    Great work as always, Craig! Love your videos. It's like comfort food but for UA-cam videos. I probably like it because it's never overly produced and it's a real person behind the scenes sharing their experience, how UA-cam should be.

    Thanks Craig, good stuff. I find that shutting my iMac down when I’m not using it keeps it fresh each time I start it up. It also saves energy, which is money. My wife used to leave it on ALL THE TIME. Ran slower and slower over time. Recently did some upgrades and now runs like new. It’s a 2011 27” iMac, upgraded the HDD to SSD, added 16gb of ram (had upgraded from 4gb to 16 previously) now 32gb and upgraded to Sonoma using Open Core Legacy Patcher. Considering the cost of a new one, the $200 spent was worth it.

    • @craigneidel
      @craigneidel  Місяць тому

      Nice, yes why spend more money than you need to and only $200 is a bargain. Thanks for watching and good luck with everything.

    Great tips, especially in regard to "appearing" faster. If your Mac is on Apple Silicon, it's NOT slow!
    Apple has always recommended keeping at least 10% of your disc space empty.
    Your calculations are closer to those for a swap file, which may be more appropriate.
    BTW, the "recycle bin" is a Windows thing. Mac users have always had Trash.
    But, as you say, not everything you delete goes there.
    You really may be running more programs than you realize.
    Some programs do collect sizeable caches, and a shutdown or at least a restart can will usually flush those.

    • @craigneidel
      @craigneidel  7 місяців тому +1

      Thanks. Yes the space you should keep is a bit variable but in the end it can cause a slowdown for sure. Thanks for the info and also for watching another video.

      " If your Mac is on Apple Silicon, it's NOT slow!"
      If your Mac with Apple Silicon is running Blender or Maya for 3D Modeling, then it is much slower than a Windows PC. And the Windows machine is also *much* *cheaper* .

      In the Windows world, ram is dirt cheap (as it should be). For example, 32gb of ram for 60 USD.
      In 2024, nobody buys a Windows PC with 8GB/256GB. 32 gigs of ram is the standard now (as it should be).

    Criag, great work by the way! I was hoping you could cut through the maze of choices and give me your simple combination of hardware for an external SSD for my 2017 iMac 27". It's the 3.5 GHz Quad-Core Intel Core I5, with 24 GB 2400 MHz DDR4 Memory. I've watched a ton of your videos so know there are many SSD routes, but what would you recommend today for my machine? I'm not a gamer or super user. I do a fair amount of video production and need faster iMovie for sure.

    • @craigneidel
      @craigneidel  Місяць тому +1

      I really only do product showcases on these not full reviews as I have a bunch of these coming in and do the initial testing. With that said I think they are all very close. Note that you may not get the same speeds at what you see in the videos as the 2017 has older Thunderbolt connections and I would need to test this on my 2017 iMac if I get some time to see which one works the best. Acasis works great too and so does the Qwiizlab on my M1 or M2 Macs but I will need to test on my 2017 soon. Maybe reach out the the companies and ask what to expect in the meantime and see who actually emails you back. Then go with that company for the support side.

    How can I tell which processes to close? What does my computer need to be running? I don't want to close the wrong thing. I seem to have so many but I'm not sure if that's normal.

    • @craigneidel
      @craigneidel  4 місяці тому

      You can look up the processes on Google to see what they do and what can be closed etc. Just make sure things don't startup in the background you are not using.

    How to speedup a slow Mac? The same way you speedup a Windows machine.
    More RAM. Oops, that is impossible.
    How about larger or faster SSD? Oops. not possible.
    Only one option left: go buy a new computer.

    • @craigneidel
      @craigneidel  7 місяців тому

      Why watch a mac channel if you don't like Macs. Funny to me. No, there are other items you can do. The new M chip Macs really don't need much help since they are so fast that most don't need more power.

    • @DerekDavis213
      @DerekDavis213 7 місяців тому
