Let's Talk YouTube: Dislikes & Trolls

- This is an older video. It's one of a handful of videos I wanted to copy from my other channel. Apologies if you've already seen it.
Learning from others is a lot of what makes UA-cam such an inspiring community. If someone has an opinion and wants to share it I appreciate it. Even if that opinion is, "I didn't really like this."

Peter, I dont know if you know, but this isn't resin. :p
I was not sure untill you told me. But thanks ill keep that in mind for later.😜
I don't know about you, but this video sure is resin-ating with me...
I'm resin-ting your tone.
Lily Does Art This is the comment I was looking for!
Dislikeeeeeeeeee!!!!!!!!
"I'll just burn your bridge down." This is one reason I love you! You would burn it down, then use the charred remains in the next dip it! Thanks for making me smile today!
Isn't that what Pete did by taking this video from his defunct channel?
In all seriousness, Peter is one of my favorite UA-camrs out there, and his content is awesome to see. His personality and creativity inspires many of us in exactly the way you described, Rita.
Surely he lets Mrs. Brown burn the bridge down? I'm sure she'd enjoy it more...
Haha
Peter is such a dad 😊 he has such a wholesome and encouraging channel
you are right that is the problem, people labeling constructive criticism as "haters" and "trolls". just as you said, if someone says "you smell like poop" its just a troll. but "i didnt like the project (because)" is criticism! people dont get that. and this is one of the many reasons why i looove this channel so much. peter just does what he loves and whatever comes out, he shows us. once a while he will try a new style of video or project and see how it goes! and is not immediately like either "you all suck, i like that video you are wrong" or "oh no you didnt like it i will never make a video again". healthy way to look at things you have right there. thats why i've been around this channel for YEARS now and will stay here for the manx more to come! a good balance of things. love it, keep going the way you are peter!!!
Very well stated. A lot of people just don't know how to take criticism and grow from it or just let it go. I'm with you, love this channel.
spot on. the like and dislike buttons are just an avenue for people to provide feedback. hopefully if they smash that thumbs down, they'll also provide a comment stating why they didn't like it, or what could be improved, but at the end of the day, i guess its just about discerning what's feedback and whats trolls.
that sucks man :( i guess like the video here stated, some ppl just get hung up on dumb stuff, and can't take criticism. you tried, cant do anything at that point but let 'em be butthurt.
statistically, 6 out of 7 dwarfs aren't happy
Haha! I see what you did there..
Statistically, 9 out of 11 Americans will be offended bye this...
Hahaha
@@mrferris4379 statysticali, aye and yu cant spell
Lol, nice!
Two things:
1- I am very surprised that this video does not have more thumbs down marks for irony’s sake. (I think the content is very good)
2- I think you should cast cereal into a cereal bowl. Maybe do a double pour so the lower half looks like milk on the cereal with a clear pour for the upper rim of the bowl. You may choose the cereal 😃
No let's make him make it out of honey grams.
YAAAAS!
I love this idea! 😃
Jon Brown
I really ‚like‘ this idea 😎
thumbs down out of irony
I don't understand how people are motivated to actually click dislike. If I think something is remarkable or helpful, I might be inclined to interact with it. If I think the video is less than garbage, I'm inclined to gtfo and not waste time clicking buttons.
That's the issue. This mentality creates the illusion of dislikes being rare, bad and unhelpful.
Negativity doesn't get to manifest in numbers, but positivity does, and when someone has the audacity to actually speak up negatively in the comments, they get mauled, further encouraging people to just gtfo if they don't have anything nice to say.
It creates an environment where compliments are the only acceptable interaction.
I don't think it's necessarily so one-sided.
Certainly, if you're posting something that's incomprehensible or misrepresented, expect unhelpful negativity. When you give people no place to begin to be helpful in their critique, people won't try.
If I know of a way that a demonstrated problem in the video could be solved, I might offer it in a comment. Is that negative? Certainly you could say it implies that something was done "wrong". I prefer to think I'd be offering ways to make future videos/projects/whatever "better". At any rate, as I try to communicate a non-trivial message, I understand that I must use words to do so. I don't typically get attacked for it unless I sincerely try to be an asshole.
There are always a significant chunk of people who respond as if everything is either a superlative or a personal affront. Neither case is helpful. I don't think it' manifests as lopsided as it's treated. I also think that this trend of terse, meaninglessly favorable or antagonistic comments is characteristic of a population who are trained to think that clicking a like/dislike button is a sufficiently meaningful expression of concern.
