Geo. Maybe.
    It would be either too much dynamic tiles needed to do it (completely absurd in terms of VRAM bandwidth you'd need to be able to pull it off, to begin with) or just too many sprites sprites per scanline to be able to look anything like that (if trying to "fake" it with sprites) or not enough background layers to accommodate all the huge fruits moving around, for an example.
    X68000, Mega Drive + Mega CD, PC Engine SuperGrafx, Super Nintendo with on-cart chip; forget about it, they wouldn't be able to pull it off.
    To be very honest, I think the 3DO would also struggle massively performance-wise with this game. One of the clever uses of the 32X + Genesis combo here is to have the Genesis running the foreground + characters at 60 fps. Forget about the 3DO handling all of that + the crazy backgrounds at a high frame rate. Heck, I doubt the 3DO could pull it off even if targeting 30 fps. It's just too much shit going on.
    So, to summarize, while you really don't see stuff that looks absurdly stunning to the eyes, it's doing a lot by having backgrounds and bosses designed around the 32X architecture; the rest of the game designed around the Genesis hardware and both being competently combined for the most part.

    This looks very medicare. I tend to notice that some times mediocre games get more notice than they deserve on a system with few games like AVP on the Jaguar and Zombie Revenge on the Dreamcast. This game I guess didn't get that benefit because i have never heard of it. But I do own a Jag and a DC so maybe if I owned a 32x I might of heard of it.

    @ABlackFalcon 7 років тому +2

    Tempo is a decent game and it can be fun, but that glacially slow walk speed really makes it hard to stick with. The game gets boring after a while, it's too slow and simple to hold up.
    As for the graphics, I think that the foregrounds (sprites, platforms, and such) are mostly done by the Genesis, and the 32X does the often crazy backgrounds. Tempo is mostly a game that could have run on the Genesis, but no way could the Genesis done most of the games' backgrounds!

    • @implantgames
      @implantgames  7 років тому

  • @FastTquick
    @FastTquick 7 років тому +5

    I find the graphics to be a bit amusing at best and all over the place at worst. There are a lot of assets that look hand-drawn like Tempo and Katty while some of the bosses and the background elements look like they're made in CG on Silicon Graphics workstations. Also, it seems to be a trademark for Red Corporation to put evil-looking eyes on a few enemies and random objects.

    • @implantgames
      @implantgames  7 років тому +1

      There is some inconsistencies with the backgrounds for sure. Downtown Performance is very artsy, yet the background in Indigestion look very CG like you noted. Speaking of eyes, the eyes in the background of the Circus Performance boss look just like Mater!

  • @loganjorgensen
    @loganjorgensen 6 років тому +1

    That vintage '95 GPs review is idiotic, you'd be hard pressed to do any of these effects on a stock GEN/MD. This is actually one of the few 32X games that uses the hardware fully, in particular on screen color count and 32X vibrancy. If it seems low in color that's just because it's a cartoon look and the gradient effects use up a lot of palette entries. And really there is too much graphics on the screen, testament to performance but bad for the game.
    Strange all the simple defects in the gameplay, perhaps they ran out of time to elaborate and improve there designs, I think most 32X games were rush jobs. The levels are fun but the Bosses are a grind for sure. Yes Super Tempo is better but of coarse it is, dedicated 32-bit 2D power.
