This was THE Santa Claus Christmas movie if you were a kid in the 80's. My Family still watches this as a classic every year. I have no idea why it fell into obscurity over the years.
born at the tail-end of the 80's. my grandmom would put this movie on for me every Christmas!
havent seen it since the 90's ; just watching this reaction had me having flashbacks to sitting with my cousins on my grandmoms couch :)
Omg my childhood favorite Christmas movie! This Santa IS the real Santa! 😂🎅🏽
Merry Christmas guys!❤❤❤
This is a great movie that is an effective origin story for Santa.
This man is one of my favorite Santa Claus actors.
I cannot believe you guys are watching this movie. This is my ultimate favorite Christmas Movie of all time and I actually just found this movie the other day at the video store and I bought it! You two just made my day! Thank you very much 🙌 as a kid I was infatuated with the Magical Candy Canes......and how could you ever go wrong with Dudley Moore!
Merry Christmas to you and your Family! 🎄🎁🧤🧣
FOR FREEEEE!!!!! 😂 Merry Christmas 🎅🎄🎁⛄️❄️🦌🔔🤶❤️💚
I love that line
Mr Movies, i hadn't thought about this film in ages. Thank ya for watching it. Now, I'm going to find a copy and rewatch it myself. Good memories, I always enjoyed Dudley Moore movies.
Burgess Meredith was not a previous Santa, he was just an old elf (Credited as "Ancient Elf"). Santa was a prophecy they had and that's why they were waiting for Chris, not because he was replacing someone.
I thought he was old father time but not a previous Santa.
In the Mcdonald's Book of the movie, He had this great living quarters with his beard serving as soft bedding
Merry Christmas! This was also a favorite of mine growing up in the 80’s. Dudley Moore is just great. Love his performance in Arthur.
I was petrified of Santa as a kid, still am, but this was the only Santa movie I watched because he didn’t creep me out plus it’s not sickly sweet and smaltzy. I also liked that the reindeer were characters as well as the rest of the cast.
Wait... we're getting to see this f-f-f-f-f-f-f-f... FOR FREE??!!??!
Well played.
"That's not how we do it HERE!! In a free enterprise system!!"
I adore the film, got the 4K seen it a million times, the Sheena Easton song is a banger and best on screen Santa bar non.
Merry Christmas to you and your family. Thanks for this. John Lithgow chews the scenery in every scene he's in.
Fun fact: The actor playing Santa is The Big Lebowski.
He's Mr Lebowski. Jeff Bridges is The Dude.
@@tremorsfan yeah…well… that’s just your opinion man 😂
He's also the guy in Blazing Saddles that says "Fuck that shit, HERE COMES MONGO!"
Santa freezing to death and being resurrected has got to be the darkest origin story ever.
Umm...
There's literally a movie where Santa is a demon from Hell forced to do good deeds
@@AllanTidgwell But that's not an origin story movie.
There's the David Harbour one where Santa was a viking warrior
This movie is why I have a coke with Christmas dinner every single time. Yay subliminal advertising to kids I guess😅
I remember going to see this at the movie theater when I was a youngster. 🎄MERRY CHRISTMAS 🎄
LIES! ALL LIES!
Born in 81 ive never had a wooden riding toy, plastic has existrd my entire life and battlecat as a riding toy is the greatest thing ever
It's very much a classic. It came on the heels of the Richard Donner Superman movies and was headed by the same production team after Superman III. It wasn't a huge success at the box office, but was played all of the time on TV in the 80's and 90's. Then, it practically disappeared. Networks are the reason it's not so popular now. It's a great time with some great performances, but certainly has the charm of nostalgia going for it. I try and watch it once every Christmas.
I'm also very fond of this movie. It's a shame it became so forgotten over time as its the only santa clause movie I ever liked
I watched the heck out of this every Christmas as a kid in the 90s.
An old favourite I've not seen in years. Thank you for this memory.
This is 100% a Christmas classic. I saw this in the theaters and it became my number one Christmas go to every year. I've been a fan of Dudley Moore for many years. The whole wonder you get from this story is something that brings you back to your childhood.
In my opinion this is the best Santa Clause movie ever made during it's time. Duddly More was one of my favorite actors then. Excellent movie and thank you for sharing your thoughts on it. Merry Christmas Mr and Mrs Movies stay safe and blessed. Take care.
Burgess Meredith is credited as an Ancient Elf.
I once heard that all the toys made and bought for the Santa's workshop scenes were donated to children's charities for Christmas after shooting was complete.
McDonald's had a happy meal tie-in and I remember the toy was a Crayola marker.
I loved wooden toys in the 80s. My grandfather and uncle would build things for my sister and i every year. I had a ride on truck with a dump bed, and i still have a really fancy sailboat. she had a huge doll house that was a castle with hidden rooms and things.