I don't think that I should be obligated to explain in detail why I dislike things which I don't care to endure. Avoidance is an entirely acceptable response. Considering that not all judgements are objective, mere courtesy should make this an obviously appropriate choice in the vast sea of interest-driven content.
I feel like there is a dislike troll.
@@VinnyT-rr6lh How so? Are you referring to this video/channel in particular or on YT in general?
If you're talking about downvote bots, that's certainly a thing that's been done before.
This video will be valid untill the internet will die.
Maybe you'd think that if you didn't know anything about the internet.
@@NIgHTMaReFortyTwo So you have hope that the trolls will go away? That the internet will eventually become a civil place where people don't constantly attack each other?
Or, you believe the dwindling constructiveness of the internet will slowly fade away until only the trolls are left? Where any hint of criticism or even a positive comment will be assaulted by opponents to your point of view?
I would much rather prefer the first option, but I feel that it might simply be impossible...as unfortunate and pessimistic as that sounds.
It's more complicated than that. History's pendular motion also happens on the internet.
A couple decades ago we made the shocking realization that not everyone online is nice. It was shocking because people behaved nicely right before it. Today, the nastiness has more or less peaked, and many people's internet endeavors are based around getting offended by everything.
Notice a pattern? I sure do. From here on out two things can happen: either the pendulum is a perfect one and keeps swaying forever OR it eventually stabilizes itself.
👍 Great perspective Peter. Very relevant for today, not just for UA-cam videos.
Agreed!
Another reason why you are hands down my favorite content creator. You do what you do and respect other opinions which I find fantastic. Thank you for your videos and inspiration to just get out there and do what I love.
I was going to post a comment swearing about your grandma, but then I thought you made a few good points. Love your videos, long time watcher.
What a very mature outlook. When I get dislikes I can sleep for a week
Thanks for this video. As a small content creator, I was trying to get my head around the negitive comments or dislikes. This video really honestly helped my headspace.
I'm glad there are UA-cam content creators that are willing to talk about how this topic affects everyone not just the creator but also the viewers too and I think you hit the nail on the head with your opinions on the matter. Keep up the amazing work.
I reckon the majority of your dislikes are from men who are jealous of your rugged good looks and your amazing skills. Of course I am one of them, I dislike every video because I see your beautiful hands crafting ingenious masterpieces and I think to myself; if can't do what he does and be happy then he doesn't deserve to either.
I love you Peter, stop being so amazing.
Vegee he is pretty handsome imo too lol
Y’all thirsty
I will agree that he's cute, handsome even, but rugged? He's much to cuddly to be rugged. Lol.
I watch his videos 40% for his beautiful blue eyes
You makin fun of my honey grams?
Doctor Zoidberg Grams?
@@momonomay3011 yeah, just a little bit of honey
I like honeycombs cereal. Do wish it and most other cereals had less sugar content.
I'm more of a Peanut Butter Crunch fan myself😁
Damn right Skippy, Cinnamon Toast Crunch is better
I really enjoy your videos and how random and creative they can be. I can truly say that when I see that you’ve posted a new video that it’s going to be fun and super cool. Pleas keep making more of these videos.
Hey, weird question, can you use the stabilizer resin on flowers? Maybe like a rose? See if it retains its color and shape, that'd be a neat experiment
This is beautiful advice, I think, just for the general day-to-day. Honestly refreshing & wonderful perspective, we need more content creators like you. You're like the dad of youtube in a very humbling and honest way. Anyway, this has drawled on for longer than I meant it to; just know you're very well appreciated and respected here on this site.
I remember watching this video when you first posted it and now that I'm creating my own videos, I watched it again and it really resonated with me. It was a good video then, and good enough for me to watch again!
I think that's a great perspective to have. The idea of using dislikes as a way of seeing whether or not people enjoy your video is something that will ultimately bring you and your viewers closer and make it so more people can enjoy your content.
In a compleatley unrelated note (pardon my randomness=P) I love your singing. Its brief in your videos but it's really great!
This is always an hot topic with UA-camrs/ content creators. One of the main reasons why I haven't started making videos myself. This makes me look at it differently and I'll consider it even more.. thanks Vato
Hey bud I love your videos. I may not always like what you have created but I have yet come across one of your videos that has not either inspired me in a project or taught me something new. Keep up the awesome work.
