- Could anyone ever stand in for Placido Domingo? The Understudy profiles Simon O'Neill during the 2004 Die Walküre seasons he comes to terms with the exacting demands of the Met. For a tenor of O'Neill's aspirations opera is deadly serious: he must strive for perfection on a daily basis. As O'Neill is asked to sing for his, Domingo, conductor Valery Gergiev assesses the young tenors's chances of survival in the ruthless industry that is opera.

I was a teacher in Ashburton where Simon was a student. I had no idea of his talent and career until recently, i knew he was destined for something great. What a wonderful documentary. I have shared this with many teachers and fellow students tonight.
Absolutely fantastic .. When I have arrived to Auckland ,NZ in 1998 , I have had a chance to hear him singing /rehearsing just walking along Queen Street.. I I didn't believe my years , how come ...in the end of the world ... a young man with a small backpack is singing on the level of La Scala .. It was my first day after a long trip from Europe .. I thought .. no ..may be this young man just had a tape recorder in his bag ..pretending he is singing .. but it was so BEAUTIFUL .. I just was following him as far as I could .. I was shy/confused to talk to him, that is one of my 3 similar regrets in life .. I should express my admiration .Later on I knew that it Simon O'Neil.. he used to rehearse anywhere .. Lucky me . I wish him the best , great talent .
What a great man simon is!
This is the greatest documentary in history of opera ( and sheep shearing) !
His voice is more suited to Wagner I think I like his humility and his work at the piano is excellent Domingo in my opinion isn’t a Wagner sound and I wouldn’t pay to hear him in a Baritone role
Mr Blasiak, your wisdon has been noted in the Loggione. I strongly concur.