When this first came out I went to see it at the cinema with my school. A true Christmas memory. I was so excited when it came out on vhs. Being an 80s kid it was so cool seeing the A team van in the background when Patch is looking at the tvs in the window
''1985... before your time..'' man, I feel old.
I 100% beleive burgess marrideth is father time
THANK YOU!!! Best Santa movie ever! Was hoping it would be on TV this Christmas, which it wasn't, so it's great to see a reaction to it.
The Movies digging deep into the '80s vault for this classic. I don't think I've seen this movies since the late 80's on VHS.
It’s very much a classic!
Absolutely ❤
I was born in 1983, and I had this on a VHS tape that was full of cartoons amd given to me on my 2nd birthday. Im guessing it was recorded onto the tape at some point after 1985 lol. Anyway, my mom and I would watch it every year. It even beats out A Christmas Story which I watch teligiously haha. So glad you two decided to throw it on as Ive never seen it on any streaming platform
Merry Christmas, Mr and Mrs and the Movies!
Fun facts for you
1. Every time John Lithgow comes to the UK for work, he always ends up signing merchandise as its so beloved here
2. When not required for filming, the two kids would run around the sets on the next stage chased by Huddleston and Moore in full costume.. This was the Pinewood Studios and the other sets where the ones for James Bond
3. Because the film required working puppets and minutes on a scale and skill level to make it believable, the production turned to former members of the Gerry Anderson productions who came out of retirement in some cases
4. After filming, the wooden toys used in the tunnel and workshop scenes were donated to local charities - I own one of the puppet clowns I believe one that Anya brushes past
This is my absolute favourite CHristmas movie of all time!!!
I was just watching this last night! Great production/costume design, a terrific score by Henry Mancini, a wild performance by John Lithgow and a pitch perfect one by David Huddleston.
Also, the 4k disc has this disclaimer: "Please note that this film reflects historical attitudes which audiences may find outdated or offensive." Huh???
Elves weren't a protected demographic back then like they are now. Back then, you could be elfist all you wanted and no one would say anything. After the Enchanted Life Fairness Act of 1987, Elves, Gnomes, and Dwarves were granted equality like well known entities, such as Santa, The Easter Bunny, and The Tooth Fairy. Eventually, others were added, but that's a story for another time.
guys gave me flashbacks of my early childhood dancing/watching this movie on Christmas at grandmoms house
This takes me back. I haven’t seen this movie in years. I remember going to see it at the movies when it first came out.
this is a forgotten classic!!!
I saw this with my sister in the theater in 1985.....LOVED IT! i was convinced at 5 that this was the real santa claus....
Merry Christmas you two and to your family as well. Thank you for reacting to this movie. It’s a very special movie for me as well as others. I gotta watch it at least once every Christmas.
This was probably my favourite santa movie
The elves with speaking parts are/were all British character actors known for being short in stature. So, alongside Dudley Moore, we have John Barrard, Anthony O’Donnell, Christopher Ryan, Melvyn Hayes and Don Estelle.
Merry Christmas you guys. I saw this in the theater. Seriously underrated.
They use to play this often on HBO during the 80s. Stop more or less in the early 90s. Watched it all the time as a kid.
This is my favorite Christmas movie ever. I watch it every year!
⛄🎁🎄Merry Christmas Mr and Mrs movies and family ❤🙏
I seen this movie in THEATER in 85.. Loved it .. one of my favorites ! :D Thanks for the reaction and watch !
I saw it in the theater too, I was 8 years old.
@@scottp.5055snap 😊
Merry Christmas Mr. & Mrs. Movies, you both take care and I wish y'all and the family a great holiday
I remember seeing this in elementary school on VHS. Its not a top tier movie by any means, but I love it because of the nostalgia it holds for me. I try to watch it every December.
I always thought that Burgess Meredith was playing 'Old Father Time,' not a previous Santa type.
43:37 how dare you say Rudolph isn’t real. He’s the only way Santa can deliver gifts when it’s foggy out.
Love this movie. When I think of Santa, it’s this one.
If patch was a really inventive else, he would’ve shown the other elves. How did your injection molded plastic?
I was 6 years old when this came out and John Lithgow is just incredible here with his over the top acting.
You want more 80s cheese to check out, you guys should check out Cloak & Dagger (1984). I don't think anybody has reacted to that one yet.
This movie gets shown most Christmases in the UK it a cult favourite here.Loved John Lithgows performance always.
This was the movie that taught me that puce was a color.
Greatest reaction team.
Merry christmas
This one here will always be My Favorite
Mine too
Love this film I was 13 years old when I seen this at the cinema also here in the uk the goonies and back to the future was playing as well!🙂
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! Good tidings of tender and joy to all!
The hug & kiss interaction reminded me of that scene in I Love You Man. "I dont think she ..... his ....".
For Christmas got... Yours & Others Company, TY- Merry Christmas!
Good night before Christmas even by this time was way beyond its copyright
I remember seeing this at the theater. I had the McDonald's collectors glasses that went with it too.