I rarely like or dislike videos. Usually, if I react to a video it is to send a specific message... particularly if the video is from a creator who gets fewer views and likes, or if I want to tell youtube "hey algorithm, I don't like this, please don't." but I doubt the latter actually matters, since they capitalize on views and watch time, and sometimes crazy people like to watch stuff they hate I guess? Most often though, I do it as a kind of bookmark, since youtube keeps a list of the videos you have liked, so if I think "Oh man, I need to be able to find this again so I can show so-and-so" or just want to watch something again, I will like it.
Anyway, I love all your videos. I love your projects, they're fun, and I also just like the stuff where you're talking about or discussing various things because you seem like a cool dude.
You rock man! in all honesty your content over all is awesome. I've tried things I otherwise would not have had i not been a follower. You teach in a fun casual manner and your not afraid to make mistakes and to tell us you screwed up. Your channel has taught me more about resin than most tutorials, and I find myself highly entertained while watching! Keep it up!
I don't do anything even close to woodworking or shop stuff, but I love your videos...the way your mind works is fun to watch.. I love how you take regular (or irregular) stuff and create cool stuff is fascinating. Just because I don't live every project. I still really enjoy watching you go through the process-you are very entertaining
Youre easily my favorite "maker" to watch on UA-cam. You add a little comedy and humanity to the videos. I'd much rather see you laugh about messing up a project or testing some off the wall method just to see what happens rather than some of the grumps out there. Keep doing what you're doing.
The first dislike is the easiest to get, people jump on it when it says zero.
This is a great video two years later it has helped me!
peter you're the man, I literally love all of your videos. You are a very wise man. Thanks a lot!
I prefer crunchy but cereal personally.
In all seriousness you have a great channel, and I love seeing your interactions with the audience here. It's a great, supportive, knowledge filled community.
I like the way you think of dislikes as something that is going to happen anyway. That one in a 1000 will not like it and all you seem to want is to know why they dislike the video.
Yes , Thank you .
If you flip your screen upside down, the dislikes looks like "likes".
But then the likes will look like dislikes!
This is sound advice, not just on the internet but for life as well. There are so many people out there who don't understand that how they say something can affect how it it interpreted. I love your videos and always look forward to them :).
These points are very intelligently presented and it was refreshing to come across a YT video with content of this caliber, thanks
I really love these videos and hearing your view on things.
I originally subscribed to your channel because the turning was very relaxing but I grew to enjoy your personality and that's what's made me stay over the years and I really enjoy the resin videos great stuff keep it up
One of the most useful videos I watched this month
I have never hit the dislike button on your videos. In fact, I almost hit the like button as soon as the video starts. You put out some of the best, creative, and most interesting content on UA-cam. Keep up the great work.
That is the best and most logical, sensible and intelligent viewpoint put forth by any content creator I've seen here on youtube. Thank you!
What a refreshing perspective
Ran across your bubble wrap coaster video and decided that was interesting enough to see what other projects you have. Then I saw this video and out of curiosity tapped it. This commentary just made me a fan regardless of your content. I thoroughly enjoy real people and you are so obviously real I’m subscribing prior to watching a second video. I have a feeling I’ll binge watch for awhile. 😉
I usually 'like' most of the videos I watch. I appreciate the effort you guys put in for what is after all, free entertainment.
I like your take on this a lot. I feel it's a very mature, honest and positive way to approach the issue.
First of all Peter. I love your videos and your funny and experimental projects. I dont remember when I found your channel but its been a while.
And I think that its really positive that you made this kind of video, to send the message. Hopefully some people think twice before they do there trolling.
Once again, Thanks for the awesome videos you do I hope you will continue for a long time :)
Best regards from a Swedish fan ! :)
Hey Mr. you can do something from a wespnest in resin ? A Lamp Feet ?
You also have the viewers who are here less for the project, and more for the learning experience. Regardless of whether or not the project turns out how you planned, I always manage to learn something new, which then leads me to think of ways to adapt this new information for things that I could do myself.
I just watched the epoxy knife and was wondering if you could try again with like a super hard resin or like a dip it knife
Peter you area such a creative and amazing dude. Every single time I see one of your videos I am so excited to see what new and exciting thing you are making. You are always so happy and excited in creating and that is what makes it for me.
