Instead of spending so much on the PN Daytona which has reached the edge of stupidity price-wise, I bought myself the vintage Zenith El Primero Rainbow chronograph, and the Tudor Big Block panda dial. Both watches altogether cost me under $8K, and they are beautiful, classic watches that you can wear everyday. And you know what...I'm a very happy man!
That last sentence is the most important job of a job. A purchase should be 90% centered around that. Funny thing is that 90% of people don't realize this.
+Albert N. Well that's cool!!! You dont HAVE TO HATE the paul newman daytonuh, MAN! You can have those watches and be happy. A price is a price. if a watch is awesome and CLASSIC, POPULAR, VINTAGE, TIMELESS. Then it is. price wont be low usually.... Simple as that. you can do how you want to.
I love the feel of my circa 1998 stainless steel Daytona with the beautifully aged white dial and the idonic El Primero movement.....the only watch in my collection that I wouldn't sell.
absolutely very informative and additive video on series of daytona, i particularly like the daytona 6241 so much that i had decided 5 minutes ago that i put in an order to buy the Steinhart Ocean One Vintage Chronograph White.
@ Rich Buddy : and yet with all his money Floyd Weather will probably not be able to buy : - one Patek Philippe 5175R Grandmaster Chime - one CHRONOGRAPH by Hajime Asaoka for example because the owners won't probably sell them and there are only 5 to six In the World if I am not mistaken. And Floyd will probably also have to wait in the line like many millionnaires and billionaires to get their hands on a Patek Philippe Skymoon, Floyd will have to fill in an application and wait like every other possible buyer. In the meantime he will buy an easy to get huge ugly Hublot with power reserve :-)
Could anyone tell me the exact differences in the dial @ 3:00 He mentions that they are slightly different but does not say how. Any info would be appreciated.
I remember these were $400 watches in the sixties , the only smart collectors are the ones 'selling' them today to chumps for 10s or even 100s of thousands of $ !
mrarch and in the late 80s early 90s, a used daytona could be very affordable (maybe not the PN but other steel versions). Just like the speedmaster pro. My uncle had a few. They were expensive but not unnatainable luxury boutique goods.
The dream watch. The 6263 with a white panda dial is absolutely gorgeous. Unfortunately I don't think i'm going to spend a million on a watch anytime soon. I hope i do get one of these someday.
Watching this in 2024, seeing an 18K gold variant for a mere $78K, crying. $150K-$250K, MUCH more for PN variants now. "The market is at its highest point now" LOLOLOLOLOL
I just ordered one of those. After having seen this video I now know that the Alpha is an amalgamation, though. Normally the Alpha should have a two color dial since it has the screw down chronograph pushers. Nonetheless can’t wait for it to arrive because that panda dial is just gorgeous and I don’t have the 350000 Euro for an original one. Does your Alpha already have the column wheel chronograph movement? And do you think about the bracelet? Is it really that bad?
@@pacovl46 I bought mine on a leather strap. I haven't seen the bracelet in the flesh but it does look poor - the clasp in particular looks flimsy. Yes mine has the column wheel movement and it looks great through the display case back. It also keeps decent time - gaining just a few seconds a day. Hope you are pleased with yours
@@chrispenn715 thanks for the reply. Someone in another video said it’s better than the entry level Seiko bracelets. A year, mine is gonna go on a Nato strap anyway. Can’t wait for it to arrive.
Ive got the alpha Daytona, it looks amazing. Dont worry about the bracelet, it's about the same quality as a 60s, 70s or 80s Daytona! Jingly jangly but they were like that on the real deal!
There are some generic brand tributes out there selling for around 200 bucks, little more. I would advice, try them, gorgeous aesthetical pieces, along the early Monacos
Does anyone know how one operates the 'Units per hour' dial? I bought one of these and Rolex did not give any instructions about this dial - perhaps its all completely meaningless?
It's for measuring speed, for example, if you use the unit kilometers then you start the timer at 0 meters and stop it at 1 km and the hand points to the speed you're going in kilometers per hour. Same if you use miles instead
So much better than today's offerings. Same with the Sub. It's always love/hate with Rolex, like so many folks, but modern Rolexes are too big and chunky and flashy.
