thanks sooo fuckin much man, I haven't taken your advise to the full extent as I use (prussian, alizaarin, and phalo green) occasionally, but for the most part, mixing earth tones, greys, chromatic blacks and you name it has really developed me so I just wanted to revisit this video to tell you how grateful I am!! I didn;t even notice your tone being loud btw man, keep it up!

This was a quick, informative, and easy refresher for a newbie or those of us getting back into painting after a 20-year hiatus. Thank you. I'm heading to watch and absorb all your passion. :) :) :)

Am a beginner. I was so confuse about all the colors but I feel better now about I can make so many colors with those three primary colors red, blue and yellow. Been painting for only one month, just trying to keep it simple, you r correct 50 r even 100 painting with primary colors makes so many colors.

I love this video. You say "Make 50 to 100 paintings before adding more colors!". This should be taught at primary school. In fact, I believe that only primary colors should be allowed at school for the first few years so everybody would be able to REALLY understand the power of these three colors. But like in every subject they bombard us with too many detailed facts, so we lose track of the basic knowledge. Having good and stable basics is the key to be able to build a substantial knowledge in maths, physics, chemistry, geography, history, languages, art etc. Because the school system is like it is many people finish school after so many years of learning and can`t point out a certain country on the map. They can`t even determine historical eras. And this video is a wonderful example of how things should be taught!!! Thank you very much!

I learned something of great value to me from this presentation. It`s up to me to get it to his level, maybe come to your conclusion and then maybe take it to the next level. I am thankful for every inspiration I get for free. I`m not trying to become a Master of Mixing Colors. We all have different needs. You obviously are on an advanced level when color-mixing is concerned which I am not. I have mainly been working with pencils, black inks and grey tones.

I agree with keeping a simple palette specially if you are a student on a budget. For oil paints however it's a bit more difficult because the colors are made from minerals that often have other colors unlike acrylic which is synthetic more often a pure color. This is why if you dont have good or pure primaries in oil paints you might get muddy colors.

I have been struggling with this whole concept for months! You have made me realize Its not complicated! Not at all !! Not even kinda ! It’s so simple, IF you keep it simple ! Been painting 30 years. I do not suggest limiting yourself in terms of pigments but finding out what each pigment is good for. Each fills a need. You may not need a certain pigment for the effect you desire, but keep an open mind about which colors you choose and research them for their effects. And 50 paintings? I should be so rich.

Alexandra A and Decron, I think he said to do so many of them to make sure you get used to actually mixing the various colors, and, to have you mix *other" shades such as aqua and brown. Plus, I feel like he was just exaggerating on the number of paintings - to try and bring a bit of humor in this video so it would help you to relax when you paint. 😊

@@curtriceennis2924 Actually I was wondering how you darken your colors, particularly to get an umber. Do you use black as well as white to darken your colors? This may be the best video I've ever seen explaining how to mix colors and values with a basic palette. I think I'll give it a try!
Color has always been a problem for me, and an area of my work that I'm sort of afraid to work on, because I'm color blind. I have difficulty telling how warm or cool colors, highlights, and shadows are. Greens and purples especially are the bane of my existence.

Watching your explanation on color theory and mixing neutrals just gave me a 💡moment. I've been painting for about 5 years, mostly mixed media, and I recently decided to get truly acquainted with my watercolors, sticking with various shades of the color wheel, some earth pigments, and a couple of convenience colors. I've been doing nothing but color mixing, no painting, both watercolors and acrylics. I'm going back to basics. One of my biggest struggle areas is working with light and shadows, which requires lots of various neutrals whether using acrylic or watercolor. I somehow get lost and struggle with which primary to add when I've been mixing a particular neutral. But after watching this I "got it" !!!! ( and I've watched many great tutorials here on UA-cam) I've had milestone "aha" moment. I'm anxious to pull my paints out!!! Thanks for sharing this!!!! 👍🏼🙏🏼

Thank you so very much for simplifying something that I have been struggling with as a senior beginner. I appreciate your comments also about allowing and learning from your mistakes. Basic lessons we teach our children but totally forget ourselves. Saying things in terms that anyone could understand and learn from eg. Start small, don't get bogged to with too many choices of paints and brushes when we haven't learnt how to use the basics. Thank you so much.

So I am learning how to paint and about colors by watching YT videos. Yours are up there in my favorites. And I have subscribed.
I like your style. And I like your artwork. The Landscapes are so natural looking. It's the kind of art I would like to achieve one day. I love nature.
I'm currently making color charts and I am surprised at how many colors you can get from mixing only a couple or so colors. And adding white in small increments you get varying shades.