We had a family vacation a few years ago (13 of us) and someone made up the rule everyone had to agree with where we were going out to dinner. Yeh, that didn't work so well. I really enjoy your videos, and your outlook on life is very refreshing. Keep up the great work. ATB : )
I bet you're a great dad. Growing up I wish someone had this conversation with me. Thank you for the chat!!!
Big fan of your channel my friend! I've just discovered it :) You make some amazing (and hilarious) stuff on your channel haha I completely agree with you too. I'm just new on the whole UA-cam thing but even I have had a couple of dislikes. Keep up the awesome work! :)
You are so right. This is life, bur as you always say: please say why you dislike . Wish you and your loved ones a great week
I like all your projects! I’ve liked everything because you’ve made me laugh or made a really nice project.
This is great! Firstly I had no idea you had a second channel...secondly you made 2 points that I say all the time...1. You can't please everyone 100% of the time...there is always that handful of people that have their own opinions and thoughts on your creations 2. You cannot put emotions to typing (whether it's text, comments, email...etc) you have no idea what emotion they are in when they are typing the message.
No idea what anyone could have against your videos. I find them relaxing and entertaining to watch. Your ideas are great and I really like that you are not afraid to show your failures and reflect what went wrong with a project. Personally I can't do any wood work and all the other cool things you do. I don't even know how I found your channel but I do know that I like watching your content. So keep up the good work buddy!
You're such an understanding person!! Keep being amazing
I like your videos because you are honest. You take us through the process even if its not always always perfect or you make a mistake. And most of the times the end product is really good.
And even if it werent i would still enjoy it.
Ps: There is just a few of your projects that I don't like but i love the creativity and the learning process that you bring to the table and that is why I subscribe to your channel.
Spinach encased resin cups for spinach dip.
I like Honey Graham cereal ! Lol
Mars World: Cinamon Toast Crunch all the way
I love them
People like you disgust me /s
Lol that’s so funny 😂. I love Peter’s videos.
Fruity pebbles
Dang it where were you when I was struggling through philosophy in college twenty-some odd years ago. Well said!
Honestly think this video needed to be made. Glad you don’t let it get to you too much and you try to understand all sides
As a channel trying to grow and climb this goat trail up Mt. UA-cam, this was very helpful and quite entertaining! Thanks Peter
I've watched every single one of your videos and I've always really enjoyed them. Great content. Keep up the wonderful creativity and amazing videos.
yaayy thank you for uploading so soon
I miss the dip-it series. Any chance there are any more in the works?
I personally like every single one of your videos, seeing them is so mesmerizing to me and makes want to do projects like yours with wood and resins but i will have to wait a bit in to the future for when i have the resources to take it as a hobby and also when resin becomes a bit more cheap in my country because right now companies here sell resin for the double if not triple the price that you can find it in the U.S.
Anyways keep up the good work!
Sorry to hear that you can't find resin in your country at a reasonable price. Is purchasing it through Ebay an option?
MICHELLE ROSS it is, but I would have to investigate if our customs would let them pass without problems.
So to get your attention, lol, do you do modeling as a side job because you make crafting look gorgeous.
This reminds me of two things. One is about the restaurant analogy: I was at a restaurant last week and a few tables down from us there were three people. The place was relatively empty/quiet so we could hear their conversation with their waiter. It seems like they messed up one person's food, the second one liked their meal, and the last person just didn't like it. She was saying, "I really didn't like it. It was just bad," and other things similar to that - not expressly saying what was bad, but saying she didn't like it. She wasn't mean about it; for some reason, she just didn't like it. For the record, my group liked our food. This woman was the real life equivalent of someone not trolling, but expressing their distaste in the food/video/content/whatever else. My group felt bad for the waiter and he took it well, but that was it.
The second thing is about accepting dislikes - Linus Tech Tips and his other channels always include an outro inviting for both likes and dislikes if people felt that way. I really respect that attitude from him/his team. Plus, I think more likes and dislikes makes a video more popular or something like that.
Peter, you're such a dad, and I mean that with the utmost respect and admiration!
Beautiful explanations...so few simplify as you have in this video...humans try to overcomplicate things...
This is one of the most needed things to learn in life.
Wonderful perspective!!!! Not only do you do very nice work - shows you’re an all round nice guy, giving credit to positive & constructive comments!
We have your next project video: Make a Resin covered Troll! Thanks for the helpful perspective and insight!
