Please share your thoughts and questions in the comments section below!
If nothing else, I'm glad they followed the recent trend of adding a hint system to take care of the iffy game logic. That's always a game killer for me with this kind of game. Great review!
Thank you very much Bolt! I always appreciate your kind words and support man! Yeah, for older point-and-click games, I pretty much either could never figure it out or resorted to a walkthrough. Day of the Tentacle comes to mind for some oddball logic. That's why I'm grateful that games like Broken Sword 5 and also Thimbleweed Park have a hint system. I believe providing hints incrementally is the best way to handle light nudges as opposed to outright spoiling the solution.
Thank you so much for your kind words and support!! Broken Sword is a fun series. I got into it with the Director’s Cut of the first one, but wow that was a fun point-and-click! Not sure what you mean by seeing me back though. I never left haha! I still review games every week! 😉
Point-and-clicks are some of my favourite kinds of games. I haven't ever played anything Broken Sword-related so maybe this might be a fun place to start! I absolutely love the Monkey Island series as well as some of the King's Quest games, especially V and VI.
I love point-and-click adventure games! They’re very under appreciated nowadays, especially with modern open-world adventures all over the place. Broken Sword 5 is indeed an excellent place to start the series! I would also recommend Broken Sword: Director’s Cut, which is a remastering if the very first Broken Sword. I enjoy Monkey Island, as most of the LucasArts games like Day of the Tentacle and Maniac Mansion. But I haven’t yet played King’s Quest - at least the newer ones. I somewhat remember playing the really old graphic adventure version, which is insanely tough to figure out. I have the first chapter of the newest one, but I haven’t played it yet. I assume it’s very different haha!
Yes, the first chapter of the newest King's Quest is very different. If I had to choose one and only one for you to play, it'd be KQVI. The humour and story are both really well done. I'd love to see you review a classic point-and-click sometime :D
I would love to review a classic point-and-click adventure game sometime! The closest I got was Thimbleweed Park, which is hardly classic at all, but the gameplay and graphics are in the retro style. The really old pre-Shadowgate ones, though, like Space Quest and King’s Quest, are the ones I really need to experience. Thank you so much for the recommendations on King’s Quest VI!
I think it's awesome that this series is still going. If I didn't suck at point and clicks so much then I'd love to jump into this series. Although maybe the hint system would help with that a little but. Like you said, it's a fine line between helping yourself along and abusing it. I might put this in "maybe" list for Let's Plays, I think could be a change of pace for the channel (not sure if that's good or bad). Do you think it would make for an entertaining series?
Point-and-clicks are an interesting breed, indeed! On one hand, I think adventure games in general are fun to both watch and play. Point-and-click adventures, in particular, will depend though, simply because they're slower-paced. Also, if you get stuck, it might be boring. You could use hints, but if you're using them constantly, it may not look so good either. I'd say if you really want to play Broken Sword 5, then of course it's a fun adventure game to try out, but as something to show, it could be challenging. Then again, if you cut out everything except the successes, then it's a riveting adventure story!
Mr. Panda yeah it’s definitely a challenge on balancing showing the real play through but also keeping the game flowing. I generally like to show a few failures and then edit out a lot of the wasted time just not to bore the person watching 😅
With Broken Sword 5 (and point-and-click adventures in general), there are generally a few things I think are entertaining if watching and not playing. The story itself, whether it's comedy, drama, or action, is the star. Some can be entertaining simply because they feel like a TV series or movie. Then, how you handle and approach puzzles and game logic is another part. Seeing someone figure out puzzles and have those Eureka moments is why I love having others like my wife play an adventure game for the first time. Of course, when solutions don't work out, they can lead to funny results as well! It's definitely a hard balance with point-and-clicks, I agree, so I'd love to know if you do play it, whether as a let's play or just for fun!
If think it's going into the maybe pile of games to play on the channel. I might just record it as a series and then when I'm editing, if I think I haven't added anything, then I'll just play it for me.
I wish you the best of luck with it! And if you do play Broken Sword 5, even if it's for you, I'd love to know what you think! It's a fun series to get into, well at least the oldest ones and this most recent one. I think a funnier, sillier, and better point-and-click adventure game to try out would be Thimbleweed Park, which I also got to review. It's kind of like Twin Peaks/X-Files more than The Da Vinci Code. The mystery is also creepier in a faux horror way. The puzzles are harder, mostly because the logic is sometimes all over the place, but it also uses an incremental hint system like Broken Sword 5. Even though I enjoyed both games, Thimbleweed Park is a true modern throwback to this genre. If you've heard of Maniac Mansion or Day of the Tentacle, which are old LucasArts graphic adventure games, then Thimbleweed Park is made by the same creators. So it's a possible direction to go if you want to delve into point-and-clicks! :)
I definitely recommend Broken Sword 5 as a good gateway into point-and-click games. There's a nice balance of adventure, humor, and puzzles. And if it ever gets too confusing, the optional hint system is a big plus.
Yeah, as a fan of old-school hand-drawn animation, I definitely see your point. That said, I do like the animation style of Broken Sword 5, but I think a hand-drawn game would look amazing. Makes me think of the gorgeous UbiArt games from Ubisoft like Rayman Legends and Valiant Hearts. Thanks for sharing your thoughts!
Great review! Broken Sword 5 piques my interest since I'm a fan of point-and-click adventure games like Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney. What I especially like are solving puzzles and figuring out mysteries, and it looks like Broken Sword has that in spades. The slow pace is OK with me. It's actually the fast-paced twitch-based games that stress me out hehe. I also appreciate the voice acting clips you included and like the idea that everything is voiced. Wish more point-and-clicks had full voice acting! I think you need strong actors to support a story-based game like this. I'd like to try this series out sometime! Looks like a game I might enjoy! Maybe I'll even play the whole Broken Sword series hehe!
Thank you so much for your support and encouragement as always!! :D This is definitely a game you'd appreciate in the same way you enjoy a good Phoenix Wright or Professor Layton game! It's more in the vein of games like Maniac Mansion, Thimbleweed Park, or even the Miles Edgeworth: Ace Attorney Investigations game, but it definitely has that old-school point-and-click feel. Definitely mysteries and puzzles too! I agree with you that voice acting can improve point-and-click adventures so much. I think it would do wonders for visual novels like Ace Attorney too. I mean, look at Danganronpa and its great cast haha! I like the voices in Broken Sword 5, and I think George's actor really pulls off the Han Solo adventurer voice. Yes! Play through them! I've always wanted to go back to the first Broken Sword and play all the way to the Serpent's Curse chronologically! It should be a new project after all the Final Fantasy playthroughs! ;)
This looks fun enough, but the real star here is the one-liners. I laughed out loud at "I wondered how one man could have so many pugs." Someone should turn this into a collection of memes.
Hahaha! I agree! That's what I love about adventure games - the funny dialogue and one-liners! Broken Sword 5 is full of them because George Stobbart is basically Han Solo. When I was trying to find a line in the video, I stumbled across the pug line and thought it had a humorous enough delivery despite being such an odd line, so I'm glad you enjoyed it! I'm sure we all know someone in our lives like that hahaha! Thanks for your wonderful comments!!

I would love a collection of all the broken swords on console
Good to see you back buddy! Nice review of a game series I very much enjoyed since the 90s. All the best

I never really been into point and click but this one looks pretty fun

I really wish they stuck to the hand drawn 2d animation of the first two games, lost a lot of it's charm when it went cell shaded *shudders*