I am a grandmother who entertains an elementary grandchild. Her art teacher (third grade) doesn't go this far. I bought some washable paints made by crayola and we ran out of yellow and brown. We are painting a turkey and needed brown. You helped me SO MUCH! I bought a new set of ten colors and didn't check the contents. No brown. So, we are now going to make our own brown. Just know how much you just encouraged me! This indeed may make a turning point in enjoying painting for her.

I think having a good grasp, leading towards an expert understanding of colour theory is excellent and the way to start. I think everyone needs to do the scholastic as well as the artistic. The best reason for buying premade colours is not to ignore 5 years of punishment but to make it easier and to give the painter a consistent reliable result.

Informative and straightforward, though it is worth mentioning that the choice of primary hues is important too. As there are no pure primaries in pigment, I use two each of the primaries, each with a bias towards the other two primaries ...so looking on the colour wheel, Ultramarine, for example, has a red bias and Cerulean has a yellow bias...Cadmium Red = yellow bias, Alizarin Crimson = blue bias and Cadmium yellow = red bias and Lemon yellow = blue bias. And so depending on whether a brighter or a muted neutral is required, the more appropriate primaries can be selected from the outset. i.e. Alizarin crimson and Lemon yellow produces a muted orange, on account of the two pigments having a bias towards blue, which, being the complimentary of orange, would naturally help produce a muted orange. And so with that muted orange mixed, more blue could be added to further neutralise it. By using six primaries and white, a greater range of potential hues can be mixed. But on the subject of this tutorial coming across as being preachy and making uncomfortable viewing...a joke right? Honestly, some people need to get out more. Here's an idea...how about parking all childish insecurities at the door and concentrating on the subject in hand? As my dear old mum used to say, "If you've got nothing nice to say, don't say anything at all." A decent watch.

I've been an artist and graphic designer involved with commercial printing for well over 30 years and I can most certainly tell anyone that those are the correct primary colors. The red, blue and yellow you show here will work for some things but if I were to suggest only three colors to buy it would be Cyan, Magenta and Lemon yellow (plus white) If you can make Black and not brown with your primaries then you are on the right track.

In commercial printing, absolutely, but for painting, no. With there being no pure primaries in pigment, your choice will only work for some things too. Ideally you need six primaries to cover the bias of any primary pigment i.e. Lemon yellow = blue bias.

Thank you. I’m new at this and have bought every color out there. I find it very frustrating as a new painter with all the colors. This makes so much more sense. I’ve been trying to mix all these other colors together to make colors and getting mud.

I see that very clearly now :) I will start again :) I cant draw and hardly paint, but still learning the mystery of painting :) You have many times give me insperation. The best place i can be is in a gallery of paintings, as i was in Berlin on holiday in mai :) Keep up the good job, you are marvelous !

I did not understand why I could not get mixing colors. I thought I was dumb, and couldn't understand why I couldn't get this, and also shadows. I am a beginner, painting for a year now and I still have difficulty. On top of that I get scared that I'm going to mess up my canvas. Lord I just want to get this, and paint beautiful pictures. And how come I can't think of my own ideas? I must say though I have learned more from UA-cam than I ever did in college. You guys on UA-cam are so good at what you do. Thanks for sharing.

The reason why you would use magenta, cyan and yellow is because those colors are neutral. So for example cadmium red has a yellow undertone (it is kind of orange-ish) and that‘s why you don‘t get a vibrant purple. The same for ultramarine blue. It has a slight red tone in it and if you mix ultramarine with yellow you will receive a rather muddy green. I bought magenta, cyan and yellow and I‘m super happy with it and my paintings turn out very saturated and vibrant in terms of colors. Hope this is kind of understandable.

I don't think he's really trying to 'limit' artists as much as everyone thinks. With the colors you can make, I think he's trying to teach us to explore, how many different colors you can make from just primaries and white. Of course, not everyone will feel the same way. I think it's a smart way of thinking, artists are supposed to explore and see what they can do with what is given.

A very insightful video. I got back into scale modelling about a year ago and I love playing with colors. I am a hairy stick painter and at times I used to get confused on how to achieve camouflage colors coz there are thousands of shades of camos. The concept of neutrals and earth tones helped me alot. Made things easier for me. Thanks

    Brandon,
Thank you so very much for this video and all of your tutorials.
I disagree, learning to mix colors is VERY helpful to a beginner. Thanks for taking some of the confusion out of mixing and especially stressing the need for practice and not needing to buy every color. Learning to trust my own color eye and allowing myself to create color will be beneficial as I create and paint. I'm only about 1 month in so I am very much a beginner.:) ~Shannon