Theme song for the movie was 'Shouldn't Do That' by Kaja, which you hear briefly in the McD scene. They had changed their name from Kajagoogoo a year or so earlier - always a sign things are going well for a band. Supergirl then this were what killed the Salkind's independent movie making career after hitting it big with the Superman franchise.
underrated classic, one of the best Christmas films ever but doesnt crop up very often :(
I remember seeing this movie IN THEATERS and loving it; to be fair I haven’t seen it since, LOL.
I still watch this movie every year. Love it
I loved this movie as a kid. I was three when it came out and watched it often after we moved back to the states. Its goof of a movie and definitely more for kids to watch. John Lithgow is fantastic as a moustache-twirling villain. I don't think Burgess Meredith ever thinks a role is beneath him. He took being the oldest elf seriously as well as voicing Golobulous in G.I. Joe The Movie. Yo..........Joe! Merry Christmas everyone!
"I don't think Burgess Meredith ever thinks a role is beneath him."
I think that probably has to do with him being blacklisted from acting in the 50s and early 60s for refusing to name names to Joe McCarthy. When he was able to act again (largely thanks to being cast as the Penguin in "Batman"), he just did everything he could.
@ConstantineFurman I didn't know that. Thanks for the info.
Merry Christmas You and Me and Movies. You are amazing reaction Movies.
Burgess Meredith was Father Time.
Don't you think if he were, he would've been credited as such rather than "Ancient Elf"? People would recognize the concept of Father Time.
This is my fave BUT i will say i kinda wish the set in the past parts were longer
It's so funny seeing this film with this quality. Our VHS copy made it look like everyone had jaundice.
Mrs. The Movies kept mentioning how weird this movie is--y'all don't know the half of it. They actually shot footage of John Lithgow's frozen corpse floating around in space and that was the original ending of the movie! That's why the ending as is now seems so... kinda random and choppy? Somebody involved with the production finally stepped in and said "Uh, no." I really don't understand how anyone making the movie thought that was okay for this sort of film. Honestly, I'd have found that objectionable even in "Violent Night."
"Santa Claus" used to be on TV quite a bit in the 80s (particularly on ABC), but starting in the 90s, it disappeared for the longest time. In recent years, it's made something of a comeback. AMC aired it once this year... at 3 in the morning (or close to it). It had a few airings on Epix/MGM's channel. I think a lot of its lack of standing could be that back when the movie was in fullscreen on television, it looked absolutely hideous. The print was just horrible and ugly looking and unappealing. But then Anchor Bay put out that DVD where it was in its original scope format and a beautiful new remastered print, and gave the film a new life and it's kinda catching on again.
This turned into peter pan for some reason for like 5 minutes then its back to christmas
He's always been my true Santa just as Keaton is my batman Reeves is my superman. Tim Allen could never be compared to David Huddleston
I always felt the same way
This is the only santa clause movie i ever liked. A true 80s classic
My favorite Christmas movie
i just realized santa was played by the guy who played mr lebowski the guy in the chair
Later on these kids helped a group of dinosaurs find their way to the Museum of Natural History
You should watch The Holdovers one of these days. It came out last year, but it's already becoming a Christmas classic.
Merry Christmas! 🎄🎁
i had totally forgot about this movie...its great
This hasn’t held up well, but I love this movie when it came out
This was my favourite Christmas movie as a kid. It plays a lot in the UK. Now that I'm older, I prefer to stop the movie when we get to John Lithgow's story. The first half is so magical, the second half is weird and doesn't make sense.
Latin is actually important if you want a high status job. Doctors and lawyers both require an understanding of Latin
This is st. Nicolas real life santa clause
All I remember is how intimidating John Lithgow was to me as a kid.
I've never seen this before. I don't think I've missed much.
I haven't seen this movie since I was at least 8-9 years old. So it's been a while.
I want to say I had this book on tape or something…I remember parts of this but like the Mr it’s been since at least 1986 that I’ve seen this.
Looking at this now at the age of 44 and not 5 when the movie came out, pretty sure he froze to death at the beginning with his wife and they died. The north pole is his version of heaven and the Elfs are angels. Everything really points to that now that I am looking at it as a adult.
Love this movie btw.
“He better watch out for that Abdominal Snowman.” Is that Abdominal Snowman ripped and have a six pack? That’s the Abominable Snowman’s name after hitting the gym. 🤣
i love this movie grew up watching it
Have a hap hap happy Hollyday , and married Christmas way ❗🇨🇦 🎅
When I was a kid I watch this movie so much I ruin the VSH tape, no joke. I remember this movie a few years ago, and my mom was tell me that I would watch this movie in July, Soooo. This was a blast from the past.
John Lithgow and his deadly toys😮
I remember watching this for the first time as an adult and making the most awful jokes about the looks the rich little girl gave the homeless boy