Holy crap! I love your videos, and I’m constantly checking to see when you have another one. How did I not know you had another channel?
Dislike! Not enough resin! (I kid, I love everything you do!)
Andy Warburton 😂
It’s not just UA-cam and it’s not just making things, that’s life! Great outlook!
6:32 That's something every UA-camr should understand.
I unsubbed from many a channel because of the owners not being able to handle a bit of constructive critcism or even just well-meaning advice. And sometimes I bite back - repeatedly.
So... Seems you're speaking a fundamental truth there.
Reminds me of one UA-camr; I think his name was Bart Baker. His jokes turned mean at one point and then his video quality declined, leading to a flood of people complaining. Most people were just giving him advice, but he took it incredibly badly.
In response to those people he launched a new segment, which was him making fun of the comments (including singling out individual people by name and then insulting them) and being a huge P.o.S about it. I don't hear about him anymore, so I'm assuming that it didn't go over so well.
Hope he learned his lesson, but ppl like that seldom do :-/
"And sometimes I bite back - repeatedly." Oh man, been there. It's awful and heartbreaking when you learn the guy you liked from turns out to be a self centered jerk
So true
"In response to those people he launched a new segment, which was him making fun of the comments (including singling out individual people by name and then insulting them) "
I HATE that kind of shit, the whole "reading mean comments, pls defend me :(" series.
I've never seen this but thank you for the video. I hope a lot of people get the message
Loved the restaurant analogy.
You bring up some great points!
I love watching your show. I learn a lot from what you do.
I'm very near to starting up a channel myself and it's a good thing to get some perspective from somebody with experience. Thanks.
Oh, and why haven't you done a two pineapple turning video yet? One pineapple was so boring :)
Love your videos, Peter. Not even a wood worker but I love your content. I got into resin paintings. Keep up the good work.
Man I love this channel
Great perspectives. I could not agree with you more.
Can you mold and cast a record?
You just keep doin you man, You make some amazing stuff. Just be happy.
This is probably the most insightful thing I've seen on UA-cam and it came from a creator... Creator? A Maker creator? No but really good point.
Mr. Brown, Keep doing what you have been doing. I have just found your channel and I find that you have a very creative mind(your wife also-with the table). I enjoy seeing the creative mind think an idea and then put into existence. God bless you.
I like your videos. Even the projects I don't like as much as the other ones I know I just don't like for personal aesthetic reasons. Even then, I enjoy the videos because they're entertaining - I like seeing what you come up with next. I like the projects that don't turn out the way you planned the most though - the lava resin project fascinated me.
Yes. ❤️
I get that comparison with the five friends but I think UA-cam-videos are a different thing. I mean you don't have to click on a video judging the title and deciding it might not be for you. And if you click on it at least admit the work the creators put into it. As long as people don't trick people into watching aka clickbaiting there is no real reason to dislike a youtube video
"there is no real reason to dislike a youtube video" How about the user dislikes the video? This mentality is what ruined the old 5 star system.
What's next, removing the dislike button and replacing it with a second like one because the notion of someone not liking something might hurt people's "feewings"?
Just found your channel and absolutely love your humour and personality and agree totally with this videos content.
I remember when I started watching UA-cam videos, I thought that the like/dislike buttons were just a handy way to let the creator know, if I enjoyed that particular video (relative to their usual content). Which is something (I assumed) a content creator would be interested in.
Didn’t take me long to realize, what a sensitive topic this it, though 😎
A lot of people seem to equate disliking a particular video with disliking the creator...or just being mean...and then they get all protective and fangirly. On some women’s channels especially, you can’t state any form of criticism (no matter how valid and carefully stated) without being ripped apart by the ‚mob‘. Glad you’re taking a more philosophical stand on the matter.
I always like to get constructive criticism because I know I do not do everything perfect and I like to learn from others. And of course we always have those that just like to criticize everything. Keep going like you are. Love your videos.
You know what is fun about dislike?
They will help your video anyway.
The algorithm counts contribution and interaction, not if they are likes or dislike.
Just for your information.
There's hard evidence suggesting that youtube is changing that in an attempt to shut down channels that blow up with interaction by posting outrageous inflammatory crap for a quick buck (like every instance of Oprah or what PETA usually does to get attention.)
you have a very positive outlook on things💪😁, i think a lot of it is because we cant hear someones voice(their tone) to know how they meant their comments
