The Most Powerful Guard Passing System

  • This video I go over in my opinion the single most effective guard passing system in jiu jitsu. Its so easy to force your opponent to this position, once you get to the strong inside leg position your opponent has only a few options. Most common response from your opponent will be to control your ankle and play the de la riva guard. Once you learn the basics of the normal and reverse leg drag, the knee cut and folding pass, and the de la riva smah, its very difficult for your opponent to defend. If you like this content be sure to comment and let me know what you would like to see in future videos.

    I love this system of passing! I learned a similar setup from Lovato's headquarters instructional, but he didn't have the emphasis you give on stepping in to the left hamstring or all the stuff about what to do if you can't trap their leg (which I often can't). Thank you for all the great content, and for all the effort it must take!

    • @JonThomasBJJ

      No problem happy to help, yeah it’s very similar to the Lovato HQ stuff just instead you stay taller and focus more on controlling the dlr leg

    Love this system. Love the variations so we know what to do in each varied instance.
    When you were in St Louis at your seminar in Arnold you mentioned a drill that you recommended where guys take turns playing a position but at some point one guy is supposed to succeed. This way you can train and resist but the full 100% competitive nature is bypassed for a drill that allows you to brainstorm and try different things.
    For a future video suggestion is there any way you can do a video explaining this drill more in depth?

    • @JonThomasBJJ
      @JonThomasBJJ  2 роки тому +4

      Yeah one hundred percent I can do a conversation with espen maybe both about sweep and pass drill and specific training. Look forward to visiting St. Louis again.

    I love your mix of videos. Sometimes you do short techniques. In this case, you teach more of a concept which is also very necessary.

    I don't understand how you can step in close to the opponents body and avoid getting swept. When your foot is close enough to their hands, isn't that prime for an ankle grab and some form or control or sweep?

    Tried this earlier. Had no clue what else to do but just remembered to step deep in and remember chest to chest. I always have problems starting from the knees. Today I just stood back up and stepped into the seated guard and pressured down on my opponent. It works! Thanks!

    • @JonThomasBJJ
      @JonThomasBJJ  2 роки тому +1

      Yeah staying close makes everything so much more dangerous for the guard player it’s so unpredictable for them what you will attack with and the timing to defend is so fast

    I notice you don't put your right hand on their chest to pin them (like Marcelo Garcia does) - what are the pros/cons of that and why don't you do it?

    • @JonThomasBJJ
      @JonThomasBJJ  2 роки тому +1

      I don’t like to in de La Riva because then I expose a strong collar grip for them to control my base and sweep with. I will control the lapel and pin them more when I am in a passing finishing position though.

      Yeah a lot of Leandro mixed with few other systems, Leandro doesn’t break grips as much like Meregali, also Leandro doesn’t work the folder pass system in. I like to mix from a lot of different styles.

    This is BS. Using one of the most dynamic, athletic grapplers in history as a reference is crazy. Does it work? I guess but good luck stepping into a high level guard where the person on bottom just lays there with no grips established 😂