37.5mm 6263 and 36.85mm earlier non oyster case - the 6263/6265 really are a nicer feel as lugs case width crown and pushers are more substantial as is bracelet - given the demographic exotic dials are £200-300k it means the more popular at the time panda and reverse panda non exotic are the next investment hotspots currently at £60-£80k. My fave is the funnily enough the cheapest oyster the 6265 with black sigma dial it's an amazing piece.
In my opinion not. You'd rather save up a bit more and buy a vintage one. The current collection Daytona that Rolex sells are quite ugly in my opinion, and they devalue pretty quick.
Martijn Groot You would have to save up more than a bit to buy a vintage Daytona as the prices are astronomical. A 'Paul Newman' would cost about $100,000
PD Nance I wasnt talking about a PN. Just a ´normal´ 6265 will set you back $30k. Obviously more then a new one, but as an investment this is a way better bet. Or maybe, if you dont want to spend as much, a nice Zenith movement Daytona, way better then the current ones.
The Zenith 400 El Primero movement (1988-2000) Daytona is, according to many experts, the best value Daytona out there. Very solid and accurate, that Zenith 400 was regarded as one of the best chronograph movements at the time. One will set you back 8 - 15K. In my honest opinion, that's good value when compared to an early Daytona. I love the "Paul Newman" models, but they´re stupid expensive at the moment. Buy one if you can!! I wish I could...
lol PN worn this watch only as a prop on that movie, and everyone it's like grail, grail, wth crazy people. I love watches, but dang not that that, a Dan Henry panda it's just as beautiful to wear as that Rolex, just depends how one wears it and looks on the wrist.
Its popular because rolex is the best watch brand (not watch maker) they tied themself to so many great names and accomplishments that people value that you unable to escape that. Btw those rolexes are the best watches with the great valjoux 72 movement, modified and really well finished, IMO
Ikr. They just had one go for a little over $40,000 in their shop. They're beautiful watches and all but the high pedestal these are held upon is rediculous.
Historical relevance always has and always will influence prices collectors are willing to pay for watches -- or most any collectible for that matter. It's just part of the esoteric nature of collecting; demand can be generated from totally non-quantifiable anecdotes and perceptions. That's part of the fun really. Don't get me wrong, that wouldn't be enough to sway me from the 6263 two-tone panda dial - just is what it is
FYI Paul Said many, many yrs ago why do i need a Rolex that tells two time zones. He went on to say my Timex tells good time and i can add three hrs or subtract three hrs! fact
Why wear a watch at all? Why wear anything besides monochromatic jumpsuits everyday? Why drive anything besides a Toyota Camry? Why spend money on spices that don't promote the nutritional value of food? Why wear cologne?
Richard Scott That the interest in watches transcends their present utilitarian relevance, just like virtually any other product or service we consume on a daily basis. Any attempt to view them through such a reductionist lens is asinine at best. That help, Rich?
I think PN Daytona will lose value in years to come to be honest, the new Daytonas are less expensive and more beautiful, and just like me I don't give a fuck who is Paul Newman
Paul Newman hated the Daytona and would snap at any watch geeks that asked about it. Rolex made a bundle without sharing the profits for a watch he didn’t wear. He preferred the date-just that he wore in The Color of Money. He also wore digital watches towards the end of his life. Sorry....... #ripOff

Still isn't a PN. There's a reason it's collectible, and unless you're a serious collector, you won't fully appreciate the appeal.
Paul Newman Daytona is probably the most collectible watch in the game

That collection is honestly probably not over 100k. Look up some Patek Philippes. In particular grand complication. Those get up there quite a bit.

Those are all very very rare that’s an incredible set
What's the difference between the ref. 6263 and ref. 6240?

Wow! Speechless

Prices are going up like crazy and my prediction is that the Daytona owned by Paul Newman will sell at auction for $17.5 million.
How come all the Daytonas are referred to as Paul Newmans and not just his particular reference? It's curious.
Need one of these for the sub!
